Great Plains Workshop Held To Prepare For Usarray Deployment, Mary S. Hubbard, S. S. Gao, K. H. Liu, K. E. Nicolaysen, C. G. Oviatt

Geosciences Faculty Publications

Relative to most parts of North America, the Great Plains region, which is bordered by the Rocky Mountain Front on the west and the Mississippi River on the east, has been understudied in terms of the structure, formation, and evolution of the underlying crust, mantle, and core. The anticipated arrival of the USArray portable seismic stations, which will cover the entire United States regardless of surface geology and tectonic activities, and the deployment of the accompanying flexible array stations and the permanent seismic stations in this area, will fill this gap and address numerous problems related to the structure and …

Through A Bird’S Eye – Exploring Avian Sensory Perception, Robert C. Beason Aug 2003

Through A Bird’S Eye – Exploring Avian Sensory Perception, Robert C. Beason

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 5th (2003)

For too many birds their environment includes airfields and aircraft. Knowing avian sensory abilities, researchers can design experiments and develop new devices and techniques to deter birds from aircraft on and away from airfields. How birds perceive the world about them determines many choices, including foraging, predator avoidance, and flight. Most experiments to investigate the sensory abilities of birds have been developed and analyzed using only human sensory capabilities, which often differ markedly from those of birds. My objective is to review and synthesize what is known and what is unknown about avian sensory capabilities. Compared with humans, birds can …

Publications (YM)

Starting on October 1, 1995, the monitoring of seismicity within the southern Great Basin near Yucca Mountain was performed with a new digital network. This network features three-component recording with 24-bit A/D conversion in the field. Continuous data are collected at 20 sps, and event triggered windows are collected at 100 sps. A seismic bulletin of events is made by automatically associating triggers among stations, classifying the local earthquake events, and locating the earthquakes and computing their magnitudes with conventional methods. This report covers the operational and seismic results of the seventh year (FY02) of the digital network monitoring. The …

Saami Activism In The United Nations: An Analysis Of Effectiveness Internationally And At Home, Christian Jakob Hicks Aug 2003

Saami Activism In The United Nations: An Analysis Of Effectiveness Internationally And At Home, Christian Jakob Hicks

Arctic and Northern Studies

The Saami of Norway, Sweden, and Finland have been politically active internationally since the 1960s and 1970s. In the last fifteen years their presence has been a major force in indigenous politics and human rights. They have interacted with other indigenous groups, and in numerous national and international political arenas. The motivation for this study is based on the desire to understand the role of Nordic Saami actors in the rapidly changing world of international indigenous politics and how international indigenous politics influences national politics. This study is important to understanding not only Saami politics but also indigenous politics in …

Minimal K-Rankings And The A-Rank Number Of A Path, Victor Kostyuk, Darren Narayan, Victoria Shults Aug 2003

Minimal K-Rankings And The A-Rank Number Of A Path, Victor Kostyuk, Darren Narayan, Victoria Shults

Articles

Given a graph G, a function f: V(G) -> {1, 2, ..., k} is a k-ranking of G if f(u) = f(v) implies every u - v path contains a vertex w such that f(w) > f(u). A k-ranking is minimal if the reduction of any label greater than 1 violates the described ranking property. The a-rank number of G, denoted u,(G) equals the largest k such that G has a minimal k-ranking. We establish new results involving minimal rankings of paths and in particular we determine u(Pn), a problem suggested by Laskar and Pillone in 2000. We show u(Pn) = …

Laboratory Studies Of Gas Permeability Of Frozen Soil, Qing Lin Aug 2003

Laboratory Studies Of Gas Permeability Of Frozen Soil, Qing Lin

Theses (Unassigned)

A preliminary investigation on the gas permeability of frozen soil was conducted in this study. A unique low-temperature permeability testing system was designed and developed. Widely accepted standard procedures were followed to prepare soil samples. A number of experiments were conducted in a cold chamber with controlled temperature. The impact of several parameters upon the gas permeability of frozen soil was investigated. The experiment results indicated that among the parameters examined, moisture content had the most significant impact on the gas permeability of frozen soil and the effect of temperature was less significant than that of moisture content. It was …

Modeling Of Permafrost And Gas Hydrate Stability Zone Within Alaskan Arctic Shelves And Continental Margins, Sergei I. Pokrovsky Aug 2003

Modeling Of Permafrost And Gas Hydrate Stability Zone Within Alaskan Arctic Shelves And Continental Margins, Sergei I. Pokrovsky

Geosciences

A mathematical model was used to determine the behavior of the thermal regime and temperature and pressure conditions due to climate and sea level variations of the gas hydrate stability zone formation at four sites within the Alaskan Arctic Shelf. Two soil types, coarse-grained and fine-grained, and three types of programs were used. The programs were distinguished by whether or not they took unfrozen water and latent heat into account. Simulations suggest the presence of subsea permafrost in a vast area of shelf near Prudhoe Bay. Near Barrow and Lonely subsea permafrost extends up to several tens of kilometers offshore, …

Spectral Estimation Of Signal And Noise Power In Rayleigh Lidar Measurements Of The Middle Atmosphere, Weiyuan Wang Aug 2003

Spectral Estimation Of Signal And Noise Power In Rayleigh Lidar Measurements Of The Middle Atmosphere, Weiyuan Wang

Engineering

A Rayleigh lidar has been operated at Chatanika, Alaska (65°N, 147°W) since November 1997. The lidar observations yield temperature and density measurements in the stratosphere and mesosphere (40-80 km). This thesis presents a systematic engineering analysis of the retrieval methods used to determine both the temperature and density profiles as well as the density perturbations. Statistical and spectral analysis techniques are used to determine the total power in the density perturbations and estimate the power component due to geophysical variability and the power component due to instrumental noise. The power in the density perturbations is used to characterize the gravity-wave …

Estimation Of Operation Time For Soil Vapor Extraction Systems, Trevor C. White Aug 2003

Estimation Of Operation Time For Soil Vapor Extraction Systems, Trevor C. White

Engineering

Since the inception of Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) as a viable contaminated soil restoration strategy, operators of these systems have struggled with determining the best date to terminate operation of their systems. Using principles of soil-gas flow and mass transport through unsaturated soils, stochastic hydrogeology, uncertainty analysis, and a cost/risk decision model, a procedure that can determine the appropriate time to discontinue operation of SVE systems was developed. Modeling of physical characteristics and determination of mass removal of a SVE system was accomplished using statistical realizations of permeability (uncertainty model) and a 2D advective-dispersive finite element vapor transport program (VapourT). …

Seasonal Distribution Of Steller Sea Lions (Eumetopias Jubatus) In Relation To High-Quality Ephemeral Prey Species In Southeastern Alaska, Jamie Neil Womble Aug 2003

Seasonal Distribution Of Steller Sea Lions (Eumetopias Jubatus) In Relation To High-Quality Ephemeral Prey Species In Southeastern Alaska, Jamie Neil Womble

Fisheries

Energetic demands are high for sea lions during spring when females are pregnant and lactating and males are preparing for extended fasting during the breeding season. Therefore, I predicted that the distribution of sea lions in spring would be influenced by the distribution of spring-spawning aggregations of high-energy Pacific herring (Clupeapallasii) and eulachon (Thaleichthys pacificus) in southeastern Alaska. Monthly aerial surveys at 23 Steller sea lions haul outs revealed that haulout use was seasonally dynamic. Some sea lion haulouts were only occupied during spring. Other haulouts exhibited pronounced increases in the number of sea lions during certain seasons. Sea lion …

Secularism's Laws: State Blaine Amendments And Religious Persecution, Kyle Duncan Aug 2003

Secularism's Laws: State Blaine Amendments And Religious Persecution, Kyle Duncan

ExpressO

The State Blaine Amendments are provisions in thirty-seven state constitutions that restrict persons’ and organizations’ access to public benefits on religious grounds. They arose largely in the mid- to late-1800s in response to bitter strife between an established Protestant majority and a growing Catholic minority that sought equal access to public funding for Catholic schools. After the failure to pass a federal constitutional amendment—the "Blaine Amendment"—that would have sealed off public school funds from "sectarian" institutions, similar provisions proliferated in state constitutions. These "State Blaines" have often been interpreted, under their plain terms, as erecting religion-sensitive barriers to the flow …

Takings Formalism And Regulatory Formulas: Exactions And The Consequences Of Clarity, Mark Fenster Aug 2003

Takings Formalism And Regulatory Formulas: Exactions And The Consequences Of Clarity, Mark Fenster

ExpressO

A vocal minority of the U.S. Supreme Court recently announced its suspicion that lower courts and state and local administrative agencies are systematically ignoring constitutional rules intended to limit, through heightened judicial review, exactions as a land use regulatory tool. Exactions are the concessions local governments require of property owners as conditions for the issuance of the entitlements that enable the intensified use of real property. In two cases decided over the past two decades, Nollan v. California Coastal Commission (1987) and Dolan v. City of Tigard (1994), the Court has established under the Takings Clause a logic and metrics …
