Risk Factors For Cardiovascular Disease In School Children--A Pilot Study., A. K. Khuwaja, Zafar Fatmi, W. B. Soomro, N. K. Khuwaja

Community Health Sciences

OBJECTIVE:

To assess the frequencies of risk factors for cardiovascular disease in school children. The information may help in designing interventions aimed at modifying unhealthy lifestyle in children, which may reduce the later incidence of cardiovascular disease in adults.

METHODS:

A cross-sectional study was conducted on 206 students (ages 14-18 years), enrolled in higher secondary school. Students were interviewed about their lifestyles, family history of cardiovascular disease and its risk factors. Moreover, they were assessed for height, weight and blood pressure.

RESULTS:

Twenty nine percent of the children were physically inactive, 31% were taking unhealthy diet daily, 21% were overweight …

Acceptance Of Golden Rice In The Philippine Rice Bowl, Mark Chong

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Few science issues in recent years have elicited such polarized public reactions as modern biotechnology and its agricultural applications. Although a new study conducted by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (Ithaca, NY, USA) indicates that Southeast Asian stakeholders generally hold positive views about agricultural biotechnology.

Beneficial Effects Of Flexible Insulin Therapy In Children And Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, Ramin Alemzadeh, P. Palma-Sisto, Elaine Parton, Joan P. Totka, Mary De Sales Kirby

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of a flexible multiple daily insulin (FMDI) regimen in routine pediatric diabetes care by comparing HbA1c, body mass index (BMI), and episodes of severe hypoglycemia (SH) before and after initiation of FMDI therapy. Data from 44 patients (2-16 years old), on a conventional insulin (CI) regimen, were collected during quarterly diabetes clinic visits. These patients were transitioned from CI to FMDI regimen: pre-meal lispro (bolus) and once or twice daily Humulin Ultralente with or without bedtime Humulin NPH as the basal insulin. There was a significant improvement in …

Diet And Exercise In Low Income, Culturally Diverse Middle School Students, Marilyn Frenn, Shelly Malin Sep 2003

Diet And Exercise In Low Income, Culturally Diverse Middle School Students, Marilyn Frenn, Shelly Malin

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

It is important to understand constructs essential to low-fat-diet and physical-activity behaviors of low-income culturally diverse middle-school-age students, because ethnicity and socioeconomic status influence body weight status, and these groups are most at risk for obesity later in life. In this descriptive study, constructs important in low-fat diet and physical activity in low- to middle-income, culturally diverse middle school students were examined. Revised for cultural/developmental appropriateness and reading level, instruments incorporating constructs from the Health Promotion and Transtheoretical Models were tested with 221 youth. Results demonstrated that percentage of fat in diet, total number of strategies used for a low-fat …

Ecocide And Genocide In Iraq: International Law, The Marsh Arabs And Environmental Damage In Non-International Conflicts, Aaron Schwabach

ExpressO

In 1991, after the first Gulf War, the Marsh Arabs of southern Iraq rose up against the Hussein government, with U.S. encouragement. The rebellion failed; in retaliation the government embarked on a massive water diversion project to drain the wetlands. In 1970 the wetlands covered nearly 11,000 square kilometers; today they cover fewer than a thousand. The Marsh Arabs whose ancestors had lived in the wetlands for five thousand years were forced to flee; many died. The drainage of the wetlands was a deliberate and calculated act of genocide and ecocide. At the time, Iraq was a party to several …

Isolasi Dan Identifikasi Flavonoid Pada Daun Katu (Sauropus Androgynus (L.) Merr), Sri Harsodjo Wijono

Makara Journal of Science

Isolation and Identification of Flavonoid in Katu Leaf (Sauropus androgynus (L.) Merr. Flavonoids in 95% ethanol extract of katu leaf were isolated using Charaux-Paris method. Extract of 95 % ethanol was fractionated with chloroform, ethyl acetate and three times with n-butanol. Flavonoids to be isolated from n-butanol I fraction by chromatography paper preparative method, and identified by spectrophotometer UV (Ultra-Violet) and infrared. Six flavonoids were isolated, one of flavonoids identified as rutin, and the other five were flavonol OH-3 conjugated or flavon groups.

Effects Of Protein-Energy Malnutrition On The Immune System, Mellova Amir Amir Aug 2003

Effects Of Protein-Energy Malnutrition On The Immune System, Mellova Amir Amir

Makara Journal of Science

Protein-Energy Malnutrition (PEM) is believed to lead to an increased susceptibility to infection, or cause impaired immunity. Infection, occurring with malnutrition, is a major cause of morbidity in all age groups and is responsible for two-thirds of all death under 5 yr of age in developing countries. Many cells of the immune system are known to depend for their function on metabolic pathways that employ various nutrients as critical factors. The most consistent changes in immune competence in PEM are in cell-mediated immunity, the bactericidal function of neutrophils, the complement system, the secretory immunoglobin A, and antibody response

Fear And Loathing: The Modulatory Effect Of Stress On Memory Formation And Its Wildlife Management Implications, Arla G. Hile Aug 2003

Fear And Loathing: The Modulatory Effect Of Stress On Memory Formation And Its Wildlife Management Implications, Arla G. Hile

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 5th (2003)

An ongoing challenge for wildlife managers is that target species habituate to or forget about hazing, even though the animals must be somewhat stressed by the hazing. Although stress and efficient memory formation/retrieval are considered to be incompatible, research suggests that the effect of stress on memory is complex. Mild and intense stress can impair memory formation and chronic stress can disrupt memory retrieval. Intermediate stress, however, actually enhances the formation of new memories, particularly long-term memories. Unfortunately, these conclusions are based data from only a very few domesticated species under highly controlled conditions. In nature the variation in baseline …

Temperature And Food Effects On Larval Pacific Herring (Clupea Pallasi) In Prince William Sound, Alaska, Sarah Jane Thornton Aug 2003

Temperature And Food Effects On Larval Pacific Herring (Clupea Pallasi) In Prince William Sound, Alaska, Sarah Jane Thornton

Marine Biology

The effects of food availability and water temperature on larval Pacific herring growth rates and survival were studied using a coupled biophysical model for 1993 through 1997. The herring growth model included feeding gains, metabolic costs, mortality losses and vertical migration of the herring larvae. In years when springtime oceanographic processes resulted in a high concentration of zooplankton, food availability did not limit larval herring growth rates; water temperature determined survival. However, in other years, food availability did limit survival, either due to insufficient food concentrations or to inaccessibility of the food. Vertical migration occasionally was restricted by strong water …
