An Investigation Of The Relationship Among Life-Skills, Self-Esteem, And Well-Being In Adults, Scott David Meche
An Investigation Of The Relationship Among Life-Skills, Self-Esteem, And Well-Being In Adults, Scott David Meche
Doctoral Dissertations
This study examined the relationship among life-skills, self-esteem, and well-being in 278 adults. Adults were classified into three age groups. Of the 278 participants, 96 were young adults, 92 were middle-aged, and 90 were older adults. Life-skills, global organizations of general coping skills that are learned behaviors which enable effective functioning, were assessed with the Life-Skills Inventory - Adult Form (Gazda, Illovsky, & Taylor, 1991). Analyses were performed to understand the influence of four generic life-skills areas, interpersonal communication/human relations, problem-solving/decision making, identity development/purpose in life, and physical fitness/health maintenance, on self-esteem. Self-esteem was measured with the Self-Esteem Inventory-Adult Form …

Family And Career Decision-Making Among Lds Women At Brigham Young University, Jennifer M. Vigil, Bonnie Ballif-Spanvill, Rebecca R. Nichols
Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy
This study explores how college-aged women who are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) make decisions about choosing a career or staying home full-time. It examines how committed they are to multiple role planning, what influence their mothers have on their decision-making process, how much they know about the roles they will assume in the future, how certain they are about choosing these roles, and how involved they are in the decision-making process itself. The LDS Decision-Making (LDSDM) scale was answered by 149 junior and senior women at Brigham Young University. Four factors were found …

Auto-Ethnography As A Communicative And Therapeutic Means Of Addressing Eating Disorders, Julie Irvin
Auto-Ethnography As A Communicative And Therapeutic Means Of Addressing Eating Disorders, Julie Irvin
Honors Theses
Under the premise that human beings are natural storytellers, narratives are an essential part of our lives and the way we shape and form our stories impacts our daily activities. When life struggles transpire, we typically make sense of our world through narratives, which is why therapists sometimes draw upon narrative therapy. By exploring different types of narratives-the basic genre of a life-story, testimonio, literary narrative, ethnography, and auto-ethnography-the mode that presents itself as a viable means of intrapersonal communication, possibly producing change, is auto-ethnography. Examining the need for narrative within the conditions of eating disorders, the question arises as …

The Incoherence Of Punishment In Antitrust, Spencer Weber Waller
The Incoherence Of Punishment In Antitrust, Spencer Weber Waller
Chicago-Kent Law Review
Antitrust has a complex set of criminal and civil remedies enforced by a multiplicity of public and private actors. Antitrust remedies are frequently analyzed from the point of view of deterrence and compensation, but only rarely from the perspective of punishment. The few debates about punishment concern whether defendants are over-punished or under-punished. This Article analyzes a different question about punishment in antitrust—namely that total punishment in any given antitrust case varies dramatically for offenses with identical or similar status under the law and there is no a prioi way to predict punishment levels for a particular case or a …

Characteristics Of Effective Training: Developing A Model To Motivate Action, Dena Wise, Patsy Ezell
Journal of Extension
This article outlines the process through which the University of Tennessee PACE leadership team identified a successful model for training welfare-to-work facilitators. The article reviews findings on effective training, reports the process and outcomes of training model development, and suggests practical ways for implementing the resulting model in the classroom. When used with a broad range of learners, the model has proven effective in training facilitators to focus on educational process and behavior change as well as information content in their program delivery.

Law Quadrangle (formerly Law Quad Notes)
From assaying 200 years of judicial review - Is it good? Is it constitutional? - to trying to peer through the haze of the future that the life sciences are leading us into, Law School conferences and symposia during this academic year challenged and stretchd thinking well beyond the usual, daily intellectual exercise that is considered SOP here.
The following stories report on the winter term's five major conferences, four held at hte Law School and one held at the University of Michigan Business School as a joint prospect of the Law School and the Business School. (The joint Law …
Geography Of Population Change And Redistribution Within The Post-Frontier Great Plains, J. Clark Archer, Richard Lonsdale
Geography Of Population Change And Redistribution Within The Post-Frontier Great Plains, J. Clark Archer, Richard Lonsdale
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
The popular vision of the Great Plains as a region of ongoing population decline is only partly appropriate. In a fundamental transformation of the population geography previously set in the late 19th century, there is an emerging divide between growing metropolitan centers concentrated along the region's periphery and a vast interior struggling to hold its traditional rural population. The size and geographical distribution of population within the Great Plains region is examined over time with the aid of cartographic and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) techniques. Intercensal net migration rates estimated using the vital statistics-based residual method are mapped by county …
Constructing The Cooper Model Of Folsom Bison Kills On The Southern Plains, Leland Bement
Constructing The Cooper Model Of Folsom Bison Kills On The Southern Plains, Leland Bement
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
The Cooper model postulates that a dichotomy exists in the size and seasonality of bison kill sites from the Folsom age (10,800- 10,200 years ago). This dichotomy is a result of changing settlement and subsistence patterns, from population aggregation in the late summer and early fall for large-scale kills, to a dispersed pattern with small bison kills during all other seasons. Attendant to the change in human population aggregation and number of bison harvested are changes in bison butchering techniques, choice of camp location, and ritual activity. It is postulated that ritual activity of an aggregated group is manifest in …
Development Of A Procedure For Sustainable In Situ Aquifer Denitrification, Imtiyaz A. Khan, Roy F. Spalding
Development Of A Procedure For Sustainable In Situ Aquifer Denitrification, Imtiyaz A. Khan, Roy F. Spalding
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Denitrification experiments have provided data showing the pitfalls and successes in developing a sustainable injection/extraction system in a sand and gravel aquifer. Experiments increase in complexity from continuous injection at one well to automated-pulsed eight well injections. In both continuous and pulsed injection of organic carbon, 40 mg NO3-N l–1 was reduced below the detection limit of < 0.1 mg NO3-N l–1 in the denitrification zones. Under continuous injection, accumulation of bacterial exudates in the vicinity of the injection well resulted in injection well clogging within ten days. Periodic cleaning of the injection well and the adjacent …
Effects Of Diabetes And Aging On Posture And Acceleration Thresholds During Lateral Translations, Samantha Jean Richerson
Effects Of Diabetes And Aging On Posture And Acceleration Thresholds During Lateral Translations, Samantha Jean Richerson
Doctoral Dissertations
Research objectives. One source of falls in the elderly may be an inability to sufficiently adjust to transient postural perturbations or slips. Identifying useful predictors of fall potential, as well as factors that affect the ability of an individual to detect a movement of the standing support surface may provide insight into postural stability and methods to increase stability in elders. To do this, acceleration thresholds to short, precise, lateral platform translations and the resultant psychophysical responses of adults with early Type 2 diabetes to age-matched controls and young adults were measured.
Methods. Using an innovative SLIP-FALLS platform, …
