The Mechanisms Of Market Inefficiency: An Introduction To The New Finance, Lynn A. Stout Jul 2003

The Mechanisms Of Market Inefficiency: An Introduction To The New Finance, Lynn A. Stout

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

During the 1970s and early 1980s, the Efficient Capital Market Hypothesis (ECMH) became one of the most widely-accepted and influential ideas in finance economics. More recently, however, the idea of market efficiency has fallen into disrepute as a result of market events and growing empirical evidence of inefficiencies. This essay argues that the weaknesses of the efficient market theory are, and were, apparent from a careful inspection of its initial premises, including the presumptions of homogeneous investor expectations, effective arbitrage, and investor rationality. By the same token, a wide range of market phenomena inconsistent with the ECHM can be explained …

What Is A Reasonable Attorney Fee? An Empirical Study Of Class Action Settlements, Theodore Eisenberg, Geoffrey P. Miller Jul 2003

What Is A Reasonable Attorney Fee? An Empirical Study Of Class Action Settlements, Theodore Eisenberg, Geoffrey P. Miller

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Determining an appropriate fee is a difficult task facing trial court judges in class action litigation. But courts rarely rely on empirical research to assess a fee’s reasonableness, due, at least in part, to the relative paucity of available information. Existing empirical studies of attorney fees in class action cases are limited in scope, and generally do not control for important variables. To help fill this gap, we analyzed data from all state and federal class actions with reported fee decisions from 1993 to 2002 in which the fee and class recovery could be determined with reasonable confidence.

We find …

Method For Characterizing Particles In A Liquid Medium Using Interferometry., Aristide Dogariu, Gabriel Popescu Jul 2003

Method For Characterizing Particles In A Liquid Medium Using Interferometry., Aristide Dogariu, Gabriel Popescu

UCF Patents

In a method for characterizing particles in a colloidal suspension, during a period in which the particles undergo sedimentation, changes are measured in the intensity among interference patterns generated by combining first and second partially coherent radiation portions. Each radiation portion is generated from the same source. The first portion includes a component transmitted through a fraction of the suspension, and the second portion is transmitted through a reference path.

Managing As If Faith Matters, Center For Catholic Studies, Seton Hall University Jul 2003

Managing As If Faith Matters, Center For Catholic Studies, Seton Hall University

Center for Catholic Studies Faculty Seminars and Core Curriculum Seminars

As part of the Lilly Endowment "Theological Exploration In Vocation" grant awarded to Seton Hall University, the Center for Catholic Studies sponsored a four-day seminar open to administration, faculty and staff to discern and situate their managerial role as a unique and transformative vocation.

Managing in a university setting poses critical personal questions: As a manager, what kind of person should I strive to become? What kind of organization should I, as a manager or employee, strive to build and maintain? Has my managerial education and formation contributed to a moral outlook that privatizes my faith and insulates my managerial …

The End Of Science Fiction: When Technological Extrapolation Hits A Wall Across The Future, James John Bell Jul 2003

The End Of Science Fiction: When Technological Extrapolation Hits A Wall Across The Future, James John Bell

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Science fiction, as a genre of popular fiction, can trace its roots as far back as the 2nd century AD, where fantastical worlds were conjured up in order to comment on current beliefs. The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1996) outlines a very specific ancestry:

[Science Fiction] is a descendant of the type of prose fiction sometimes referred to as Lucianic Satire (after Lucian of Samosata, a Greek writer of the 2nd century AD). Lucianic Satire -- also commonly known as Menippean Satire after an earlier writer, Menippus, whose works are now lost -- is a kind of …

Assigning Projects To Project Managers In A Multiple-Project Management Environment: A Pilot Study Of A Decision Support Model, Peerasit Patanakul, Dragan Milošević, Timothy R. Anderson

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Project assignment is considered one of the most critical project decisions since it influences the performance of projects, and eventually the performance of the organization. Despite its importance, the literature reveals two major gaps on project assignment criteria and methodology. To close these gaps, this study proposes an additional set of project assignment criteria and a systematic methodology for project assignments (DSM). By using the concepts of these case study research combined with a literature review, the important potential criteria for project assignments are identified. These criteria are used in conjunction with the concepts of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The paper examines prospects and constraints in the production and export market of mango, particularly the Boribo Muyuni, a popular mango variety in Zanzibar. It identifies the steps undertaken by government and private sector in stimulating production and marketing. The main constraints include suitability of only a few varieties for export, seasonal variability in output; pests and disease problems particularly the Mango fruitfly, Ceratitis cosyra, high freight charges, limited cargo space and lack of technical know-how on scientific management practices. The paper also identifies the steps undertaken by government to remove the constraints to promote exports, such as expanding nurseries, …

Institutions And The Urban Environment In Developing Countries: Challenges, Trends, And Transitions, Carlos A. Linares Jul 2003

Institutions And The Urban Environment In Developing Countries: Challenges, Trends, And Transitions, Carlos A. Linares

Yale School of the Environment Publications Series

The paper discusses challenges, trends, and transitions in the urban environment field and offers an approach to meeting Millennium Development Goal (MDG) targets in water supply and sanitation in urban areas. It updates the author’s 1994 publication Urban Environmental Challenges: New Directions for Technical Assistance to Cities inDeveloping Countries, published by the World Resources Institute. This paper begins by describing governance, decentralization, and privatization trends and drawing lessons from international development experiences in cities in developing countries. It argues that pervasive governance problems have led to environmental service deficits, particularly amongst the poor, who, at the same time, have demonstrated …

Moore’S Law: A Department Of Defense Perspective, Gerald M. Borsuk, Timothy Coffey Jul 2003

Moore’S Law: A Department Of Defense Perspective, Gerald M. Borsuk, Timothy Coffey

Defense Horizons

The past 50 years have seen enormous advances in electronics and the systems that depend upon or exploit them. The Department of Defense (DOD) has been an important driver in, and a profound beneficiary of, these advances, which have come so regularly that many observers expect them to continue indefinitely. However, as Jean de la Fontaine said, “In all matters one must consider the end.” A substantial literature debates the ultimate limits to progress in solid-state electronics as they apply to the current paradigm for silicon integrated circuit (IC) technology. The outcome of this debate will have a profound societal …

Direct 3d Interaction Using A 2d Locator Device, Anees Ansari Jul 2003

Direct 3d Interaction Using A 2d Locator Device, Anees Ansari

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Traditionally direct 3D interaction has always been limited to true 3D devices whereas 2D devices have always been used to achieve indirect 3D interaction. Till date no proper research has been done to try and extend the use of mouse to direct 3D interaction. In this research we explore the issues involved with using the mouse to accommodate the additional degrees of freedom required for 3D interaction. We put forth a unique and innovative design to achieve this objective and show that even a device as simple as the mouse can be highly effective for 3D interaction when supported by …

Optimization-Based Architecture For Managing Complex Integrated Product Development Projects, Hisham Mohamed El-Sayed Abdelsalam Jul 2003

Optimization-Based Architecture For Managing Complex Integrated Product Development Projects, Hisham Mohamed El-Sayed Abdelsalam

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

By the mid-1990's, the importance of early introduction of new products to both market share and profitability became fully understood. Thus, reducing product time-to-market became an essential requirement for continuous competition. Integrated Product Development (IPD) is a holistic approach that helps to overcome problems that arise in a complex product development project. IPD emphasis is to provide a framework for an effective planning and managing of engineering projects. Coupled with the fact that about 70% of the life cycle cost of a product is committed at early design phases, the motivation for developing and implementing more effective methodologies for managing …
