Effect Of Low-Carbohydrate, Unlimited Calorie Diet On The Treatment Of Childhood Obesity: A Prospective Controlled Study, James R. Bailes Jr., Misty T. Strow, Joseph Werthammer, Richard A. Mcginnis, Yoram Elitsur Sep 2003

Effect Of Low-Carbohydrate, Unlimited Calorie Diet On The Treatment Of Childhood Obesity: A Prospective Controlled Study, James R. Bailes Jr., Misty T. Strow, Joseph Werthammer, Richard A. Mcginnis, Yoram Elitsur

Pediatrics

Background: Childhood obesity has been recognized as the new epidemic in developed countries. Caloric restriction with physical activity is the main therapeutic treatment available for these children. We compared two different dietary protocols to assess treatment efficacy.

Methods: Obese children from the Pediatric Endocrinology clinic were prospectively recruited for the study. Children and their parents were allowed to choose one of two dietary protocols: (1) carbohydrate restricted diet (<30 g/day), with unlimited calories, protein, and fat (High protein, Low CHO Diet), and (2) calorie restricted diet (Low Cal Diet). Anthropometric data were measured at baseline and at the 2 month follow up appointment.

Results: Thirty-seven children completed the study of whom 27 chose High Protein, Low CHO Diet and 10 chose Low Cal diet. No differences in gender ratio, age, or …

Effects Of Management Practices On Grassland Birds: Greater Prairie-Chicken, W. D. Svedarsky, J. E. Toepfer, R. L. Westemeier, R. J. Robel

United States Geological Survey: Effects of Management Practices on Grassland Birds

Information on the habitat requirements and effects of habitat management on grassland birds were summarized from information in more than 5,500 published and unpublished papers. A range map is provided to indicate the breeding distribution of Greater Prairie-Chicken in the United States and southern Canada. Although birds frequently are observed outside the breeding range indicated, the maps are intended to show areas where managers might concentrate their attention. It may be ineffectual to manage habitat at a site for a species that rarely occurs in an area. The species account begins with a brief capsule statement, which provides the fundamental …

Osteoporosis In Postmenopausal Saudi Women Using Dual X-Ray Bone Densitometry, Mahmoud I. El-Desouki

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: A pilot study to estimate the prevalence of osteopenia and osteoporosis in postmenopausal Saudi women. METHODS: Lumbar spine bone density was measured in 830 postmenopausal Saudi women 50-80 years of age (average 59 years), using dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at the King Khalid University Hospital, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia between 1989 and 1999. RESULTS: The results of the bone mineral density (BMD) in gm/cm2 were compared to the peak bone density (PBD) in healthy young women (T-score). Based on the definition of World Health Organization (WHO), the T-score value was considered for analysis. Accordingly, 248 (29.9%) subjects showed …

The Benefits Of Breastfeeding: An Introduction For Health Educators, Sheila G. J. Clark, Timothy J. Bungum Sep 2003

The Benefits Of Breastfeeding: An Introduction For Health Educators, Sheila G. J. Clark, Timothy J. Bungum

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

Currently 16% of Americans breastfeed their children for at least 12 months as recommended by the AAP, which is well below the HP 2010 goal of 25%. Breastfed infants receive benefits that can improve their health throughout their lives. The benefits of breastfeeding for children include increased resistance to infectious diseases, such as gastroenteritis, respiratory tract infections, and ear infections. Breastfed children also display lower rates of chronic diseases including diabetes, obesity, asthma, and leukemia. The choice to breastfeed results in economic benefits from lower health care costs and from reduced spending on infant formula. The Healthy People 2010 targets …

United Nations Sanctions After Iraq: Looking Back To See Ahead, Christopher C. Joyner Sep 2003

United Nations Sanctions After Iraq: Looking Back To See Ahead, Christopher C. Joyner

Chicago Journal of International Law

The UN's thirteen-year-old sanctions regime against Iraq marked a watershed development in the application of economic coercion by the United Nations. These measures-the most extensive and most prolonged ever applied by the United Nations-became the most economically devastating on their targeted citizenry, as well as the most politically controversial among human rights advocates. Given these circumstances, it is useful to assess both the impact of these sanctions on the economy and society of Iraq and the lawfulness of Security Council sanctions application in light of international humanitarian law. From this analysis we should be able to gauge what implications flow …

Libertarian Paternalism Is Not An Oxymoron, Cass R. Sunstein, Richard H. Thaler Sep 2003

Libertarian Paternalism Is Not An Oxymoron, Cass R. Sunstein, Richard H. Thaler

University of Chicago Law Review

The idea of libertarian paternalism might seem to be an oxymoron, but it is both possible and desirable for private and public institutions to influence behavior while also respecting freedom of choice. Often people's preferences are unclear and ill-formed, and their choices will inevitably be influenced by default rules, framing effects, and starting points. In these circumstances, a form of paternalism cannot be avoided. Equipped with an understanding of behavioral findings of bounded rationality and bounded self-control, libertarian paternalists should attempt to steer people's choices in welfare-promoting directions without eliminating freedom of choice. It is also possible to show how …

The Psychological Characteristics Of Obese Children, Thomas Taylor Mitchell Sep 2003

The Psychological Characteristics Of Obese Children, Thomas Taylor Mitchell

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Several studies along with the surgeon general of the United States have identified obesity as a national health issue. Research indicates that adult obesity treatment has relatively poor long-term effects. Consequently increased attention has been given to addressing obesity in children. This focus is particularly vital due to the fact that children are one of the populations showing the most rapid increase in overweight and obesity. The purpose of this study was to identify the some of the unique psychological characteristics of obese children by analyzing the intake data of children and adolescents attending the Loma Linda University Growing Fit …

Validation Of A Serotonin Checklist In A Parkinson’S Disease Population, Kelly Diane Darby-Holder Sep 2003

Validation Of A Serotonin Checklist In A Parkinson’S Disease Population, Kelly Diane Darby-Holder

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Although the distinctive pathological marker of Parkinson’s Disease is the progressive death of neurons that produce dopamine, there are also alterations in the production of quantities of other neurotransmitters, such as norepinephrine and serotonin that contribute to the disease. Parkinson’s Disease (PD) can be divided into two distinct classes based on the manifestation of motor symptoms, Type A and Type B Parkinson’s Disease. Type B PD patients often manifest symptoms in which serotonin deficiency plays an important role, which often includes a history of depression. Within the brain and spinal cord serotonin has wide spread projections, acting as an important …

Effects Of Cecropia Obtusifolia Leaf Ingestion On Lung Capacity, September 2003, Catherine Ross Sep 2003

Effects Of Cecropia Obtusifolia Leaf Ingestion On Lung Capacity, September 2003, Catherine Ross

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

People in developing countries have traditionally used forests as sources of local, cheap medicines. One plant used throughout the Neotropics is Cecropia spp., most notably for asthma. The purpose of this study was to determine if tea made from Cecropia obtusifolialeaves increases lung capacity and in what time frame this takes place. This was accomplished by treating a group of people with Cecropia tea for five days and another group with a placebo treatment and comparing the change in lung capacity of the two. The short term change in the placebo group had a statistically insignificant decrease of 2% while …

Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 3 - Early Life History Of Abalone (Haliotis Rubra, H. Laevigata): Settlement, Survival And Early Growth. Final Report For Frdc Project 1998/306, Dr Sabine Daume Sep 2003

Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 3 - Early Life History Of Abalone (Haliotis Rubra, H. Laevigata): Settlement, Survival And Early Growth. Final Report For Frdc Project 1998/306, Dr Sabine Daume

Fisheries Research Contract Reports

Australian abalone fisheries produce a high value, export-orientated products that provided 60% of the world supply in 1994 (Fleming, 2000). With wild abalone fisheries declining in countries worldwide, the interest in aquaculture products has increased substantially. The world production of abalone from aquaculture in 1999 was approximately 7,775 tonnes with only 89 tonnes (ca. 1%) being produced in Australia (Fleming, 2000). Abalone farming is expected to develop into a major industry and is a significant investment opportunity (McNamara, Victorian Aquaculture Strategy, May 1997). Future production from the numerous farms and sites either established, under construction or approved in Australia, could …

Effects Of Nibbling And Gorging On Lipid Profiles, Blood Glucose And Insulin Levels In Healthy Subjects, Mohammad R. Rashidi, Soltanali Mahboob, Reza Sattarivand

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: Although there is some evidence indicative of some beneficial effects of an increased meal frequency on the lipid profiles, the results published are controversial. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effects of feeding frequency on blood lipids, glucose and insulin. METHODS: The subjects of this study were 15 healthy non-smoker males aged 27.2 +/- 6.4 years. All subjects were placed on 2 identical diets in which they consumed the same food either as 3 meals at 7-hours intervals (gorging diet) or as 9 snacks at 2 hours intervals (nibbling diet). Each diet was of 2 …

Low Carbohydrate Diet. Its Effects On Selected Body Parameters Of Obese Patients, Faisal A. Alnasir, Bahaa E. Fateha

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: This pilot study, which involved 13 obese patients, was conducted to determine the effect of a low carbohydrate diet on the body weight and other body parameters, including blood pressure and selected biochemistry indicators. METHODS: The study was carried out in Naim Health Center, Bahrain during the period March 2002 to April 2002. Each individual was followed for 6 weeks while on a low carbohydrate diet, with careful monitoring during the study period. RESULTS: Paired t-test showed statistically significant reduction of waist circumference (p<0.00) and body weight (p<0.00) of the sample population after 6 weeks from the commencement of the diet. The body mass index also showed statistically significant reduction during the study period (p<0.01). Furthermore, blood cholesterol level was reduced (p<0.012). Although there was a statistically significant decrease in the fasting blood sugar levels (p<0.01), the mean readings remained within the normal range of blood sugar levels. There were no statistically significant changes in the levels of urate, creatinine, urea, triglyceride, and in systolic or diastolic blood pressure readings (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: Low carbohydrate diet could help in reducing body weight without any significant harmful …

Explaining Volunteering In Old Age : A Social Reinforcement Perspective, Tsz Wai Lau Sep 2003

Explaining Volunteering In Old Age : A Social Reinforcement Perspective, Tsz Wai Lau

Lingnan Theses

Volunteering has been widely accepted as potentially a very good means to engage older persons and to maximize their contribution to society. There is a need to understand the entire process of volunteering, the reasons that motivate older persons to participate in volunteer services and activities and to appreciate why committed elderly volunteers continue to involve themselves in volunteering. The present study attempts to explore the possible motivational and sustainable aspects in the process of volunteering guided by a social reinforcement perspective. It further aims to propose an explanatory model for the initiation and sustainability of volunteering involving older persons …
