A Second Chance For Struggling Students, Irene R. Fujii

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The focus on standards and the California high school exit exam has had an impact on all students, especially students who are already having a difficult time in school. For the past 3-year period, 1999 through 2002, students from a bay area continuation high school had a retention rate of less than 25% in career technical programs.

The purpose of this study was to determine if the Skills Tutor Program (Achievement Technologies, 2000), a computerized instructional program, would assist continuation students to stay in school by helping them to enhance their academic performance and attitudes toward school.

The population for …

Leadership Development Program Emphasizing Accessibility, Accountability, And Responsibility Through A Training Component For Faculty, Clair D. Hart

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation was designed to evaluate a student character development program. Also addressed was how teachers could ally this module. Education can be viewed as a puzzle. A piece of the puzzle that is missing bridges the gap between academia, work, and adulthood. Many students are ill prepared for the transition from high school to the real world. The leap from public education to adulthood has become a struggle. Students believe they are ready to take on the world, but the world has been taking on the students for a much longer time. Teachers need to assist students in …

Reward: An Incentive Program To Encourage Appropriate Behavior And Reduce Discipline Referrals, Clyde O. Harris

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation was designed to reduce discipline referrals and suspensions in a middle school of 450 students. Universities provided the majority of the current material in terms of books, periodicals, relevant abstracts, and up-to-date research articles. The Internet was a useful tool as well as Educational Resources Information Center searches to locate information that provided both the pros and cons of using incentives to modify behavior. The school media center had very limited resources. Teachers at the school were given strategies to be used in the classroom to help them manage the classroom better, provide incentives in a timely …

Improving The Behavior Of Primary School Students With Involvement From Students, Staff, And Families, Judith Spieth Justice Jan 2003

Improving The Behavior Of Primary School Students With Involvement From Students, Staff, And Families, Judith Spieth Justice

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation was designed to provide better behavior from primary-aged (grades kindergarten through grade 3) school students. Primary aged students were exhibiting disruptive behavior, and this research delved into the evidence, causes, and solutions for disruptive behavior. Disruptive behavior interrupted the learning environment and threatened the physical and emotional safety of the school. Students who behaved inappropriately often perceived themselves as "troublemakers" and established a pattern early in school years. Because it is easier to eliminate problem behaviors before they become a pattern, the writer sought to break the cycle of disruptive behavior in primary ages.

The writer developed …

Increasing Enrollment At Community Christian School, Thomas R. Lamborn Jan 2003

Increasing Enrollment At Community Christian School, Thomas R. Lamborn

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This report describes a program to increase enrollment at Community Christian School (CCS). For the years 2000-2002, enrollment declined from a high of 243 to 200 students. As part of the problem, the faculty turnover was high, creating instability with the staff and concern on the part of parents. CCS had a faculty turnover rate of 48% and 45% for the same 2 years. Other possible causes included insufficient marketing of the school, weak instruction in the high school, low faculty salaries, and insufficient interaction between the administrators and the faculty.

A more definitive marketing plan was developed to be …

To effect change, the writer implemented a school operated afterschool program using building-level staff for program personnel. The program included opportunities for children to complete homework with assistance and to participate in enrichment opportunities. Procedures were established to provide a safe …

Development Of Strategies To Increase The Enrollment And Retention Of Female Engineering Honor Students At Purdue University With A Plan For Evaluation And Implementation, Gayle E. Hartleroad

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The Purdue University Schools of Engineering committee, charged with development of a new strategic plan, set a recruitment and retention goal to “. . . increase the percentage of women undergraduates in engineering to 30 percent” (Purdue University Schools of Engineering Compton Committee, 2002).

A ten-year decline in female enrollment at Purdue University’s Schools of Engineering became a topic of true concern, especially to the Freshman Engineering Honors Program. This enrollment decline is exceedingly problematic because the Schools of Engineering has had a reputation of graduating a nationally known, large population of female engineers. The previously noted goal of 30% …

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The department of health and exercise science at Camden County College (CCC) offers certificate, and degree programs. The degree program is its largest. The problem is that the curriculum in this program has not evolved to keep pace with advances in the field. This has led to a disconnect between the four-year institution program offerings in this field, and the program offerings at CCC, a trend of declining enrollments, and the loss of credits upon transfer by students in the degree program.

As a response to this problem, a sport management option to the curriculum was developed, along with a …

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation is a historical case study targeted at the segment of a high school population who are eligible for free or reduced price meal benefits but do not take advantage of these benefits. Low math achievement was documented on the Grade 8 math assessment of the New York State Testing Program for 1998-2001. Possible causes include poor alignment of the curriculum to the state learning standards and the state testing program in math. In addition, professional development on topics of math reform needed to be made available to middle school math teachers.

Toward A Multiple Party Representation Model: Moderating Power Disparity, Henry Ordower Jan 2003

Toward A Multiple Party Representation Model: Moderating Power Disparity, Henry Ordower

All Faculty Scholarship

Argues that the zealous representation model of contemporary legal practice with its emphasis on primacy of the client causes lawyers to assist and motivate their clients to exploit the clients' power advantages in non-litigation contexts. The article recommends that ethical rules shift to a multiple client representation model. The model would be based upon the Brandeisian "lawyer for the situation" and would empower attorneys in non-litigation settings to consider and evaluate the impact of their activities on other constituencies that the representation affects. Attorneys would become better able to encourage their clients to seek distributional fairness and balance in their …
