Biological Control Of The Lily Leaf Beetle, Lilioceris Lilii In North America, Marion Secrest Gold Jan 2003

Biological Control Of The Lily Leaf Beetle, Lilioceris Lilii In North America, Marion Secrest Gold

Open Access Dissertations

The lily leaf beetle, Lilioceris lilii (Scopoli), first officially reported in the U.S. in 1992, has become a serious pest of native and cultivated lilies throughout its North American distribution. With no effective North American natural enemies, this exotic insect poses a potential economic threat to horticulturists and an environmental threat to native lilies. This study presents the results of an ongoing classical biological control program initiated against L. lilii in North America. Based on its Eurasian geographic distribution, L. lilii seems capable of spreading throughout much of North America. In Europe, the lily leaf beetle is well known but …

Conductimetric And Potentiometric Investigation Of Effects Of Solvents And Titrant On Formation Of Homoconjugates, Esi̇n Canel, Mustafa Taşteki̇n, Orhan Atakol, Esma Kiliç

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Trichloro-, tribromo- and trifluoro- acetic acids were both conductimetrically and potentiometrically titrated in acetonitrile and 2-propanol media. The titrations were carried out at 25°C under nitrogen atmosphere and titrants used were the solutions of triethyl, di-n-butyl and n-butyl amines prepared in the same solvents. Whether these acids gave a homoconjugation reaction during titration was investigated by the use of conductimetric and potentiometric titration curves. In acetonitrile media trichloro- and tribromo-acetic acids decomposed to give chloroform and carbon dioxide, and bromoform and carbon dioxide respectively. It was observed that the acid concentration and the type of titrant used had no effect …

Inhibition Studies Of A Few Organic Compounds And Their Condensation Products On The Corrosion Of Zinc In Hydrochloric Acid Medium, Shanthamma K. Rajappa, Thimmappa V. Venkatesha

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The corrosive behavior of zinc in HCl solution containing various concentrations of glutaraldehyde GTD, glycine GLN, methionine MTN, and their condensation products formed between GTD + GLN (CP1) and GTD + MTN (CP2) was investigated. The corrosion-inhibitive action of these compounds on zinc metal was studied using chemical and electrochemical methods. The results showed that the compound CP2 is the best inhibitor and that its inhibition efficiency reaches 92.56% at 10^{-2} M in 0.05 M acid concentration. As an inhibitor, CP2 was found to have a predominant cathodic effect and its adsorption was confirmed with the Temkin isotherm. The effect …

Application Of A Three-Stage Sequential Extraction Procedure For The Determination Of Extractable Metal Contents In Highway Soils, Şeri̇fe Tokalioğlu, Şenol Kartal, Gökhan Bi̇rol

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A sequential extraction procedure, a three-step protocol proposed by the Standards, Measurements and Testing programme (SM & T--formerly BCR) of the European Union, was applied to soil samples for the determination of metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn). This procedure provides measurements of extractable metals from media such as acetic acid (0.11 mol L^{-1}), hydroxylammonium chloride (0.1 mol L^{-1}) and hydrogen peroxide (8.8 mol L^{-1}) plus ammonium acetate (1 mol L^{ - 1}), which are exchangeable, reducible and oxidisable metals, respectively. Analyses were carried out using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The results obtained from …

Adsorption Of Arsenate And Chromate From Waters On Hydrophobized Zeolitic Media, Eva Chmielewska Jan 2003

Adsorption Of Arsenate And Chromate From Waters On Hydrophobized Zeolitic Media, Eva Chmielewska

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A laboratory setup was used to examine the uptake of chromate and arsenate from aqueous solutions by octadecylammonium acetate [ODA]-modified inland clinoptilolite. In trials, a natural variety of montmorillonite was compared to organic, i.e. surfactant loaded clinoptilolite. and some inorganically substituted (Ag, Pb) monoforms. The arrangement of the surface-attached ODA chains was the important factor for differences in the adsorption states of the guest species (oxyanions). A novel nano-structure inorganic-organic composite was prepared and was characterized by SEM, thermogravimetry, HR TEM, UV-VIS diffuse reflectance and powder XRD spectral analytical methods. Finally, the adsorption isotherms of the studied system were expressed. …

Caught In The Crossfire: A Defense Of The Cultural Theory Of Gun-Risk Perceptions, Donald Braman, Dan M. Kahan Jan 2003

Caught In The Crossfire: A Defense Of The Cultural Theory Of Gun-Risk Perceptions, Donald Braman, Dan M. Kahan

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

In this article, Dan Kahan and Donald Braman expand upon the cultural theory of gun-risk perception and respond to the commentaries on their previous article, More Statistics, Less Persuasion: A Cultural Theory of Gun-Risk Perceptions, 151 U. Pa. L. Rev. 1291 (2003). Their critics argue that the authors are too quick to dismiss the power of empirical information to influence individuals’ positions on gun control. But in analyzing the variety of their critics’ arguments, Kahan and Braman note the strange pattern of opinions that has emerged on the relative importance of culture and data in the gun debate. What could …

Commercial Purchasing: The Chasm Between The United States Government's Evolving Policy And Practice, Steven L. Schooner Jan 2003

Commercial Purchasing: The Chasm Between The United States Government's Evolving Policy And Practice, Steven L. Schooner

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

During the 1990's, the United States government accelerated its efforts to adopt more commercial practices and buy more commercial items. In doing so, the government sought to: (1) mimic the most successful buying practices of businesses and consumers and (2) rely more heavily upon existing goods and services already produced in the marketplace (rather than demanding creation of government-unique versions). This paper introduces the government's efforts to make its purchasing regime more commercial through the introduction of new policies, vocabulary, purchasing authorities, and practices. The paper unveils a host of impediments that restrain the government from evolving into a truly …

Perfecting Patent Prizes, Michael B. Abramowicz Jan 2003

Perfecting Patent Prizes, Michael B. Abramowicz

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

A number of commentators in recent years have suggested permitting holders of intellectual property rights to give up these rights in exchange for cash prizes from the government. In this Article, Professor Abramowicz shows that each of the proposals has significant flaws that would make implementation impractical and argues that no single perfect formula or algorithm for determining the size of prizes exists. A prize system is nonetheless worth pursuing because it could increase social welfare significantly by eliminating deadweight loss. Professor Abramowicz recommends a relatively simple approach that would complement rather than replace the patent system. The proposal is …

The Sarbanes-Oxley Yawn: Heavy Rhetoric, Light Reform (And It Might Just Work), Lawrence A. Cunningham Jan 2003

The Sarbanes-Oxley Yawn: Heavy Rhetoric, Light Reform (And It Might Just Work), Lawrence A. Cunningham

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

A thorough examination of the much ballyhooed Sarbanes-Oxley Act reveals dominantly a federal codification of extant rules, regulations, practices, and norms. Despite advertising it as "the most far-reaching reforms of American business practices since the time of FDR," a soberly apolitical view sees the Act as more sweep than reform. Important are provisions calling for nine studies; redundant but much publicized were the certification requirements imposed during the summer of 2002; other moves are mere patchwork responses to precise transgressions present in the popularized scandals. The Act is far from trivial, however. A silver bullet relates to the structure and …

Single-Cell Protein Profiling Of Wastewater Enterobacterial Communities Predicts Disinfection Efficiency, Gomathinayagam Ponniah, Han Chen, Ronda Michielutti, Nancy Salonen, Paul H. Blum Jan 2003

Single-Cell Protein Profiling Of Wastewater Enterobacterial Communities Predicts Disinfection Efficiency, Gomathinayagam Ponniah, Han Chen, Ronda Michielutti, Nancy Salonen, Paul H. Blum

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The efficiency of enterobacterial disinfection is dependent largely on enterobacterial community physiology. However, the relationship between enterobacterial community physiology and wastewater processing is unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate this relationship. The influence of wastewater treatment processes on enterobacterial community physiology was examined at the single-cell level by using cultureindependent methods. Intracellular concentrations of two conserved proteins, the growth-related protein Fis and the stationary-phase protein Dps, were analyzed by epifluoresence microscopy of uncultivated cells by using enterobacterial group-specific polyclonal fluorochrome-coupled antibodies. Enterobacterial single-cell community protein profiles were distinct for different types of biological treatment. The differences were …

Putative Subunits Of The Maize Origin Of Replication Recognition Complex Zmorc1±Zmorc5, Xiaohong Witmer, Raul Alvarez-Venegas, Phillip San-Miguel, Olga Danilevskaya, Zoya Avramova

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The finding in animal species of complexes homologous

to the products of six Saccharomyces cerevisiae

genes, origin of replication recognition

complex (ORC), has suggested that ORC-related

mechanisms have been conserved in all eukaryotes.

In plants, however, the only cloned putative homologs

of ORC subunits are the Arabidopsis ORC2 and

the rice ORC1. Homologs of other subunits of plant

origin have not been cloned and characterized. A

striking observation was the absence from the

Arabidopsis genome of an obvious candidate genehomolog

of ORC4. This fact raised compelling

questions of whether plants, in general, and

Arabidopsis, in particular, may have lost the …

Freedom Of Expression, Democratic Norms, And Internet Governance, Dawn C. Nunziato Jan 2003

Freedom Of Expression, Democratic Norms, And Internet Governance, Dawn C. Nunziato

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Within a decade, the Internet has transformed into a global medium of mass communication and expression of all kinds. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the body that governs the Internet's infrastructure, assured the United States that it would govern the Internet's infrastructure democratically and would implement governance structures to take into account the interests of affected Internet users around the world. In particular, ICANN promised to employ deliberative and representative democratic structures in its decision-making bodies. Even though ICANN has (arguably) implemented such procedural democratic norms, it has failed to implement substantive norms of democratic governance, …

The Origins And Growth Of Information Privacy Law, Daniel J. Solove Jan 2003

The Origins And Growth Of Information Privacy Law, Daniel J. Solove

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

In recent years, information privacy has emerged as one of the central issues of our times. Today, we have hundreds of laws pertaining to privacy - the common law torts, criminal law, evidentiary privileges, constitutional law, at least twenty federal statutes, and numerous statutes in each of the fifty states. To understand the law of information privacy more completely, it is necessary to look to its origins and growth. This article provides a brief overview of the history of the development of information privacy law. In particular, it explores the way that the law has emerged in response to changes …

The Virtues Of Knowing Less: Justifying Privacy Protections Against Disclosure, Daniel J. Solove Jan 2003

The Virtues Of Knowing Less: Justifying Privacy Protections Against Disclosure, Daniel J. Solove

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This Article develops justifications for protections against the disclosure of private information. An extensive body of scholarship has attacked such protections as anathema to the Information Age, where the free flow of information is championed as a fundamental value. This Article responds to two general critiques of disclosure protections: (1) that they inhibit freedom of speech, and (2) that they restrict information useful for judging others.

Regarding the free speech critique, the Article argues that not all speech is of equal value; speech of private concern is less valuable than speech of public concern. The difficulty, however, is distinguishing between …

An Exclusive Right To Evoke, Stacey Dogan Jan 2003

An Exclusive Right To Evoke, Stacey Dogan

Faculty Scholarship

Ten years ago, in White v. Samsung Electronics America, the Ninth Circuit held that a robot violated Vanna White's publicity rights. Since the White decision, the tendency to equate evocation with infringement in trademark and right of publicity cases has only grown. In contrast to this expansionist trend in trademark and right of publicity law, however, courts in recent copyright cases have arguably backed off from a strong right to evoke. This Article identifies these trends and suggests some reasons for concern over an exclusive right to evoke. The author argues that if we wish to preserve a rich commons …

Code Versus The Common Law, Stacey Dogan Jan 2003

Code Versus The Common Law, Stacey Dogan

Faculty Scholarship

The explosion of peer-to-peer file sharing has forced a reexamination of the essential structure of copyright law in the United States. In a digital, interconnected world, the dispersion of copying and distribution activities makes it more difficult for copyright holders to identify users who derive value from their works. And at least theoretically, the inability to capture such value could ultimately jeopardize the incentive to produce and distribute creative expression.

There is widespread disagreement over what, if anything, should be done about these threats. While suggestions range from copyright abandonment to digital lockup, two of the principal proposals share an …

Blinded By Bioterrorism: Public Health And Liberty In The 21st Century, George J. Annas Jan 2003

Blinded By Bioterrorism: Public Health And Liberty In The 21st Century, George J. Annas

Faculty Scholarship

In Blindness, Nobel Prize laureate Jos6 Saramago chronicles the quarantining of the first victims of a plague of blindness.1 We meet many people who become blind in Saramago's novel, including an opthamologist, a one-eyed man with an eye patch, and a man born blind. Saramago reminds us that we are all blind in one way or another, and that there are many things about ourselves and our society that we can't or won't see. The quarantine itself turns out to be isolating, inhumane, and degrading; the interred blind being portrayed by themselves and others as pigs, dogs, and "lame crabs." …

Unpatriotic Acts: An Introduction, Sadiq Reza Jan 2003

Unpatriotic Acts: An Introduction, Sadiq Reza

Faculty Scholarship

John Walker Lindh. Zacarias Moussaoui. Jose Padilla. Richard Reid. Who reading these lines does not instantly recognize the names of these men? Or at least their assigned noms de guerre: American Taliban, 20th hijacker, dirty bomber, shoe bomber. For two and a half years these names and others have flitted through our daily copies of The New York Times like shadow characters in a play, along with black-and-white photographs underneath which black-and-white text tells us of their alleged (and sometimes proven) wrongdoing and the latest developments in their tribulations (and sometimes trials) with our government. But the men themselves are …
