Chemistry Faculty Publications

Explicit solvent and counterion molecular dynamics simulations have been carried out for a total of > 80 ns on the bacterial and spinach chloroplast 5S rRNA Loop E motifs. The Loop E sequences form unique duplex architectures composed of seven consecutive non-Watson-Crick basepairs. The starting structure of spinach chloroplast Loop E was modeled using isostericity principles, and the simulations refined the geometries of the three non-Watson-Crick basepairs that differ from the consensus bacterial sequence. The deep groove of Loop E motifs provides unique sites for cation binding. Binding of Mg2+ rigidifies Loop E and stabilizes its major groove at an intermediate …

Thickness Dependence Of Magnetic Blocking In Granular Thin Films, Scott Whittenburg Jun 2003

Thickness Dependence Of Magnetic Blocking In Granular Thin Films, Scott Whittenburg

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Interparticle interaction among single domain nanosize magnetic particles embedded in nonmagnetic matrix was studied. Attention was paid to concentrated Cu–Co granular thin films with a fixed magnetic volume fraction 20%. By analyzing theoretical models and comparing with experimental results, a dimensional constraint on the magnetic properties was found. As the film thickness reduces toward the thin limit the interparticle interaction plays important roles in modifying the magnetic behavior. The dipolar interaction energy was calculated among magnetic particles including far-neighbor interaction for films with different thickness values. When magnetization variation is included in the calculation, the resulting calculated interaction energy versus …

Understanding On Concepts Of Force Of Thai Freshmen, Chokchai Usawinchai Jun 2003

Understanding On Concepts Of Force Of Thai Freshmen, Chokchai Usawinchai

Dissertations

The central concept of Newtonian mechanics is force. Without this concept, the students would find the rest of mechanics very difficult to master. Based on this hypothesis, the understandings and misconceptions of Newtonian mechanics were investigated.

Three hundred eighteen Thai freshmen participated in this study. The freshmen were divided into two groups according to their high school locations, Bangkok and other cities of Thailand. The Force Concept Inventory was used to probe the freshmen's understandings and misconceptions. The SPSS and EXCEL programs were used to analyze the data. The translation of the FCI into Thai and its subsequent validation is …

A Comparison Of Different Schemes For Selecting And Estimating Score Functions Based On Residuals, Ali A. Al-Shomrani Jun 2003

A Comparison Of Different Schemes For Selecting And Estimating Score Functions Based On Residuals, Ali A. Al-Shomrani

Dissertations

In a linear model when the errors follow a normal distribution, least squares methodology is most powerful. However, when the assumption of normality of the error distribution is not met then there exist methods which are more powerful than least squares methods. Rank-based methods form one such class. These methods depend on the selection of a score function [varphi]( u ). The correct choice of [varphi] leads to an optimal (efficient) analysis, but its selection depends on the error distribution which is not known.

In this thesis, we explore different schemes for score selection. Some of these schemes are functions …

Cellular Proliferation, Death And Histology In Gambusia Affinis Livers After Exposure To 2-Aminofluorene And Benzidine, Susan J. Lentz

Dissertations

A fundamental need exists for aquatic animals in the biomonitoring of aquatic ecosystems for environmental carcinogens. G. affinis, a small fish species, is selected for this study due to its hardiness, non-migratory nature, geographic diversity and ability to develop tumors. Molecular tools for cellular proliferation and death are examined for use with G. affinis. Additionally, these tools are used to investigate the early carcinogenic effects of 2-aminofluorene and benzidine, both individually and combined, on G. affinis livers.

Antibodies to proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), p53, cleaved caspase-3 and cleaved poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) were examined for use in G. …

New Graphical Approach On The Analysis Of Experimental Data, Suha Sari Jun 2003

New Graphical Approach On The Analysis Of Experimental Data, Suha Sari

Dissertations

This study presents a new graphical method to identify significant effects in factorial experiments. The proposed methods are obtained for the different cases in which the design can be of full factorial or fractional factorial and the factor levels can be pure or mixed.

We focus on the different decomposition methods, for example orthogonal components system and orthogonal contrast method, to make use of the chisquare plot which requires that the sums of squares are of the same degrees of freedom. Examples and simulations illustrating the different cases of the procedure are presented.

Masters Theses

In 1998 the Neolithic archaeological site of Bawwab al-Ghazal (ca. 11,500- 7,500 BP) was excavated by a team of researchers from the University of California, Riverside and Whitman College. Among the many artifacts recovered from the site, ranging from stone and shell beads to stone tools and related debitage, were an abundant sample of bird bones. Excavators shipped the sample, consisting of some 407 specimens, to the Anthropology Department of Western Michigan University for a faunal analysis.

This study seeks to illustrate the importance of bird remains in the archaeological record. The avifaunal analysis of Bawwab al-Ghazal began with identifying …

Repetition Of Retention Practices: Does Retention Improve Academic Achievement?, Brenda Demar-Williams Jun 2003

Repetition Of Retention Practices: Does Retention Improve Academic Achievement?, Brenda Demar-Williams

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

In 1996, the Chicago Board of Education adopted a new promotion policy to address the issue of low academic achievement and to hold schools accountable for the progress of its students. This policy led to many students being retained in grade, some are retained multiple times. Retention was supposed to offer remediation and bring students up to grade level criteria. This has not happened. Thus, the major purpose of this study was to determine if retention had a statistically significant effect on the reading and mathematics achievement scores of third grade students as measured by the Iowa Test of Basic …

Retention: The Controversy Continues, Beverly Gray Greene

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate and determine if there existed significant differences in the mathematics and reading achievement levels of students (n = 8) who were retained in sixth grade and their promoted seventh grade counterparts (n = 8), as measured by grade equivalent (GEQ) scores earned on the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS). The study also sought to discover if being retained raised the academic achievement levels of the retained students. Finally, the study explored the relationship between retention and self-concept using the Student Self-concept Rating Scale (SSCRS).

Both quantitative and qualitative methodology and analyses …

A Bounded Rationality Analysis Of The Cyprus Problem, Birol Yesilada, Jacek Kugler, Harry Anastasiou, Ahmet Sozen, Brian Efird

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The time frame for a final decision on the Cyprus problem is narrowing very rapidly. The latest peace plan proposed by the U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan, known as the Annan Plan, to solve the problem between the Greek Cypriot (G/Cs) and Turkish Cypriot (T/Cs) communities underwent the last refinements in February 2003 to bridge the gap between the two sides. Yet, despite intense domestic (especially in the Turkish north) and international pressures on the two sides to sign the agreement the Turkish Cypriot leadership rejected the proposal as being insufficient in meeting their demands. Despite the apparent low in …

We consider the problem of intrusion analysis and present the Kerf toolkit, whose purpose is to provide an efficient and flexible infrastructure for the analysis of attacks. The Kerf toolkit includes a mechanism for securely recording host and network logging information for a network of workstations, a domain-specific language for querying this stored data, and an interface for viewing the results of such a query, providing feedback on these results, and generating new queries in an iterative fashion. We describe the architecture of Kerf in detail, present examples to demonstrate the power of our query language, and discuss the performance …

Localized Ferromagnetic Resonance In Inhomogeneous Thin Films, R. D. Mcmichael, D. J. Twisselmann, Andrew Kunz Jun 2003

Localized Ferromagnetic Resonance In Inhomogeneous Thin Films, R. D. Mcmichael, D. J. Twisselmann, Andrew Kunz

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

The effect of sample inhomogeneity on the ferromagnetic resonance linewidth is determined by diagonalization of a spin wave Hamiltonian for ferromagnetic thin films with inhomogeneities spanning a wide range of characteristic length scales. A model inhomogeneity is used that consist of size D grains and an anisotropy field Hp that varies randomly from grain to grain in a film with thickness d and magnetization Ms. The resulting linewidth agrees well with the two-magnon model for small inhomogeneity, HpD « πMsd. For large inhomogeneity, HpD » πMsd the precession …

Morphological Biosignatures And The Search For Life On Mars, Sherry L. Cady, Jack D. Farmer, John P. Grotzinger, J. William Schopf, Andrew Steele Jun 2003

Morphological Biosignatures And The Search For Life On Mars, Sherry L. Cady, Jack D. Farmer, John P. Grotzinger, J. William Schopf, Andrew Steele

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

This report provides a rationale for the advances in instrumentation and understanding needed to assess claims of ancient and extraterrestrial life made on the basis of morphological biosignatures. Morphological biosignatures consist of bona fide microbial fossils as well as microbially influenced sedimentary structures. To be recognized as evidence of life, microbial fossils must contain chemical and structural attributes uniquely indicative of microbial cells or cellular or extracellular processes. When combined with various research strategies, high-resolution instruments can reveal such attributes and elucidate how morphological fossils form and become altered, thereby improving the ability to recognize them in the geological record …
