Variations In Control And Display Gain In A First Control Order Compensatory Manual Tracking Task, Micah N. Morris Oct 2003

Variations In Control And Display Gain In A First Control Order Compensatory Manual Tracking Task, Micah N. Morris

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

There exist many factors that contribute to the optimal manual control of a system by a human operator (HO). Two such variables include control gain and display gain. Of particular interest to the following experiment is the contribution of these two variables to the manual tracking performance of any HO conducting a compensatory tracking task while using a first control-order tracking system. Since the optimal level of control gain required for maximal manual control of a tracking device is system dependent, it may be expected that the same holds true of display gain. Regardless, it is the purpose of the …

Nitric Oxide Mediates Seasonal Muscle Potentiation In Clam Gills, Louis F. Gainey Jr., Michael J. Greenberg Oct 2003

Nitric Oxide Mediates Seasonal Muscle Potentiation In Clam Gills, Louis F. Gainey Jr., Michael J. Greenberg

Faculty Publications

The physiology and timing of gill muscle potentiation were explored in the clam Mercenaria mercenaria. When isolated demibranchs were exposed twice (with an intervening wash) to the same concentration of 5-hydroxytryptamine, the second contraction was larger than the first. This potentiation was seasonal: it was present from November through June, and absent from July through October. Potentiation was not affected by the geographic origin of the clams, nor by their acclimation temperature. Potentiation was inhibited by the nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor L-NAME and mimicked by the nitric oxide (NO) donor DEANO. During the season of potentiation, immunoreactive NOS appeared …

Miscellaneous Publication 26/2003 - Benefit -Cost Analysis Of Soil Acidity Research Development And Extension In Western Australia, 1992-93 To 2001-02, Michael O'Connell, Chris Gazey

Farm Systems and Economics published reports

The program of publicly funded soil acidity RD&E' conducted in Western Australia from 1992-93 to 2001-02 is expected to deliver benefits to the farm sector over future years. Benefit-cost analysis indicates that these industry benefits should outweigh the public cost of the RD&E several times over.

Using a 20-year analysis period, the RD&E is estimated to have a net present value (NPV) of $84 million, and a benefit-cost ratio (BCR) of 5.8. Extending the analysis to 30 years results in an NPV of $135 million and a BCR of 8.7. These large returns are due to a combination of factors: …

The Fourth Tampa Bay Area Scientific Information Symposium Basis 4, S. F. Treat Oct 2003

The Fourth Tampa Bay Area Scientific Information Symposium Basis 4, S. F. Treat

Reports

We have observed large fluctuations in Tampa Bay fish populations over the last decade, and these changes may be associated with the environment, management practices, or other factors. Staff of the Florida Fish and Wildlife and Conservation Commission’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute began developing the Fisheries-Independent Monitoring (FIM) program in 1988 and have monitored fish populations in Tampa Bay continuously since 1989. Various types of sampling gear have been utilized during the history of FIM, but 21.3-m bag seines have been used since the beginning of the program. This small seine is effective at capturing juveniles of many economically …

Usability Of E-Journals And Preference For The Virtual Periodicals Room: A Survey Of Mathematics Faculty And Graduate Students, Lutishoor Salisbury, Emilio Noguera Oct 2003

Usability Of E-Journals And Preference For The Virtual Periodicals Room: A Survey Of Mathematics Faculty And Graduate Students, Lutishoor Salisbury, Emilio Noguera

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

Introduction

Using several variables, the University of Arkansas Libraries conducted a survey in 2002 to measure the nature and extent of journal use in the Mathematics Reading Room, the Virtual Periodicals Room and Mullins Library.

The aims of this survey were two-fold: firstly, to collect information on the current level of support for electronic-only journals to aid in collection development, and secondly, to ascertain whether a Virtual Periodicals Room is a viable alternative to the physical Reading Room for the Mathematics faculty.

Conclusion

It is obvious from the results of the survey that greater use is being made of the …

Bibliographic Instruction: Two Models Converging In A Common Goal, Stephen J. Shaw Oct 2003

Bibliographic Instruction: Two Models Converging In A Common Goal, Stephen J. Shaw

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

Introduction

This essay will explore research in the undergraduate curriculum by examining the divergent ways research is understood. The debate centers around the ways that the typical student perceives the role of the library in her education at the university. To limit the discussion to the relation between the student and the librarian misses the larger issue at stake. What needs does the average undergraduate have after completion of the B.A., if they have no plans to continue education further? Are research skills necessary only for the graduate student, or is there some truth to the humanistic notion of 'knowledge …

Unity In Diversity: The Virtues Of A Metadisciplinary Perspective In Liberal Arts Education, Alexander Werth Oct 2003

Unity In Diversity: The Virtues Of A Metadisciplinary Perspective In Liberal Arts Education, Alexander Werth

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

Remember the story of the blind men and the elephant? Each man touches a different part of the animal (its side, trunk, tusk, leg, ear, and tail) and pronounces his find a wall, a snake, a spear, a tree, a fan, or a rope. As the poet Godfrey Saxe (1816-1997) wrote of the blind men in his retelling of this ancient Indian parable, “Though each was partly in the right, they all were in the wrong” (Galdone, 1973). This allegory quickly encapsulates the benefits, and the challenges, of seeing, or not seeing, something through multiple perspectives—in short, it illuminates the …

A Multi-Perspective Class Project At Oral Roberts University, Andrew Lang, Aimee Raile, Joy Thrall

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

In 2001, Oral Roberts University launched an honors program. Unlike most honors programs, the ORU program is two-tiered, meaning that the top sixteen to eighteen students in every class are considered fellows and the rest of the students who meet the academic requirements are scholars. ORU requires both fellows and scholars to complete twenty-four hours of honors coursework through designated sections of general education classes. One unique aspect of the program is that the fellows are required to complete five of six special interdisciplinary honors seminars as part of their required twenty-four hours. These classes replace traditional general education courses …

Gender, Professional Orientation, And Student Achievement: Elements Of School Culture, Teresa White, Barbara N. Martin, Judy A. Johnson Oct 2003

Gender, Professional Orientation, And Student Achievement: Elements Of School Culture, Teresa White, Barbara N. Martin, Judy A. Johnson

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

This study explored the relationships between professional orientation (defined as how the principal sees his or her role in the organization) and school culture, the influence of gender on professional orientation, and the relationship between school culture and the academic achievement of students. One hundred principals were surveyed. Two instruments, the Professional Orientation and the School Culture Survey were completed. The results were analyzed using linear regression statistics to determine (a) gender and professional orientation effect on the factors of school culture, and (b) if factors of school culture had an effect on student success in the elementary school. Findings …

Age Group Differences In Recall Of Relevant And Irrelevant Words, Daniel Jose' Padilla Oct 2003

Age Group Differences In Recall Of Relevant And Irrelevant Words, Daniel Jose' Padilla

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Many studies have shown that older adults tend to perform more poorly on memory tasks, when compared to younger people. Conversely, studies have also indicated that there may be ways to combat this decline in age related memory performance by using memory aid techniques. In addition to memory aid techniques, word familiarity may be used to increase memory performance because working memory for familiar words benefits from the availability of long-term phonological memory representations, which act to "clean up" the decaying memory traces of items in the list retrieval stage. This memory study compared word recall performance of younger and …

Review Of Geometry In Architecture: Texas Buildings Yesterday And Today By Clovis Heimsath, Robert Duncan Oct 2003

Review Of Geometry In Architecture: Texas Buildings Yesterday And Today By Clovis Heimsath, Robert Duncan

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Geometry in Architecture is really two books in one. The subtitle, Texas Buildings Yesterday and Today, provides the context for the theme of a book that is fundamentally a pictorial essay covering selected architectural elements of early Texas buildings. The original book, written in 1968 and titled Pioneer Texas Buildings: A Geometry Lesson, was an essay in two parts. The written section provided Heimsath's personal observations on the state of architecture as he perceived it in 1968. As a critique of architectural design, his views, though caustic, had some degree of validity. His major criticism was his concern …

Mind Your Own Business: The Trouble With Justice In Plato's Republic, John Patrick Coby Oct 2003

Mind Your Own Business: The Trouble With Justice In Plato's Republic, John Patrick Coby

Government: Faculty Publications

The Republic’s paradoxical definition of justice—minding one’s own business—comes mainly from Socrates’ examination of the arts. The definition applies well to artisans who specialize in single trades, but poorly to warriors who meddle in everyone’s affairs. Are the warriors then unjust? Rather than conclude that they are, the paper maintains that justice is conditioned by class and that the justice practiced by warriors (self-sacrificing and homogenizing) differs from the justice practiced by workers (self-serving and differentiating). But because the formal definition never changes, despite the awkwardness of fit, the paper further suggests that something is askew with justice, with its …

The Evolution Of Warning Signals As Reliable Indicators Of Prey Defense, Thomas N. Sherratt, Christopher D. Beatty Oct 2003

The Evolution Of Warning Signals As Reliable Indicators Of Prey Defense, Thomas N. Sherratt, Christopher D. Beatty

Biology

It is widely argued that defended prey have tended to evolve conspicuous traits because predators more readily learn to avoid defended prey when they are conspicuous. However, a rival theory proposes that defended prey have evolved such characters because it allows them to be distinguished from undefended prey. Here we investigated how the attributes of defended (unprofitable) and undefended (profitable) computer-generated prey species tended to evolve when they were subject to selection by foraging humans. When cryptic forms of defended and undefended species were similar in appearance but their conspicuous forms were not, defended prey became conspicuous while undefended prey …

Modeling Of The Inverse Heat -Conduction Problem With Application To Laser Chemical Vapor Deposition And Bioheat Transfer, Peng Zhen Oct 2003

Modeling Of The Inverse Heat -Conduction Problem With Application To Laser Chemical Vapor Deposition And Bioheat Transfer, Peng Zhen

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation consists of two parts. Part one deals with three-dimensional laser induced chemical vapor deposition (3D-LCVD), whereas part two deals with a Pennes model of a 3D skin structure. LCVD is an important technique in manufacturing complex micro-structures with high aspect ratio. In part one, a numerical model was developed for simulating kinetically-limited growth of an axisymmetric cylindrical rod by pre-specifying the surface temperature distribution required for growing the rod and then by obtaining optimized laser power that gives rise to the pre-specified temperature distribution. The temperature distribution at the surface of the rod was assumed to be at …

Observation Of 430 Nm Electroluminescence From Zno/Gan Heterojunction Light-Emitting Diodes, Ya I. Alivov, J. E. Van Nostrand, David C. Look, M. V. Chukichev, B. M. Ataev

Physics Faculty Publications

In this work, we report on the growth, fabrication, and device characterization of wide-band-gap heterojunction light-emitting diodes based on the n-ZnO/p-GaN material system. The layer structure is achieved by first growing a Mg-doped GaN film of thickness 1 μm on Al2O3(0001) by molecular-beam epitaxy, then by growing Ga-doped ZnO film of thickness 1 μm by chemical vapor deposition on the p-GaN layer. Room-temperature electroluminescence in the blue-violet region with peak wavelength 430 nm is observed from this structure under forward bias. Light–current characteristics of these light-emitting diodes are reported, and a superlinear …

Remote Hydrogen Plasma Processing Of Zno Single Crystal Surfaces, Yuri M. Strzhemechny, John Nemergut, Phillip E. Smith, Junjik Bae, David C. Look, Leonard J. Brillson

Physics Faculty Publications

We have studied the effects of remote hydrogen plasma treatment on the defect characteristics in single crystal ZnO. Temperature-dependent (9–300 K) and excitation intensity-dependent photoluminescence spectra reveal that H-plasma exposure of ZnO effectively suppresses the free-exciton transition and redistributes intensities in the bound-exciton line set and two-electron satellites with their phonon replicas. The resultant spectra after hydrogenation exhibit a relative increase in intensity of the I4 (3.363 eV) peak, thought to be related to a neutral donor bound exciton, and a peak feature at 3.366 eV with a distinctly small thermal activation energy. Hydrogenation also produces a violet 100 …
