On Modeling Protein Superfamilies With Low Primary Sequence Conservation, Stephen Scott, H. Ji, P. Wen, Dmitri E. Fomenko, Vadim N. Gladyshev Jan 2003

On Modeling Protein Superfamilies With Low Primary Sequence Conservation, Stephen Scott, H. Ji, P. Wen, Dmitri E. Fomenko, Vadim N. Gladyshev

School of Computing: Technical Reports

We present several algorithms for identifying thioredoxin (Trx)-fold proteins containing a conserved CxxC motif (two cysteines separated by two residues). The low conservation of primary sequence in this protein superfamily makes conventional methods difficult to use. Therefore, we use structural properties to build our classifiers. These structural properties include secondary structure patterns as well as various properties of the residues in the protein sequences. We use this information to model Trx-fold proteins via hidden Markov models, decision trees, and algorithms in the multipleinstance learning model. In 9-fold and 12-fold jack-knife tests, some of our models performed quite well, with high …

Comprehension And Vocabulary Strategies Using Related Tradebooks With Social Studies For Bilingual And Bicultural Middle School Students, Jennifer Suzanne Tindall Jan 2003

Comprehension And Vocabulary Strategies Using Related Tradebooks With Social Studies For Bilingual And Bicultural Middle School Students, Jennifer Suzanne Tindall

All Graduate Projects

In many schools, students from ethnic minority groups are immersed in secondlanguage reading curricula with minimal attention to their native language literacy (Droop & Verhoeven, 2003). These children face the challenge ofleaming to read in languages that they have not mastered orally. As a result, these second-language students can then experience considerable gaps in their understanding ofreading because reading instruction in any language strongly builds on oral language proficiency. For these reasons, second-language literacy learning is an enormous issue in our schools today (Goodman, Goodman, & Flores, 1984). This is why the author chose to research effective reading instruction for …

Holocene Paleoflood Hydrology Of The Lower Deschutes River, Oregon, Kurt J. Hosman, Lisa L. Ely, Jim E. O'Connor

Student Published Works

Flood deposits at four sites along the lower Deschutes River, Oregon, were analyzed to determine magnitude and frequency of late Holocene flooding. Deposit stratigraphy was combined with hydraulic modeling at two sites to determine ranges of likely discharges for individual deposits. Combining these results with gaged flood data provides improved flood frequency estimates at the Axford site. The completeness and age spans of preserved flood chronologies differed among the four sites, but results were consistent for the largest floods of the last 5000 years. Single floods exceeded 2860-3800 mVs -4600 cal yr BP, 1060-1810 mVs -1300 cal yr BP, and …

Thesis Digest: Mathematical Interpretation Of Political Power And The Arkansas State Government, Andrew King Jan 2003

Thesis Digest: Mathematical Interpretation Of Political Power And The Arkansas State Government, Andrew King

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

On the whole, political power can he very difficult to quantify. A person may be powerful due to his or her personal charm, wealth, fame, credibility, or influential connections. Political bodies do not account for these qualities when creating voting procedures; they only assign voting rules to specific positions. For example, most would say that in the United States government that a Senator is more powerful than a Representative, but less powerful than the President, without knowing any way to quantify or verify those differences. Since the 1950's, mathematicians and political scientists have attempted to create mathematical models that partially …

Parametrically Tunable Audio Shelving And Equalizing Ladder Wave Digital Filters, S. A. Samad Jan 2003

Parametrically Tunable Audio Shelving And Equalizing Ladder Wave Digital Filters, S. A. Samad

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Parametrically tunable audio equalizers are conventionally realized using allpass digital filter networks. They consist of first-order shelving filters and second-order equalizing filters. In this paper, ladder wave digital filters (WDFs) with parametrically tunable coefficients are proposed as shelving and equalizing filters. Similar to the allpass realization, the transfer function power complementary property of WDFs is used to obtain efficient shelving and equalizing filters. However, unlike the allpass structures, the transfer function and the tunable parameters of the ladder WDF are derived from the analog filter equivalent of the digital shelving and equalizing filters. For the shelving WDF, the cut-off frequency …

Images Of Engineering: An Investigation Of Gender And Attitudes Towards Engineering, Liz Hodgkinson

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

The research presented in this thesis used a mixed method approach to investigate the attitudes of sixth-form students in two British cities, towards engineering as a career, with the aim of finding out which factors encourage or discourage young people from becoming engineers, and whether these differ for males and females. The study can be set in the context of the declining popularity of engineering as a career choice for males and the continuing under-representation of females, for whom engineering is a non-traditional career choice. The principal research hypothesis was that negative images of engineering discourage girls and many boys …

Law And What I Truly Should Decide, John M. Finnis Jan 2003

Law And What I Truly Should Decide, John M. Finnis

Journal Articles

Suppose we tried to think about law without trying first to describe it or to work out what the concept of it is. Suppose we asked instead whether, and if so why, and when, we-or more precisely each one of us-should favor introducing, having, endorsing, maintaining, complying with and enforcing it. We would be trying to think about law, about something not limited to our own time and town, but as something that people of any time and place of which we are aware would, as we can understand, have the same or similar need for and reasons to comply …

Extensions And Application Of The Modified Large-Sample Approach For Constructing Confidence Intervals On Functions Of Variance Components, Kye M. Gilder

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to present extensions and applications of the modified large-sample approach (MLS) for constructing approximate confidence intervals on functions of variance components. Manuscript 1 proposes a MLS approach for constructing confidence intervals for intraclass correlation coefficients. Two particular intraclass correlation coefficients are studied from an interrater and intrarater reliability study in which both raters and subjects are random effects in a balanced two-factor design, with and without subject-by-rater interaction term. A simulation study is conducted to investigate the confidence interval coverage proportions. In general, the MLS method provides satisfactory performance. Manuscript 2 considers the problem …
