Immobilization Of Fission Iodine By Reaction With A Fullerene Containing Carbon Compound And Insoluble Natural Organic Matrix: Quarterly Report April-June 2003, Spencer M. Steinberg Jun 2003

Immobilization Of Fission Iodine By Reaction With A Fullerene Containing Carbon Compound And Insoluble Natural Organic Matrix: Quarterly Report April-June 2003, Spencer M. Steinberg

Separations Campaign (TRP)

The recovery of iodine released during the processing of used nuclear fuel poses a significant challenge to the transmutation of radioactive iodine. This proposal will develop and examine the use of Fullerene Containing Carbon (FCC) compounds as potential sorbents for iodine release from the reprocessing of nuclear fuel. This work will also include the development of bench-scale testing capabilities at UNLV to allow the testing of the FCC material in a simulated process off-gas environment. This experimental capability will also be used to test other potential sorption materials and processes, such as natural organic matter (NOM) and other promising alternatives. …

Wigner Distribution Function Approach To Dissipative Problems In Quantum Mechanics With Emphasis On Decoherence And Measurement Theory, R. F. O'Connell Jun 2003

Wigner Distribution Function Approach To Dissipative Problems In Quantum Mechanics With Emphasis On Decoherence And Measurement Theory, R. F. O'Connell

Faculty Publications

We first review the usefulness of the Wigner distribution functions (WDFs), associated with Lindblad and pre-master equations, for analysing a host of problems in quantum optics where dissipation plays a major role, an arena where weak coupling and long-time approximations are valid. However, we also show their limitations for the discussion of decoherence, which is generally a short-time phenomenon with decay rates typically much smaller than typical dissipative decay rates. We discuss two approaches to the problem both of which use a quantum Langevin equation as a starting-point: (a) use of a reduced WDF but in the context of an …

Two twisted 1,2-bis(2-pyridyl)ethyne ligands bridge two Cd2+ centers in the C2-symmetric title complex, [Cd2(NO3)4(-C12H8N2)2(H2O)2]. The bridging ligands arch across one another creating a `zigzag loop' molecular geometry. Two nitrate ions and a water molecule complete the irregular seven-coordinate Cd-atom environment. The dihedral angles between the equivalent pyridyl ring planes of the two independent ligands are 67.2 (1)°. Owater-HOnitrate hydrogen bonding creates two-dimensional layers parallel to the ab plane.

Validation Of The A Posteriori Error Estimator Based On Polynomial Preserving Recovery For Linear Elements, Zhimin Zhang, Ahmed Naga

Mathematics Research Reports

In this paper the quality of the error estimator based on the Polynomial Preserving Recovery (PPR) is investigated using the computer-based approach proposed by Babiiska et al. A comparison is made between the error estimator based on the PPR and the one based on the Superconvergence Patch Recovery (SPR). It was found that the PPR is at least as good as the SPR.

Comment On "Performance Of Different Synchronization Measures In Real Data: A Case Study On Electroencephalographic Signals", R. B. Duckrow, Alfonso M. Albano

Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship

Quian Quiroga [Phys. Rev. E 65, 041903 (2002)] reported a similar performance of several linear and nonlinear measures of synchronization when applied to the rat electrocorticogram (ECoG). However, they found that the mutual information measure did not produce robust estimates of synchronization when compared to other measures. We reexamined their data using a histogram method with adaptive partitioning and found the mutual information to be a useful measure of regional ECoG interdependence.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Double ionization of helium by 6 MeV proton impact has been explored in a kinematically complete experiment using a “reaction microscope.” For the first time, fully differential cross sections for positively charged projectiles have been obtained and compared with data from 2 keV electron impact. The significant differences observed in the angular distribution of the ejected electrons are attributed to the charge sign of the projectile, resulting in different dynamics of the four-particle Coulomb system, which is not considered in the first Born approximation.

Accounting Dissertations

Al Maqam-AI Saad area is located to the west of Al Ain city on Al Ain-Abu Dhabi Highway. This area was chosen to be studied because of the rapid decline of the water levels in the shallow aquifer as a result of continuous heavy withdrawal of the Ground water. In 1990-1991, the area was recognized as one of the major ground Water depressions in the Eastern Region where more than 40 meters of draw down Were noted in the center of depression. The objective of this study is to determine the Hydraulic status of the aquifer by means of characterization …

Liberal Hegemony - School Vouchers And The Future Of The Race, Harry G. Hutchison Jun 2003

Liberal Hegemony - School Vouchers And The Future Of The Race, Harry G. Hutchison

Missouri Law Review

This Article examines the school voucher debate. Because “the causes of poverty within the black community are both structural and behavioral,” and because the available evidence provides an inferential connection between education and poverty, I contend that the reigning legal and political theory as embedded in, and as explicated by the constitutional jurisprudence of the Zelman dissenters, and as exemplified by other commentators, fails to address adequately racial disparity and neglects to consider adequately the victims of the current public school hegemony. Hence, the legitimacy of much of the current opposition to school vouchers remains indefensible form an outsider perspective.

Texture Classification Using Transform Analysis, Mary Habib Jun 2003

Texture Classification Using Transform Analysis, Mary Habib

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The work presented in this thesis deals with the application of spectral methods for texture classification. The aim of the present work is to introduce a hybrid methodology for texture classification based on a spatial domain global pre-classifier together with a spectral classifier that utilizes multiresolution transform analysis. The reason for developing a spatial pre-classifier is that many discriminating features of textures are present in the spatial domain of the texture. Of these, global features such as intensity histograms and entropies can still add significant information to the texture classification process. The pre-classifier uses texture intensity histograms to derive histogram …

A New Message-Based Protocol For Building A Platform And Language Independent Distributed Object Model, Hazem S. El Ashmawi Jun 2003

A New Message-Based Protocol For Building A Platform And Language Independent Distributed Object Model, Hazem S. El Ashmawi

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Standardization of messaging topologies for communication in recent distributed object computing architectures is becoming more and more inevitable. The emergence of a structured and flexible document model as XML has made an entry point towards this goal. In this thesis, we are utilizing the flexibility of XML and the simplicity of low -level socket communication to build a generalized messaging model that provides a basis for standardization and supports interoperability among existing distributed object computing architectures. The proposed system is composed of the basic components of a distributed architecture constituting a number of broker components acting as naming services and …

Dynamic Joint Action Perception For Q-Learning Agents, Nancy Fulda, Dan A. Ventura Jun 2003

Dynamic Joint Action Perception For Q-Learning Agents, Nancy Fulda, Dan A. Ventura

Faculty Publications

Q-learning is a reinforcement learning algorithm that learns expected utilities for state-action transitions through successive interactions with the environment. The algorithm's simplicity as well as its convergence properties have made it a popular algorithm for study. However, its non-parametric representation of utilities limits its effectiveness in environments with large amounts of perceptual input. For example, in multiagent systems, each agent may need to consider the action selections of its counterparts in order to learn effective behaviors. This creates a joint action space which grows exponentially with the number of agents in the system. In such situations, the Q-learning algorithm quickly …

Nonlinear Dynamics Indicates Aging Affects Variability During Gait, Ugo H. Buzzi, Nikolaos Stergiou, Max J. Kurz, Patricia A. Hageman, Jack Heidel

Journal Articles

Objective. To investigate the nature of variability present in time series generated from gait parameters of two different age groups via a nonlinear analysis.

Design. Measures of nonlinear dynamics were used to compare kinematic parameters between elderly and young females.

Background. Aging may lead to changes in motor variability during walking, which may explain the large incidence of falls in the elderly.

Methods. Twenty females, 10 younger (20–37 yr) and 10 older (71–79 yr) walked on a treadmill for 30 consecutive gait cycles. Time series from selected kinematic parameters of the right lower extremity were analyzed using nonlinear dynamics. The …

Flow And Pressure Distributions In Vascular Networks Consisting Of Distensible Vessels, Gary S. Krenz, Christopher A. Dawson Jun 2003

Flow And Pressure Distributions In Vascular Networks Consisting Of Distensible Vessels, Gary S. Krenz, Christopher A. Dawson

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

We examine the influence of vessel distensibility on the fraction of the total network flow passing through each vessel of a model vascular network. An exact computational methodology is developed yielding an analytic proof. For a class of structurally heterogeneous asymmetric vascular networks, if all the individual vessels share a common distensibility relation when the total network flow is changed, this methodology proves that each vessel will continue to receive the same fraction of the total network flow. This constant flow partitioning occurs despite a redistribution of pressures, which may result in a decrease in the diameter of one and …

Adding Semantics To Web Services Standards, Kaarthik Sivashanmugam, Kunal Verma, Amit P. Sheth, John Miller

Kno.e.sis Publications

With the increasing growth in popularity of Web services, discovery of relevant Web services becomes a significant challenge. One approach is to develop semantic Web services where by the Web services are annotated based on shared ontologies, and use these annotations for semantics-based discovery of relevant Web services. We discuss one such approach that involves adding semantics to WSDL using DAML+OIL ontologies. Our approach also uses UDDI to store these semantic annotations and search for Web services based on them. We compare our approach with another initiative to add semantics to support Web service discovery, and show how our approach …

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency And Reduced Light Speeds For Single Photons In A Fully Quantized Model, Thomas Purdy, Martin Ligare Jun 2003

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency And Reduced Light Speeds For Single Photons In A Fully Quantized Model, Thomas Purdy, Martin Ligare

Faculty Journal Articles

We introduce a simple model for electromagnetically induced transparency in which all fields are treated quantum mechanically. We study a system of three separated atoms at fixed positions in a one-dimensional multimode optical cavity. The first atom serves as the source for a single spontaneously emitted photon; the photon scatters from a three-level lambda-configuration atom which interacts with an additional single-mode field coupling two of the atomic levels; the third atom serves as a detector of the total transmitted field. We find an analytical solution for the quantum dynamics. From the quantum amplitude describing the excitation of the detector atom …
