Evaluation Of Performance Of Non-Parametric Confidence Intervals On Skewed Data, Monica Solis Jan 2003

Evaluation Of Performance Of Non-Parametric Confidence Intervals On Skewed Data, Monica Solis

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis we will develop a method for the construction of a non-parametric confidence interval and compare it to parametric confidence intervals for the mean of a population distribution. Using Monte Carlo simulation, we will examine the performance of both confidence intervals on data from different types of distributions. In particular, we are interested in examining how these confidence intervals perform when the data is known to come from a skewed distribution. Our goal is to illustrate the superiority of our new method against a traditional parametric approach for estimating parameters, particularly on skewed data.

Freshmen's Use Of Library Electronic Resources And Self-Efficacy, Michael Waldman Jan 2003

Freshmen's Use Of Library Electronic Resources And Self-Efficacy, Michael Waldman

Publications and Research

To encourage students' use of the library, and in particular of its electronic resources, we need to understand what factors encourage students to seek out information in the library setting. Research has shown that self-efficacy influences academic achievement. This paper looks at the role self-efficacy plays in their search for information and use of the library's electronic resources, by surveying a class of freshmen at Baruch College. Their library and computer use were analyzed and correlated with their self-efficacy scores. Through statistical analysis, we found that use of the library correlated to the students' use of the library's electronic resources. …

Habitat Standardization Of Cpue Indices: Research Needs, C. Phillip Goodyear, David Die, David W. Kerstetter, Donald Olson, Eric Prince, Gerald P. Scott

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports

Habitat standardization for billfish CPUE offers a potentially useful alternative to the statistical procedures used in the past. However, most of the assumptions of the current habitatstandardization methodology remain untested and some are not consistent with current knowledge about the behavior of billfish. This paper outlines research required to ensure the methods for habitat standardization produce robust estimates of CPUE.

The Japanese pelagic longline fishery, which has a broad temporal and spatial coverage in the Atlantic Ocean, provides an important time series used in assessments of istiophorid billfishes. Past assessments of Atlantic blue marlin and white marlin by the ICCAT SCRS indicate a pronounced decrease in stock abundance of both species over the past fifty years. The current biomass of the white marlin is estimated to be 15% of that necessary for maximum sustainable yield (BMSY), while blue marlin are estimated to be at 0.4 BMSY. Over the past fifty years Japanese pelagic longline fishing operations have moved from shallow …

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

A benthic assessment of the isolated Cayman Islands was completed at 42 sites. Major changes in the reef community structure were documented by comparison with earlier studies. Acropora palmata and A. cervicornis, once abundant as shallow framework builders, were uncommon. Diseased stony corals were seen in >90% of the study sites, with the highest averages in Little Cayman, especially at Bloody Bay which is one of the most highly regulated marine parks in the Cayman Islands. The Montastraea annularis species complex accounted for two-thirds of the diseased corals which, along with other massive species, were affected largely by white-plague …

This document reports the data collected during the third year of this project. Coral communities and …

Toward An Institutional Theory Of Sovereignty, Ryan Goodman, Derek P. Jinks Jan 2003

Toward An Institutional Theory Of Sovereignty, Ryan Goodman, Derek P. Jinks

Faculty Articles

Scholarship in international law is preoccupied with the structural tension between state sovereignty and international obligation. This preoccupation presupposes that states incur sovereignty costs when entering binding international commitments. In our view, this presupposition requires substantial qualification. In this Article, we propose a sociological model of sovereignty that views states as organizational entities embedded in and reflecting a wider social environment. Such an approach, we maintain, illuminates the ways in which constraints empower actors (including states). Our claim is not simply that international law helps overcome collective action problems by facilitating cooperation and coordination. Rather, we maintain that the constitutive …

Late Albian Adaptive Radiation In The Calcareous Nannofossil Genus Eiffellithus, David K. Watkins, James A. Bergen

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Well preserved nannofossil assemblages in upper Albian and lower Cenomanian hemipelagic sections from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 171B preserve a record of the early history and adaptive radiation of the genus Eiffellithus. Seven distinct taxa are recognized and differentiated, with one previously named taxon (E. monechiae) emended and four new species described: E. praestigium, E. vonsalisiae, E. equibiramus, and E. parvus. Sample census data indicate that most species evolved, rose to dominance, and then rapidly declined to extinction, to be replaced by other members of the genus. Newly evolved species tended to remain at low …

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Six high-resolution climatic reconstructions, based on diatom analyses from lake sediment cores from the northern prairies of North America, show that shifts in drought conditions on decadal through multicentennial scales have prevailed in this region for at least the last two millennia. The predominant broad-scale pattern seen at all sites is a major shift in moisture regimes from wet to dry, or vice versa (depending on location), that occurred after a period of relative stability. These large-scale shifts at the different sites exhibit spatial coherence at regional scales. The three Canadian sites record this abrupt shift between anno Domini 500 …

Climate Effects On Corn Yield In Missour, Q. Steven Hu, Gregory Buyanovsky Jan 2003

Climate Effects On Corn Yield In Missour, Q. Steven Hu, Gregory Buyanovsky

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Understanding climate effects on crop yield has been a continuous endeavor aiming at improving farming technology and management strategy, minimizing negative climate effects, and maximizing positive climate effects on yield. Many studies have examined climate effects on corn yield in different regions of the United States. However, most of those studies used yield and climate records that were shorter than 10 years and were for different years and localities. Although results of those studies showed various influences of climate on corn yield, they could be time specific and have been difficult to use for deriving a comprehensive understanding of climate …

Lisa Data Analysis: Source Identification And Subtraction, Neil J. Cornish, Shane L. Larson Jan 2003

Lisa Data Analysis: Source Identification And Subtraction, Neil J. Cornish, Shane L. Larson

All Physics Faculty Publications

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna will operate as an AM-FM receiver for gravitational waves. For binary systems, the source location, orientation and orbital phase are encoded in the amplitude and frequency modulation. The same modulations spread a monochromatic signal over a range of frequencies, making it difficult to identify individual sources. We present a method for detecting and subtracting individual binary signals from a data stream with many overlapping signals.

Secondary Electron Production And Transport Mechanisms By Measurement Of Angle-Energyresolved Cross Sections Of Secondary And Backscattered Electrons, Jason Kite, John R. Dennison Jan 2003

Secondary Electron Production And Transport Mechanisms By Measurement Of Angle-Energyresolved Cross Sections Of Secondary And Backscattered Electrons, Jason Kite, John R. Dennison

All Physics Faculty Publications

The angle dependence of emitted electron spectra from a polycrystalline Au surface has been measured at several incident electron beam energies. The range of incident energies (~100 eV to 2500 eV) extends from below the first crossover energy, through Emax, to above the second crossover energy. The traditional distinction between secondary electrons (50 eV) is found to be inconsistent with our energy- and angle-resolved measurements. We suggest a more “natural” delineation occurs at the local minima of the emission spectra; this feature is studied as a function of incident energy and emission angle. This work is also supported by the …

Electronic Signatures In E-Healthcare: The Need For A Federal Standard, Ashoke S. Talukdar

Journal of Law and Health

Healthcare, like many industries, is fast embracing the benefits of modern information technology ("IT"). The wide range of available publications on the use of IT in healthcare indicates that IT provides the promise of faster and more comprehensive information about all aspects of the healthcare delivery process, to all classes of its consumers - patients, doctors, nurses, insurance adjudicators, health inspectors, epidemiologists, and biostatisticians. But the drive towards electronic information in health care is not rooted merely in efficiency; more recently, significant emphasis has been placed on patient safety issues raised by the Institute of Medicine's ("IOM") year 2001 quality …

The Advertising Agency's Role In Marketing Communication Demand Creation, Barbara Pellow, Patricia Sorce, Franziska Frey, Lauren Oslon

Books

Early adopters of digital color printing have consistently been told that they need to educate the advertising agency market to drive digital color print volume. Experience has yielded mixed results for digital color printers who have taken this approach. There have been several hypotheses suggested why agency education has had limited value, including: the price/value equation for digital color printing, limited availability of accurate data for targeted marketing campaigns, and relative lack of use of return on investment metrics for one-toone marketing. As part of the industry analysis effort for the digital color market, the Printing Industry Center at RIT …

Hypothalamic proopiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons are critical for controlling homeostatic functions in the mammal. We used a transgenic mouse model in which the POMC neurons were labeled with enhanced green fluorescent protein to perform visualized, whole-cell patch recordings from prepubertal female hypothalamic slices. The mouse POMC-enhanced green fluorescent protein neurons expressed the same endogenous conductances (a transient outward K current and a hyperpolarization-activated, cation current) that have been described for guinea pig POMC neurons. In addition, the selective -opioid receptor agonist DAMGO induced an outward current (maximum of 12.8 1.2 pA), which reversed at K equilibrium potential (EK), in the majority …

The Anorexigenic Fatty Acid Synthase Inhibitor, C75, Is A Nonspecific Neuronal Activator, Kanji A. Takahashi, James L. Smart, Hongyan Liu, Roger D. Cone

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

C75, a recently derived compound that potently suppresses feeding and induces weight loss, has been proposed to act mainly by inhibiting fatty acid synthase (FAS) in central neurons that control feeding. For example, normal, fasting- associated, hypothalamic increases in neuropeptide Y (NPY)/Agouti-related protein (AGRP) expression and decreases in proopiomelanocortin (POMC)/cocaine and amphetamine regulated transcript (CART) expression were reported to be blocked by C75. Using loose-patch extracellular recording in acute slices, we tested the effect of C75 on anorexigenic POMC neurons and orexigenic NPY neurons of the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus, which were identified by promoter-driven GFP expression, as well as on …

Dynamic Games And Competition For Water Resources, Megumi Nakao Jan 2003

Dynamic Games And Competition For Water Resources, Megumi Nakao

Open Access Dissertations

Individuals, cities, and nations compete for limited resources in many areas of the world. The social costs generated by competition include the over-exploitation of renewable resources and the depletion of non-renewable resources. This dissertation examines the problem of competition for limited resources in a game-theoretic framework. The goal is to gain insight regarding how economic agents choose strategies and programs regarding resources, so that we may design public policies that will motivate individuals, firms, and nations to generate greater values with limited resources. This dissertation demonstrates how to estimate those gains using game theory models involving Nash bargaining solutions and …
