Behavioral Approach To Analyzing Corporate Failures, A. Mechele Dickerson
Behavioral Approach To Analyzing Corporate Failures, A. Mechele Dickerson
Faculty Publications
Recent corporate failures indicate that existing laws fail to give boards of directors adequate incentives to acknowledge that some financially troubled firms simply cannot be salvaged. Relying primarily on insights from law and behavioral science literature, this Article notes that directors have a natural tendency to underestimate risks and overestimate their ability to save an insolvent or near insolvent firm. This Article urges the imposition of a duty to file a timely bankruptcy petition because such a duty will encourage directors to consider the interests of all the firms' constituents, including workers, creditors, and the local community, when making decisions …

Acculturation As A Developmental Pathway, David Lackland Sam, Brit Oppedal
Acculturation As A Developmental Pathway, David Lackland Sam, Brit Oppedal
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
This chapter looks at some developmental issues in the acculturation of children and adolescents with immigrant backgrounds. In addition to raising critical questions about this line of research, the chapter examines some underlying assumptions and their implications for the study of acculturation in younger people. It is argued that ambiguities in the final outcome of acculturation and differences in acculturation experiences of adults and children make it necessary to bring developmental perspectives closer into this line of research among children and adolescents in immigrant families. Against this background a modified developmental contextual model is suggested as an alternate perspective to …

Three lepidopteran cereal stemborers, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Crambidae), Busseola fusca Fuller, and Sesamia calamistis Hampson (Noctuidae) were collected from maize and sorghum in Ethiopia. The noctuid stemborers are indigenous to Africa while C. partellus is an introduced species from Asia. In 1999, the Asian stemborer parasitoid, Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Braconidae) was found to be widespread in Ethiopia, even though it had never been released in the country. In addition to attacking Chilo partellus, Cotesia flavipes was reared from B. fusca and S. calamistis. The origin of C. flavipes in Ethiopia may have been Somalia where it was released in 1997 …

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) Cambodia, in close collaboration with various government institutions, has been conducting poverty analysis and mapping refinement. The main objectives of the refinement have been (i) to refine core poor areas in Cambodia, (ii) to identify priority areas for social sector interventions such as those targeted to adult and child education, health and nutrition interventions, and (iii) to identify priority areas for assisting variable population groups such as those in flood and drought prone areas, forest and fishing concession areas.
Outcomes Of Individual Vs. Group Instruction In Efnep, Jamie Dollahite, Michelle Scott-Pierce
Outcomes Of Individual Vs. Group Instruction In Efnep, Jamie Dollahite, Michelle Scott-Pierce
Journal of Extension
This article presents an analysis of self-reported behavioral outcomes from three years' of New York State EFNEP evaluation data. Participant instruction has shifted from a primarily one-on-one format to group instruction because of staff safety concerns and the impact of welfare reform on recruitment, as well as financial constraints. The question is raised regarding the cost-effectiveness of group education as currently delivered. If groups are unavoidable in the current climate, educators need to identify strategies to maximize impact among participants educated in group settings.

Integrating Value-Added Research With Field Management Practice: An Effective Extension Mechanism At The University Of Maryland, Y Martin Lo, John E. Hall, Robert J. Kratochvil, William J. Kenworthy
Journal of Extension
An effective Extension mechanism integrating value-added research with field management practice has been developed in Maryland. Through this mechanism, farmers are engaged in an alternative crop production process. We expect that value-added enhancements can be achieved and, subsequently, a sustainable/profitable agricultural community will emerge. The diverse research team ensures that a comprehensive approach to developing value-added products/markets will occur. Additionally, we expect that the effective coordination of scholarly research and Extension that is the cornerstone of this project will lead directly to improved and profitable farming practices and an enhanced quality of life for farmers and their rural communities.
The Ecological Ramifications Of Disease And Density In The Caribbean Spiny Lobster, Panulirus Argus, Donald C. Behringer Jr.
The Ecological Ramifications Of Disease And Density In The Caribbean Spiny Lobster, Panulirus Argus, Donald C. Behringer Jr.
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
In 1999, I discovered the first virus known to be pathogenic to any species of lobster. HLV-PA is a pathogenic herpes-like virus that infects juvenile Caribbean spiny lobster, Panulirus argus, in the waters off south Florida (USA), and it alters the behavior and ecology of this species in fundamental ways. Gross signs of HLV-PA infection are lethargy, morbidity, cessation of molting, and discolored, “milky” hemolymph that does not clot. HLV-PA infects the hemocytes of host lobsters, specifically the hyalinocytes and semi-granulocytes, but not the granulocytes. When hemolymph from infected donors was injected into healthy juvenile lobsters, 90% of the …

Male Reproductive Dynamics In The Caribbean Spiny Lobster Panulirus Argus, Jamie S. Heisig
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
The population size structure of the Caribbean Spiny Lobster, Panulirus argus, in the Florida Keys, Florida (USA) has undergone a dramatic shift as a result of fishing pressure on the large individuals of the population. Male lobsters are affected most by fishing because of sexual dimorphism in size and other studies have shown that male size has direct impacts on reproductive output (i.e., number of fertilized eggs/clutch) that are independent of female size. To assess more precisely the impact of male size on fertilization success, I conducted laboratory experiments and field observations to examine various male reproductive attributes over …
Hyaluronate Lyase Gene Of Streptococcus Pyogenes: Molecular Characterization And Regulation, Sheryl Lynne Walton
Hyaluronate Lyase Gene Of Streptococcus Pyogenes: Molecular Characterization And Regulation, Sheryl Lynne Walton
Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences
Streptococcus pyogenes causes an assortment of diseases ranging from pharyngitis to necrotizing fasciitis. This bacterium has the ability to elaborate several extracellular products capable of causing tissue damage; one of which is a hyaluronate lyase. Little information is available regarding the regulation of streptococcal hyaluronidase. As such, the expression of hylA in the hyaluronate lyase-producing strain ATCC 10403 and in strains that do not produce detectable enzyme was analyzed by RT-PCR and quantitative PCR. Hyaluronate lyase transcript was detected throughout growth for all strains; however, expression of hylA in the enzymatically inactive strains, 71698 and SF370, was determined …
Real-Time Study Of Multidrug Resistance Mechanism In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Using Nanoparticle Optics And Single Live Cell Imaging, Sophia Vasou Kyriacou
Real-Time Study Of Multidrug Resistance Mechanism In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Using Nanoparticle Optics And Single Live Cell Imaging, Sophia Vasou Kyriacou
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
This thesis centers on the study of the xenobiotic efflux system in Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which is a ubiquitous bacterium. It resists many structurally and functionally diverse substrates due to expression of Mex-extrusion pumps, including MexAB-OprM, MexCD-OprJ, MexEF-OprN and MexXY-OprM systems. Despite extensive research, the structure and mechanism of multidrug resistance is unclear (1-9). For example, (i) how do MexA, MexB and OprM proteins assemble to extrude antibiotics? (ii) What is the antibiotic susceptibility of MexA, MexB, and OprM proteins? (iii) How do substrates cross the outer membrane of P. aeruginosa? (iv) Where are antibiotics accumulated inside the cell? This thesis …

Characterization Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Protein Ser/Thr Phosphatase T1 And Comparison To Its Mammalian Homolog Pp5., Jee-Yeong Jeong, Jeremiah Johns, Christopher Sinclair, Jung-Min Park, Sandra S. Rossie
Department of Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Background
Protein Ser/Thr phosphatase 5 (PP5) and its Saccharomyces cerevisiae homolog protein phosphatase T1 (Ppt1p) each contain an N-terminal domain consisting of several tetratricopeptide repeats (TPRs) and a C-terminal catalytic domain that is related to the catalytic subunits of protein phosphatases 1 and 2A, and calcineurin. Analysis of yeast Ppt1p could provide important clues to the function of PP5 and its homologs, however it has not yet been characterized at the biochemical or cellular level.
Results
The specific activity of recombinant Ppt1p toward the artificial substrates 32P-myelin basic protein (MBP) and 32P-casein was similar to that of PP5. …
