Three-Dimensional Model Of Modern Channel Bend Deposits, M. Bayani Cardenas, Vitaly A. Zlotnik Jun 2003

Three-Dimensional Model Of Modern Channel Bend Deposits, M. Bayani Cardenas, Vitaly A. Zlotnik

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

We present a three-dimensional model of heterogeneous modern channel bend deposits developed through purely structure-imitating interpolation (kriging) of hydraulic properties. This model, augmented with ground-penetrating radar data and directional variograms, agrees with detailed observations in similar modern environments and leads to a process-based interpretation of the presented hydraulic conductivity structure. Integration of all available information permitted delineation and characterization of the modern streambed as a distinct hydrostratigraphic unit without coring or outcrop studies. Our results imply that the modern streambed is commonly oversimplified in available analytical and numerical models of groundwater-surface water interactions where it is assumed to be homogeneous …

A Mathematical Commentary On Xenophon, Hellenika 2.1.25, 5.3.5 And Thucydides 3.2, Thomas Nelson Winter

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

In Greek antiquity, gravity, actuated by archers on city walls, turned many a tide, as victorious besiegers routed a city's land forces, but in the excitement of pursuit, got too close to the city walls! Xenophon presents one such instance as but the most recent of many cases, in relating the death of Teleutias.

The bow, among the Greeks, was the principal weapon for the city besieged. The bow being so effective in this situation explains why the an early advance in ancient siege machinery was the movable tower. It is an anti-gravity machine! Its purpose was to zero out …

Aquifer Characterization And Quantitative Assessment Of Over Exploitation Of The Shallow Aquifer In Ai Maqam Ai Saad Area The Eastern Region, Abu Dhabi Emirate, Ismail Mohammed Hamad Ai 8adi

Accounting Dissertations

Al Maqam-AI Saad area is located to the west of Al Ain city on Al Ain-Abu Dhabi

Highway. This area was chosen to be studied because of the rapid decline of the

water level in the shallow aquifer as a result of continuous heavy withdrawal of the

ground water. In 1990-1991, the area was recognized as one of the major ground

water depressions in the Eastern Region where more than 40 meters of draw down

were noted in the center of depression . The objective of this study is to determine the

hydraulic status of the aquifer by means of …

Peatland Responses To Varying Interannual Moisture Conditions As Measured By Automatic Co2 Chambers, Jill L. Bubier, P Crill, Steve Frolking, Ernst Linder, Andrew Mosedale Jun 2003

Peatland Responses To Varying Interannual Moisture Conditions As Measured By Automatic Co2 Chambers, Jill L. Bubier, P Crill, Steve Frolking, Ernst Linder, Andrew Mosedale

Earth Sciences

Net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE) was measured from June 2000 through October 2001 by 10 automatic chambers at a peatland in southeastern New Hampshire. The high temporal frequency of this sampling method permitted detailed examination of NEE as it varied daily and seasonally. Summer of 2001 was significantly drier than the 30-year average, while summer of 2000 was wetter than normal. Although NEE varied spatially across the peatland with differences in plant species composition and biomass, maximum CO2 uptake was 30–40% larger in the drier summer in evergreen and deciduous shrub communities but the same or lower in …

It also discusses the broader impact of these activities on various levels of students. The activities can be categorized in three levels: undergraduate teaching, graduate research, and clubs and organizations. This paper explores our experience in developing these projects …

Factors Correlating With Teachers' Use Of Computers In The Classroom, Samia A. Wahab Jun 2003

Factors Correlating With Teachers' Use Of Computers In The Classroom, Samia A. Wahab

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

This study examined several factors relating to the use of computers in the classroom by teachers. The factors examined in this study included teacher attitudes, emotions, beliefs and outside influences. This was done by a review of past studies, administering two surveys (demographics questionnaire and Computer Attitude Scale) and analyzing the survey data. Questionnaires were distributed to faculty at five randomly selected schools in the Chicagoland area participating in the study. Data from the surveys were then examined by principle components analysis, multiple correlation and multiple regression analyses to determine which factors correlate with teacher computer use in the classroom. …

On The Need For Reform Of The H-1b Non-Immigrant Work Visa In Computer-Related Occupations, Norman Matloff Jun 2003

On The Need For Reform Of The H-1b Non-Immigrant Work Visa In Computer-Related Occupations, Norman Matloff

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

The H-1B program authorizes non-immigrant visas under which skilled foreign workers may be employed in the U.S., typically in computer-related positions. Congress greatly expanded the program in 1998 and then again in 2000, in response to heavy pressure from industry, which claimed a desperate software labor shortage. After presenting an overview of the H-1B program in Parts II and III, the Article will show in Part IV that these shortage claims are not supported by the data. Part V will then show that the industry's motivation for hiring H-lBs is primarily a desire for cheap, compliant labor. The Article then …

Effect Of H-2 On The Martian Ionosphere: Implications For Atmospheric Evolution, Jane L. Fox Jun 2003

Effect Of H-2 On The Martian Ionosphere: Implications For Atmospheric Evolution, Jane L. Fox

Physics Faculty Publications

Because H2 reacts efficiently with O+, CO2 +, CO+, and N2 +, the molecular hydrogen abundance assumed in models of the Martian ionosphere greatly affects the high altitude density profiles of these ions. We have found that models of the low solar activity Martian ionosphere exhibit much smaller O+ densities than the measured values if the adopted H2 abundance is of the order of 40 ppm, the value proposed in a 1998 model of the Martian atmosphere. For a model based on the recently measured H2 abundance of …

The 1710 Von Graffenried Settlement Of New Bern, North Carolina, Lewis B. Rohrbach Cg Jun 2003

The 1710 Von Graffenried Settlement Of New Bern, North Carolina, Lewis B. Rohrbach Cg

Swiss American Historical Society Review

In the following study I have endeavored to identify and document the lives and descendants of all 752 Swiss and Germans who came from Bern, Switzerland and London, England in 1710 to found New Bern , North Carolina. There were approximately 177 families in the migration traveling on three ships, of whom 51 families were Swiss, 106 were German, and approximately 20 families died out entirely on the voyage so that we do not know their names or nationality . The much better known 1710 New York settlement involved 10 ships and 847 families, but although the New Bern settlement …

Stratigraphy Of Lake Michigan Lobe Deposits In Van Buren County, Michigan, Steven P. Beukema Jun 2003

Stratigraphy Of Lake Michigan Lobe Deposits In Van Buren County, Michigan, Steven P. Beukema

Masters Theses

The surficial glacial deposits and landforms of Van Buren County were recently mapped at a 1:24,000 scale as part of a STATEMAP project. Several borings were drilled to supplement the surface data. Six of these borings were characterized in detail by means of gamma ray logging, textural analysis, and X-ray diffraction of the clay-sized fraction of the diamicton units.

Results from this study reveal two diamicton units at stratigraphically distinct positions that can be correlated across the county and that are separated by a thick sequence of lacustrine sediments. Correlation of diamicton and lacustrine units was accomplished by analyzing several …

Distributed Planning And Control For Modular Robots With Unit-Compressible Modules, Zack Butler, Daniela Rus Jun 2003

Distributed Planning And Control For Modular Robots With Unit-Compressible Modules, Zack Butler, Daniela Rus

Computer Science Technical Reports

Self-reconfigurable robots are versatile systems consisting of large numbers of independent modules. Effective use of these systems requires parallel actuation and planning, both for efficiency and independence from a central controller. This paper presents the PacMan algorithm, a technique for distributed actuation and planning for systems with two- or three-dimensional unit-compressible modules. We give two versions of the algorithm along with correctness analysis. We also analyze the parallel actuation capability of the algorithm, showing that it will not deadlock and will avoid disconnecting the robot. We have implemented PacMan on the Crystal robot, a hardware system developed in our lab, …

A Surface-Based Approach For Classification Of 3d Neuroanatomic Structures, Li Shen, James Ford, Fillia Makedon, Andrew Saykin Jun 2003

A Surface-Based Approach For Classification Of 3d Neuroanatomic Structures, Li Shen, James Ford, Fillia Makedon, Andrew Saykin

Computer Science Technical Reports

We present a new framework for 3D surface object classification that combines a powerful shape description method with suitable pattern classification techniques. Spherical harmonic parameterization and normalization techniques are used to describe a surface shape and derive a dual high dimensional landmark representation. A point distribution model is applied to reduce the dimensionality. Fisher's linear discriminants and support vector machines are used for classification. Several feature selection schemes are proposed for learning better classifiers. After showing the effectiveness of this framework using simulated shape data, we apply it to real hippocampal data in schizophrenia and perform extensive experimental studies by …

Embodied Technology And Monetary Shocks; Lumps, Bumps, And Humps, John D. Stiver Jun 2003

Embodied Technology And Monetary Shocks; Lumps, Bumps, And Humps, John D. Stiver

Economics Working Papers

VAR analysis of monetary shocks suggest that an unanticipated, positive money shocks cause a drop in nominal interest rates, and increases in output, consumption, prices, and wages. Further, impulse responses indicate a "hump shaped" pattern with the maximum effect felt 1-2 years after the initial shock. Limited participation models can replicate the contemporaneous correlations of money shocks, but have difficulty with the longer run dynamics. This paper integrates a limited participation framework in a vintage capital model in an attempt to strengthen the monetary transmission mechanism.

Expectations, And Credibility In A Model Of Monetary Policy, John D. Stiver Jun 2003

Expectations, And Credibility In A Model Of Monetary Policy, John D. Stiver

Economics Working Papers

Recent monetary history has been characterized by monetary authorities which have been, alternatively hard and soft on inflation. In a vintage capital framework, investment decisions are not easily reversed. Therefore, expectations of policy as well as current policy are important to the investment decision. Here, a vintage capital model is used to assess the value of central bank credibility for a policy change. Policy in this model is assumed to be private information of the central banker. Agents learn about that policy which to study the ensuing transitional dynamics following a change in monetary policy regime.

Changing Women: An Ethnographic Study Of Homeless Mothers And Popular Education, Lorna Rivera Jun 2003

Changing Women: An Ethnographic Study Of Homeless Mothers And Popular Education, Lorna Rivera

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This article discusses ethnographic research conducted between 1995 and 1998 that studied the impact of popular education on the lives of fifty homeless and formerly homeless mothers. Data collection involved indepth interviews and participant observation in a family shelter located in one of Boston's poorest neighborhoods. The article argues that popular education increased the women's self-esteem, they were inspired to help other low-income women, they learned to advocate for their rights and they became more involved in their children's education. The findings suggest that popular education can best address the academic, personal, and community goals of very poor women.

A Monte Carlo Analysis Of Hedonic Models Using Traditional And Spatial Approaches, Helen R. Neill, David M. Hassenzahl, Djeto D. Assane

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research

Hedonic regression analysis of single family homes typically includes structural variables, locational variables and neighborhood quality characteristics. When nearby properties are related, Dubin (1988) reports that error terms are spatially autocorrelated. Estimation methods for these spatially autocorrelated error terms or hereafter, spatial approaches, include maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) and kriging techniques such as kriged maximum likelihood estimation (KMLE). Unfortunately these spatial methods require massive computer resources and are limited to significantly fewer observations than traditional ordinary least squares (OLS). This paper investigates the combination of spatial approaches and Monte Carlo analysis, a method that approximates large data sets. A question …

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

The MTL is assumed to be a 5m long rectangular loop with a circular cross-section. Because of the non-symmetry, and due to the active participation of the secondary flows due to the elbows present in the rectangular loop model, the geometry is considered as a 3D model.

When the regions of maximum corrosion and precipitation are compared, they fall in the same zone for both the analytical and simulated models. The reason for a larger concentration flux in the case of turbulent flow than for the laminar flow can be explained by the concept of higher lateral diffusion in the …
