Effects Of Thyroid Hormones On Basal And Stimulated Gastric Acid Secretion Due To Histamine, Carbachol And Pentagastrin In Rats, Fatemeh N. Rafsanjani, Saleh Z. Asl, Mohammad K. Naseri, Jalal Vahedian Apr 2003

Effects Of Thyroid Hormones On Basal And Stimulated Gastric Acid Secretion Due To Histamine, Carbachol And Pentagastrin In Rats, Fatemeh N. Rafsanjani, Saleh Z. Asl, Mohammad K. Naseri, Jalal Vahedian

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: Thyroid hormones affect gastric acid secretion. As the mechanism of this effect has not been fully known, in this experimental study the isolated gastric acid secretion of hypothyroid and hyperthyroid rats were compared with control group by the administration of different doses of pentagastrin, histamine and carbachol as gastric acid secretion stimulators. METHODS: This study was carried out in Ahwaz University of Medical Sciences, Ahwaz, Iran in the year 2000. Each group were consisted of 8 rats (N-mari) of both sexes with a mean weight of 246 +/- 5 grams. Hypothyroid and hyperthyroid states were induced respectively by adding …

Plasma And Red Blood Cells Membrane Lipid Concentration Of Sickle Cell Disease Patients, Zuhair M. Marzouki, Samir M. Khoja

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to determine the concentration of plasma and red blood cells (RBCs) membrane lipids in Saudi sickle cell disease (SCD) patients. METHODS: This study was carried out at the Hematology Clinic, King Abdul-Aziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from October 1998 to October 1999. Lipid concentrations were determined in plasma and RBC membrane of 81 SCD patients and 66 normal healthy matched individuals (control). Different lipid parameters were measured according to standardized enzymatic assay methods. RESULTS: The plasma concentrations of total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol of SCD patients were significantly decreased (p<0.001), whereas the plasma concentrations of high density lipoprotein phospholipids were significantly increased (p<0.001). The plasma concentrations of apo A and apo B were significantly decreased (p<0.001) in SCD patients. However, the concentration of total cholesterol of RBC membrane was significantly increased (p<0.001) in SCD patients, while the phospholipid content was significantly decreased (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: The significant increase of RBC membrane cholesterol concentration in SCD patients possibly is responsible to the change in RBC membrane fluidity that may play a direct role in the sickling phenomenon of RBCs in SCD.

Malaria is one of the leading illnesses and causes of death in Ghana and many West African countries. This virus, though curable, has proven itself to be detrimental to many. Everyday precautions and curative measures, such as insect repellants, mosquito coils, mosquito netting, daily or weekly anti-malarial drugs and the like are used to increase comfort and most importantly sustain life. This particular study was not only comprised to demonstrate the various treatments and cures available, but dares to look at the options of people that may or may not have the resources to obtain the aforementioned preventive measures. Transfer Regulations And Cost-Effectiveness Analysis, Eric A. Posner Apr 2003

Transfer Regulations And Cost-Effectiveness Analysis, Eric A. Posner

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Recent scholarship on regulatory oversight has focused on cost-benefit analysis of prescriptive regulations – regulations that restrict behavior such as pollution – and their use to cure market failures, and has overlooked the vast number of transfer regulations. Transfer regulations are regulations that channel funds to beneficiaries. These regulations are authorized by statutes that establish entitlement programs like Medicare and Social Security, pay one-time distributions to victims of misfortunes such as natural disasters and the 9/11 terrorist attack, and fund pork barrel spending. Cost-benefit analysis cannot be used to evaluate transfer regulations because all transfer regulations fail cost-benefit analysis, but …

Those with low income, especially women of African American and Hispanic heritage have the greatest risk of inactivity and obesity. A 4-session (Internet and video) intervention with healthy snack and gym labs was tested in 2 (gym lab in 1) urban low–middle-income middle schools to improve low fat diet and moderate and vigorous physical activity.1 The gym lab was particularly beneficial (p = .002). Fat in diet decreased with each Internet session in which students participated. Percentage of fat in food was reduced significantly p = .018 for Black, White, and Black/Native American girls in the intervention group. Interventions delivered …

Productive Partnerships For Food: Principles And Strategies, Ardyth H. Gillespie, Leigh A. Gantner, Susie Craig, Kathleen Dischner

Journal of Extension

This article guides Extension educators in facilitating university-community partnerships in their locality. Principles and strategies for building effective and productive university-community partnerships around food that integrate research, education, and action are discussed, drawing from three examples. Partnerships are based on the principles of building off of community assets, diverse stakeholder involvement, guidance by community interests, and integration of research with practice. The partnership strategies encourage partners to develop common goals, clarify roles and responsibilities, develop protocols, commit the necessary resources, and create a flexible and trusting atmosphere. The need to balance multiple interests in a partnership is discussed.

Predictors Of Oral Health Behaviors: Examining The Effect Of Patient Perceived Humanistic Attitude In The Context Of The Health Belief Model, Linda Leigh Hawkins Carroll

Health Services Research Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to test the explanatory power of The Health Belief Model with the added environmental condition of perceived humanistic attitude of a dental hygienist in its ability to predict individual's performance of oral disease prevention behaviors. A cross section survey of an intact group of 1,943 full time employees of Old Dominion University was conducted. The response rate was 52% (n = 1001). An exclusionary rule eliminated respondents who did not have a dental hygienist provide preventive services during dental visits. Seven hundred and fifty four were included in the study analyses. The study participants …

Metabolism Of Fructooligosaccharides By Lactobacillus Paracasei 1195, Handan Kaplan, Robert W. Hutkins Apr 2003

Metabolism Of Fructooligosaccharides By Lactobacillus Paracasei 1195, Handan Kaplan, Robert W. Hutkins

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Fermentation of fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and other oligosaccharides has been suggested to be an important property for the selection of bacterial strains used as probiotics. However, little information is available on FOS transport and metabolism by lactic acid bacteria and other probiotic bacteria. The objectives of this research were to identify and characterize the FOS transport system of Lactobacillus paracasei 1195. Radiolabeled FOS was synthesized enzymatically from [3H]sucrose and purified by column and thin-layer chromatography, yielding three main products: glucose (G) α-1,2 linked to two, three, or four fructose (F) units (GF2, GF3, and GF …

Causes Of Death In The Eastern Mediterranean Region During The Years 1998-2000, Sherine Shawky

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to consider the available mortality data as an insight to epitomize the mortality pattern and the main leading causes of death specific to the Easter Mediterranean Region (EMR) in order to set priorities for future research in the region. METHODS: Data was taken from the last 3 World Health Organization (WHO) mortality statistics. Crude mortality rates were compared between the 6 WHO regions for the years 1998, 1999 and 2000. Proportional mortality and standardized proportional mortality ratios were calculated for the causes of death and types of malignant neoplasm deaths and compared between the EMR and …
