Interactive Topographic Web Mapping Using Scalable Vector Graphics, Peter Pavlicko Dec 2003

Interactive Topographic Web Mapping Using Scalable Vector Graphics, Peter Pavlicko

Student Work

Large scale topographic maps portray detailed information about the landscape. They are used for a wide variety o f purposes. USGS large scale topographic maps at 1:24,000 have been traditionally distributed in paper form. With the advent of the Internet, these maps can now be distributed electronically. Instead of common raster format presentation, the solution presented here is based on a vector approach. The vector format provides many advantages compared to the use of a raster-based presentation. This research shows that Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) is a promising technology for delivering high quality interactive topographic maps via the Internet, both …

Bowyer, Jenni L. Evans, Deborah E. Hanley, Barry N. Hanstrum, Robert E. Hart, Francois Lalaurette, Mark R. Sinclair, Roger K. Smith, Chris Thorncroft

Applied Aviation Sciences - Prescott

A significant number of tropical cyclones move into the midlatitudes and transform into extratropical cyclones. This process is generally referred to as extratropical transition (ET). During ET a cyclone frequently produces intense rainfall and strong winds and has increased forward motion, so that such systems pose a serious threat to land and maritime activities. Changes in the structure of a system as it evolves from a tropical to an extratropical cyclone during ET necessitate changes in forecast strategies. In this paper a brief climatology of ET is given and the challenges associated with forecasting extratropical transition are described in terms …

Meta-Inquiry: An Approach To Interview Success, Nancy M. Carlson, Mark Mccaslin Dec 2003

Meta-Inquiry: An Approach To Interview Success, Nancy M. Carlson, Mark Mccaslin

The Qualitative Report

Developing an effective interview strategy presents unique challenges for the novice and master researcher for if the questions one asks are not crucial, then differences in responses are not crucial either (Creswell, 1998, p. 335). To focus qualitative research in the human ecology of the study, our strategy uses an initial interview protocol and preanalysis process, called meta-inquiry, prior to developing our formal interview protocol. Meta-inquiry of initial interview data, obtained in dialogue with key informants in the researched culture, provides us with an inductive tool to assess, modify, enhance, and focus the formal interview protocol. Thus, preparing for the …

Understanding Reliability And Validity In Qualitative Research, Nahid Golafshani Dec 2003

Understanding Reliability And Validity In Qualitative Research, Nahid Golafshani

The Qualitative Report

The use of reliability and validity are common in quantitative research and now it is reconsidered in the qualitative research paradigm. Since reliability and validity are rooted in positivist perspective then they should be redefined for their use in a naturalistic approach. Like reliability and validity as used in quantitative research are providing springboard to examine what these two terms mean in the qualitative research paradigm, triangulation as used in quantitative research to test the reliability and validity can also illuminate some ways to test or maximize the validity and reliability of a qualitative study. Therefore, reliability, validity and triangulation, …

A Modeling Experiment On The Grounding Of An Ice Shelf In The Central Arctic Ocean During Mis 6, Martin Jakobsson, M Siegert, Mark Paton Dec 2003

A Modeling Experiment On The Grounding Of An Ice Shelf In The Central Arctic Ocean During Mis 6, Martin Jakobsson, M Siegert, Mark Paton

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

High-resolution chirp sonar subbottom profiles from the Lomonosov Ridge in the central Arctic Ocean, acquired from the Swedish icebreaker Oden in 1996, revealed large-scale erosion of the ridge crest down to depths of 1000 m below present sea level [Jakobsson, 1999]. Subsequent acoustic mapping during the SCICEX nuclear submarine expedition in 1999 showed glacial fluting at the deepest eroded areas and subparallel ice scours from 950 m water depth to the shallowest parts of the ridge crest [Polyak et al., 2001]. The directions of the mapped glaciogenic bed-forms and the redeposition of eroded material on the Amerasian side of the …

To Pester Or Leave Alone: Lifetime Value Maximization Through Optimal Communication Timing, Xavier Dreze, Andre Bonfrer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The marketing literature has long acknowledged the importance of a customer’s lifetime value in customer relationship management. More recently, researchers have turned their attention to the links between satisfaction and both customer acquisition and retention strategies. In this paper, we are interested in understanding the impact of communication frequency on customer retention and ultimately on lifetime value. We develop a theoretical framework for managing a customer database and addressing the tradeoffs between value extraction and customer retention. An empirical application of this framework is conducted for permission-based email marketing in the entertainment industry. This application recognizes the customization ability underlying …

All underground coal mines in the United States install roof bolts with a roof bolter as the primary means of supporting the mine roof. Proper application of roof bolting is dependent upon knowledge of the mine roof geology.;Recently developed control and data acquisition technologies allow the drilling performance of these roof bolters to be monitored on a real-time basis. Drilling data collected from these machines can be used to determine geological features present in the mine roof. A J. H. Fletcher & …

Analysis Of A Curved Buoyant Jet In An Enclosure Using Les, Allen E. Badeau Jr. Dec 2003

Analysis Of A Curved Buoyant Jet In An Enclosure Using Les, Allen E. Badeau Jr.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The objective of this study is to investigate curved buoyant jets in an enclosure using Large Eddy Simulation (LES) methods with an Implicit Turbulent Model (ITM). To accomplish this goal, a numerical solver was written, named DREAMRTM, which is capable of solving three dimensional, transient flows using an accurate monotonic and non-oscillatory upwinding scheme. The three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are solved in Cartesian coordinates, with the control volume approach being implemented on a staggered grid. The numerical scheme uses a fractional time step method, with the overall spatial and temporal accuracy being second order.;In ITM simulations, there is no explicit subgrid-scale …

Masters

A simple one-dimensional photonic bandgap structure, which is also known as a Fabry-Perot Microcavity (FPM) structure was studied theoretically and experimentally. In particular this project addressed introducing an optically birefringent material in the cavity. This FPM consists of two grown regular Distributed Bragg Reflector (DBR) mirrors that can be put together as a sandwich with a space between them, which will lead to the creation of the desired cavity. Each mirror, or one-dimensional dielectric stack structure, was grown using the Vacuum Evaporation Technique and consists of multiple layers of alternating high-and low-refractive index dielectric materials arranged periodically. The project covers …

Multiple Uav Cooperative Search Under Collision Avoidance And Limited Range Communication Constraints, Randal W. Beard, Timothy W. Mclain

Faculty Publications

This paper focuses on the problem of cooperatively searching, using a team of unmanned air vehicles (UAVs), an area of interest that contains regions of opportunity and regions of potential hazard. The objective of the UAV team is to visit as many opportunities as possible, while avoiding as many hazards as possible. To enable cooperation, the UAVs are constrained to stay within communication range of one another. Collision avoidance is also required. Algorithms for team-optimal and individually-optimal/team-suboptimal solutions are developed and their computational complexity compared. Simulation results demonstrating the feasibility of the cooperative search algorithms are presented.

The Role Of Facial Pits In The Thermoregulatory Behavior Of Pitvipers (Viperidae: Crotalinae) Behavioral, Ecological And Phylogenetic Perspectives, Aaron R. Krochmal Dec 2003

The Role Of Facial Pits In The Thermoregulatory Behavior Of Pitvipers (Viperidae: Crotalinae) Behavioral, Ecological And Phylogenetic Perspectives, Aaron R. Krochmal

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pitvipers (Viperidae: Crotalinae) possess unique sensory organs, the facial pits, capable of sensing subtle fluctuations in thermal radiation. Prey acquisition has long been regarded as the sole function of the facial pits. However, the ability to sense thermal radiation could also direct thermoregulatory behavior by remotely sensing nearby surface temperatures. Using a series ofbehavioral arenas of varying spatial complexity and ecological relevance, I surveyed the ability of western diamondback rattlesnakes (Crotalus atrox) to direct successful thermoregulatory movements with either functional or disabled facial pits. I found that western diamondback rattlesnakes could base thermoregulatory decisions on thermal radiation cues when their …

Hand Rule Damages For Incompensable Losses, Robert Cooter Dec 2003

Hand Rule Damages For Incompensable Losses, Robert Cooter

San Diego Law Review

Courts should develop theory and practice of damages for incompensable losses based on the response of reasonable people to daily risks. Specifically, courts should compute damages based on the reasonable person's point of indifference between less risk and more expenditure on precaution. The Hand rule describes this point of indifference.
