Pre-Conference Proceedings Of The Focus Symposium On Collaborative Decision-Support Systems, Collaborative Agent Design Research Center Jul 2003

Pre-Conference Proceedings Of The Focus Symposium On Collaborative Decision-Support Systems, Collaborative Agent Design Research Center

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

The papers included in these pre-conference proceedings reflect the increasing focus on the utilization of computers as collaborating, decision-assistance partners in complex and often time-critical problem situations. There are high expectations that intelligent software agents will solve many of our current information system woes, such as lack of interoperability, multiple failure points, vulnerability to intrusion, making the right information available to the right person at the right time, and proposing solutions under time-critical conditions. Software agents do not have magical human-like capabilities. It is not possible to simply develop a piece of software code that is capable of reasoning about …

The Knowledge Level Approach To Intelligent Information System Design, Michael A. Zang, Jens G. Pohl Jul 2003

The Knowledge Level Approach To Intelligent Information System Design, Michael A. Zang, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

Traditional approaches to building intelligent information systems employ an ontology to define a representational structure for the data and information of interest within the target domain of the system. At runtime, the ontology provides a constrained template for the creation of the individual objects and relationships that together define the state of the system at a given point in time. The ontology also provides a vocabulary for expressing domain knowledge typically in the form of rules (declarative knowledge) or methods (procedural knowledge). The system utilizes the encoded knowledge, often in conjunction user input, to progress the state of the system …

The Emerging Knowledge Management Paradigm: Some Organizational And Technical Issues, Jens G. Pohl Jul 2003

The Emerging Knowledge Management Paradigm: Some Organizational And Technical Issues, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

This paper addresses the expectations, organizational implications, and information processing requirements, of the emerging knowledge management paradigm. A brief discussion of the enablement of the individual through the wide-spread availability of computer and communication facilities, is followed by a description of the structural evolution of organizations, and the architecture of a computer-based knowledge management system. The author discusses two trends that are driven by the treatment of information and knowledge as a commodity: increased concern for the management and exploitation of knowledge within organizations; and, the creation of an organizational environment that facilitates the acquisition, sharing and application of knowledge. …

Modeling Electromagnetic Wave Propagation In Electrically Large Structures, Jon Wallace Jul 2003

Modeling Electromagnetic Wave Propagation In Electrically Large Structures, Jon Wallace

Theses and Dissertations

Existing unified numerical electromagnetic methods are often unable to analyze electrically large structures due to the amount of memory and processing power required, necessitating approximate analyses with limited applicability. In this research a hybrid modeling methodology is adopted to solve these complex problems more efficiently than unified numerical methods and more accurately than analytical methods. Electromagnetic modeling problems are divided into two or more levels of scale. Each level analyzes a specific level of detail and only promotes the required information to the next level. The method is demonstrated by successful application to three important problems: (1) remote sensing of …

Using Caching For Browsing Anonymity, Anna M. Shubina, Sean W. Smith Jul 2003

Using Caching For Browsing Anonymity, Anna M. Shubina, Sean W. Smith

Computer Science Technical Reports

Privacy-providing tools, including tools that provide anonymity, are gaining popularity in the modern world. Among the goals of their users is avoiding tracking and profiling. While some businesses are unhappy with the growth of privacy-enhancing technologies, others can use lack of information about their users to avoid unnecessary liability and even possible harassment by parties with contrary business interests, and to gain a competitive market edge. Currently, users interested in anonymous browsing have the choice only between single-hop proxies and the few more complex systems that are available. These still leave the user vulnerable to long-term intersection attacks. In this …

Tidal Corrections For Topex Altimetry In The Coral Sea And Great Barrier Reef Lagoon: Comparisons With Long-Term Tide Gauge Records, D.M. Burrage, C.R. Steinberg, L.B. Mason, L. Bode Jul 2003

Tidal Corrections For Topex Altimetry In The Coral Sea And Great Barrier Reef Lagoon: Comparisons With Long-Term Tide Gauge Records, D.M. Burrage, C.R. Steinberg, L.B. Mason, L. Bode

Faculty Publications

[ 1] The well-known capability of TOPEX/Poseidon altimetry to map sea levels precisely in the deep oceans motivates its application to the topographically complex Coral Sea and NE Australian continental margin. We assess several global tidal models for correcting TOPEX altimetry in the Coral Sea and find CSR3.0 offers good overall performance, based on comparisons of model-predicted and tide gauge harmonic constituents. Using CSR3.0 tidal corrections, we evaluate residual Sea Surface Height (SSH) Root Mean Square (RMS) variability and residual M2 tidal alias errors. Away from large reefs and islands, CSR3.0 amplitude and phase errors for M2 are typically less …

Boron-Carbide And Boron Rich Rhobohedral Based Transistors And Tunnel Diodes, Peter A. Dowben Jul 2003

Boron-Carbide And Boron Rich Rhobohedral Based Transistors And Tunnel Diodes, Peter A. Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

The present invention relates to the fabrication of a boron carbide/boron semiconductor devices. The results suggest that with respect to the approximately 2 eV band gap pure boron material, 0.9 eV band gap boron carbide (B5C) acts as a p-type material. Both boron and boron carbide (B5C) thin films were fabricated from single source borane cage molecules using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). Epitaxial growth does not appear to be a requirement. We have doped boron carbide grown by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition. The source gas close- 1,2-dicarbadecaborane (orthocarborane) was used to grow the …

Tegrid: Demonstration Of A Semantic Web Environment, Steven Gollery, Jens G. Pohl Jul 2003

Tegrid: Demonstration Of A Semantic Web Environment, Steven Gollery, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

Over the past several years there has been an increasing recognition of the shortcomings of message-passing data-processing systems that compute data without understanding, and the vastly superior potential capabilities of information-centric systems that incorporate an internal information model with sufficient context to support a useful level of automatic reasoning.

The key difference between a data-processing and an information-centric environment is the ability to embed in the information-centric software some understanding of the information being processed. The term information-centric refers to the representation of information in the computer, not to the way it is actually stored in a digital machine. This …

On The Internal Contradictions Of The Law Of One Price, David D. Haddock, Fred S. Mcchesney, William Franklin Shughart Jul 2003

On The Internal Contradictions Of The Law Of One Price, David D. Haddock, Fred S. Mcchesney, William Franklin Shughart

Law and Economics Papers

The "law of one price" defines a market as the geographic area within which the same thing is sold for the same price at the same time, allowance being made for transportation costs. This paper shows that as usually stated the law of one price actually has two plausible interpretations. The law might mean that a market can be defined as the economic space wherein prices differ only by transportation costs. Alternatively, the law might mean that a market, once defined by some other criterion, will exhibit prices differing only by transportation costs. Under the first definition of the law, …

Mechanical Stress Effect On Imprint Behavior Of Integrated Ferroelectric Capacitors, Alexei Gruverman, B. J. Rodriguez, A. I. Kingon, R. J. Nemanich, A. K. Tagantsev, J. S. Cross, M. Tsukada Jul 2003

Mechanical Stress Effect On Imprint Behavior Of Integrated Ferroelectric Capacitors, Alexei Gruverman, B. J. Rodriguez, A. I. Kingon, R. J. Nemanich, A. K. Tagantsev, J. S. Cross, M. Tsukada

Alexei Gruverman Publications

Stress-induced changes in the imprint and switching behavior of (111)-oriented Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT)-based capacitors have been studied using piezoresponse force microscopy. Visualization of polarization distribution and d33-loop measurements in individual 1x1.5-μm2 capacitors before and after stress application, generated by substrate bending, provided direct experimental evidence of stress-induced switching. Mechanical stress caused elastic switching in capacitors with the direction of the resulting polarization determined by the sign of the applied stress. In addition, stress application turned capacitors into a heavily imprinted state characterized by strongly shifted hysteresis loops and almost complete backswitching after application of the poling voltage. …

Interpreting Bids From A Vickrey Auction When There Are Public Good Attributes, Sean P. Hurley, James B. Kliebenstein Jul 2003

Interpreting Bids From A Vickrey Auction When There Are Public Good Attributes, Sean P. Hurley, James B. Kliebenstein

Agribusiness

This paper provides a model that allows for interpreting bids in a Vickrey auction when the good has public good attributes. It also examines information obtained from a Vickrey auction, which collected consumer’s willingness-to-pay for pork products that had embedded environmental attributes, and applies the new interpretation to the bids.

A Tale Of Two Premiums—Examining Bids From A Multiple Round Vickrey Auction With Differing Information Sets, Sean P. Hurley, James B. Kliebenstein

Agribusiness

Two definitions of willingness-to-pay derived from a Vickrey auction with multi-product and multiple rounds with different information sets are examined. These definitions are examined in the context of valuing pork products with embedded environmental attributes and we show how information can have adverse effects on a base product of comparison.

T-Splines And T-Nurccs, Thomas W. Sederberg, Jianmin Zheng, Almaz Bakenov, Ahmad Nasri Jul 2003

T-Splines And T-Nurccs, Thomas W. Sederberg, Jianmin Zheng, Almaz Bakenov, Ahmad Nasri

Faculty Publications

This paper presents a generalization of non-uniform B-spline surfaces called T-splines. T-spline control grids permit T-junctions, so lines of control points need not traverse the entire control grid. T-splines support many valuable operations within a consistent framework, such as local refinement, and the merging of several B-spline surfaces that have different knot vectors into a single gap-free model. The paper focuses on T-splines of degree three, which are C2 (in the absence of multiple knots). T-NURCCs (Non-Uniform Rational Catmull-Clark Surfaces with T-junctions) are a superset of both T-splines and Catmull-Clark surfaces. Thus, a modeling program for T-NURCCs can handle any …

Monopoly Power In The Electronic Information Industry: Why, And So What?, Curt A. Hessler Jul 2003

Monopoly Power In The Electronic Information Industry: Why, And So What?, Curt A. Hessler

ExpressO

This "law and economics" article diagnoses why monopoly power infects so many markets in the electronic media, communications, and information technology industries (collectively the "Industry"),and recommends changes to prevailing intellectual property and antitrust doctrines to remedy this problem.

The analysis focuses on a single "norm" -- the maximization of economic value, as defined by standard welfare economic theory. Identifying three distinct functions that operate throughout this otherwise diverse Industry -- authoring, publishing, and distribution -- the article notes that two economic peculiarities characterize most Industry markets: the technical feasibility of "non-rivalrous use" of digitized information products, and the frequent "creative …

High Altitude Himalayan Climate Inferred From Glacial Ice Flux, Joel T. Harper, Neil Humphrey Jul 2003

High Altitude Himalayan Climate Inferred From Glacial Ice Flux, Joel T. Harper, Neil Humphrey

Geosciences Faculty Publications

Glaciological processes are modeled to investigate precipitation patterns and the resulting mass flux of snow and ice across Himalayan topography. Our model tracks the accumulation and ablation of snow and ice and the transport of snow and ice across the topography by glacier motion. We investigate high elevation precipitation on the Annapurna Massif by comparing the existing ice cover with model-simulated glaciers produced by a suite of different precipitation scenarios. Our results suggest that precipitation reaches a maximum level well below the elevation of the highest peaks. Further, essentially no snow accumulates on the topography above an elevation of 6200–6300 …

Locally Efficient Estimation Of Nonparametric Causal Effects On Mean Outcomes In Longitudinal Studies, Romain Neugebauer, Mark J. Van Der Laan Jul 2003

Locally Efficient Estimation Of Nonparametric Causal Effects On Mean Outcomes In Longitudinal Studies, Romain Neugebauer, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Marginal Structural Models (MSM) have been introduced by Robins (1998a) as a powerful tool for causal inference as they directly model causal curves of interest, i.e. mean treatment-specific outcomes possibly adjusted for baseline covariates. Two estimators of the corresponding MSM parameters of interest have been proposed, see van der Laan and Robins (2002): the Inverse Probability of Treatment Weighted (IPTW) and the Double Robust (DR) estimators. A parametric MSM approach to causal inference has been favored since the introduction of MSM. It relies on correct specification of a parametric MSM to consistently estimate the parameter of interest using the IPTW …

Amino Acids Glu323, Tyr324, Glu330, And Val331 Of Factor Va Heavy Chain Are Essential For Expression Of Cofactor Activity, Lisam S. Singh, Michael A. Bukys, Daniel O. Beck, Michael Kalafatis Jul 2003

Amino Acids Glu323, Tyr324, Glu330, And Val331 Of Factor Va Heavy Chain Are Essential For Expression Of Cofactor Activity, Lisam S. Singh, Michael A. Bukys, Daniel O. Beck, Michael Kalafatis

Chemistry Faculty Publications

We have recently demonstrated that amino acid region 323-331 of factor Va heavy chain (9 amino acids, AP4') contains a binding site for factor Xa (Kalafatis, M., and Beck, D. O. (2002) Biochemistry 41, 12715-12728). To ascertain which amino acids within this region are important for the effector and receptor properties of the cofactor with respect to factor Xa, we have synthesized three overlapping peptides (5 amino acids each) spanning the amino acid region 323-331 and tested them for their effect on prothrombinase complex assembly and function. Peptide containing amino acids 323EYFIA327 alone was found to increase the catalytic efficiency …

Cross-Layer Protocols Optimized For Real-Time Multimedia Services In Energy-Constrained Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, William S. Hortos Jul 2003

Cross-Layer Protocols Optimized For Real-Time Multimedia Services In Energy-Constrained Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, William S. Hortos

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

The optimization of cross-layer protocols for real-time multimedia services in energy-constrained mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) was presented. The cross-layer optimization was based on stochastic dynamic programming conditions derived from time-dependent models of MANET packet flows. The performance of the optimized cross-layer protocols was also determined by using dynamic programming conditions.

Static And Dynamic Dipole Polarizability Of The Helium Atom Using Wave Functions Involving Logarithmic Terms, Mauro Masili, Anthony F. Starace Jul 2003

Static And Dynamic Dipole Polarizability Of The Helium Atom Using Wave Functions Involving Logarithmic Terms, Mauro Masili, Anthony F. Starace

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We present a calculation of the static and dynamic dipole polarizability of the helium atom using a variationally stable treatment that incorporates the coupled-channel hyperspherical representation of the wave functions. Inclusion of logarithmic terms in intermediate functions as well as the effect of an optimization procedure for the variational parameter are analyzed. When available, our coupled-channel results are compared with other values in the literature.
