Surface Aided Polarization Reversal In Small Ferroelectric Particles, Khian Hooi Chew, H.L.W. Chan, J. Osman, R.L. Stamps, D.R. Tilley, F.G. Shin Jan 2003

Surface Aided Polarization Reversal In Small Ferroelectric Particles, Khian Hooi Chew, H.L.W. Chan, J. Osman, R.L. Stamps, D.R. Tilley, F.G. Shin

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

Polarization reversal in ferroelectric particles driven by a pulsed electric field is examined theoretically using Landau-Devonshire-Khalatnikov theory. A significant reduction in reversal times is shown to be possible if certain surface properties and size criteria are met. The surface properties are also shown to control the magnitude of the applied field needed for irreversible switching. An interesting signature of surface effects is found in the switching current. The theory predicts that the switching current for small ferroelectric particles can exhibit double peaks as a function of time. The size and relative times of the peaks provide specific information on the …

Rockfall Modeling In Jointed Rock For Underground Openings With Consideration Of Seismic And Thermal Effect, Ming Lin Jan 2003

Rockfall Modeling In Jointed Rock For Underground Openings With Consideration Of Seismic And Thermal Effect, Ming Lin

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A rockfall model for underground excavation in the jointed rock is developed using the three-dimensional discontinuum code, 3DEC. The factors considered in this model include the stochastic attribute of the joint network, the joint mechanical properties, the seismic loading, and the thermal loaDing The Yucca Mountain site data were compiled and analyzed to feed into the numerical model. The 3DEC rockfall model incorporates the development of joint patterns generated from multiple sampling from a synthetic rock mass volume that contains a realistic joint population based on field mapping data. Site-specific ground motions and waste generated heat load are included in …

The Effect Of Video Instruction On Social Interactions Of Children In The Inclusive Preschool, Catherine Doyle Lyons Jan 2003

The Effect Of Video Instruction On Social Interactions Of Children In The Inclusive Preschool, Catherine Doyle Lyons

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Social competence is an important consideration for early childhood education. Furthermore, young children with disabilities are increasingly being placed in community preschool programs therefore necessitating strategies to increase the number and quality of social interactions between young children with and without disabilities. Beginning at a very young age nearly all children have access to television, VCR or DVD, and cable or satellite. Therefore, media may serve as a vehicle to increase the number and quality of social interactions between young children with and without disabilities; This study had two purposes. The first was to investigate the effect of scripted video …

The Digital Music Dilemma: Protecting Copyright In The Age Of Peer-To-Peer File Sharing, Natalie Koss Jan 2003

The Digital Music Dilemma: Protecting Copyright In The Age Of Peer-To-Peer File Sharing, Natalie Koss

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

This paper seeks a resolution between the need to eliminate copyright infringement and the desire to encourage new technology. This paper will suggest that the music industry would be better off directing resources toward solutions such as compulsory licensing, royalty collection, and working with hardware manufacturers to discourage copyright infringement. These solutions would allow the industry to take advantage of file sharing now rather than expending resources in court where the desired result of ending P2P programs may never come.

Plagiarism And Its (Disciplinary) Discontents: Towards An Interdisciplinary Theory And Pedagogy, Lisa Maruca Jan 2003

Plagiarism And Its (Disciplinary) Discontents: Towards An Interdisciplinary Theory And Pedagogy, Lisa Maruca

English Faculty Research Publications

Despite the abundance of literature on the topic, there is very little that can be called “common” about our common sense understanding of plagiarism. Taking a closer look at the history, rhetorical uses, and cultural practices of plagiarism, this essay reveals that this concept is multiple and heterogeneous, riddled with contradictions and blind spots. As a result, the article argues the overlapping, inter-related, yet distinct discourses of plagiarism that circulate within the academy can be usefully described as a “complex system.” In positing plagiarism as a complex system, this article has several goals. First, it shows how singular approaches to …

An Assessment Of Distance Learning Delivery Methodologies And The Proposal Of An Open Distance Learning Delivery Model For A Third Level Course In Sports Development, Deirdre Kiely Jan 2003

An Assessment Of Distance Learning Delivery Methodologies And The Proposal Of An Open Distance Learning Delivery Model For A Third Level Course In Sports Development, Deirdre Kiely

Theses

In the development of a distance learning curriculum the appropriate choice of media, in terms of both presentation of course materials, and of the approach to providing tutorial and other support, is a key question that needs to be addressed at the outset. However, very few studies provide guidelines for distance learning facilitators to help them in choosing these delivery methods. This study aimed to propose an Open Distance Learning (ODL) delivery model for a third level course in Sports Development and in doing so identifies a number of criteria which may be used by institutes when deciding on their …

Brand Development By Small Firms, Aoife Hackett Jan 2003

Brand Development By Small Firms, Aoife Hackett

Theses

The thesis explores the process of developing and managing brands. Particular emphasis is placed on how small enterprises gain recognition and acceptance for brands, the obstacles they encounter and how they surmount these obstacles.

In a review of the literature, brand management strategies and the value of brand loyalty to a business were discussed. Brand equity and measurement and measures of brand equity were also reviewed.

Interviews were conducted with large successful firms to discover arrangements and processes they employ to maintain market support, to extend the coverage or application of their brands to new product versions or new segments, …

It Is Not So Simply Because An Expert Says It Is So: The Reliability Of Gang Expert Testimony Regarding Membership In Criminal Street Gangs: Pushing The Limits Of Texas Rule Of Evidence 702., Placido G. Gomez Jan 2003

It Is Not So Simply Because An Expert Says It Is So: The Reliability Of Gang Expert Testimony Regarding Membership In Criminal Street Gangs: Pushing The Limits Of Texas Rule Of Evidence 702., Placido G. Gomez

St. Mary's Law Journal

The mechanisms developed by the criminal justice system addressing the criminal activities of street gangs, for the most part, have proved ineffective. The evolution of gangs, their complex structure, and multipurpose focus keep them one step ahead of law enforcement. The most recent weapon created to fight the war on gangs, the civil injunction, suffers from numerous inadequacies. One concern is that civil injunctions raise numerous constitutional concerns. Another is that these injunctions fall short of constitutional demands. Furthermore, the practical implementation of the injunction forces an analysis of the reliability of the gang expert’s testimony. This Article proposes courts …

Reporting Behind A Shield: The Growth Of Missouri's Fair Report Privilege To Defame - Kenney V. Scripps Howard Broadcasting Co., Steve J. Jasper Jan 2003

Reporting Behind A Shield: The Growth Of Missouri's Fair Report Privilege To Defame - Kenney V. Scripps Howard Broadcasting Co., Steve J. Jasper

Missouri Law Review

The law of defamation has evolved along a curious path. It is caught in the middle of a legal tug-of-war between the freedom of speech guaranteed by the First Amendment and each state’s interest in allowing its citizens to protect their reputations from being dragged through the mud. The Supreme Court of the United States and State of Missouri continue their efforts to strike a proper balance between these interests by tinkering with the element required for defamation claim and by creating privileges that prevent defamation liability. One of Missouri’s attempts to strike this proper balance is found in its …

Commercial Purchasing: The Chasm Between The United States Government's Evolving Policy And Practice, Steven L. Schooner Jan 2003

Commercial Purchasing: The Chasm Between The United States Government's Evolving Policy And Practice, Steven L. Schooner

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

During the 1990's, the United States government accelerated its efforts to adopt more commercial practices and buy more commercial items. In doing so, the government sought to: (1) mimic the most successful buying practices of businesses and consumers and (2) rely more heavily upon existing goods and services already produced in the marketplace (rather than demanding creation of government-unique versions). This paper introduces the government's efforts to make its purchasing regime more commercial through the introduction of new policies, vocabulary, purchasing authorities, and practices. The paper unveils a host of impediments that restrain the government from evolving into a truly …

Perfecting Patent Prizes, Michael B. Abramowicz Jan 2003

Perfecting Patent Prizes, Michael B. Abramowicz

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

A number of commentators in recent years have suggested permitting holders of intellectual property rights to give up these rights in exchange for cash prizes from the government. In this Article, Professor Abramowicz shows that each of the proposals has significant flaws that would make implementation impractical and argues that no single perfect formula or algorithm for determining the size of prizes exists. A prize system is nonetheless worth pursuing because it could increase social welfare significantly by eliminating deadweight loss. Professor Abramowicz recommends a relatively simple approach that would complement rather than replace the patent system. The proposal is …

Freedom Of Expression, Democratic Norms, And Internet Governance, Dawn C. Nunziato Jan 2003

Freedom Of Expression, Democratic Norms, And Internet Governance, Dawn C. Nunziato

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Within a decade, the Internet has transformed into a global medium of mass communication and expression of all kinds. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the body that governs the Internet's infrastructure, assured the United States that it would govern the Internet's infrastructure democratically and would implement governance structures to take into account the interests of affected Internet users around the world. In particular, ICANN promised to employ deliberative and representative democratic structures in its decision-making bodies. Even though ICANN has (arguably) implemented such procedural democratic norms, it has failed to implement substantive norms of democratic governance, …
