Getting Stuck Between Bottom And Top: State Competition For Corporate Charters In The Presence Of Network Effects, Brett H. Mcdonnell Jan 2003

Getting Stuck Between Bottom And Top: State Competition For Corporate Charters In The Presence Of Network Effects, Brett H. Mcdonnell

Hofstra Law Review

For decades, American legal scholars have debated over the implications of allowing corporations to choose in which state they will incorporate, irrespective of where they do business. Until recently the debate has centered almost exclusively on whether the managers who choose where to incorporate have incentive to choose a state whose laws favor managers to the disadvantage of shareholders (the "race to the bottom" thesis) or whether their incentives are to choose states whose laws treat shareholders properly (the "race to the top" thesis). Recently, some scholars have questioned whether the state charter competition process will necessarily lead to an …

Market Based Approaches To Environmental Preservation: To Environmental Mitigation Fees And Beyond, James C. Nicholas, Julian C. Juergensmeyer Jan 2003

Market Based Approaches To Environmental Preservation: To Environmental Mitigation Fees And Beyond, James C. Nicholas, Julian C. Juergensmeyer

Faculty Publications By Year

Impact fees are widely accepted and utilized across the United States as a technique to generate revenue for capital infrastructure improvements necessitated by new development. This article looks at the origination of impact fees, their legal framework, the extension of the concept towards environmental protection, and an alternative economic approach in environmental protection, “market based regulation.” Based upon techniques utilized primarily in the arenas of wetlands and air quality regulation, a concept of utilizing economic incentives for broader environmental protection is explored. Considerations of the legal framework evolved through impacts fees are then applied to possible implementation aspects of the …

Poetry For Teaching Elementary Mathematics Topics, Audrey C. Rule, J. Kagan Jan 2003

Poetry For Teaching Elementary Mathematics Topics, Audrey C. Rule, J. Kagan

Open Educational Resources

Sixty poems focusing on elementary mathematics topics such as matching, classification, sequencing, counting, addition, subtraction, place value, decimals, multiplication, division, fractions, estimation, probability, patterns, shapes, symmetry, triangles, circles, polygons, angles, Venn diagrams, bar graphs, money, time, and measurement, are presented in this document. Poems display a variety of formats including acrostic, haiku, limerick, and rhyming verse. Each contains mathematical facts about the topic. Preservice teachers enrolled in .a mathematics education course wrote the majority of poems. Poems may be used in a enrich elementary student learning and as models for other preservice teachers who may use poetry writing to review, …

Environmental Print Activities For Teaching Mathematics And Content Areas, Audrey C. Rule, S. Mcintyre, M. J. Ranous Jan 2003

Environmental Print Activities For Teaching Mathematics And Content Areas, Audrey C. Rule, S. Mcintyre, M. J. Ranous

Open Educational Resources

Twenty-three mathematics activities that use environmental print materials are presented, along with two activities that focus on music education, one that highlights history concepts, and five science activities. The environmental print materials are words and images cut from food or other product packaging and mounted on mat board cards. Instructions for teachers regarding material preparation are given, along with directions for students to engage in each activity. Example layouts and labels for materials boxes are given for each activity. Mathematical topics include: more and less; numeration; addition and subtraction; time words; forming patterns; writing equations; story problems; chart coordinates; percents; …

Activities For Differentiated Instruction Addressing All Levels Of Bloom's Taxonomy And Eight Multiple Intelligences, Audrey C. Rule, L. H. Lord Jan 2003

Activities For Differentiated Instruction Addressing All Levels Of Bloom's Taxonomy And Eight Multiple Intelligences, Audrey C. Rule, L. H. Lord

Open Educational Resources

This manuscript contains 13 curriculum units designed to enhance differentiated instruction for learners with special needs from grades 1-12, including gifted students. It integrates Benjamin S. Bloom's levels of cognitive understanding with Howard Gardner's eight domains of intelligence to provide a framework for individualized instruction. Each unit has activities for the eight multiple intelligences (logical-mathematical intelligence, linguistic intelligence, bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, spatial intelligence, musical intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, intrapersonal intelligence, and naturalistic intelligence) at each of Bloom's taxonomic levels: knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. The manuscript begins by explaining Bloom's and Gardner's contributions to educational research in the area of …

Effects Of Solution Elicitation Aids And Need For Cognition On The Generation Of Solutions To Ill-Structured Problems, Adam B. Butler, Lisa L. Scherer, Roni Reiter-Palmon Jan 2003

Effects Of Solution Elicitation Aids And Need For Cognition On The Generation Of Solutions To Ill-Structured Problems, Adam B. Butler, Lisa L. Scherer, Roni Reiter-Palmon

Psychology Faculty Publications

Numerous techniques have been proposed to assist problem solvers in the solution generation process. We empirically examined the effectiveness of a solution elicitation technique based on the presentation of problem objectives and also examined whether the technique was effective across individual differences in need for cognition (NC). We found that when two conflicting objectives were presented successively, more solutions, more categories of solutions, and more effective solutions were generated than when the same two objectives were presented simultaneously or not at all. However, the results indicated that effective solutions may be more efficiently generated by considering objectives simultaneously. Need for …

Assessing The Paleoclimatic Utility Of The Indo-Pacific Coral Genus Diploastrea In A 225-Year Oxygen Isotope Record From Fiji, Stefan Bagnato Jan 2003

Assessing The Paleoclimatic Utility Of The Indo-Pacific Coral Genus Diploastrea In A 225-Year Oxygen Isotope Record From Fiji, Stefan Bagnato

Geology Theses and Dissertations

In the Western Pacific there remains, both spatially and temporally, a sparse record of surface ocean conditions and very few long paleoclimate records able to extend our understanding of this important region. The coral genus Porites is the common coral currently used for Pacific paleoclimate studies and has proven to be very useful. The massive coral Diploastrea, due to its slow growth rate and dense structure, may preserve temporally longer geochemical proxy records than Porites colonies of the same length. Its long lifespan and fossil history give this genus great potential; however no assessment has been made of the paleoclimatic …

This paper has been written in order to teach the reader about a new programming language by NVidia called Cg. The author, an undergraduate computer science student at Bridgewater College, is still at a beginner's level of programming in Cg and relies heavily on a book called "The Cg Tutorial" (Fernando). However, the following paper will give excellent insight into the history, usability and programming functionality of the Cg language with background information on the history of Computer Graphics.

Bismuth Compounds In Organic Synthesis. Synthesis Of Resorcinarenes Using Bismuth Triflate, Ram Mohan, Katherine Peterson, Russell Smith Jan 2003

Bismuth Compounds In Organic Synthesis. Synthesis Of Resorcinarenes Using Bismuth Triflate, Ram Mohan, Katherine Peterson, Russell Smith

Scholarship

Bismuth triflate (5 mol%) smoothly catalyzes the condensation of aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes with resorcinol to give tetrameric cyclic products, resorcinarenes. With benzaldehyde, the product is obtained as a mixture of two diastereomers and the ratio of the diastereomers depends on reaction time. On the other hand, a single diastereomer is obtained with aliphatic aldehydes. The low toxicity and ease of handling of bismuth compounds coupled with fast reaction times make this method an attractive alternative to the existing methods for resorcinarene formation
