The Abcs And Beyond: Developing An Operations Research Agenda On Comprehensive Behavior Change Approaches For Hiv Prevention: Report From A Technical Meeting, Julie Pulerwitz, Johannes Van Dam, Natalie Phillips-Hamblett

HIV and AIDS

In April 2003, the Horizons Program sponsored a one-day technical meeting to develop and set priorities for an operations research agenda to study effective behavior change strategies for HIV risk reduction, particularly those that focus on the “ABC” behaviors: abstinence or delaying sex, being faithful or partner reduction, and condom use. Representatives from more than 20 organizations and programs involved in prevention research and programming discussed epidemiological, behavioral, psychosocial, and structural factors that may help determine the effectiveness of promoting the ABCs and other prevention programs. During the meeting, specific opportunities for collaborations and areas of particular interest for each …

Programme Recommendations For The Prevention Of Mother-To-Child Transmission Of Hiv: A Practical Guide For Managers, Naomi Rutenberg, Sam Kalibala, Carolyn Baek, James Rosen Jan 2003

Programme Recommendations For The Prevention Of Mother-To-Child Transmission Of Hiv: A Practical Guide For Managers, Naomi Rutenberg, Sam Kalibala, Carolyn Baek, James Rosen

HIV and AIDS

UNAIDS estimates that 800,000 children were infected with HIV in 2001, almost all through transmission of the virus from their mothers during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding. Of these, seven of each eight live in sub-Saharan Africa and most of the rest live in South and Southeast Asia. To combat mother-to-child transmission of HIV (MTCT), in 1999 the UNAIDS Secretariat, UNFPA, UNICEF, and WHO launched the Inter Agency Task Team on Prevention of HIV Transmission in Pregnant Women, Mothers, and Their Children (IATT), which provides guidance for prevention of MTCT (PMTCT). In the view of the IATT, PMTCT is part of …

Participation Accrue Des Personnes Vivant Avec Le Vih/Sida Aux Activités Des Ong De Lutte Contre Le Sida, Population Council

HIV and AIDS

The Role Of Ap-1 Transcription Complex In Retinoic Acid-Dependent B16 Melanoma Cell Growth Arrest And Differentiation, Ying Huang Jan 2003

The Role Of Ap-1 Transcription Complex In Retinoic Acid-Dependent B16 Melanoma Cell Growth Arrest And Differentiation, Ying Huang

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Our laboratory has been studying the effects of all-trans retinoic acid (atRA) on the growth and differentiation of the B16 mouse melanoma cells. RA inhibits both anchorage-dependent and –independent growth and stimulates melanin production in B16 cells, which are accompanied by an increase in AP-1 activity. To further investigate the RA-induced AP-1 activity, I established clones of B16 stably expressing an AP-1-luciferase reporter gene. Treatment of these clones with phorbol dibutyrate (PDB), a known activator of AP-1, rapidly increased AP-1 activity which reached its maximum level at 2-4 h and returned to baseline level by 24 h. In contrast, RA …

Covering Women And Violence: Media Treatment Of Vawa's Civil Rights Remedy, Sarah F. Russell Jan 2003

Covering Women And Violence: Media Treatment Of Vawa's Civil Rights Remedy, Sarah F. Russell

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

This Article analyzes how newspapers described and characterized the civil rights provision over the past decade and shaped the public discourse about the law. The author examines how lower federal courts, and eventually the Supreme Court, categorized the VAWA remedy when deciding whether Congress had acted within its commerce powers. After considering why there may have been resistance in the press and in the courts to VAWA's categorization of violence against women as a civil rights issue, the author concludes by examining the remedies that have been introduced at the state and local level for victims of gender-motivated violence, and …

Pr 703 Storytelling And Preaching, Charles D. Killian

Syllabi

The overall objectives of this course are that you will: • Grow in your ability to discover stories, write stories, and tell stories; • Draw upon the nature and dynamics of autobiography (oral history, journal) as a means of enhancing self-confidence and oral expression; • Appreciate and gain facility in using narrative imagination in the preaching process; • Grow in your awareness that while the kerygma of authentic preaching is centered on the Jesus Story, the storyteller is a person whose very humanity is essential to telling The Story.

The Ethics Of Service : A New Approach To Service Learning, Jonathan C. Zur Jan 2003

The Ethics Of Service : A New Approach To Service Learning, Jonathan C. Zur

Honors Theses

The new model of service presented in this paper gives a framework for considering the possibilities for ethically grounded service. It does not solve al I of the problems with competing interests or tradeoffs in wellbeing, but is a solid foundation upon which many important discussions can be based. By examining the continuum of self-interest, the discussion of intent, preparedness, and outcome, and consideration for mandatory service, the paper has offered a comprehensive assessment of the ethics of service. The four parties - the volunteer, the client, the university, and the service site - have particular responsibilities to their own …

The Ninth Circuit’S Invasion Of The Tort Of Invasion Of Privacy, Harvey L. Zuckman Jan 2003

The Ninth Circuit’S Invasion Of The Tort Of Invasion Of Privacy, Harvey L. Zuckman

Scholarly Articles

The tort of invasion of privacy has had a short but tortuous development made even more tortuous by a number of recent rulings by the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. This common law tort does not begin with the normal judicial iterations that created and sculpted other torts. Rather, it began life as a law review article prompted by personal pique.

Trading In Human Misery: A Human Rights Perspective On The Tampa Incident, Irene Khan Jan 2003

Trading In Human Misery: A Human Rights Perspective On The Tampa Incident, Irene Khan

Washington International Law Journal

The Tampa case does not stand in isolation. It is part of a wider pattern of restrictive asylum policies. To fully understand the significance of the Tampa case, one should go back more than two decades to the exodus of the Vietnamese boat people. Then, as now, boatloads of asylum seekers were pushed away, and refugees were detained on small islands, including, for example, Galang Island in Indonesia. Then, as now, many asylum seekers drowned as their calls of distress went unnoticed or unheeded. In response to this exodus, asylum, as a permanent solution to refugee problems, was diminished with …

The Failure Of Domestic And International Mechanisms To Redress The Harmful Effects Of Australian Immigration Detention, Adrienne D. Mcentee Jan 2003

The Failure Of Domestic And International Mechanisms To Redress The Harmful Effects Of Australian Immigration Detention, Adrienne D. Mcentee

Washington International Law Journal

Australia's Migration Act explicitly permits the government to detain non-citizens seeking entry without visas, including those who request asylum. Detainees wait up to five years for their immigration claims to be processed in detention centers managed by Australasian Correctional Management ("ACM"), a subsidiary of U.S. corporation Wackenhut Corrections. Arriving asylum-seekers often suffer the lasting effects of torture, threats of death, and other traumatic conditions-effects that are exacerbated by detention conditions. This Comment emphasizes detention's effects on children, who suffer health and other problems while detained. Detainees, Australian citizens, and overseas commentators are now protesting against the detention policy. The government's …

Is It The Beginning Of The Era Of The Rule Of The Constitution? Reinterpreting China's "First Constitutional Case, Shen Kui, Yuping Liu

Washington International Law Journal

The subject of this article is the so-called "first constitutional case" in China. The Qi Yuling case is, in a sense, the very first time since the foundation of the People's Republic of China that constitutional provisions have been directly invoked by the Supreme People's Court in a civil lawsuit to protect a citizen's right to receive education, one of the fundamental rights protected by the Constitution. The Qi Yuling case, therefore, has given rise to much discussion on issues of judicial interpretation of the Constitution and the Constitution's application in the private domain, as well as the institution of …
