Can We Compensate For Incompensable Harms?, Adi Ayal Dec 2003

Can We Compensate For Incompensable Harms?, Adi Ayal

San Diego Law Review

Compensating for harms is the bedrock of the practice of tort law. The hypothetical ideal of "making the victim whole" guides many a classroom discussion and judicial opinion. Yet we all know that his ideal is often unattainable for a variety of practical and conceptual reasons. Focusing on the conceptual issues, a question might be asked: Are we ever Really able to make the victim whole? In this Article, I aim to stress and develop the aspects of the argument I find most convincing, while critiquing others.

Spatial Frequency Response Of Acrylamide Based Holographic Photopolymer, Raghavendra Jallapuram, Izabela Naydenova, Vincent Toal, Suzanne Martin, Robert Howard Dec 2003

Spatial Frequency Response Of Acrylamide Based Holographic Photopolymer, Raghavendra Jallapuram, Izabela Naydenova, Vincent Toal, Suzanne Martin, Robert Howard

Conference Papers

It has been shown that photopolymers are useful in holographic optical elements [1] and holographic interferometry [2]. However, the list of potential applications increases greatly if reflection holography is possible. Reflection holography requires a material that has the potential to record high spatial frequencies. Here we studied the spatial frequency response of an acrylamide based dye sensitized holographic photopolymer. We have investigated the effect of molecular weight of the binder and concentration of crosslinking monomer on diffusion using real time monitoring of the holographic grating formation. The effect of uniform pre-exposure on diffusion was also investigated. We have also demonstrated …

Probing Scattering Wave Functions Close To The Nucleus, Don H. Madison, Daniel Fischer, Matthew S. Foster, Michael Schulz, Robert Moshammer, Stephenie J. Jones, Joachim Hermann Ullrich

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recently, three-dimensional imaging of the ejected electrons following 100  MeV/amu C6+ single ionization of helium led to the observation of a new structure not predicted by theory [M. Schulz et al., Nature (London) 422, 48 (2003)]. Instead of the usual “recoil lobe” centered on the momentum-transfer axis, a ring-shaped structure centered on the beam axis was observed. New measurements at 2  MeV/amu exhibit a similar structure, which is now predicted by theory. We argue that the same theory failed at 100  MeV/amu because the faster projectiles probe distances much closer to the nucleus, where our multiple-scattering model is expected …

Score Tests For Inverse Gaussian Mixture, Zhenlin Yang Dec 2003

Score Tests For Inverse Gaussian Mixture, Zhenlin Yang

Research Collection School Of Economics

The mixed inverse Gaussian given by Whitmore (Scand. J. Statist., 13, 1986, 211–220) provides a convenient way for testing the goodness-of-fit of a pure inverse Gaussian distribution. The test is a one-sided score test with the null hypothesis being the pure inverse Gaussian (i.e. the mixing parameter is zero) and the alternative a mixture. We devise a simple score test and study its finite sample properties. Monte Carlo results show that it compares favourably with the smooth test of Ducharme (Test, 10, 2001, 271-290). In practical applications, when the pure inverse Gaussian distribution is rejected, one is interested in making …

Information Recovery In A Study With Surrogate Endpoints, Song Xi Chen, Denis H. Y. Leung, Jing Qin Dec 2003

Information Recovery In A Study With Surrogate Endpoints, Song Xi Chen, Denis H. Y. Leung, Jing Qin

Research Collection School Of Economics

Recently, there has been a lot of interest in statistical methods for analyzing data with surrogate endpoints. In this article, we consider parameter estimation from a model that relates a variable Y to a set of covariates, X, in the presence of a surrogate, S. We assume that the data are made up of two random samples from the population, a validation set where (Y, X, S) are observed on every subject and a nonvalidation set where only (X, S) are measured. We show how information from the nonvalidation set can be incorporated to improve upon estimation of a parameter …

Predicting Nonlinear Network Traffic Using Fuzzy Neural Network, Zhaoxia Wang, Tingzhu Hao, Zengqiang Chen, Zhuzhi Yuan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Network traffic is a complex and nonlinear process, which is significantly affected by immeasurable parameters and variables. This paper addresses the use of the five-layer fuzzy neural network (FNN) for predicting the nonlinear network traffic. The structure of this system is introduced in detail. Through training the FNN using back-propagation algorithm with inertia] terms the traffic series can be well predicted by this FNN system. We analyze the performance of the FNN in terms of prediction ability as compared with solely neural network. The simulation demonstrates that the proposed FNN is superior to the solely neural network systems. In addition, …

Objectivity, Information, And Maxwell's Demon, Steven Weinstein Dec 2003

Objectivity, Information, And Maxwell's Demon, Steven Weinstein

Dartmouth Scholarship

This paper examines some common measures of complexity, structure, and information, with an eye toward understanding the extent to which complexity or information‐content may be regarded as objective properties of individual objects. A form of contextual objectivity is proposed which renders the measures objective, and which largely resolves the puzzle of Maxwell's Demon.

A Survey Of Student Term-Time Employment: Choosing Subpopulations For Further Study, Patrick Hughes, Bruce I. Mallette Dec 2003

A Survey Of Student Term-Time Employment: Choosing Subpopulations For Further Study, Patrick Hughes, Bruce I. Mallette

Journal of Student Financial Aid

Despite substantive research at the national level, local institutional information on students who work off campus while enrolled full time has been sparse. After considering the need for local studies examining the causes of term-time employment and employment's role in persistence, this research explores the appropriateness of using total student cohorts as opposed to subpopulations restricted to financial aid applicants. Distinguishing between residency groups is also considered. The analyses demonstrate that employment was locally substantial, persistence studies are best paired with total populations, and employment studies are best paired with populations restricted to students who have financial aid data on …

Second Thoughts: Toward A Critique Of The Digital Divide, David J. Gunkel Dec 2003

Second Thoughts: Toward A Critique Of The Digital Divide, David J. Gunkel

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

This article introduces critical perspective into the discussion of the digital divide, which is commonly defined as the gap separating those individuals who have access to new forms of information technology from those who do not. The analysis is distinguished from other undertakings addressing this matter, insofar as it does not document the empirical problems of unequal access but considers the terminology, logical structure, and form that define and direct work on this important social and ethical issue. The investigation employs the tools of critical theory and targets extant texts, reports, and studies. In this way, the analysis does not …

Parallaxes And Distance Estimates For 14 Cataclysmic Variable Stars, John R. Thorstensen Dec 2003

Parallaxes And Distance Estimates For 14 Cataclysmic Variable Stars, John R. Thorstensen

Dartmouth Scholarship

I used the 2.4 m Hiltner Telescope at MDM Observatory in an attempt to measure trigonometric parallaxes for 14 cataclysmic variable stars. Techniques are described in detail. In the best cases the parallax uncertainties are below 1 mas, and significant parallaxes are found for most of the program stars. A Bayesian method that combines the parallaxes together with proper motions and absolute magnitude constraints is developed and used to derive distance estimates and confidence intervals. The most precise distance derive here is for WZ Sge, for which I find 43: 3.1:6 1:5 pc. Six Luyten Half-Second stars with previous precise …

Nectar Rewards Of Insect-Adapted Flowers In A Forest/Farm Landscape: Measurement Challenges And Ecological Questions, Theresa Bordenkecher Dailey Dec 2003

Nectar Rewards Of Insect-Adapted Flowers In A Forest/Farm Landscape: Measurement Challenges And Ecological Questions, Theresa Bordenkecher Dailey

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Native forest wildflowers of the Midwestern United States forests now compete with agricultural weeds for the attention of insect pollinators. The tiny quantities of nectar secreted by these insect-pollinated flowers are measured using laboratory techniques such as colorimetry. However, these techniques are used with the tacit assumption that nectar sugar identity does not affect estimates of carbohydrate content. I tested this hypothesis using fructose, glucose, and sucrose and found that after reaction with anthrone, fructose products differed from those of other sugars in light absorbance measured by a spectrophotometer. Potential error from using an inappropriate sugar standard is greater than …

Dynamic Response Evaluation Of Fiber-Reinforced Composite Bridge Decks And Bridges, Chandra Sekhar Jinka Dec 2003

Dynamic Response Evaluation Of Fiber-Reinforced Composite Bridge Decks And Bridges, Chandra Sekhar Jinka

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composite bridge decks are gaining attention of bridge owners because of their light self weight, corrosion resistance and ease of installation. The lighter weight and lower stiffness of the FRP decks combined with the lower level of damping (than concrete) can lead to excessive deck vibrations and may substantially increase the dynamic amplification of induced stress and deflections. Also, a global NDE technique using dynamic characterization is necessary to ensure the long term performance of FRP bridges. Therefore, an extensive study on FRP decks and FRP bridges is carried out both at laboratory and in the …

The scope of this research involves the first known effort at designing a highly detailed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model to characterize the flow fields with the UL Smoke Box and a spot type smoke detector within the test section of the smoke box. The proposed CFD model, designed to reflect the same measured conditions in the UL Smoke Box, was developed and validated through experimental velocity data using laser Doppler and hot-wire anemometry. With excellent qualitative comparisons between experimental and computational results, flow characterization using the laminar flow model available in the commercial software package FluentRTM was sufficiently achieved. …

Comparison Of Classification Methods For Perspiration-Based Liveness Algorithm, Sujan T. V. Parthasaradhi Dec 2003

Comparison Of Classification Methods For Perspiration-Based Liveness Algorithm, Sujan T. V. Parthasaradhi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the modern world there is a need for security. Biometric technologies provide a means for providing this security. Of the many different available biometric technologies, fingerprint recognition is the most popular. As with all security measures, biometric devices may be subject to attacks on the system. Fingerprint scanners may be susceptible to spoofing using artificial materials, or in the worst case, dismembered fingers. Liveness, i.e. to determine whether the introduced biometric is coming from a live source, has been suggested as a means to circumvent attacks that use spoof fingers. It has been shown that water based casting materials …

Finite Element Damage Modeling Of Plain Weave Fabrics, Kaarthik K. Sikkil Dec 2003

Finite Element Damage Modeling Of Plain Weave Fabrics, Kaarthik K. Sikkil

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Plain weave fabrics are used as reinforcements in composites in order to obtain improved inter-laminar properties. But these advantages are at the cost of reduced stiffness and strength in the in-plane directions. Therefore, it is important to study the mechanical behavior of such composites. In this work, the geometrical model needed for finite element discretization of the plain weave fabrics are developed for three configurations---single lamina, iso-phase, and out-of-phase. Next, a procedure to determine the longitudinal elastic modulus under tensile loading is presented. Then, a meso level damage model is used for predicting the inelastic tensile behavior of the fabrics. …

Potential Field Theory And Its Applications To Classical Mechanical Problems, Shannon Rae Stillwagon Dec 2003

Potential Field Theory And Its Applications To Classical Mechanical Problems, Shannon Rae Stillwagon

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Advances in many scientific fields are expected to come from work in nanotechnology. Engineering at nano-scales presents novel problems that classical mechanics cannot solve. Many engineers are uncomfortable designing at this level because classical or continuum mechanics does not apply and quantum mechanics is said to apply in a tangible way. There are unique opportunities to contribute to the design, controls, and analysis of systems that are particularly suited to mechanical engineering. Within the derivations of classical mechanics are assumptions that limit its use to bulk engineering. These assumptions are examined to determine what principles can be extended to smaller …

Architecture-Level Risk Assessment Tool Based On Uml Specification, Tianjian Wang Dec 2003

Architecture-Level Risk Assessment Tool Based On Uml Specification, Tianjian Wang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Most faults in software systems are likely to be found in only a few of components [1]. The early identification of these components allows the project management to focus on remedial actions, such as redesigning the critical components that are likely to cause field failures or optimally allocating resources on implementation and testing [2]. This thesis presents a prototype tool called Architecture-level Risk Assessment Tool (ARAT) to demonstrate the process of risk assessment. The final result of this process is to distinguish those potentially high risk components in the software system. ARAT is built on the risk assessment methodology [3]. …

Hybrid Neural Networks Models For A Membrane Reactor, Mohammed Al-Yemni Dec 2003

Hybrid Neural Networks Models For A Membrane Reactor, Mohammed Al-Yemni

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Artificial neural networks (ANN) have become an established discipline and have gained extensive interest within chemical engineering. In recent years, research effort has focused on the use of "hybrid artificial neural networks" (HANN) models that combine both the deterministic and the ANN elements. Several methods have been proposed for combining ANN with first principle relations. In this thesis, a new hybrid scheme, which is similar to that developed by Kasprow for a space-independent and time-dependent fed-batch microbial reactor, was developed for a space-dependent steady-state enzymatic reactor. This scheme combines ANN with mass balances and assumed rate expressions. It was shown …

Spline Based Controller For Nonlinear Systems, Ali Karimi Dec 2003

Spline Based Controller For Nonlinear Systems, Ali Karimi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The objective of this thesis is to apply spline theory to implement controllers for nonlinear systems. Two different systems, forced Duffing oscillators and power systems, are investigated. The spline method is used to mimic the controller which drives a state of the Duffing system toward a desired path. The spline-based nonlinear controller has piecewise polynomial segments with different order of polynomials on each segment. Controller efforts for different order of polynomial interpolants and power spectral densities of the controller signals are compared with the exact feedback linearizaton method.;The first objective for power systems is to design nonlinear excitation controllers for …
