The Anguish Of Snails: Native American Folklore In The West, Barre Toelken Jan 2003

The Anguish Of Snails: Native American Folklore In The West, Barre Toelken

All USU Press Publications

After a career of working and living with Native Americans and studying their traditions, Barre Toelken has written this sweeping study of Native American folklore in the West. Within a framework of performance theory, cultural worldview, and collaborative research, he examines Native American visual arts, dance, oral tradition (story and song), humor, and patterns of thinking and discovery to demonstrate what can be gleaned from Indian traditions by Natives and non-Natives alike. In the process he considers popular distortions of Indian beliefs, demystifies many traditions by showing how they can be comprehended within their cultural contexts, considers why some aspects …

Laughter, contemporary theory suggests, is often aggressive in some manner and may be prompted by a sudden perception of incongruity combined with memories of past emotional experience. Given this importance of the past to our recognition of the comic, it follows that some "traditions" dispose us to ludic responses. The studies in Of Corpse: Death and Humor in Folklore and Popular Culture examine specific interactions of text (jokes, poetry, epitaphs, iconography, film drama) and social context (wakes, festivals, disasters) that shape and generate laughter. Uniquely, however, the essays here peruse a remarkable paradox-the convergence of death and humor.

Willingness-To-Pay For Information: Experimental Evidence On Product Traceability From The U.S.A., Canada, The U.K., And Japan, David L. Dickenson, Deevon Bailey

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Traceable product systems provide a tool to track the inputs of a final good throughout the entire production chain. This tool can provide valuable information to consumers on verifiable characteristics of the product, can improve the speed of product recall, and can help identify areas of inefficiency in the product chain. Recent examples of traceable systems include those used in the diamond, lumber, and food industries. This article reports results from a case study on traceability using Vickrey auctions to generate willingness-to-pay (WTP) data for traceability and related product characteristics. Specifically, we examine WTP for traceable meat, which is a …

Expression Of Spot In Borrelia Burgdorferi During Serum Starvation, Marc B. Concepcion, David R. Nelson Jan 2003

Expression Of Spot In Borrelia Burgdorferi During Serum Starvation, Marc B. Concepcion, David R. Nelson

Cell and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications

Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease, is transmitted by the tick Ixodes scapularis. A 2.9-kb fragment containing a putative spoT gene was isolated from B. burgdorferi genomic DNA by PCR amplification and cloned into a pBAD24 vector. The cloned gene complemented Escherichia coli mutant strain CF1693, which contains deletions of both the relA and spoT genes. The spoT gene in E. coli encodes a bifunctional enzyme capable of synthesizing and degrading (p)ppGpp, which mediates the stringent response during carbon source starvation. B. burgdorferi has been reported to have a stress response to serum starvation. Thin-layer chromatography …

Evidence For Disease-Related Amphibian Decline In Colorado, Erin Muths, Paul Stephen Corn, Allan P. Pessier, D. Earl Green Jan 2003

Evidence For Disease-Related Amphibian Decline In Colorado, Erin Muths, Paul Stephen Corn, Allan P. Pessier, D. Earl Green

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The recent discovery of a pathogenic fungus (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis) associated with declines of frogs in the American and Australian tropics, suggests that at least the proximate cause, may be known for many previously unexplained amphibian declines. We have monitored boreal toads in Colorado since 1991 at four sites using capture–recapture of adults and counts of egg masses to examine the dynamics of this metapopulation. Numbers of male toads declined in 1996 and 1999 with annual survival rate averaging 78% from 1991 to 1994, 45% in 1995 and 3% between 1998 and 1999. Numbers of egg masses also declined. …

Manure Matters (newsletter)

Integrating Animal Feeding Decisions into CNMP Processes: Part 1

Environmental planning in animal production systems often requires an estimate of nutrient excretion. Standard values published by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) (SCS 1992), American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE 1999), and MidWest Plan Service (MWPS 2000) commonly have been used for this purpose. However, these current procedures do not reflect the impact of producers' animal dietary decisions on nutrient excretion. The increasing variety of feed ingredient options, changes in nutritional programs to match improving genetic potential, and feeding strategies designed to reduce nutrient excretion are influencing the amount of …

G03-1487 Fat And Fat Substitutes, Georgia Jones Jan 2003

G03-1487 Fat And Fat Substitutes, Georgia Jones

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

For some people, fat has a negative connotation. However, fat is a necessary nutrient and provides many functions in food products.

Fats are a source of energy for the body and supply essential fatty acids, such as linoleic and linolenic. They are required for maintaining healthy skin and regulating cholesterol production. Fats are used to carry fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K and aid in their absorption from the intestine.

Fats play a key role in determining texture, taste and flavor of foods and affect the acceptability of food. They provide the smooth texture of salad dressing, the creamy …

Diabetes Type II is a significant disease for the American population as a whole but has a dramatic impact upon lower income Hispanic populations. The purpose of this study is to deliver nutritional intervention strategies to allow lower income Hispanics to control their diabetes disease process, empowering them to manage their disease over their lifetime. This needs assessment provides an in-depth review of the demographics of the Hispanic population identified as being at risk for improper diabetes disease management. Specifically information was captured about lifestyles, eating habits and daily food selection choices and Hispanic teaching tools available. This information will …

Effect Of A Low Phytate, Nutrient Dense Corn On Pig Performance, Mike Brumm Jan 2003

Effect Of A Low Phytate, Nutrient Dense Corn On Pig Performance, Mike Brumm

Nebraska Swine Reports

An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of a low phytate, nutrient dense corn variety on pig performance, fecal phosphorus and fecal nitrogen. Experimental treatments were: 1) corn-soybean meal diets formulated with purchased yellow corn; 2) similar diets formulated with 500 FTU/kg phytase; 3) diets formulated with a nutrient dense corn variety having a reduced phytic acid, elevated lysine, and higher energy compared to yellow corn; and 4) diets formulated with the nutrient dense corn variety and phytase at 500 FTU/kg to 130 lb BW and blended with yellow corn thereafter based on estimated available phosphorus. There was no …

Omega-3 Fatty Acids And Swine Reproduction - A Review, Duane Reese Jan 2003

Omega-3 Fatty Acids And Swine Reproduction - A Review, Duane Reese

Nebraska Swine Reports

A literature review was conducted to examine the role dietary omega-3 fatty acids may play in swine reproduction. Omega-3 fatty acids are not normally present to any great extent in practical swine diets, but they are increasingly important in human and pet health. Swine nutritionists have focused primarily on the effect omega-3 fatty acids may have on littler size, piglet preweaning mortality, and boar fertility. Feeding omega-3 fatty acids to sows has not generally improved litter size. Piglet preweaning mortality may be improved by omega-3 fatty acid supplementation provided sows are allowed to farrow naturally (without induction). Boar fertility seems …

Homeless Legal Advocacy: New Challenges And Directions For The Future, L. Hafetz Jan 2003

Homeless Legal Advocacy: New Challenges And Directions For The Future, L. Hafetz

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This Article examines the role of lawyers for homeless people. It argues that while even the most zealous legal advocacy cannot alone solve homelessness, it remains an important tool because of the assistance it provides to individuals, its impact on broader legal rules, and its potential role in shaping public perception and debate. The Article also maintains that legal advocacy works best when combined with a holistic approach that addresses homeless clients' non-legal needs, such as housing placement, case management, medical and psychiatric care, job training, and substance abuse counseling. It further argues that, to the extent possible, lawyers for …

Healthy Children, Healthy Communities: Schools, Parks, Recreation, And Sustainable Regional Planning, Robert Garcia, Erica S. Flores, Sophia Mei-Ling

Fordham Urban Law Journal

Obesity and inactivity have become a troubling crisis for today’s youth. Low-income communities and communities of color are disproportionately affected by these conditions, due to a denial of the benefits of safe open spaces for physical activity and opportunities to be active. The article describes the epidemic of obesity and unfitness in the United States and the statistics associated with inactivity, as well as the health impacts associated with being overweight and obese and the importance of physical activity. Along with the health implications, the trend in obesity is primed to carry huge direct and indirect financial costs. This health …
