What Works For Women In Undergraduate Physics?, Barbara L. Whitten, Suzanne R. Foster, Margaret L. Ducombe Jan 2003

What Works For Women In Undergraduate Physics?, Barbara L. Whitten, Suzanne R. Foster, Margaret L. Ducombe

ADVANCE Library Collection

The predominance of men in physics remains a puzzle. To attract talented women and minorities, the culture of college physics needs a makeover. In 1998, women received about 40% of the bachelor's degrees in mathematics and chemistry, but only 19% of the bachelor's in physics. That underrepresentation worsens at higher levels: The same year, women constituted 13% of physics PhD recipients and 8% of physics faculty members.(1) According to NSF, the community of working PhD-level physicists in 2000 was 84% white and 93% male.(2) What accounts for such stark numbers?

Where To Sit? A Look At Frequency's Effect On Volume Distribution In The Singletary Concert Hall, Matthew Williams Jan 2003

Where To Sit? A Look At Frequency's Effect On Volume Distribution In The Singletary Concert Hall, Matthew Williams

Kaleidoscope

The objective of this project was to find the best seat in the Concert Hall of the Singletary Center for the Arts, here at the University of Kentucky. While subjective factors often determine a patron's favorite place to sit, I decided that an objective scientific approach could prove useful when I, or anyone, next attended a concert. Using only a keyboard amplified by speakers placed at center stage and a sound level monitor, I measured separately the volume of six different frequencies (at intervals of an octave) at twelve different seats throughout the Hall. Defining the best seat as the …

Web services can be defined as loosely coupled, reusable software components that semantically encapsulate discrete functionality and are distributed and programmatically accessible over standard Internet protocols. Web services have received a lot of hype, the reasons for which are not easily determined. Some of their benefits might even seem to waste away, once we touch on the nitty-gritty details, because Web services per se do not offer a solution to underlying problems. The contributions included in this section delve into some of these issues, including: pitfalls of workflow issues; structuring procedural knowledge into problem-solving methods; discussing how a low initial …

Changes In The Timing Of High River Flows In New England Over The 20th Century, G. A. Hodgkins, R. W. Dudley, T. G. Huntington Jan 2003

Changes In The Timing Of High River Flows In New England Over The 20th Century, G. A. Hodgkins, R. W. Dudley, T. G. Huntington

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The annual timing of river flows is a good indicator of climate-related changes, or lack of changes, for rivers with long-term data that drain unregulated basins with stable land use. Changes in the timing of annual winter/spring (January 1 to May 31) and fall (October 1 to December 31) center of volume dates were analyzed for 27 rural, unregulated river gaging stations in New England, USA with an average of 68 years of record. The center of volume date is the date by which half of the total volume of water for a given period of time flows past a …

Ecological Games In Space And Time: The Distribution And Abundance Of Antarctic Krill And Penguins, Suzanne H. Alonzo, Paul V. Switzer, Marc Mangel Jan 2003

Ecological Games In Space And Time: The Distribution And Abundance Of Antarctic Krill And Penguins, Suzanne H. Alonzo, Paul V. Switzer, Marc Mangel

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

The distribution and abundance of organisms are affected by behaviors, such as habitat selection, foraging, and reproduction. These behaviors are driven by interactions within and between species, environmental conditions, and the biology of the species in-volved. Although extensive theoretical work has explored predator–prey dynamics, these models have not considered the impact of behavioral plasticity and life-history trade-offs on predicted patterns. We apply a modeling method that allows the consideration of a spatial, dynamic ecological game between predators and prey using a life-history perspec-tive. As an illustrative example, we model the habitat selection of Antarctic krill and penguins during the time …

Rhythmic Parsing Of Sonified Dna And Rna Sequences, Charlie Cullen, Eugene Coyle Jan 2003

Rhythmic Parsing Of Sonified Dna And Rna Sequences, Charlie Cullen, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

Sonification allows existing mathematical data to be used as the model for audio output, notably that the audio produced is related to or representative of that data in some way. Existing work in the field has been largely focused on the aesthetic tailoring of the output audio for compositional benefit rather than as a framework for audio representation and analysis. It is the goal of this research to apply existing techniques for pitch substitution to an analytical method that seeks to define and represent patterns within existing data sets (primarily DNA and RNA sequences). It is often the case that …

Feedback Classification Of Nonlinear Single-Input Control Systems With Controllable Linearization: Normal Forms, Canonical Forms, And Invariants, Issa Amadou Tall, Witold Respondek Jan 2003

Feedback Classification Of Nonlinear Single-Input Control Systems With Controllable Linearization: Normal Forms, Canonical Forms, And Invariants, Issa Amadou Tall, Witold Respondek

Articles and Preprints

We study the feedback group action on single-input nonlinear control systems. We follow an approach of Kang and Krener based on analyzing, step by step, the action of homogeneous transformations on the homogeneous part of the same degree of the system. We construct a dual normal form and dual invariants with respect to those obtained by Kang. We also propose a canonical form and a dual canonical form and show that two systems are equivalent via a formal feedback if and only if their canonical forms (resp., their dual canonical forms) coincide. We give an explicit construction of transformations bringing …

The Semiotics Of Signlessness: A Buddhist Doctrine Of Signs, Mario D'Amato Jan 2003

The Semiotics Of Signlessness: A Buddhist Doctrine Of Signs, Mario D'Amato

Faculty Publications

In this paper, I consider a Buddhist response to the issue of unlimited semiosis: In other words, I offer a Buddhist account of how unlimited semiosis should be understood. I do this by following the doctrine of signs offered in an Indian Buddhist text of the Mahamyamna from circa the fourth century CE, a text known as the Mahamyamnasutra m mlamD kamra (Ornament to the Scriptures of the Great Vehicle; hereafter, ‘the Ornament’). Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Buddhist semiotics, from both a historical and a philosophical point of view, is that in its theorizing of the semiotic process, …

K_P-Removable Sequences Of Graphs, John P. Mcsorley, Thomas D. Porter Jan 2003

K_P-Removable Sequences Of Graphs, John P. Mcsorley, Thomas D. Porter

Articles and Preprints

Let {G_pn | n ≥ 1} = {G_p1, G_p2, G_p3, . . .} be a countable sequence of simple graphs, where G_pn has pn vertices. This sequence is called K_p-removable if G_p1 = K_p, and G_pn − K_p = G_p(n−1) for every n ≥ 2 and for every K_p in G_pn. We give a general construction of such sequences. We specialize to sequences in which each G_pn is regular; these are called regular (K_p, λ)-removable sequences, λ is a fixed number, 0 ≤ λ ≤ p, referring to the fact that G_pn is (λ(n− 1) + p − 1)-regular. We …

Determining Crystal Thickness By Measuring Optical Rotation In Chiral Crystals, Cori Bruce, James Bish, Jamie Walker Jan 2003

Determining Crystal Thickness By Measuring Optical Rotation In Chiral Crystals, Cori Bruce, James Bish, Jamie Walker

The Corinthian

In this experiment, it will be shown that the linear relationship between pathlength and observed rotation can be applied to predict the pathlength based on the observed rotation. It should be noted, however, that the method devised will only work for chiral crystals. When aqueous NaC103 solution evaporates two rotamers will form that will rotate plane-polarized light in equal but opposite directions. Hence, the crystals must be separated to obtain linear correlations in regards to the two rotamers.

Teachers' Perceived Barriers To Using Computers And The Internet For Instruction, Lisa M. Thompson Jan 2003

Teachers' Perceived Barriers To Using Computers And The Internet For Instruction, Lisa M. Thompson

The Corinthian

The purpose of this study was to identify the three most frequently reported barriers to using computers and the Internet for instruction. This descriptive, survey study used a 17-item survey to gauge the responses of 15 High School InTech educators at Macon State College in Macon, Georgia. The three barriers most frequently reported, among the "Moderate barrier" and "Great barrier" rankings, were "not enough computers"; "outdated, incompatible, or unreliable computers"; and "lack of release time for teachers to learn, practice, or plan ways to use computers or the Internet." These perceived barriers must be addressed in order to increase the …

From Subject Gateways To Portals: The Role Of Metadata In Accessing International Research, Susan J. Heron, Ardis Hanson Jan 2003

From Subject Gateways To Portals: The Role Of Metadata In Accessing International Research, Susan J. Heron, Ardis Hanson

Dean's Office Publications

Traditionally, academicians and researchers have turned to librarians to assist in the organisation and, ultimately, the retrieval of information. Since the beginning of scholarly activity libraries have organized information based upon the scholar’s area of study. Subject collections comprised of materials in various formats have drawn scholars to the library. Today libraries organize myriad online resources to assist selected user communities, again based upon areas of study through the development of subject gateways or portals. However, a critical issue remains how best to broker access to heterogeneous information and learning resources.

The Science And Sociology Of Hunting: Shifting Practices And Perceptions In The United States And Great Britain, John W. Grandy, Elizabeth Stallman, David W. Macdonald Jan 2003

The Science And Sociology Of Hunting: Shifting Practices And Perceptions In The United States And Great Britain, John W. Grandy, Elizabeth Stallman, David W. Macdonald

State of the Animals 2003

Between the late nineteenth and early twenty-first centuries, both the rationale for and perception of hunting shifted in the United States, coinciding with demographic changes in the U.S. population (Duda 1993). Similar changes in attitude, though largely undocumented, probably occurred in the United Kingdom. (For example, foxhunting did not emerge as a substantial sport until the second half of the eighteenth century; before that, foxes were widely perceived as pests and killed whenever the opportunity arose [Marvin 2000]). Our purpose in this chapter is to compare these two countries in order to reveal some of the science and the sociology …

Pain And Distress Associated With Polyclonal Antibody Production: Discussion And Recommendations, The Humane Society Of The United States

ANIMAL RESEARCH

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) held a workshop in August 2002 in order to develop recommendations for minimizing pain and distress associated with polyclonal antibody (Pab) production. A small group of experts in the fields of antibody production, animal welfare, in vitro alternatives, and/or regulatory compliance participated in the roundtable discussion. The workshop was a scientifically based meeting, and recommendations were based on the extensive experience of the workshop participants as well as published literature regarding the relevant issues.

Participants recognized that insufficient attention has been paid to animal welfare aspects of Pab production, in part because …

Minding Animals, Minding Earth: Science, Nature, Kinship, And Heart, Marc Bekoff

Sentience Collection

This paper emphasizes the importance of broadening behavioral, ecological, and conservation science into a more integrative, interdisciplinary, socially responsible, compassionate, spiritual, and holistic endeavor.2,3 I will stress the significance of studies of animal behavior, especially ethological research concerned with animal emotions, in which individuals are named and recognized for their own personalities and temperaments, for helping us not only to learn about the nonhuman animal beings (hereafter animals) with whom we share Earth, but also for learning about who we are, our place in Nature, our humanness. We can be best understood in relationship to others. I will also develop …

A Tail-Recursive Semantics For Stack Inspections, John Clements, Mathias Felleisen Jan 2003

A Tail-Recursive Semantics For Stack Inspections, John Clements, Mathias Felleisen

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Security folklore holds that a security mechanism based on stack inspection is incompatible with a global tail call optimization policy. An implementation of such a language may have to allocate memory for a source-code tail call, and a program that uses only tail calls (and no other memory-allocating construct) may nevertheless exhaust the available memory. In this paper, we prove this widely held belief wrong. We exhibit an abstract machine for a language with security stack inspection whose space consumption function is equivalent to that of the canonical tail call optimizing abstract machine. Our machine is surprisingly simple and suggests …

Selectivities Of Potassium-Calcium And Potassium-Lead Exchange In Two Tropical Soils, Chip Appel, Lena Q. Ma, R. Dean Rhue, William Reve Jan 2003

Selectivities Of Potassium-Calcium And Potassium-Lead Exchange In Two Tropical Soils, Chip Appel, Lena Q. Ma, R. Dean Rhue, William Reve

Earth and Soil Sciences

Measurement of cation selectivity in soils provides important information about the affinity and binding strength of a particular cation on soil surfaces. Gaines-Thomas (KGT) selectivity coefficients were determined for a variety of K/Ca and K/Pb ratios on an Oxisol and Ultisol soil from Puerto Rico. The calculated KGT values indicated a preference for K+ over Ca2+ or Pb2+. The selectivity for Pb2+ was significantly greater than that for Ca2+ due to Pb2+'s larger hydrated charge density relative to that of Ca2+. The patterns of selectivity were independent …

Determination Of The Topological Structure Of An Orbifold By Its Group Of Orbifold Diffeomerphisms, Joseph E. Borzellino, Victor Brunsden Jan 2003

Determination Of The Topological Structure Of An Orbifold By Its Group Of Orbifold Diffeomerphisms, Joseph E. Borzellino, Victor Brunsden

Mathematics

We show that the topological structure of a compact, locally smooth orbifold is determined by its orbifold diffeomorphism group. Let DiffrOrb (O) denote the Cr orbifold diffeomorphisms of an orbifold O. Suppose that Φ: DiffrOrb(O1) → DiffrOrb (O2) is a group isomorphism between the the orbifold diffeomorphism groups of two orbifolds O1 and O2. We show that Φ is induced by a homeomorphism h: XO1 → XO2 , where XO denotes the underlying topological …
