Utilising Riometry To Observe Gravity Waves In The Sunlit Mesosphere, M. J. Jarvis, R. E. Hibbins, Michael J. Taylor, T. J. Rosenberg Oct 2003

Utilising Riometry To Observe Gravity Waves In The Sunlit Mesosphere, M. J. Jarvis, R. E. Hibbins, Michael J. Taylor, T. J. Rosenberg

All Physics Faculty Publications

The novel use of imaging riometers to observe mesospheric gravity waves is described. Imaging riometers respond to changes in the absorption of cosmic radio noise in the ionospheric D-region which enables them to detect the compression and rarefaction of the atmosphere at 90 km altitude generated by the passage of gravity waves. A considerable advantage of this method is that, unlike conventional techniques which rely on imaging faint optical emissions from the airglow layer at 87 km altitude, riometers remain operative under daylit, moonlit or cloudy conditions. This is particularly important for research into gravity wave forcing of mesospheric temperature …

Where's (The) Computer Science In Service-Learning?, Pete Sanderson Oct 2003

Where's (The) Computer Science In Service-Learning?, Pete Sanderson

Mathematics Faculty Scholarship

Service-learning is a form of experiential learning that integrates classroom concepts with related community service. Computer science faculty and students stand to reap great benefit from the integration of service-learning practice and philosophy into curricula. Many faculty are already doing so, yet computer science is not very visible in the service-learning community. Similarly, service-learning is not very visible in the computer science education community. It is imperative for those computer science faculty involved in service-learning to develop, apply and disseminate effective frameworks for integrating service learning into undergraduate computer science curricula so that its benefits may be more fully realized.

Influences On Achievement In Literacy And Numeracy, Sheldon Rothman, Julie Mcmillan Oct 2003

Influences On Achievement In Literacy And Numeracy, Sheldon Rothman, Julie Mcmillan

LSAY Research Reports

This report examines the influence of a range of factors on the literacy and numeracy achievement levels of Year 9 students in Australia. The data were obtained from students in the first wave of LSAY and were analysed using hierarchical linear modelling to account for the sample design of LSAY. Modelling procedures followed a theoretical construct, incorporating variables believed to be important influences on achievement in literacy and numeracy. In addition, variables were selected to ensure consistency between cohorts and between literacy and numeracy. Included in the analyses were variables relating to students (gender, Indigenous background, language background, home location), …

Women's Studies University Of Nebraska-Lincoln Fall 2003, Joy Ritchie, Erika Hamilton

Women's and Gender Studies Program: Information and Materials

What are the challenges and opportunities facing Women's Studies in the current climate of higher education and at UNL? Forty-four faculty and graduate students began discussing this question at our first luncheon meeting of the semester. Our Colloquium Series continues to highlight one of our strengths. This fall it included Professors Chantal Kalisa (Modern Languages) and Rose Holz (History) discussing their research in "Finding a Research Topic and Doing it Too: Lessons from Two Women's Studies Projects." In October, four Ph.D. students, Em-orn Dispanya, Razia Khan, Kyoko Matsunaga, and Yeaji Shin, presented their creative work and research in "Perspectives of …

Feminine Context Of Prehistoric Notation Systems, David Oldroyd Oct 2003

Feminine Context Of Prehistoric Notation Systems, David Oldroyd

Accounting Historians Notebook

A radical school of modern feminism exists which believes in the existence of a time in prehistory, before the male take-over, when society was universally matriarchal, and women enjoyed a more central role in society than men. The idea of an ancient matriarchy first gained ground in the 19th century amongst evolutionary theorists, such as Engels. He linked the oppression of women to the rise of the state, which he said had resulted in the separation of private and public domains, the activities of women being relegated to the private service of their husbands (Leacock, 1978, p. 255; Siverblatt, 1991, …

Real-Time Algorithms For Statistical Analysis Of Interval Data, Berlin Wu, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich Oct 2003

Real-Time Algorithms For Statistical Analysis Of Interval Data, Berlin Wu, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

When we have only interval ranges [xi] of sample values x1,...,xn, what is the interval [V] of possible values for the variance V of these values? There are quadratic time algorithms for computing the exact lower bound V- on the variance of interval data, and for computing V+ under reasonable easily verifiable conditions. The problem is that in real life, we often make additional measurements. In traditional statistics, if we have a new measurement result, we can modify the value of variance in constant time. In contrast, previously known algorithms for processing interval data required that, once a new data …

Recent Paleoseismic Investigations In Northern And Western Thailand, Clark H. Fenton, Punya Charusiri, Spencer H. Wood Oct 2003

Recent Paleoseismic Investigations In Northern And Western Thailand, Clark H. Fenton, Punya Charusiri, Spencer H. Wood

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Recent paleoseismic investigations have identified a number of active faults in Northern and Western Thailand. Northern Thailand is an intraplate basin and range province, comprised of north-south-trending Cenozoic intermontane grabens and half grabens, bounded by north- to northwest-striking normal to normal-oblique faults and northeast-striking left-lateral strike-slip faults. The basin-bounding normal faults are marked by steep, linear range fronts with triangular facets and wineglass canyons and have slip rates of 0.1 to 0.8 mm/yr. Based on limited data, the average vertical displacement-per-event is about 1.0 to 1.5 m. These faults are characterized by recurrence intervals of thousands to tens of thousands …

Split Knowledge Level Modeling, Michael A. Zang, Jens G. Pohl Oct 2003

Split Knowledge Level Modeling, Michael A. Zang, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

Traditional approaches to building intelligent information systems employ an object model to define a representational structure for the information of interest within the target domain of the system. At runtime, the model provides a constrained template for the creation of the individual object instances and relationships that together define the state of the system at a given point in time. The ontology also provides a vocabulary for expressing domain knowledge typically in the form of rules (declarative knowledge) or methods (procedural knowledge). Agents operating within the system utilize the encoded knowledge to progress the state of the system towards the …

Notable 19th Century American Accountants That Could Be Considered For The Accounting Hall-Of-Fame, George C. Romeo

Accounting Historians Notebook

In America, the 19th century marked the beginning of substantial economic changes (development of the vast railroad system, industrialization, and unsatiated demand for capital), providing an environment conducive to the establishment of a new profession, public accountancy. There were many accounting pioneers in the United States who helped the accounting profession develop during this transitional period. Many of the 19th century American accountants are not as well known as their 20th century counterparts, and only two accountants who worked primarily in the 19th century are currently in the Hall of Fame; Charles E. Sprague and Charles Haskins. Until recently, there …

Stability In The Proportion Of Harbor Seals Hauled Out Under Locally Ideal Conditions, Michael Simpkins, David Withrow, Jack Cesarone, Peter Boveng Oct 2003

Stability In The Proportion Of Harbor Seals Hauled Out Under Locally Ideal Conditions, Michael Simpkins, David Withrow, Jack Cesarone, Peter Boveng

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

We monitored the haul-out behavior of 68 radio-tagged harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) during the molt season at two Alaskan haul-out sites (Grand Island, August-September 1994; Nanvak Bay, August-September 2000). For each site, we created a statistical model of the proportion of seals hauled out as a function of date, time of day, tide, and weather covariates. Using these models, we identified the conditions that would result in the greatest proportion of seals hauled out. Although those “ideal conditions” differed between sites, the proportion of seals predicted to be hauled out under those conditions was very similar (81.3% for …
