Unusual Presentations Of Wegener's Granulomatosis: Pitfalls In Early Diagnosis, Syed Mansoor Ahmed Shah, Malik Anas Rabbani, Ambreen Gul, Aasim Ahmad
Section of Nephrology
Wegener's Granulomatosis (WG) is a disorder characterized by necrotizing granulomatous vasculitis that primarily affects the upper and lower respiratory tracts and the kidneys. Although the cause is unknown, there is strong evidence that this is an autoimmune disease and immunosuppressive therapy with cyclophosphamide and corticosteroids efficiently relieves the symptoms and, prevents relapses. We report on four cases of WG that presented with unusual features. The first patient presented with vague joint pain, blackish discoloration of the skin and leg ulcers. The second patient presented as fever of unknown origin and gingival hyperplasia. The third patient presented with hearing loss while …

Dc-Sign (Cd209) Mediates Dengue Virus Infection Of Human Dendritic Cells, Boonrat Tassaneetrithep, Timothy H. Burgess, Angela Granelli-Piperno
Publications
Dengue virus is a single-stranded, enveloped RNA virus that productively infects human dendritic cells (DCs) primarily at the immature stage of their differentiation. We now find that all four serotypes of dengue use DC-SIGN (CD209), a C-type lectin, to infect dendritic cells. THP-1 cells become susceptible to dengue infection after transfection of DC-specific ICAM-3 grabbing nonintegrin (DC-SIGN), or its homologue L-SIGN, whereas the infection of dendritic cells is blocked by anti-DC-SIGN antibodies and not by antibodies to other molecules on these cells. Viruses produced by dendritic cells are infectious for DC-SIGN- and L-SIGN-bearing THP-1 cells and other permissive cell lines. …
Protein Semi-Synthesis In Vivo, Izabela Giriat Stankiewicz
Protein Semi-Synthesis In Vivo, Izabela Giriat Stankiewicz
Student Theses and Dissertations
Incorporation of chemical probes into proteins is a powerful way to elucidate biological processes and to engineer novel function. This thesis describes the ligation of synthetic molecules to target proteins in an intracellular environment, and the use of semi-synthetic proteins for whole animal studies. In the first approach a cellular protein is genetically tagged with one half of a split-intein. The complementary half is linked in vitro to the synthetic probe and this fusion is delivered into cells using a transduction peptide. Association of the intein halves in the cytosol triggers protein transsplicing, resulting in the ligation of the probe …

Aids, Orphans, And Development In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Review Of The Dilemma Of Public Health And Development, Joe Lugalla
Institute for Educational Development, East Africa
HIV/AIDS is having devastating consequences on families, young children, and other vulnerable social groups. In this paper, I review the impact of HIV/AIDS on families and development in sub-Saharan Africa. I begin by showing the magnitude of the problem and the factors that have led to rapid spread of HIV/AIDS in this sub-continent. I discuss gender inequality, poverty, social inequality, and globalization, and show how these facilitate the rapid spread of the epidemic. I show how AIDS is creating a mass of orphans on the one hand, and how it is impacting development and creating new public health contradictions on …

Determinants Of Environmental Innovation Adoption In The Printing Industry, Sandra Rothenberg, Stelios Zyglidopoulos
Determinants Of Environmental Innovation Adoption In The Printing Industry, Sandra Rothenberg, Stelios Zyglidopoulos
Books
In this paper, the impact that the task environment has on the adoption of environmental innovations by firms is examined. Specifically, the impact of two dimensions of a firm's external context - munificence and dynamism - is investigated. Both of these factors are studied by drawing on the relevant literature, developing a number of hypotheses, and testing these hypotheses with data drawn from the U.S. printing industry. The major findings are that firms in highly dynamic environments, as well as firms that have adopted productive innovations, are more likely to adopt a greater number of environmental innovations.

Marketing Communications Demand Creation: Marketing Executive Study, Barbara Pellow, Patricia Sorce, Franziska Frey

For the past several years, many graphic arts industry analysts and market research firms have predicted that the growth of digital color and variable data is about to explode. So far, however, growth has failed to meet market expectations. Several hypotheses are associated with the subdued market growth. The following factors are most frequently cited: • Lack of a strong value proposition for digital color and personalization. Contributing to this is the relatively low incidence of documented ROI metrics for digital color or personalization for marketing materials. • Limited availability of accurate data for targeted or versioned marketing campaigns. If …

Investing In Digital Color...The Bottom Line, Barbara Pellow, Michael Pletka, Heather Banis
Books
The purpose of this research is to understand the investment requirements that digital color prospects will face in order to build a digital color business. Printers and prepress firms have been hearing that the cost of ownership is declining, but they need to understand that the business model reaches far beyond cost per page. Not only do digital color printers need to purchase equipment, maintenance support, and consumables, but they need to build the right infrastructure to deliver value-added digital color services to their customers. This research report will examine the various equipment, RIP, and software options print service providers have …

Demand For Customized Communications By Advertising Agencies And Marketing Executives, Patricia Sorce, Barbara Pellow
Books
Mass customization and one-to-one marketing strategies have greatly impacted business practices in the last decade. This has been true in advertising where marketers can effectively customize a message based on the nature of the receiver, deliver it in a cost-effective way, and obtain feedback regarding its effectiveness. The purpose of the present study by the Printing Industry Center (CIAS) at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is to benchmark the amount of personalization and complexity of personalized advertising in the U.S. Two distinct populations, advertising agencies and marketing executives, were sampled to measure their current usage patterns and their underlying …

The Advertising Agency's Role In Marketing Communication Demand Creation, Barbara Pellow, Patricia Sorce, Franziska Frey, Lauren Oslon
Books
Early adopters of digital color printing have consistently been told that they need to educate the advertising agency market to drive digital color print volume. Experience has yielded mixed results for digital color printers who have taken this approach. There have been several hypotheses suggested why agency education has had limited value, including: the price/value equation for digital color printing, limited availability of accurate data for targeted marketing campaigns, and relative lack of use of return on investment metrics for one-toone marketing. As part of the industry analysis effort for the digital color market, the Printing Industry Center at RIT …

Digital Integration And The Lean Manufacturing Practices Of U.S. Printing Firms, Frank Cost, Brett Daly
Books
The printing industry is in the midst of a transformation that can best be understood with reference to the metaphor of the “perfect storm.” Four forces—digitization, standardization, the rise of the Internet, and globalization leading to increased competition—have combined to create the storm. The storm is destroying many companies in its path. Other companies are learning how to ride through it and harness its awesome power to their best advantage. Technology can play a critical role in reducing the costs of business and manufacturing processes. But the acquisition of new technology in the absence of a disciplined approach to process …

An Investigation Into Printing Industry Demographics, Frank Romano, Marnie Soom
Books
What is the printing industry? The goal of this study is to define the printing industry universe. There are about a dozen major sources of information about the printing industry, only one of which is the Federal Government. Although printing is one of the most documented industries in the United States, each of these sources arrives at a different view for the size and scope of the industry. This report investigates the challenges in developing a meaningful set of criteria for defining and quantifying the printing industry. Using the criteria from 15 points of definition, a database of just under …
