An Exploratory Examination Of The Relationship Between Motivational Factors And The Degree To Which The Higher Education Faculty Integrate Computer -Mediated Communication (Cmc) Tools Into Their Courses., Francis Ndwiga Murage
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The stated research problem of this study was to examine the relationship between motivational factors and the degree to which the higher education faculty integrate CMC tools into their courses. The study population and sample involved higher education faculty teaching in science departments at one public university and three public colleges in the state of West Virginia (N = 153). A Likert-type rating scale survey was used to collect data based on the research questions. Two parts of the survey were adopted from previous studies while the other two were self-constructed. Research questions and hypothesis were analyzed using both descriptive …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to determine if a significant relationship exists between teachers' perceptions of school climate and their principals' emotional intelligence competencies. The CFK Ltd. School Climate Profile was used to assess teachers' perceptions of school climate. Principals' emotional intelligence competencies were measured by the BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i). Teachers and principals were all employees of the Kanawha County School System in West Virginia. The entire population of principals (N = 68) and the entire population of school-based classroom teachers (N = 2081) were provided surveys. One hundred percent of the principals participated and 57% (N …
A Methodology For Determining The Character Of Mine Roof Rocks., Gerald Lee Finfinger
A Methodology For Determining The Character Of Mine Roof Rocks., Gerald Lee Finfinger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The underground mining industry is dependent upon the implementation of an engineering design and strategy to adequately and safely control the surrounding rock mass, with support of the roof rocks being of the greatest concern. Primary roof support systems use mechanical structures, such as roof bolts, roof trusses and cable bolts, to stiffen and control the roof rocks. Each of these systems requires the drilling of a small-diameter hole into the roof which is used to insert the mechanical structure. The structures are designed for specific geological and geotechnical characteristics and the more information that can be collected on these …

The Ethics Of Service : A New Approach To Service Learning, Jonathan C. Zur
The Ethics Of Service : A New Approach To Service Learning, Jonathan C. Zur
Honors Theses
The new model of service presented in this paper gives a framework for considering the possibilities for ethically grounded service. It does not solve al I of the problems with competing interests or tradeoffs in wellbeing, but is a solid foundation upon which many important discussions can be based. By examining the continuum of self-interest, the discussion of intent, preparedness, and outcome, and consideration for mandatory service, the paper has offered a comprehensive assessment of the ethics of service. The four parties - the volunteer, the client, the university, and the service site - have particular responsibilities to their own …
Speedup Of Optical Scanner Characterization Subsystem, Roger D. Clements, Elisa H. Barney Smith
Speedup Of Optical Scanner Characterization Subsystem, Roger D. Clements, Elisa H. Barney Smith
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Small image deformations such as those introduced by optical scanners significantly reduce the accuracy rate of optical character recognition (OCR) software. Characterization of the scanner used in the OCR process may diminish the impact on recognition rates. Theoretical methods have been developed to characterize a scanner based on the bi-level image resulting from scanning a high contrast document. Two bottlenecks in the naïve implementation of these algorithms have been identified, and techniques were developed to improve the execution time of the software. The algorithms are described and analyzed. Since approximations are used in one of the techniques, the error of …
The Connective K-Theory Of Finite Groups, Robert R. Bruner, John Greenlees
The Connective K-Theory Of Finite Groups, Robert R. Bruner, John Greenlees
Mathematics Faculty Research Publications
This paper is devoted to the connective K homology and cohomology of finite groups G. We attempt to give a systematic account from several points of view. In Chapter 1, following Quillen [50, 51], we use the methods of algebraic geometry to study the ring ku^*(BG) where ku denotes connective complex K-theory. We describe the variety in terms of the category of abelian p-subgroups of G for primes p dividing the group order. As may be expected, the variety is obtained by splicing that of periodic complex K-theory and that of integral ordinary homology, however the way these parts fit …
Impulse Control Of Stochastic Navier-Stokes Equations, J. L. Menaldi, S. S. Sritharan
Impulse Control Of Stochastic Navier-Stokes Equations, J. L. Menaldi, S. S. Sritharan
Mathematics Faculty Research Publications
In this paper we study stopping time and impulse control problems for stochastic Navier-Stokes equation. Exploiting a local monotonicity property of the nonlinearity, we establish existence and uniqueness of strong solutions in two dimensions which gives a Markov-Feller process. The variational inequality associated with the stopping time problem and the quasi-variational inequality associated with the impulse control problem are resolved in a weak sense, using semigroup approach with a convergence uniform over path.

Privacy-Preserving Collaborative Filtering Using Randomized Perturbation Techniques, Huseyin Polat, Wenliang Du
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship
Collaborative Filtering (CF) techniques are becoming increasingly popular with the evolution of the Internet. E-commerce sites use CF systems to suggest products to customers based on like-minded customers' preferences. People use CF systems to cope with information overload. To conduct collaborative filtering, data from customers are needed. However, collecting high quality data from customers is not an easy task because many customers are so concerned about their privacy that they might decide to give false information. CF systems using these data might produce inaccurate recommendations. We propose a randomized perturbation technique to protect users' privacy while still producing accurate recommendations. …
Interacting Data Services For Distributed Earthquake Modeling, Marlon Pierce, Choonhan Youn, Geoffrey C. Fox
Interacting Data Services For Distributed Earthquake Modeling, Marlon Pierce, Choonhan Youn, Geoffrey C. Fox
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship
We present XML schemas and our design for related data services for describing faults and surface displacements, which we use within earthquake modeling codes. These data services are implemented using a Web services approach and are incorporated in a portal architecture with other, general purpose services for application and file management. We make use of many Web services standards, including WSDL and SOAP, with specific implementations in Java. We illustrate how these data models and services may be used to build distributed, interacting applications through data flow.
An Adaptive Qos Routing Protocol With Dispersity For Ad-Hoc Networks, Youngki Hwang, Pramod Varshney
An Adaptive Qos Routing Protocol With Dispersity For Ad-Hoc Networks, Youngki Hwang, Pramod Varshney
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship
In this paper, we present the design and simulation of a bandwidth constrained multiple path on-demand routing protocol for ad-hoc networks to support end-to-end Quality of Service, which is known as the Adaptive Dispersity QoS Routing (ADQR) Protocol. We propose a route discovery algorithm to find multiple disjoint paths with longerlived connections, where each path also specifies associated network resource information. This provides an efficient approach for network resource reservation combined with data dispersion and for route maintenance. A longerlived path generally involves less route maintenance, resulting in an increase of bandwidth utilization. We propose a route maintenance algorithm to …
Multiple Damage Detection In Structures Using A Coupled Modal Analysis And Wavelet Transform Technique, Nasser S. Bajabaa
Multiple Damage Detection In Structures Using A Coupled Modal Analysis And Wavelet Transform Technique, Nasser S. Bajabaa
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
A new technique that couples modal analysis and wavelet transforms for detection of multiple damage in structures is introduced. Structural damage may cause local changes in one or more of the following parameters; stiffness, mass and damping that affect the dynamic behavior of the structure. For example, a crack reduces the stiffness of the structure in a localized sense, and thus reducing its natural frequency, and causes changes in both modal damping and mode shapes. In this research, two different structures have been analyzed: beams and plates. First, uniform beams with a single damage (notch) of different sizes at different …

Previous research reported that concentrations of selenium in the livers of 88-95% of lesser scaup from locations in Lake Erie, Lake St. Clair, and Lake Michigan, USA were either elevated (10-33 μg/g dry weight [dw]) or in the potentially harmful range (>33 μg/g dw). In order to determine the geographic extent of these high selenium concentrations, we collected lesser scaup in Louisiana, Arkansas, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Manitoba and analyzed the livers for 19 trace elements. We found that all trace element concentrations, except for selenium, generally were low. Arsenic, which usually is not detected in liver samples, was …

Superfluorescence Polarization: Signature Of Collisional Redistribution, A. Kumarakrishnan, S. Chudasama, Xianming Han
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
We have studied effects of magnetic sublevel degeneracy on the polarization of superfluorescent pulses generated on the Ca 4s4p1P1–3d4s1D2 transition at 5.5μm. These pulses were generated from a cell of length 50 cm by optically pumping calcium vapor on the 4s21S0–4s4p1P1 transition in the presence of Ar gas. The axis of ellipticity of superfluorescence (SF) polarization is oriented parallel to the axis of the pump-laser polarization at large detunings, and undergoes an abrupt rotation through 90° for detunings close to resonance. The distribution of populations in the magnetic sublevels of the 1P1 state can be estimated using a simple model …

Ozone (O3) and aerosol scattering ratio profiles were obtained from airborne lidar measurements on thirty-eight flights over seven deployments covering the latitudes of 40°–85°N between 4 February and 23 May 2000 as part of the Tropospheric Ozone Production about the Spring Equinox (TOPSE) field experiment. Each deployment started from Broomfield, Colorado, with bases in Churchill, Canada, and on most deployments, Thule Air Base, Greenland. Nadir and zenith lidar O3 measurements were combined with in situ O3measurements to produce vertically continuous O3 profiles from near the surface to above the tropopause. Potential vorticity (PV) distributions …

The measurement of hard X‐ray polarization in γ‐ray bursts (GRBs) would add yet another piece of information in our effort to resolve the true nature of these enigmatic objects. Here we report on the development of a dedicated polarimeter design with a relatively large FoV that is capable of studying hard X‐ray polarization (50–300 keV) from GRBs. This compact design, based on the use of a large area position‐sensitive PMT (PSPMT), is referred to as GRAPE (Gamma‐RAy Polarimeter Experiment). The feature of GRAPE that is especially attractive for studies of GRBs is the significant off‐axis polarization response (at angles greater …

Supreme Court Voting Behavior: 2001 Term, Richard G. Wilkins, Scott Worthington, Adam Becker, Sara Becker
Supreme Court Voting Behavior: 2001 Term, Richard G. Wilkins, Scott Worthington, Adam Becker, Sara Becker
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
This Study, the sixteenth in a series, tabulates and analyzes the voting behavior of the United States Supreme Court during the 2001 Term. The analysis is designed to determine whether individual Justices and the Court as a whole are voting more "conservatively," more "liberally," or about the same when compared with past Terms. This Study attempts to remove subjectivity by applying a consistent classification scheme to ten categories of cases over time. This Term's data strongly suggests that the present Court stands in an uneasy ideological balance. The Court's voting behavior during the 2001 Term reverses the modest liberal trend …

Avoiding The “Fat” Of The Land: Case Studies Of Agricultural Nutrient Balance, David Weaver, Simon Neville

Let’s start with a simple analogy: if a person eats more than they need, they gain weight. That is: if our feed inputs (kilojoules in) are greater than our outputs (exercise — kilojoules out) then we will gain weight (kilojoules in storage). That’s our fat. If, on the other hand, our feed inputs are less than our outputs, then we will lose weight. And if our inputs are the same as our outputs, our weight will remain constant. In general, the further away you are from an ‘ideal’weight, the greater the health risks. And yes, other aspects of your body management — …

"Some Of Us Are Learning Spanish And Some Of Us Are Learning English": A Comparison Of Second Language Programs In Texas, Lore Carrera-Carrillo
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Dual language education programs are gaining momentum throughout the United States as exemplary means of educating both language minority and language majority students. There is considerable evidence that learning through the native language has many advantages for language minority students. Specifically, it allows them to gain important content knowledge in their native language that will make the English they encounter more comprehensible as they enhance their overall cognitive and social development. Additionally, dual language education facilitates the development of both basic and advanced literacy in two languages for language majority students; Research results demonstrate that dual language education programs can …
Characterization Of A Missle Flyout Simulation, Russell Louis Tinsley
Characterization Of A Missle Flyout Simulation, Russell Louis Tinsley
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This thesis develops a systematic approach to exploring the response of a missile flyout software simulation to input noise. The research is intended to augment the current characterization tests employed by the Electronic Warfare Testing community. This thesis explores the direct relationship between specific input noise signals and individual simulation responses. The design defines an approach for characterizing the behavior of a deterministic simulation of tremendous complexity by controlling test conditions. Techniques for generating realistic random noise are derived. A statistical model of the relationship between input noise missile miss distance at the point of closest approach is presented. The …
