Hydrology Of The Beaver Creek Watershed Using The Tr-20 Model And The Hec-Hms Program, Vijayalakshmi Tummala
Hydrology Of The Beaver Creek Watershed Using The Tr-20 Model And The Hec-Hms Program, Vijayalakshmi Tummala
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The proposed alignment of the Appalachian Corridor H section from Davis to Bismarck passes through Beaver Creek watershed, Tucker County, West Virginia, which was heavily affected by the historical mining, deteriorating the water quality conditions of the Beaver Creek. To improve the water quality of Beaver Creek, identification of the sources of impaired waters and the conveyance of these flows into passive treatment facilities for remediation has been proposed. To aid in the design of these treatment facilities, a baseline hydrology description through the hydrologic modeling of the watershed with the aid of rainfall-runoff models was proposed. The watershed modeling …
A Parallel Implementation Of The Glowinski-Pironneau Algorithm For The Modified Stokes Problem, Lawrence Kelly Waters
A Parallel Implementation Of The Glowinski-Pironneau Algorithm For The Modified Stokes Problem, Lawrence Kelly Waters
All Dissertations
In this dissertation we consider a parallel implementation of the Glowinski-Pironneau algorithm for the modified Stokes problem. In particular, we motivate this effort by demonstrating the occurrence of the modified Stokes problem in the time dependent viscoelastic Oldroyd flow setting using Saramito's splitting. We then present an analysis of the Glowinski-Pironneau pressure decomposition for the modified Stokes problem - including numerical error estimates. Next we discuss our parallel finite element method implementation of the pressure decomposition approach. Finally, we present numerical results including errors and performance measures. These measures are also compared with results for a coupled velocity-pressure modified Stokes …
Sufficient Conditions Used In Admittance Selection For Force-Guided Assembly Of Polygonal Parts, Shuguang Huang, Joseph M. Schimmels
Sufficient Conditions Used In Admittance Selection For Force-Guided Assembly Of Polygonal Parts, Shuguang Huang, Joseph M. Schimmels
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Admittance control approaches show significant promise in providing reliable force-guided assembly. An important issue in the development of these approaches is the specification of an appropriate admittance control law. This paper identifies procedures for selecting the appropriate admittance to achieve reliable force-guided assembly of planar polyhedral parts for single-point contact cases. A set of conditions that are imposed on the admittance matrix is presented. These conditions ensure that the motion that results from contact reduces part misalignment. We show that, for bounded misalignments, if an admittance satisfies the misalignment-reduction conditions at a finite number of contact configurations, then the admittance …
Effects Of Co-Teaching On Student Participation And Math Success On Students With Learning Disabilities In The General Education Classroom, Mia Karen Baldwin
Effects Of Co-Teaching On Student Participation And Math Success On Students With Learning Disabilities In The General Education Classroom, Mia Karen Baldwin
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
A Numerous research studies have been conducted to determine the effects of inclusion on academics, few of these studies specify the method used. The purpose of this study was to determine whether co-teaching would increase student's participation in the regular math classroom. The study was conducted in a sixth-grade regular education classroom in which students with learning disabilities were included. The co-teaching consisted mostly of interactive teaching between the regular education and the special education teacher. The subjects were students identified with a learning disability in either math calculation or math reasoning. The results indicated that student participation was not …
Operationalizing Technology Improvements In Product Development Decision-Making, Shantanu Bhattacharya, V. Krishnan, Vijay Mahajan
Operationalizing Technology Improvements In Product Development Decision-Making, Shantanu Bhattacharya, V. Krishnan, Vijay Mahajan
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Achieving competitive advantage and price premiums in many technology-based markets requires the incorporation of current technology in new products. To do so, firms in hyper-competitive environments increasingly plan and design their products concurrent with the independent development and validation of underlying technologies. Simultaneous validation of a core technology has important implications for a company's product positioning and launch sequence decisions making these traditional marketing decisions relevant to operations managers. Prior research has shown that to minimize cannibalization in the absence of such improvements in technology, a firm should not launch low-end products before high-end products. However, concurrent evolution of technology …

In models with large extra dimensions, particle collisions with a center-of-mass energy larger than the fundamental gravitational scale can generate nonperturbative gravitational objects. Since cosmic rays have been observed with energies above 108 TeV, gravitational effects in the TeV energy range can, in principle, be observed by ultrahigh energy cosmic ray detectors. We consider the interaction of ultrahigh energy neutrinos in the atmosphere and compare extensive air showers from TeV black hole formation and fragmentation with standard model processes. Departures from the standard model predictions arise in the interaction cross sections and in the multiplicity of secondary particles. Large …
Effect Of Kerr Nonlinearity On Defect Lasing Modes In Weakly Disordered Photonic Crystals, Boyang Liu, Alexey Yamilov, Hui Cao
Effect Of Kerr Nonlinearity On Defect Lasing Modes In Weakly Disordered Photonic Crystals, Boyang Liu, Alexey Yamilov, Hui Cao
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We studied the effect of Kerr nonlinearity on lasing in defect modes of weakly disordered photonic crystals. Our time-independent calculation based on self-consistent nonlinear transfer matrix method shows that Kerr nonlinearity modifies both frequencies and quality factors of defect modes. We also used a time-dependent algorithm to investigate the dynamic nonlinear effect. Under continuous pumping, the spatial sizes and intensities of defect lasing modes are changed by Kerr nonlinearity. Such changes are sensitive to the nonlinear response time.
Density Of Resonant States And A Manifestation Of Photonic Band Structure In Small Clusters Of Spherical Particles, Alexey Yamilov, Hui Cao
Density Of Resonant States And A Manifestation Of Photonic Band Structure In Small Clusters Of Spherical Particles, Alexey Yamilov, Hui Cao
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We introduce a numerical recipe for calculating the density of the resonant states of the clusters of dielectric spheres. Using truncated multipole expansions (generalized multisphere Mie solution) we obtain the scattering matrix of the problem. By introducing an infinitesimal absorption in the spheres we express the dwell time of the electromagnetic wave in terms of the elements of the scattering matrix. Using the parameters in recent light localization experiments [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 153901 (2001)], we demonstrate that the density of the resonant states, related to the dwell time, shows the formation of the photonic band structure in small clusters …
Dynamic Nonlinear Effect On Lasing In A Random Medium, Boyang Liu, Alexey Yamilov, Yong Ling, Junying Xu, Hui Cao
Dynamic Nonlinear Effect On Lasing In A Random Medium, Boyang Liu, Alexey Yamilov, Yong Ling, Junying Xu, Hui Cao
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We have studied both experimentally and numerically the dynamic effect of nonlinearity on lasing in disordered medium. The third-order nonlinearity not only changes the frequency and size of lasing modes, but also modifies the laser emission intensity and laser pulse width. When the nonlinear response time is longer than the lifetime of the lasing mode, the nonlinearity changes the laser output through modifying the size of the lasing mode. When the nonlinear response is faster than the buildup of the lasing mode, positive nonlinearity always extracts more laser emission from the random medium due to the enhancement of single particle …
Role Of The Ground State In Electron-Atom Double Ionization, Stephenie J. Jones, Don H. Madison
Role Of The Ground State In Electron-Atom Double Ionization, Stephenie J. Jones, Don H. Madison
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Recently, absolute measurements have been reported for double ionization of helium by 5.6 keV electron-impact. At this high energy, one would think that the first Born approximation for the interaction of the projectile with the atom would be valid. However, on the basis of a lowest-order implementation of a Faddeev-type approach, Berakdar concluded that the approximation was not valid. Here we argue that (i) it is valid at this energy and (ii) the previous discrepancy between calculations in the first Born approximation and the overall magnitude of the measurements was due to a poor description of the ground state.

Dynamic Modeling And Control Of A Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell As A Distributed Generator, Padmanabhan Srinivasan
Dynamic Modeling And Control Of A Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell As A Distributed Generator, Padmanabhan Srinivasan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research concentrated on the modeling and control of a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell in a deregulated electric power system. The PEM fuel cell is a Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) system with various dynamic states. In most previous model studies, the stack temperature of a fuel cell was considered to be constant. For long duration short transient and analysis, the stack temperature should be considered a variable. A derived dynamic model for the PEM fuel cell was analyzed using MATLAB/SIMULINK. Power generation characteristics of the PEM fuel cell were presented. Performance of the PEM fuel cell under …

The research questions were (a) whether learning component gait training skills would result in better ability to choose ambulation aids and gait patterns for patients …
Evaluation Of A Whole-Class Token Economy To Manage Disruptive Behavior In Preschool Classrooms, Holly A. Filcheck
Evaluation Of A Whole-Class Token Economy To Manage Disruptive Behavior In Preschool Classrooms, Holly A. Filcheck
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The behavior of children in a preschool classroom was assessed to evaluate the effectiveness of two classroom management approaches: (a) strategies already employed by the teachers, and (b) the Level System. Strategies already employed by the teachers were those that they currently used in their preschool classroom. This phase was considered the baseline or "A" treatment phase. The Level System is a new program that utilizes strategies including a token economy, stimulating rewards, strategic attention, and labeled praise to manage a range of behaviors exhibited by children in the classroom. This was considered the "B" treatment condition. These two approaches …

Vocal Dose Measures: Quantifying Accumulated Vibration Exposure In Vocal Fold Tissues, Ingo R. Titze, Jan G. Švec, Peter Popolo
Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
To measure the exposure to self-induced tissue vibration in speech, three vocal doses were defined and described: distance dose, which accumulates the distance that tissue particles of the vocal folds travel in an oscillatory trajectory; energy dissipation dose, which accumulates the total amount of heat dissipated over a unit volume of vocal fold tissues; and time dose, which accumulates the total phonation time. These doses were compared to a previously used vocal dose measure, the vocal loading index, which accumulates the number of vibration cycles of the vocal folds. Empirical rules for viscosity and vocal fold deformation were used to …

Edward Schmidt Publications
We present 88 Hα profiles for 24 pulsating variable stars with periods between 1 and 3 days in order to explore the behavior of this line in type II as compared with classical Cepheids. Surprisingly, large velocity differences were found between Hα and the metal lines in some type II Cepheids. Strong emission was observed in three stars, VZ Aql, NW Lyr, and V439 Oph, while line filling by incipient emission is present in seven others. All of the stars with emission and most with incipient emission belong to Diethelm's AHB2 class, and the emission is associated with the secondary …

Landscape Change In The Southern Piedmont: Challenges, Solutions, And Uncertainty Across Scales, Michael J. Conroy, Craig R. Allen, James T. Peterson, Lowell Pritchard, Clinton T. Moore
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
The southern Piedmont of the southeastern United States epitomizes the complex and seemingly intractable problems and hard decisions that result from uncontrolled urban and suburban sprawl. Here we consider three recurrent themes in complicated problems involving complex systems: (1) scale dependencies and cross-scale, often nonlinear relationships; (2) resilience, in particular the potential for complex systems to move to alternate stable states with decreased ecological and/or economic value; and (3) uncertainty in the ability to understand and predict outcomes, perhaps particularly those that occur as a result of human impacts. We consider these issues in the context of landscape-level decision making, …

Are Veterinary Medicines Causing Environmental Risks?, Alistair Boxall, Dana Kolpin, Bent Holling-Sorensen, Johannes Tolls
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Recently, low levels of veterinary medicines have been detected worldwide in soils, surface waters, and groundwaters (1,2). Although the impacts of selected compounds – most notably anthelmintics and selected antibacterial compounds – have been extensively investigated (3,4), many other substances found int the environment are less publicly well understood. As a result, researches have raised questions about the impact of veterinary medicines on organisms in the environment and on human health. Several key questions will be addressed in this article. What other veterinary medicines might be in the environment, and should we be concerned about these? How do these substances …

An Individual-Based Model Of Canid Populations: Modelling Territoriality And Social Structure, William C. Pitt, Paul W. Box, Frederick F. Knowlton
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
The management of canid populations has been at the forefront of wildlife management worldwide for much of the last century. Effective management depends on the ability to integrate species biology, the environmental aspects upon which those populations depend, and the factors controlling species abundance. Further, managing canid populations requires consideration of territoriality and dominance, which may have a significant effect on population dynamics. To better understand the effect of social structure on canid populations, we developed an individual-based computer model using Swarm to mimic natural coyote population dynamics. We selected the Swarm simulation environment because it is ideally suited for …
Two-Dimensional Cubic Convolution, Stephen E. Reichenbach, Frank Geng
Two-Dimensional Cubic Convolution, Stephen E. Reichenbach, Frank Geng
School of Computing: Faculty Publications
This paper develops two-dimensional (2-D), nonseparable, piecewise cubic convolution (PCC) for image interpolation. Traditionally, PCC has been implemented based on a one-dimensional (1-D) derivation with a separable generalization to two dimensions. However, typical scenes and imaging systems are not separable, so the traditional approach is suboptimal. We develop a closed-form derivation for a two-parameter, 2-D PCC kernel with support [-2, 2] [-2, 2] that is constrained for continuity, smoothness, symmetry, and flat-field response. Our analyses using several image models, including Markov random fields, demonstrate that the 2-D PCC yields small improvements in interpolation fidelity over the traditional, separable approach. The …

Model-Independent Quantum Approach For Intense Laser Detachment Of A Weakly Bound Electron, M.V. Frolov, N. L. Manakov, E.A. Pronin, Anthony F. Starace
Anthony F. Starace Publications
We present a model-independent theory for laser detachment of a weakly bound electron having a nonzero angular momentum. Our treatment reduces to the well-known Keldysh result for tunnel ionization upon neglecting rescattering effects. Numerical results for the above-threshold detachment spectrum of a negative ion having an outer p electron show significant modification of the rescattering plateau as compared to that for an ion having an outer s electron.
Fdtd Method Capable Of Attaching Rectangular Domains, Kai Xiao, David Pommerenke, James L. Drewniak
Fdtd Method Capable Of Attaching Rectangular Domains, Kai Xiao, David Pommerenke, James L. Drewniak
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method capable of attaching rectangular computational domains is proposed herein. The aim of this approach is to reduce the size of computational domain according to the geometry of the modeled structure so as to reduce the simulation time with keeping precision of the result in an acceptable range. A multigrid algorithm is applied on the attaching interface between two rectangular domains so that different resolution can be achieved in different domains.
A Synthesizable Single-Cycle Multiply-Accumulator, John Childs
A Synthesizable Single-Cycle Multiply-Accumulator, John Childs
Theses
The multiplication and multiply-accumulate operations are expensive to implement in hardware for Digital Signal Processing, video, and graphics applications. A standard multiply-accumulator has three inputs and a single output that is equal to the product of two of its inputs added to the third input. For some applications it is desirable for a multiply-accumulator to have two outputs; one output that is the product of the first two inputs, and a second output that is the multiply-accumulate result. The goal of this thesis is to investigate algorithms and architectures used to design multipliers and multiply-accumulators, and to create a multiply-accumulator …

Online Identification Of Turbogenerator's Dynamics Using A Neuro-Identifier, Wenxin Liu, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Donald C. Wunsch
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The increasing complexity of modern power systems highlights the need for effective system identification techniques for the successful control of power system. This paper proposes a robust continually online trained neuroidentifier to predict the outputs of turbogenerator - terminal voltage and speed deviation. The inputs to the neuro-identifier are the changes of the plant's outputs and plant's inputs. It overcomes the drawback of calculating deviation signals from reference signals for different operating points in previous work. Simulation results show that the neuro-identifier can provide accurate identification under different operating conditions. Furthermore, the neuro-identifier can learn the dynamics of the system …

Variable Temperature Nmr Studies On 3-Imino-2,2,4,4-Tetramethylcyclobutanones: Gibbs Free Energy For Inversion Of Groups On Nitrogen, Hing-Lun Chong
Theses
A value for the free energy of activation, or G for the inversion of groups on the imino nitrogen of the title compounds was calculated from data obtained from variable temperature NMR. The coalescence temperature, Tc, is obtained as the temperature at which the non-equivalent methyl resonances of the title compounds collapse to a singlet. G is calculated from G =2.3RTc(10.32 + logTc/k) Eq.3 derived from the Eyring Equation. p-Methoxyphenylimino-2,2,4,4-tetramethyl 3-cyclobutanone (4) is found to possess an energy of activation equal to that of 18.55 kcal/mole with its temperature of coalescence at 118C. p-Nitrophenylimino-2,2,4,4-tetramethyl 3-cyclobutanone (5) is found to have …

Mathematics Instructional Methods And Their Effects On Student Mathematics Scores, Ruth Huovinen
Theses and Dissertations
Mathematics instruction is undergoing an evolution in the United States. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) advocates a change from the previous emphasis on computational skills to a greater emphasis on problem solving. The pre-service training most teachers completed did not include extensive exposure to strategies of this type. For that reason, school districts may choose to utilize staff development programs to assist teachers in acquiring these new strategies. This study examined one such staff development program, Developing Mathematical Ideas (DMI), and its effects on the mathematics achievement scores of the fourth grade students in a school district. …
Modeling Of Short-Gap Esd Under Consideration Of Different Discharge Mechanisms, S. Bonisch, Wilifried Kalkner, David Pommerenke
Modeling Of Short-Gap Esd Under Consideration Of Different Discharge Mechanisms, S. Bonisch, Wilifried Kalkner, David Pommerenke
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Simulation of short gap electrostatic discharge (ESD) in air needs to consider two processes: a surface process and an avalanche process. Two models, a phenomenological approach and a physical approach, considering both discharge processes are proposed for the simulation of short-gap ESD. A new mathematical derivation for the modeling of the surface process is discussed in detail. A new technique to combine surface and avalanche process models is described. Measured and simulated data based on short-gap ESD are provided and compared. Advantages and drawbacks of the proposed models are discussed. Attained results should help to optimize ESD testing.
