Optimization-Based Architecture For Managing Complex Integrated Product Development Projects, Hisham Mohamed El-Sayed Abdelsalam Jul 2003

Optimization-Based Architecture For Managing Complex Integrated Product Development Projects, Hisham Mohamed El-Sayed Abdelsalam

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

By the mid-1990's, the importance of early introduction of new products to both market share and profitability became fully understood. Thus, reducing product time-to-market became an essential requirement for continuous competition. Integrated Product Development (IPD) is a holistic approach that helps to overcome problems that arise in a complex product development project. IPD emphasis is to provide a framework for an effective planning and managing of engineering projects. Coupled with the fact that about 70% of the life cycle cost of a product is committed at early design phases, the motivation for developing and implementing more effective methodologies for managing …

Is It A Pocket Gopher Or Mole?, Wendy M. Arjo Jul 2003

Is It A Pocket Gopher Or Mole?, Wendy M. Arjo

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Depending on where you are, the term “gopher” is applied to a variety of mammal species including ground squirrels, prairie dogs and moles. The true pocket gopher is actually very distinguishable once you recognize their appearance and sign, or indicators of the animal. Pocket gophers are burrowing rodents named for their external fur-lined cheek pouches. Unlike mole mounds, which have been characterized as miniature volcanoes, gopher mounds are fan-shaped in appearance. Pocket gophers are distributed throughout the Pacific Northwest, but occur more frequently in the drier climates of eastern Washington and Oregon.

The Role Of Toxicants In Forest Management, Wendy M. Arjo Jul 2003

The Role Of Toxicants In Forest Management, Wendy M. Arjo

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Although the emphasis of the Olympia Field Station is on the development of non-lethal methods to control pest species, sometimes lethal methods are necessary. Toxicants can be an effective means of quickly reducing high populations of some problem animals or maintaining acceptable population densities. Depending on their mode of action, toxicants are classified into three categories: fumigants, acute toxicants and chronic toxicants.

Correspondences And Contradictions In International And Domestic Conflict Resolution: Lessons From General Theory And Varied Contexts, Carrie Menkel-Meadow Jul 2003

Correspondences And Contradictions In International And Domestic Conflict Resolution: Lessons From General Theory And Varied Contexts, Carrie Menkel-Meadow

Journal of Dispute Resolution

Does the field of conflict resolution have any broadly applicable theories that "work" across the different domains of international and domestic conflict? Or, are contexts, participants, and resources so "domain" specific and variable that only "thick descriptions" of particular contexts will do? These are important questions which have been plaguing me in this depressing time for conflict resolution professionals, from September 11, 2001 (9/11), to the war against Iraq. Have we learned anything about conflict resolution that really does improve our ability to describe, predict, and act to reduce unnecessary and harmful conflict? These are the questions I want to …

Simulation As A Tool For Evaluating Strategic Policies For Flexible Supply Chain Systems, Janice L. Forrester, Wayne W. Wakeland Jul 2003

Simulation As A Tool For Evaluating Strategic Policies For Flexible Supply Chain Systems, Janice L. Forrester, Wayne W. Wakeland

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

The emergence of flexible supply chain systems (FSC) has sparked increased interest in real-time planning, scheduling, and logistics--with particular consideration for strategic implications and overall cost control. Important aspects of an FSC include forecasting, production, materials handling, transportation, and distribution center inventory. There exists a variety of software applications for addressing tactical issues, such as adaptive scheduling, and short term forecasting. However, these programs typically do not permit the user to assess the strategic implications of different policies for flexing capacity and making alternative commitments to manufacturing plants. Recently there has been increased interest in the use of simulation models …

A System Dynamics Model Of The Pacific Coast Rockfish Fishery, Wayne Wakeland, Olgay Cangur, Guillermo Rueda, Astrid Scholz Jul 2003

A System Dynamics Model Of The Pacific Coast Rockfish Fishery, Wayne Wakeland, Olgay Cangur, Guillermo Rueda, Astrid Scholz

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper presents a model of the dynamic behavior of the yellowtail rockfish of the Pacific Coast of the United States. The purpose of the model is to generate endogenously the historical data for fish population, fishing vessels, regulatory parameters, and fish harvest. The model was subjected to a variety of tests to determine its sensitivity to changes in key parameters and initial values, including extreme conditions. Model results indicate that acceptable biological catch and fleet capacity must be adjusted quickly in response to changing conditions, in order to improve fishery sustainability. Additional analysis reinforces the policy of setting the …

Using Reconstructability Analysis To Select Input Variables For Artificial Neural Networks, Stephen Shervais, Martin Zwick Jul 2003

Using Reconstructability Analysis To Select Input Variables For Artificial Neural Networks, Stephen Shervais, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

We demonstrate the use of Reconstructability Analysis to reduce the number of input variables for a neural network. Using the heart disease dataset we reduce the number of independent variables from 13 to two, while providing results that are statistically indistinguishable from those of NNs using the full variable set. We also demonstrate that rule lookup tables obtained directly from the data for the RA models are almost as effective as NNs trained on model variables.

Automatic Classification Of African Elephant (Loxodonta Africana) Follicular And Luteal Rumbles, Michael T. Johnson, Patrick J. Clemins Jul 2003

Automatic Classification Of African Elephant (Loxodonta Africana) Follicular And Luteal Rumbles, Michael T. Johnson, Patrick J. Clemins

Dr. Dolittle Project: A Framework for Classification and Understanding of Animal Vocalizations

Recent research in African elephant vocalizations has shown that there is evidence for acoustic differences in the rumbles of females based on the phase of their estrous cycle (1). One reason for these differences might be to attract a male for reproductive purposes. Since rumbles have a fundamental frequency near 10Hz, they attenuate slowly and can be heard over a distance of several kilometers. This research exploits differences in the rumbles to create an automatic classification system that can determine whether a female rumble was made during the luteal or follicular phase of the ovulatory cycle. This system could be …

Geographic Variation In The Morphology Of Crotalus Horridus (Serpentes: Viperidae), John Robert Allsteadt Jul 2003

Geographic Variation In The Morphology Of Crotalus Horridus (Serpentes: Viperidae), John Robert Allsteadt

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The Timber Rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus) occurs in discontinuous populations throughout the eastern and central United States. The species exhibits high levels of polymorphism in morphological traits, especially in coloration and pattern. Previous studies recognized either distinct northern and southern subspecies or three regional morphs (northern, southern, and western), but conflicting data sets and limited geographic sampling of previous studies have left the relationships among those regional variants unclear. In this study, univariate and multivariate statistics, together with a geographic information system, were used to analyze geographic variation in 36 morphological characters recorded from 2,420 specimens of C. horridus …

One-Step Processing Of Spinel Ferrites Via The High-Energy Ball Milling Of Binary Oxides, V. G. Harris, D. J. Fatemi, J. O. Cross, E. E. Carpenter, V. M. Browning, J. P. Kirkland, Amitabh Mohan, Gary J. Long Jul 2003

One-Step Processing Of Spinel Ferrites Via The High-Energy Ball Milling Of Binary Oxides, V. G. Harris, D. J. Fatemi, J. O. Cross, E. E. Carpenter, V. M. Browning, J. P. Kirkland, Amitabh Mohan, Gary J. Long

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

MnZn ferrites have been produced via the high-energy ball milling of binary oxide precursors. The milled ferrites have a nonequilibrium cation site distribution, with an unusually high population of Zn cations on the octahedral sites. The particle size distribution drops precipitously with milling time from 60±1 to ∼14±1 nm at 10 h, but increases to 18.5±1 nm after long durations (20–40 h) concurrent with the formation of nearly pure ferrite. A 1 h anneal at 673 K facilitates a redistribution of cations to their near equilibrium sites. This processing approach circumvents the need for deleterious high-temperature heat treatments that often …

Fisheries Research Contract Reports

This project has drawn together existing research data relating to natural and human impacts on the Abrolhos Islands marine habitats. It has surveyed current uses of these habitats and placed anthropogenic impacts within the context of natural perturbations. Through public forum presentation and debate, this work has allowed real issues, not perceptions, to surface and be addressed properly. This was achieved by defining a strategic programme of research through a scientific workshop process involving all community stakeholders. A two volume Fisheries Research Report (WA) summarizes current knowledge and details the workshop proceedings and strategic research plan.

Superconvergence Of Iterated Solutions For Linear And Nonlinear Integral Equations: Wavelet Applications, Boriboon Novaprateep Jul 2003

Superconvergence Of Iterated Solutions For Linear And Nonlinear Integral Equations: Wavelet Applications, Boriboon Novaprateep

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

In this dissertation, we develop the Petrov-Galerkin method and the iterated Petrov-Galerkin method for a class of nonlinear Hammerstein equation. We also investigate the superconvergence phenomenon of the iterated Petrov-Galerkin and degenerate kernel numerical solutions of linear and nonlinear integral equations with a class of wavelet basis. The Fredholm integral equations and the Hammerstein equations are considered in linear and nonlinear cases respectively. Alpert demonstrated that an application of a class of wavelet basis elements in the Galerkin approximation of the Fredholm equation of the second kind leads to a system of linear equations which is sparse. The main concern …

A Statistical Evaluation Of Risk Priority Numbers In Failure Modes And Effects Analysis Applied To The Prediction Of Complex Systems, Anthony W. Dean Jul 2003

A Statistical Evaluation Of Risk Priority Numbers In Failure Modes And Effects Analysis Applied To The Prediction Of Complex Systems, Anthony W. Dean

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Complex systems such as military aircraft and naval ships are difficult to cost effectively maintain. Frequently, large-scale maintenance of complex systems (i.e., a naval vessel) is based on the reduction of the system to its base subcomponents and the use of manufacturer-suggested, time-directed, preventative maintenance, which is augmented during the systems lifecycle with predictive maintenance which assesses the system's ability to perform its mission objectives. While preventative maintenance under certain conditions can increase reliability, preventative maintenance systems are often costly, increase down time, and allow for maintenance-induced failures, which may decrease the reliability of the system (Ebeling, 1997). This maintenance …

Calibrating Expert Assessments Of Advanced Aerospace Technology Adoption Impact, Bruce A. Conway

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation describes the development of expert judgment calibration methodology as part of elicitation of the expert judgments to assist in the task of quantifying parameter uncertainty for proposed new aerospace vehicles. From previous work, it has been shown that experts in the field of aerospace systems design and development can provide valuable input into the sizing and conceptual design of future space launch vehicles employing advanced technology. In particular (and of specific interest in this case), assessment of operations and support cost implications of adopting proposed new technology is frequently asked of the experts. Often the input consisting of …

Atmospheric Water Vapor Lidar Measurements Using Analog And Photon Counting Techniques, Anuj Maheshkumar Shah Jul 2003

Atmospheric Water Vapor Lidar Measurements Using Analog And Photon Counting Techniques, Anuj Maheshkumar Shah

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Atmospheric water vapor measurements are essential for the understanding of Earth's weather and radiation budget, along with the water cycle. The remote sensing Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) technique is a commanding method used for water vapor measurements from aircraft, spaceborne, and ground-based platforms. The new unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) water vapor DIAL system provides great feasibility due to the weight and size limitations. The system has significantly less weight, power consumption, and noise presence, thus making it great for UAV applications.

This thesis discusses a UAV water vapor DIAL system that was designed, developed, and evaluated. The research effort was …

Analysis Of Multivariate Data Using Kotz Type Distribution, Kusaya Plungpongpun Jul 2003

Analysis Of Multivariate Data Using Kotz Type Distribution, Kusaya Plungpongpun

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

Most of the inferential statistical methods for multivariate data are developed under the fundamental assumption that the data are from a multivariate normal distribution. Unfortunately, one can never be sure a set of data is really from a multivariate normal distribution. There are numerous methods for checking (testing) multivariate normality, but based on many published and our own simulation studies, provided in the first chapter of this dissertation, we observe that these tests are generally not very powerful, especially for smaller sample sizes. Hence it is always beneficial to have alternative multivariate distributions available along with the methodology for using …

Information System Product Development By Integration Of Kano's Customer Satisfaction Model With Quality Function Deployment, Afife Yesim Sireli Jul 2003

Information System Product Development By Integration Of Kano's Customer Satisfaction Model With Quality Function Deployment, Afife Yesim Sireli

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Product development of complex, innovative information technology related systems presents difficult challenges for technology managers, and new product failures are a significant problem. The main reason for this is insufficient decision-making due to the lack of a customer-oriented product development process in the information system (IS) companies, which is often related to deficiencies in cooperation between R&D and marketing departments. Integrating consumer requirements into the product design phase is an important factor for improving market success. Therefore, a product development decision model is needed for the managers of information system companies to make more accurate decisions about the characteristics of …
