The Window Least Mean Square Error Algorithm, Anna Semenovna Degtyarena Jan 2003

The Window Least Mean Square Error Algorithm, Anna Semenovna Degtyarena

Theses Digitization Project

In order to improve the performance of LMS (least mean square) algorithm by decreasing the amount of calculations this research proposes to make an update on each step only for those elements from the input data set, that fall within a small window W near the separating hyperplane surface. This work aims to describe in detail the results that can be achieved by using the proposed LMS with window learning algorithm in information systems that employ the methodology of neural network for the purposes of classification.

Comparative Analysis Of Depression In Homeless Populations, Tsudoi Suzuki Jan 2003

Comparative Analysis Of Depression In Homeless Populations, Tsudoi Suzuki

Theses Digitization Project

The purpose of this project was to find out whether or not there were specific factors that made homeless people depressed. Finding depression factors will help to establish strategies and programs that would prevent homeless people from being depressed. The current study tested the hypothesis that basic needs and education are needed to help in factoring depression.

Is There A Difference Between Teacher Perceptions About Computer Lab Use In Developing Higher Order Thinking Skills And Actual Computer Lab Practices?, Eduardo David Gonzalez

Theses Digitization Project

This study surveyed 15 teachers from an elementary school in Southern California regarding their perceptions of their use of the computer lab as an educational tool to develop student higher order level thinking skills, and compared the results to the actual computer lab activities they assigned. Data regarding actual computer lab practices was collected over a period of one school year. This data was analyzed and categorized by using Bloom's Taxonomy descriptors. Each computer lab activity was scaled and given a value using these descriptors of higher order thinking skills. Results indicated a difference between teacher's perceptions and skills targetted …

Auditing Fair Value Measurements And Disclosures; Statement On Auditing Standards, 101, American Institute Of Certified Public Accountants. Auditing Standards Executive Committee

Statements on Auditing Standards

The purpose of this Statement is to establish standards and provide guidance on auditing fair value measurements and disclosures contained in financial statements. In particular, this Statement addresses audit considerations relating to the measurement and disclosure of assets, liabilities, and specific components of equity presented or disclosed at fair value in financial statements. Fair value measurements of assets, liabilities, and components of equity may arise from both the initial recording of transactions and later changes in value. Changes in fair value measurements that occur over time may be treated in different ways under generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). For example, …

The Effects Of Reflective Assessment On Student Achievement, John B. Bond Jan 2003

The Effects Of Reflective Assessment On Student Achievement, John B. Bond

Theses and Dissertations

Over the last decade alternative assessment strategies have become an important part of the debate regarding the reform and restructuring of American education. The purpose of assessment should be to improve student learning, which means it should be integral to the teaching and learning process. For this to occur, a seamlessness needs to exist between teaching, learning, and assessment through which students are empowered to take increased responsibility for their learning. Reflective assessment grows out of strong theoretical roots including ancient Greek thought, the philosophy of John Dewey, and cognitive constructivist learning theories. Reflective assessment is a formative process through …

Reactions Of Boranes And Metallaboranes With Phosphines, Lawrence Barton, Oleg Volkov, Mitsuhiro Hata, Paul Mcquade, Nigam Rath Jan 2003

Reactions Of Boranes And Metallaboranes With Phosphines, Lawrence Barton, Oleg Volkov, Mitsuhiro Hata, Paul Mcquade, Nigam Rath

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

This paper reports extensions of the well-established field of phosphine–borane chemistry. Linked clusters, for example, {[(PPh3)2(CO)OsB4H7-3-BH2-PPh2]2 [(Fe(C5H4)2]}, are formed in reactions of rigid backboned bidentate phosphines with {2,2,2-(PPh3)2(CO)-nido-2-OsB5H9]. Reaction of bidentate phosphines with the unsaturated clusters [8,8-PPh3)2-nido-8,7-RhSB9H10] and [9,9-(PPh3)2-nido-9,7,8-RhC2B8 H11] leads to the isolation of novel species such as {1-(PPh3)[1,3-(µ-dppm)]-closo -1,2-RhSB9H8},with a dppm molecule bridging adjacent metal and boron vertices in the cage, [1,1-(ç2-dppe)-3-(ç1-dppm)-closo-1,2-RhSB 9H8], a mixed ligand system, and {9,9-ç2-[(ç2-BH3)PPh2PCH2 PPh2]-nido- 9,7,8-RhC2B8H11} which contains a bidentate dppm BH3 moiety. The formation of bidentate phosphine-linked main group transition-metal moieties such as [BH3PPh2(CH)nPPh2IrCp*Cl2] is also described as is an example of …

Could Mammoth Cave Be Reduced To A Single Equation?, Chris Groves, Joe Meiman Jan 2003

Could Mammoth Cave Be Reduced To A Single Equation?, Chris Groves, Joe Meiman

Earth, Environmental, and Atmospheric Sciences Faculty Publications

Since the evolution of any cave system is largely deterministic, in theory the processes responsible for this development could be described mathematically. In a practical sense, we will never have such a model to realistically describe the evolution of the Mammoth Cave System in detail. However, the search itself can provide a framework within which to understand what processes areimportant. This can guide the design of rate process studies that would eventually be coupled to provide a comprehensive understanding of the cave's evolution. Data gaps, as well, are identified during this process. The geometry of a cave system depends on …

An Artificial Neural Network Approach To Learning From Factory Performance In A Kanban-Based System, Barry A. Wray, Ina S. Markham, Richard G. Mathieu Jan 2003

An Artificial Neural Network Approach To Learning From Factory Performance In A Kanban-Based System, Barry A. Wray, Ina S. Markham, Richard G. Mathieu

Journal of International Information Management

Many Just-In-Time (JIT) manufacturing environments generate operational data reflecting both efficient and inefficient factory performance. Frequently data for inefficient performance is lost or discarded for fear of replicating poor performance. The purpose of this paper is two fold. First, historical JIT shop data is analyzed using a genetic algorithm (GA) to determine which shop factors are important determinants offactory performance. Second, subsequent to these important factors being identified by a GA, an artificial neural network (ANN) is used to learn the relationships between these factors and factory performance. The ANN can then be used to predict factory performance for future …

Mining The Fx Electronic Inter-Dealer Market, Melody Lo, Chang T. Hsieh Jan 2003

Mining The Fx Electronic Inter-Dealer Market, Melody Lo, Chang T. Hsieh

Journal of International Information Management

This paper examines the feasibility of applying data mining techniques to testing market efficiency hypothesis using a high frequency, up to one thousand of a second, electronic brokerage data. Results suggest the existence of a pattern of negative autocorrelation in returns of DEM/USD over relative short lags (less than 40 seconds). However, this pattern is not feasible by two reasons: (1) the structure of autocorrelation pattern is inconsistent and changes too rapidly (2) the largest potential speculative profit is smaller than the regulated tick size. These results indicate that dealers have engaged in any potential profitable speculations based on past …
