Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings
The California least tern (Sterna antillarium brownii) is an endangered, small (cm), ground-nesting shorebird that winters along the Pacific Coast of Central America and nests in colonies on coastal dunes and beaches from southern Baja to San Francisco, California. It was one of the originally listed species contained in the Endangered Species Act in 1970. Major nest sites remain at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. During the past 15 years, adult tern counts have increased from about 300 to over 600 breeding pairs at the site. This poster provides results of an empirical analysis of annual fixed-cost agreements …

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings
The National Wildlife Research Center (NWRC), based in Fort Collins, CO, is the research arm for the Animal Plant and Health Inspection Service’s Wildlife Services Program. Its mission is to resolve conflicts between wildlife and humans. The NWRC established a GIS (Geographic Information System) function in 1996. The relevance of GIS to two projects are featured in this poster. Project 1 was conducted in 1996 and was a joint effort between the NWRC and the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA). In this project, 60 Chinese ring-necked pheasants were radio-instrumented and their movements studied. The main goal of the …

We describe Peer-to-Peer Grids built around Integration of technologies from the peer-to-peer and Grid fields. We focus on the role of Web services linked by a powerful event service using uniform XML interfaces and application level routing. We describe how a rich synchronous and asynchronous collaboration environment can support virtual communities built on top of such infrastructure. Universal access mechanisms are discussed.

The brain's histaminergic system has been implicated in hippocampal synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory, as well as brain reward and reinforcement. Our past pharmacological and lesion studies indicated that the brain's histamine system exerts inhibitory effects on the brain's reinforcement respective reward system reciprocal to mesolimbic dopamine systems, thereby modulating learning and memory performance. Given the close functional relationship between brain reinforcement and memory processes, the total disruption of brain histamine synthesis via genetic disruption of its synthesizing enzyme, histidine decarboxylase (HDC), in the mouse might have differential effects on learning dependent on the task-inherent reinforcement contingencies. Here, we investigated …

Ecologically and commercially significant coral reef fishes were surveyed at 28 sites in the Turks and Caicos Islands during August 1999. Our results constitute the first quantitative census of these fishes and can serve as baseline information for subsequent studies. Their density and size generally were highest off West Caicos and lowest in Mouchoir Bank. Herbivore density overall showed no correlation with macroalgal index (a proxy for biomass) or live stony coral cover, but surgeonfish density was positively correlated with macroalgal index. Species richness of these select fishes was positively correlated with the species richness of stony corals that were …

Major constituents of the benthic reef community (stony corals, algae) were assessed in 28 reefs on the Caicos, Turks and Mouchoir Banks. Living stony coral cover ranged from 8-28%, averaging 18% overall. Montastraea annularis and M. faveolata of “intermediate” sizes (cm) dominated all examined reefs. Acropora palmata and A. cervicornis were scarce. The most frequently recruiting scleractinians were Porites astreoides and Agaricia agaricites; Montastraea recruits were uncommon. Old partial-colony mortality (overall mean = 23%) was greater than recent partial-colony mortality (mean = 3%). Crustose coralline algae and turf algae were generally more abundant than macroalgae. Mouchoir Bank, with the …

United States Public Health Resources
Onset of clinical immunity to Plasmodium falciparum occurred among Javanese migrants to Indonesian Papua. Surveillance of the 243 migrants investigated began on the day of their arrival in Indonesian Papua and continued for 33 months. Asexual parasitaemia without fever constituted objective evidence of clinical immunity. Compared with .rst infection, the odds ratio (OR) for not having fever at the fourth infection within 24 months was 3.2 [95% con.dence interval (CI)=1.03–10.2; P=0.02]. The corresponding OR with fewer infections within 24 months was not distinguishable from 1.0. The level of the fourth parasitaemia within 24 months (N=58) was classified …

Estimated Risk Of Transmission Of The West Nile Virus Through Blood Transfusion In The Us, 2002, Brad J. Biggerstaff, Lyle R. Petersen
United States Public Health Resources
BACKGROUND: The West Nile virus (WNV) epidemic in 2002 in the US saw over 3300 reported human cases of WNV disease, with over 2300 reported cases of WNV encephalitis and meningitis. The first documented cases of transfusion transmission of WNV through voluntary blood donation also occurred.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Case onset dates from the 2002 WNV epidemic in the US were used to estimate the risk of transfusion-associated transmission with statistical resampling. An easily computed approximating formula for the mean risk was derived. Estimates were computed for six high-incidence states and metropolitan areas.
RESULTS: Mean and …

Self-Aggregates Of Cationic Meso-Tetratolylporphyrins In Aqueous Solutions, Pavel Kubat, Kamil Lang, Kristina Prochazkova, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr.

Aggregation properties of meso-tetratolylporphyrins bearing cationic substituents of a lipophilic nature such as ammonium, pyridinium, phosphonium, sulfonium, and isothiouronium were studied by UV/vis and resonance light scattering spectroscopy. The exciton point-dipole approximation was used to predict the structural alignment of the porphyrin units within the aggregate. The contribution of various types of aggregates depends on the porphyrin substitution, ionic strength, and temperature of aqueous solution of the porphyrin. In general, the preferred structure of an aggregate formed by temperature-induced aggregation is the J-aggregate exhibiting the characteristically narrow, red-shifted Soret band indicating a parallel "side-by-side" arrangement of the porphyrin units. The …

Photoinduced Electron-Transfer Along Α-Helical And Coiled-Coil Metallopeptides, Anna Fedorova, Anita Chaudhari, Michael Y. Ogawa
Chemistry Faculty Publications
A peptide-based electron-transfer system has been designed in which the specific positions of redox-active metal complexes appended to either an a-helix, or an a-helical coiled-coil, can be reversed to test the effect of the helix dipole in controlling photoinduced electron-transfer rates. Two 30-residue apopeptides were prepared having the following sequences: (1) Ac-K-(IEALEGK)(ICALEGK)(IEALEHK)-(IEALEGK)-G-amide, and (II) Ac-K-(IEALEGK)(IHALEGK)-(IEALECK)(IEALEGK)-G-amide. Each apopeptide was reacted first with [Ru(bpy)(2)(phen-ClAc)](2+), where bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine and phen-ClAc = 5-chloroacetamido-1,10-phenanthroline, to attach the ruthenium polypyridyl center to the cysteine side-chain of the polypeptide. The isolated products were then reacted with [Ru(NH3)(5)(H2O)](2+) to yield the binuclear electron-transfer metallopeptides ET-I and ET-II. …

You answered God’s call and came to seminary to prepare for ministry. How will that happen? Before you graduate you will read scores of books, sit through hundreds of hours of classes, write papers and pass exams. But that will not guarantee preparation for ministry. Your spiritual and vocational formation is the heart of preparation for ministry. A servant of God is formed through the integration of Being, Knowing, and Doing. It takes place in community, as God graciously works in and through each person. Formation calls for biblical/theological and theoretical foundations, the developing of ministry skills, the doing of …

A Dynamic Real-Time Scheduling Algorithm For Reduced Energy Consumption In I/O Devices, Rohini Krishnapura, Steve Goddard
A Dynamic Real-Time Scheduling Algorithm For Reduced Energy Consumption In I/O Devices, Rohini Krishnapura, Steve Goddard
School of Computing: Technical Reports
In real-time systems, Dynamic Power Management (DPM) techniques have traditionally centered on the CPU with less focus given to I/O. However, I/O-based DPM techniques have been popularly researched in non-real-time systems. These techniques focus on switching I/O devices to low power states based on some policy. These methods, however, are not applicable to realtime environments because of the non-deterministic nature of the policies. Recently, scheduling techniques to reduce power consumption of I/O devices in real-time systems have emerged. In this paper, we propose an online task scheduling algorithm, Slack Utilization for Reduced Energy (SURE), which utilizes slack in periodic task …
