On The Effect Of Adjacent Sector Multiple Access Interference On Space Time Spreading Systems, Peter Vial, Ibrahim Raad, Tadeusz A. Wysocki Jan 2003

On The Effect Of Adjacent Sector Multiple Access Interference On Space Time Spreading Systems, Peter Vial, Ibrahim Raad, Tadeusz A. Wysocki

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)

Space Time Spreading systems are proposed as a method to enhance communications between the Base Station (BS) and Mobile Station (MS) by using multiple transmit antennas at the Base Station. This provides a form of transmit diversity when there are more than one transmitting antennas. Space Time Spreading systems have been shown to be efficient in their use of the limited number of orthogonal spreading sequences and to provide a diversity gain, which in the case of two transmitter antennas at the BS and one receiving antenna at the MS, is of order two. The paper looks at the effect …

“All Hayll, All Hayll, Both Blithe And Glad” : Direct Address In Early English Drama, 1400-1585, Michelle M. Butler '90

Doctoral Dissertations

"Now will I praise those godly men,

our ancestors, each in his own time...

All these were glorious in their time,

each illustrious in his day.

Some of them have left behind a name

and men recount their praiseworthy deeds " (Sirach 44: I. 7-8)

Direct address is widely acknowledged as a fundamental technique in early English, particularly medieval, drama. The observation that early English drama does not have the convention of the ‘fourth wall,’ and frequently speaks directly to and interacts with the audience would not be news to scholars o f this drama; many have mentioned it. Annual Report 2002-2003, Imsa Fund Jan 2003

Annual Report 2002-2003, Imsa Fund

IMSA Fund Reports

Reeling from an unprecedented eleventh-hour $2.5 million reduction to its state-appropriated operating budget for fiscal year 03, IMSA began the 2002-03 year by making the difficult decisions required. The Board of Trustees cut staff positions, cut the salaries of all remaining employees, increased student fees by 43%, accessed temporary or one-time revenue sources, and reduced programs and services for IMSA students, Illinois educators and other Illinois students.

In the aftermath of the reduction, the IMSA community rallied, choosing once again to stand up and be trailblazers, acting to preserve the academic integrity and distinctiveness of its remaining internal and statewide …

From Keynes To Friedman Via Mints: Resolving The Dispute Over The Quantity Theory Oral Tradition, Robert Leeson Jan 2003

From Keynes To Friedman Via Mints: Resolving The Dispute Over The Quantity Theory Oral Tradition, Robert Leeson

Business Book Chapters

The Keynes Before Keynes

Milton Friedman (chapter 2 [1956], 3-4) asserted that “Chicago was one of the few academic centres at which the quantity theory continued to be a central and vigorous part of the oral tradition throughout the 1930’s and 1940’s”. Friedman sought to “nurture” the revival of the quantity theory by linking it to this Chicago “oral tradition”. According to Friedman the “flavor” of this oral tradition was captured in a model in which the quantity theory was “in the first instance a theory of the demand for money”. Friedman added that to “the best of my knowledge …

Towards A Resolution Of The Dispute - Introduction, Robert Leeson Jan 2003

Towards A Resolution Of The Dispute - Introduction, Robert Leeson

Business Book Chapters

The chapters in Part Four fall into four sections. The first three chapters represent Patinkin’s ongoing scholarly interest in explaining the evolution of Keynes’ economics and his relationship to the Chicago economists. In his Sir Dennis Robertson lecture, Patinkin (chapter 44 [1974], 4, 27, 12) explained that he was using the term “Keynesian monetary theory” in contrast to “the quantity theory” to describe “the General Theory and the literature to which it gave rise – though I should note that the aspect of the theory that is my primary concern here (namely, the treatment of money from the viewpoint of …

The Fallacy That Fair Use And Information Should Be Provided For Free: An Analysis Of The Responses To The Dmca's Section 1201, Mauricio España

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This Note argues that 17 U.S.C. § 120, Digital Millennium Copyright Act, is not only necessary to ensure that copyright law is able to progress and advance in the digital revolution, but more importantly, that the protection of copyrighted works will benefit the public in ways the analog world cannot. It also argues that legal commentators' fears about § 1201 are misplaced.

The Morphogenesis Of Evolutionary Developmental Biology, Scott F. Gilbert Jan 2003

The Morphogenesis Of Evolutionary Developmental Biology, Scott F. Gilbert

Biology Faculty Works

The early studies of evolutionary developmental biology (Evo-Devo) come from several sources. Tributaries flowing into Evo-Devo came from such disciplines as embryology, developmental genetics, evolutionary biology, ecology, paleontology, systematics, medical embryology and mathematical modeling. This essay will trace one of the major pathways, that from evolutionary embryology to Evo-Devo and it will show the interactions of this pathway with two other sources of Evo-Devo: ecological developmental biology and medical developmental biology. Together, these three fields are forming a more inclusive evolutionary developmental biology that is revitalizing and providing answers to old and important questions involving the formation of biodiversity on …

The Effect Of Standards-Based Professional Development In Content Knowledge And Questioning Techniques On Classroom Practices Of Fourth Grade Teachers, Elizabeth T. Walker Jan 2003

The Effect Of Standards-Based Professional Development In Content Knowledge And Questioning Techniques On Classroom Practices Of Fourth Grade Teachers, Elizabeth T. Walker

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

Based on the literature, the largest stumbling blocks to curricular reform at the elementary level are a lack of teacher math content knowledge and a lack of modeling of standards-based classroom practices. This study examines the effect on classroom .practices, especially in the area of teacher initiated, critical thinking questions, when these barriers are removed by providing teachers with sustained, standards-based professional development that: expands content knowledge through modeling, hands-on, inquiry-based, constructivist teaching, models and emphasizes the use of critical thinking questions, encourages collaborative learning, and provides immediate opportunities for implementation and reflective practices.

Comparison Of The Theoretical And Experimental Band Structure Of Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride) Crystal, Chun-Gang Duan, Wai-Ning Mei, J.R. Hardy, Stephen Ducharme, Jaewu Choi, Peter A. Dowben Jan 2003

Comparison Of The Theoretical And Experimental Band Structure Of Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride) Crystal, Chun-Gang Duan, Wai-Ning Mei, J.R. Hardy, Stephen Ducharme, Jaewu Choi, Peter A. Dowben

Stephen Ducharme Publications

The electronic structure and band symmetries of the ferroelectric phase of poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) are studied by using the first-principles density-functional method. Our calculated results agree well with the angle-resolved photoemission experiments. We find that the PVDF crystal has an energy gap of about 6 eV at the Γ-point. Large dispersion of the valence band is found only along the chain direction, which is consistent with the quasi-one-dimensional nature of PVDF. In particular, the band symmetries of the valence states deduced theoretically are in good agreement with experiment. Finally, further investigations on the electronic structure of poly(trifluoroethylene) (PTrFE) …

On The Existence And Stability Of Liquid Water On The Martian Surface, Justin Thompson Jan 2003

On The Existence And Stability Of Liquid Water On The Martian Surface, Justin Thompson

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Present-day Mars is thought to be a frozen desert on which liquid water is not likely to be found. The prevailing assumption has been that due to average temperatures below 273 K and atmospheric pressures at or below water's triple-point vapor pressure of 6.1 mbar, the existence of liquid water as an equilibrium phase at or near the surface is impossible at the present epoch. However, there is substantial evidence that liquid water has existed in the past and may presently still exist on or directly below the Martian surface. I conducted simulation experiments in the Andromeda planetary environmental chamber …

Importance Of Food Ration And Water Temperature On Growth Of Juvenile Green Sunfish (Lepomis Cyanellus), Christopher J. Chizinski, Kevin L. Pope Jan 2003

Importance Of Food Ration And Water Temperature On Growth Of Juvenile Green Sunfish (Lepomis Cyanellus), Christopher J. Chizinski, Kevin L. Pope

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

A randomized design was used to test the difference in growth rates of juvenile green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus) subjected to three treatments (food ration, temperature and salinity). Food ration and water temperature were similarly important in affecting growth of juvenile green sunfish. Juvenile green sunfish were found to accomplish similar growth with scarce food and optimum temperature as with abundant food and sub-optimum temperature. This equal and independent relation to biotic and abiotic factors should be expected in a ubiquitous generalist species, such as green sunfish.

Estimation Of Fishing Tournament Mortality And Its Sampling Variance, Gene R. Wilde, Kevin L. Pope, Richard E. Strauss Jan 2003

Estimation Of Fishing Tournament Mortality And Its Sampling Variance, Gene R. Wilde, Kevin L. Pope, Richard E. Strauss

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

The mortality of fish captured in fishing tournaments has commonly been estimated incorrectly and, thus far, only one account has presented an estimate of the standard error or confidence interval for tournament-associated mortality. In this article we describe methods for estimating the initial, delayed, and total mortality of tournament-caught fish and provide formulae for estimating the sampling variances of these estimates. The absence of such estimates from previous studies may explain an observed lack of change in tournament-associated mortality between the 1980s and the 1990s. Our methods provide insight into the design of studies of tournament-associated mortality and suggest, for …

Letter To The Editor: Comment On ‘‘Hydrocarbon Composition And Toxicity Of Sediments Following The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill In Prince William Sound, Alaska, Usa’’, Stanley D. Rice, Mark G. Carls, Ron A. Heintz, Jeffrey W. Short Jan 2003

Short

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

In their recent paper, Page et al. concluded that spilled oil lost toxicity due to weathering and that it dispersed from beaches so rapidly that the potential for toxicity is now, 13 years after the spill, negligible. Their conclusions, however, are based on insensitive toxicity tests, a statistical design with low power, and invalid assumptions regarding the extent and location of remaining oil.

Although Page et al. make a convincing case that the narcotic toxicity of Exxon Valdez oil declined rapidly after the spill, the claim that all oil toxicity has similarly declined requires a higher standard of evidence. They …
