Scaffolding Transfer Activities Through The Use Of Concept Maps To Enhance Adaptive Problem Solving, James Jay Houdeshell

The use of concept mapping following the Schwartz and Bransford (1998) protocols were tested as a scaffolding intervention with ill- and moderately well-structured transfer activities to determine the impact on transferring those skills to the solution of new problems. This study included three faculty members, six course sections, and a total of 55 students conducted at a large midwestern community college. All students completed well-structured pretest and posttests that measured their declarative, structural, and procedural knowledge skills in basic statistics and problem solving tools. The objective of this study was to find a means of increasing math achievement in the middle school grade levels of the City School District of Albany. Low math achievement was documented on the Grade 8 math assessment of the New York State Testing Program for 1998-2001. Possible causes include poor alignment of the curriculum to the state learning standards and the state testing program in math. In addition, professional development on topics of math reform needed to be made available to middle school math teachers.

The purpose of this applied dissertation was to develop a plan for a quick response process to provide timely adult education and training to meet the requirements of business and industry. The plan was developed to ensure that the principles and practices of adult education were included to enhance quality training.

There was no direct linkage at Germanna Community College between adult workforce training and the training requirements of business and industry. Evidence of this need came from two sources. The program was intended to help reduce the failure rate of English for Students of Other Languages (ESOL) III and IV students in the middle school, mainstreamed classroom. The objectives for the program were to provide both ESOL levels III and IV students and their teachers with the strategies found in the available literature that had shown to be effective.

The arrival of Internet use in today’s classrooms has moved the learning environment beyond the drill and practice use of computers. The creation of a web-based curriculum enables students to have access to the global network of multimedia information while being engaged in self-directed learning activities. This study investigated whether infusing web-based computer technology into the global history curriculum could increase the percentage of students achieving mastery level and increase student interest and motivation in schoolwork.
