Human Health And Stoic Moral Norms, Lawrence C. Becker Jan 2003

Human Health And Stoic Moral Norms, Lawrence C. Becker

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

For the philosophy of medicine, there are two things of interest about the stoic account of moral norms, quite apart from whether the rest of stoic ethical theory is compelling. One is the stoic version of naturalism: its account of practical reasoning, its solution to the is/ought problem, and its contention that norms for creating, sustaining, or restoring human health are tantamount to moral norms. The other is the stoic account of human agency: its description of the intimate connections between human health, rational agency, and moral norms. There is practical guidance to be gained from exploring those connections, whether …

Educating For Social Responsibility: Changing The Syllabus Of Developmental Biology, Scott F. Gilbert, A. Fausto-Sterling Jan 2003

Educating For Social Responsibility: Changing The Syllabus Of Developmental Biology, Scott F. Gilbert, A. Fausto-Sterling

Biology Faculty Works

Developmental biology is deeply embedded in the social issues of our times. Such topics as cloning, stems cells, reproductive technologies, sex selection, environmental hormone mimics and gene therapy all converge on developmental biology. It is therefore critical that developmental biologists learn about the possible social consequences of their work and of the possible molding of their discipline by social forces. We present two models for integrating social issues into the developmental biology curriculum. One model seeks to place discussions of social issues into the laboratory portion of the curriculum; the other model seeks to restructure the course, such that developmental …

The Morphogenesis Of Evolutionary Developmental Biology, Scott F. Gilbert Jan 2003

The Morphogenesis Of Evolutionary Developmental Biology, Scott F. Gilbert

Biology Faculty Works

The early studies of evolutionary developmental biology (Evo-Devo) come from several sources. Tributaries flowing into Evo-Devo came from such disciplines as embryology, developmental genetics, evolutionary biology, ecology, paleontology, systematics, medical embryology and mathematical modeling. This essay will trace one of the major pathways, that from evolutionary embryology to Evo-Devo and it will show the interactions of this pathway with two other sources of Evo-Devo: ecological developmental biology and medical developmental biology. Together, these three fields are forming a more inclusive evolutionary developmental biology that is revitalizing and providing answers to old and important questions involving the formation of biodiversity on …

Diet And Physical Performance, Scott J. Montain, Andrew J. Young

United States Army: Publications

This paper provides a historical summary of military nutrition research into the role of diet for sustaining soldier physical performance. Studies of underfeeding document that physical performance is preserved during several days of underfeeding provided sufficient carbohydrate and minerals are consumed to minimize the diuresis associated with semi-starvation diets and serial intake of carbohydrate is available to support metabolism during prolonged work. The Military Recommended Dietary Allowances, AR 40-25, currently recommends that when restricted rations are required, that the ration contain at least 1100–1500 kcal, 50–70 g of protein, and a minimum of 100 g of carbohydrate on a daily …

The Role Of Natural Calcium Oxalate Crystals In Plant Defense Against Chewing Insects, Sarah J. Doege Jan 2003

The Role Of Natural Calcium Oxalate Crystals In Plant Defense Against Chewing Insects, Sarah J. Doege

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Calcium oxalate is the most abundant insoluble mineral found in plants and it is common among many plant families. Calcium oxalate crystals in plants can appear as irregular rectangles, spiked balls, or needles. The formidable appearance of these crystals has lead to speculation that they might serve as a form of pest control by deterring chewing insects. We utilized mutant plant lines to assess the effects of plant calcium oxalate crystals on the survival and feeding habits of chewing insects. We have taken advantage of calcium oxalate-deficient (cod) mutants of the barrel medic, Medicago truncatula Calcium oxalate crystals accumulate in …

Adolescent Sexuality: Behavior And Meaning, Lisa J. Crockett, Marcela Raffaelli, Kristin L. Moilanen Jan 2003

Adolescent Sexuality: Behavior And Meaning, Lisa J. Crockett, Marcela Raffaelli, Kristin L. Moilanen

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The emerging sexuality that accompanies adolescence poses fundamental challenges for young people. These include adjusting to the altered appearance and functioning of a sexually maturing body, learning to deal with sexual desires, confronting sexual attitudes and values, experimenting with sexual behaviors, and integrating these feelings, attitudes, and experiences into a developing sense of self. The challenge is accentuated by the unfamiliar excitement of sexual arousal, the attention connected to being sexually attractive, and the new level of physical intimacy and psychological vulnerability created by sexual encounters. Adolescents’ responses to these challenges are profoundly influenced by the social and cultural context …

Onset Of Clinical Immunity To Plasmodium Falciparum Among Javanese Migrants To Indonesian Papua, J. Kevin Baird, United States Naval Medical Research Unit #2, M. J. Barcus, I. R.F. Elyazar, J. D. Maguire, D. J. Fryauff, T. L. Richie, National Center For Health Research, W. Kalalo Jan 2003

Onset Of Clinical Immunity To Plasmodium Falciparum Among Javanese Migrants To Indonesian Papua, J. Kevin Baird, United States Naval Medical Research Unit #2, M. J. Barcus, I. R.F. Elyazar, J. D. Maguire, D. J. Fryauff, T. L. Richie, National Center For Health Research, W. Kalalo

United States Public Health Resources

Onset of clinical immunity to Plasmodium falciparum occurred among Javanese migrants to Indonesian Papua. Surveillance of the 243 migrants investigated began on the day of their arrival in Indonesian Papua and continued for 33 months. Asexual parasitaemia without fever constituted objective evidence of clinical immunity. Compared with .rst infection, the odds ratio (OR) for not having fever at the fourth infection within 24 months was 3.2 [95% con.dence interval (CI)=1.03–10.2; P=0.02]. The corresponding OR with fewer infections within 24 months was not distinguishable from 1.0. The level of the fourth parasitaemia within 24 months (N=58) was classified …

Attenuated Growth Of Breast-Fed Children Exposed To Increased Concentrations Of Methylmercury And Polychlorinated Biphenyls, Philippe Grandjean, Esben Budtz-Jørgensen, Ulrike Steuerwald, Birger Heinzow, Larry L. Needham, Poul J. Jørgensen, Pál Weihe Jan 2003

Attenuated Growth Of Breast-Fed Children Exposed To Increased Concentrations Of Methylmercury And Polychlorinated Biphenyls, Philippe Grandjean, Esben Budtz-Jørgensen, Ulrike Steuerwald, Birger Heinzow, Larry L. Needham, Poul J. Jørgensen, Pál Weihe

United States Public Health Resources

Breast-feeding has been linked to slowed postnatal growth. Although the basis for this "weanling’s dilemma" is unclear, environmental contaminants in human milk may be of relevance. We studied a Faroese birth cohort of 182 singleton children, born at term in 1994-95. Concentrations of mercury in cord blood and of polychlorinated biphenyls in maternal milk were measured, and duration of breast-feeding was recorded. At 18 months, children who had been exclusively breast-fed for at least 6 months weighed 0.59 kg less [95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.03, 1.16 kg] and were 1.50 cm [95% CI = 0.52, 2.47 cm] shorter than …

The Ascendancy Of Amblyomma Americanum As A Vector Of Pathogens Affecting Humans In The United States, James E. Childs, Christopher D. Paddock Jan 2003

The Ascendancy Of Amblyomma Americanum As A Vector Of Pathogens Affecting Humans In The United States, James E. Childs, Christopher D. Paddock

United States Public Health Resources

Until the 1990s, Amblyomma americanum was regarded primarily as a nuisance species, but a tick of minor importance as a vector of zoonotic pathogens affecting humans. With the recent discoveries of Ehrlichia chaffeensis, Ehrlichia ewingii, and “Borrelia lonestari,” the public health relevance of lone star ticks is no longer in question. During the next 25 years, the number of cases of human disease caused by A. americanum-associated pathogens will probably increase. Based on current trajectories and historic precedents, the increase will be primarily driven by biological and environmental factors that alter the geographic distribution and intensity of …

Absence Of Interferon-Γ–Inducible Gene Igtp Does Not Significantly Alter The Development Of Chagasic Cardiomyopathy In Mice Infected With Trypanosoma Cruzi (Brazil Strain), A. P. De Souza, B. Tang, H. B. Tanowitz, S. M. Factor, V. Shtutin, J. Shirani, G. A. Taylor, L. M. Weiss, L. A. Jelicks Jan 2003

M. Factor, V. Shtutin, J. Shirani, G. A. Taylor, L. M. Weiss, L. A. Jelicks

United States Public Health Resources

Interferon-γ (IFN-γ) contributes to host resistance during acute infection with Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas’ disease. Inducibly expressed guanosine triphosphatase (IGTP), a 48-kDa guanosine triphosphatase (GTPase), is a member of a family of GTPase proteins inducibly expressed by IFN-γ. The expression pattern of IGTP suggests that it may mediate IFN-γ–induced responses in a variety of cell types. IGTP has been demonstrated to be important for control of Toxoplasma gondii infection but not for resistance against Listeria monocytogenes. We evaluated the role of IGTP in development of chronic chagasic cardiomyopathy in IGTP null mice and C57X129sv (wild …

Impaired Receptor-Mediated Endocytosis By The Asialoglycoprotein Receptor In Ethanol-Fed Mice: Implications For Studying The Role Of This Receptor In Alcoholic Apoptosis, Shana R. Dalton, Robert L. Wiegert, Cheryl R. Baldwin, Karen M. Kassel, Carol A. Casey Jan 2003

Casey

United States Public Health Resources

During receptor-mediated endocytosis (RME), extracellular molecules are internalized after being recognized and bound to specific cell surface receptors. In previous studies of the asialoglycoprotein receptor (ASGPR) in rats, we showed that ethanol impairs RME at multiple ASGPR sites. Ethanol administration has been shown to increase apoptosis, and we demonstrated increased sensitization to apoptotic induction in hepatocytes from ethanol-fed rats. Although a physiological role for the ASGPR has not been identified, investigators have shown its involvement in the uptake/clearance of apoptotic cells in vitvo. This suggests a potential role for the ASGPR in the removal of apoptotic cells, and the recent …

Transfer Regulations And Cost-Effectiveness Analysis, Eric A. Posner Jan 2003

Transfer Regulations And Cost-Effectiveness Analysis, Eric A. Posner

Articles

Recent scholarship on regulatory oversight has focused on cost-benefit analysis of prescriptive regulations--regulations that restrict behavior such as pollution-and their use to cure market failures, and has overlooked the vast number of transfer regulations. Transfer regulations are regulations that channel funds to beneficiaries. These regulations are authorized by statutes that establish entitlement programs like Medicare and Social Security, pay one-time distributions to victims of misfortunes such as natural disasters and the 9/11 terrorist attack, and fund pork barrel spending. Cost-benefit analysis cannot be used to evaluate transfer regulations because all transfer regulations fail cost-benefit analysis; cost-effectiveness analysis, however, can be …

Where Involuntary Commitment, Civil Liberties, And The Right To Mental Health Care Collide: An Overview Of California's Mental Illness System, Meredith Karasch Jan 2003

Where Involuntary Commitment, Civil Liberties, And The Right To Mental Health Care Collide: An Overview Of California's Mental Illness System, Meredith Karasch

UC Law Journal

This Note provides an overview of California's mental health care system. It discusses the history of the civil liberty movement as it pertains to mental health care and its impact on the current system. The Note argues that the present system is inadequate because of the obstacles to obtaining treatment and, when it is available, the poor quality of mental health care. This Note also explores the societal consequences of the current system and offers some alternatives.

This Note does not argue for confinement without cause or without safeguards. Rather, in an effort to throw some light on a very …

My Life As A "Woman": Editing The World; And, Liberal Catholicism Reexamined, Margaret O'Brien Steinfels

Marianist Award Lectures

Margaret O'Brien Steinfels recounts her story as a woman in a high role in the workplace and the Catholic sphere. She highlights the supposed desire of American Catholics for a women's revolution in many aspects of Catholic life and the Church's response to such stances and voices. Peter Steinfels argues for an emergence and prominence in liberal Catholicism as a heroic stance to take amid the pains of the Church and of the world.

Laos National Growth And Poverty Eradication Strategy, Lao People's Democratic Republic Jan 2003

Laos National Growth And Poverty Eradication Strategy, Lao People's Democratic Republic

Global CWD Repository

The National Growth and Poverty Eradication Strategy (NGPES) is the strategic framework under which all of the Government's future growth and poverty eradication programs will be developed and implemented. The NGPES is the result of a process that started in 1996 when the 6th Party Congress defined the long-term development objective as freeing the country from the status of least-developed country (LDC) by 2020. The NGPES is a comprehensive framework for growth and development, and has a particular focus on the improvement of the poverty situation in the poorest districts. It has thus a dual objective: enhancing growth and development, …
