Proceedings Of The 2003 Onr Decision-Support Workshop Series: Developing The New Infostructure, Collaborative Agent Design Research Center

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

In August of 1998 the Collaborative Agent Design Research Center (CADRC) of the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly), approached Dr. Phillip Abraham of the Office of Naval Research (ONR) with the proposal for an annual workshop focusing on emerging concepts in decision-support systems for military applications. The proposal was considered timely by the ONR Logistics Program Office for at least two reasons. First, rapid advances in information systems technology over the past decade had produced distributed, collaborative computer-assistance capabilities with profound potential for providing meaningful support to military decision makers. Indeed, some systems based on …

In 2000, 1 became the educational program director for Half the Sky Foundation. Half the Sky Foundation was organized by a group of American parents, led by Jenny Bowen, who had adopted Chinese orphans from Chinese Social Welfare Institutions. After seeing their own daughters become happy and healthy in a warm and stimulating environment in the United States, these parents wanted to give something back to the children (predominately girls) who still remained in the institutions in China. Therefore, an educational program called the Little Sisters Program was developed, integrating Reggio Emilia principles, Chinese early childhood practice, and North American …

A Neuronal-Specific Differentiation Protein That Directly Modulates Retinoid Receptor Transcriptional Activation, Kenneth W. Henry Ii, Michael L. Spencer, Maria Theodosiou, Dingyuan Lou, Daniel J. Noonan

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: The specificity of a nuclear receptor's ability to modulate gene expression resides in its ability to bind a specific lipophilic ligand, associate with specific dimerization partners and bind specific DNA sequences in the promoter regions of genes. This sequence of events appears to be the basis for targeting an additional regulatory complex composed of a variety of protein and RNA components that deliver signals for facilitation or inhibition of the RNA polymerase complex. Characterization of the tissue and cell-specific components of these coregulatory complexes appear to be integral to our understanding of nuclear receptor regulation of transcription.

Beyond Dilution: Toward A Coherent Theory Of The Anti Free Rider Impulse In American Trademark Law, David J. Franklyn Sep 2003

Beyond Dilution: Toward A Coherent Theory Of The Anti Free Rider Impulse In American Trademark Law, David J. Franklyn

ExpressO

This article argues for a fundamental shift in the way famous trademarks are protected under American trademark law. Currently, famous marks are protected by dilution law, which purports to prevent a particular kind of harm (i.e., the gradual whittling away of the commercial magnetism of a famous mark). The article argues that this is the wrong focus of famous mark protection, because dilution is an illusory concept; it either does not exist, or it is so difficult to prove, that it is an ineffective and misleading doctrinal tool. The article contends that American trademark law should move from the harm-based …
