Entropy And Generalized Least Square Methods In Assessment Of The Regional Value Of Streamgages, Momcilo Markus, H. Vernon Knapp, Gary D. Tasker

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The Illinois State Water Survey performed a study to assess the streamgaging network in the State of Illinois. One of the important aspects of the study was to assess the regional value of each station through an assessment of the information transfer among gaging records for low, average, and high flow conditions. This analysis was performed for the main hydrologic regions in the State, and the stations were initially evaluated using a new approach based on entropy analysis. To determine the regional value of each station within a region, several information parameters, including total net information, were defined based on …

The Utility Of Dibels As A Curriculum Based Measurement In Relation To Reading Proficiency On High Stakes Tests, Rebecca Gayle Cook Jan 2003

The Utility Of Dibels As A Curriculum Based Measurement In Relation To Reading Proficiency On High Stakes Tests, Rebecca Gayle Cook

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of the current study was to investigate the relationship between the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills or DIBELS reading measures and the Stanford Achievement Test, Ninth Edition or SAT9 reading scores. The following research question was examined: What is the concurrent validity of the DIBELS reading measures in relation to students’ SAT9 reading scores? In this study, archival data from five firstgrade classrooms at a rural southeastern Ohio elementary school were collected. The results of the study indicated that there was a positive and significant correlation between DIBELS measures and SAT9 scores with the exception of …

University Technology Transfer And Economic Development: Proposed Cooperative Economic Development Agreements Under The Bayh Dole Act, Clovia Hamilton Jan 2003

University Technology Transfer And Economic Development: Proposed Cooperative Economic Development Agreements Under The Bayh Dole Act, Clovia Hamilton

Winthrop Faculty and Staff Publications

Technology transfer enables private industry and academia to make practical use of advanced research, development, and technical expertise. Indeed, universities are a rich source of science and technology that can support local government and business development as well as economic growth. Thus, it is essential for research universities to transfer their wisdom to the public for its use and benefit. Today, universities operate in an economic climate that requires both capital and knowledge; takes advantage of government technology initiatives (namely the Bayh- Dole Act);' and serves as a catalyst for the creation of a large number of new, incubated companies. …

Multiphoton Interaction In A System Of Two Quantum Dots, Brian Sawyer Jan 2003

Multiphoton Interaction In A System Of Two Quantum Dots, Brian Sawyer

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

As the size and proximity of components on modern computer chips approaches quantum mechanical limits, various novel solutions have been proposed to ensure further increases in processing speed and reliability. Of these, small semiconductor devices called quantum dots may constitute the logic gates of future quantum computers - processors taking advantage of phenomena such as entanglement and quantum teleportation to enable ultra-fast computation speeds. Quantum dots behave much like designer atoms in that their absorption/emission energies can be adjusted lo desired values. A quantum mechanical model of semiconductor quantum dots having equal size and interacting with a single-mode electric field …

Tetratricopeptide Repeat Motif-Mediated Hsc70-Msti1 Interaction Molecular Characterization Of The Critical Contacts For Successful Binding And Specificity*, Odutayo O. Odunuge, Judith A. Hornby, Chrisiane Bies, Richard Zimmermann, David J. Pugh, Gregory L. Blatch

Faculty Publications

Murine stress-inducible protein 1 (mSTI1) is a cochaperone that is homologous with the human Hsp70/ Hsp90-organizing protein (Hop). Guided by Hop structural data and sequence alignment analyses, we have used site-directed mutagenesis, co-precipitation assays, circular dichroism spectroscopy, steady-state fluorescence, and surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy to both qualitatively and quantitatively characterize the contacts necessary for the N-terminal tetratricopeptide repeat domain (TPR1) of mSTI1 to bind to heat shock cognate protein 70 (Hsc70) and to discriminate between Hsc70 and Hsp90. We have shown that substitutions in the first TPR motif of Lys8 or Asn12 did not affect binding of mSTI1 to Hsc70, …

Dendritic Surfactants Show Evidence For Frustrated Intercalation: A New Organoclay Morphology, Erick J. Acosta, Youjun Deng, G. Norman White, Joe B. Dixon, Kevin J. Mcinnes, Scott A. Senseman, Alyx S. Frantzen, Eric E. Simanek Jan 2003

Dendritic Surfactants Show Evidence For Frustrated Intercalation: A New Organoclay Morphology, Erick J. Acosta, Youjun Deng, G. Norman White, Joe B. Dixon, Kevin J. Mcinnes, Scott A. Senseman, Alyx S. Frantzen, Eric E. Simanek

Faculty Publications

Mixing a smectite clay with some dendritic surfactants shows that despite the large size of some of these molecules, a property that frustrates complete intercalation into the gallery of the clay, organoclay materials are obtained. X-ray powder diffraction (XPD) reveals no significant increases in lattice spacing as these surfactants are added. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) show that interlayer water is preserved. Consistent with an undisturbed interlayer, the amount of organic material in organoclays derived from frustrated surfactants does not exceed 15% of the cationic exchange capacity (CEC) of the composite. Smaller dendritic surfactants do not display …

Modeling Moving Droplets: A Precursor Film Approach, Benjamin Bryant Jan 2003

Modeling Moving Droplets: A Precursor Film Approach, Benjamin Bryant

HMC Senior Theses

We investigate the behavior of moving droplets and rivulets, driven by a combination of gravity and surface shear (wind). The problem is motivated by a desire to model the behavior of raindrops on aircraft wings. We begin with the Stokes equations and use the approximations of lubrication theory to derive the specific thin film equation relevant to our situation. This fourth-order partial differential equation describing the height of the fluid is then solved numerically from varying initial conditions, using a fully implicit discretization for time stepping, and a precursor film to avoid singularities at the drop contact line. Results describing …
