Context-Aware Semantic Association Ranking, Boanerges Aleman-Meza, Chris Halaschek, I. Budak Arpinar, Amit P. Sheth Aug 2003

Context-Aware Semantic Association Ranking, Boanerges Aleman-Meza, Chris Halaschek, I. Budak Arpinar, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Discovering complex and meaningful relationships, which we call Semantic Associations, is an important challenge. Just as ranking of documents is a critical component of today's search engines, ranking of relationships will be essential in tomorrow's semantic search engines that would support discovery and mining of the Semantic Web. Building upon our recent work on specifying types of Semantic Associations in RDF graphs, which are possible to create through semantic metadata extraction and annotation, we discuss a framework where ranking techniques can be used to identify more interesting and more relevant Semantic Associations. Our techniques utilize alternative ways of specifying the …

A Content Analysis Of The Portrayal Of Men In Advertising: Gentlemen's Quarterly 1985-2000, Maryrose Mason

Theses

This thesis examines images of men and the products they promote in Gentleman 's Quarterly (GQ) magazine using the symbolic interaction theory of gender display developed by Erving Goffman in his monograph Gender Advertisements (1979). The study examines advertising images for evidence of sexual objectification of men, and reports on the extent different product types use gender displays to attract a male target market. 332 advertising images appearing in GQ from 1985 to 2000 were coded in ten categories of ritual display: setting, image position, image dominance, skin exposure, body portrayal, self-touch, gaze, and product type. The study concludes that …

A Study Of Radiofrequency Cardiac Ablation Using Analytical And Numerical Techniques, Ryan Todd Roper Aug 2003

A Study Of Radiofrequency Cardiac Ablation Using Analytical And Numerical Techniques, Ryan Todd Roper

Theses and Dissertations

Studies on radiofrequency (RF) ablation are often aimed at accurately predicting tissue temperature distributions by numerical solution of the bioheat equation. This thesis describes the development of an analytical solution to serve as a benchmark for subsequent numerical solutions. The solution, which was obtained using integral transforms, has the form of a surface integral nested within another surface integral. An integration routine capable of evaluating such integrals was developed and a C program was written to implement this routine. The surface integration routine was validated using a surface integral with a known analytical solution. The routine was, then, used to …

Monitoring Immediate-Early Gene Expression Through Firefly Luciferase Imaging Of Hrs/J Hairless Mice, Michael E. Geusz, Anne M. Collaco Aug 2003

Monitoring Immediate-Early Gene Expression Through Firefly Luciferase Imaging Of Hrs/J Hairless Mice, Michael E. Geusz, Anne M. Collaco

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Gene promoters fused to the firefly luciferase gene (luc) are useful for examining gene regulation in live transgenic mice and they provide unique views of functioning organs. The dynamics of gene expression in cells and tissues expressing luciferase can be observed by imaging this enzyme's bioluminescent oxidation of luciferin. Neural pathways involved in specific behaviors have been identified by localizing expression of immediate-early genes such as c-fos. A transgenic mouse line with luc controlled by the human c-fos promoter (fos::luc) has enabled gene expression imaging in brain slice cultures. To optimize imaging of immediate-early gene expression throughout intact mice, …

Manufacturer Liability For Harms Caused By Consumers To Others, Bruce L. Hay, Kathryn E. Spier Aug 2003

Manufacturer Liability For Harms Caused By Consumers To Others, Bruce L. Hay, Kathryn E. Spier

Law and Economics Papers

This paper investigates whether manufacturers should be liable if consumers, through the use of a product, cause harm to others. If consumers have deep pockets then consumer-only liability is socially desirable. With consumer insolvency, however, consumer-only liability leads to inadequate consumer precautions, inadequate safety features, and excessive economic activity. With homogeneous insolvent consumers, the best rule is "residual-manufacturer liability" where the consumer bears primary responsibility and the manufacturer bears the shortfall in damages. When consumers' willingness-to-pay is correlated with social harm they cause then residual-manufacturer liability distorts the market quantity. When consumers differ in their wealth then residual-manufacturer liability creates …
