Ontology-Based Extraction Of Rdf Data From The World Wide Web, Timothy Adam Chartrand Mar 2003

Ontology-Based Extraction Of Rdf Data From The World Wide Web, Timothy Adam Chartrand

Theses and Dissertations

The simplicity and proliferation of the World Wide Web (WWW) has taken the availability of information to an unprecedented level. The next generation of the Web, the Semantic Web, seeks to make information more usable by machines by introducing a more rigorous structure based on ontologies. One hinderance to the Semantic Web is the lack of existing semantically marked-up data. Until there is a critical mass of Semantic Web data, few people will develop and use Semantic Web applications. This project helps promote the Semantic Web by providing content. We apply existing information-extraction techniques, in particular, the BYU ontologybased data-extraction …

Clark County Gis Vulnerability Assessment Project: Looking Ahead, Designing Mitigation, And Managing Uncertainty, David M. Hassenzahl Mar 2003

Clark County Gis Vulnerability Assessment Project: Looking Ahead, Designing Mitigation, And Managing Uncertainty, David M. Hassenzahl

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research

After reviewing the progress of the Clark County GIS Vulnerability Project to date, it appears to me that now is an appropriate time to look to the end of the project, and use that to shape the next several steps. The NOAA guidelines may still have use, but it is more important that the project make progress than that it meet particular prescriptive steps.

Pregnancy, Drug Testing, And The Fourth Amendment: Legal And Behavioral Implications, Brian H. Bornstein Mar 2003

Pregnancy, Drug Testing, And The Fourth Amendment: Legal And Behavioral Implications, Brian H. Bornstein

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

In its efforts to protect the health of unborn children, the government is increasingly attempting to regulate pregnant women’s conduct. As with other policies affecting pregnant women’s autonomy, these policies have constitutional overtones. In Ferguson v. City of Charleston (2001), the Supreme Court struck down a South Carolina hospital’s policy of testing pregnant women for cocaine and turning positive results over to law enforcement for prosecution. This article discusses the basis of the decision and its legal and behavioral implications. Although the decision came down on the side of pregnant women’s rights, it left unresolved the issue of whether a …

Name Trouble - Part Two, Frank Bramlett Mar 2003

Name Trouble - Part Two, Frank Bramlett

English Faculty Publications

While Shakespeare was busy with names in Romeo and Juliet, Europeans began exploring and settling the New World and immediately ran into the problem of naming. For instance, what should they call those enormous mammals that look sort of like cows but are larger, stronger, and furrier? Buflalo? Bison? Tatanka? And what should they call all the people they kept running into? Tradition holds that Christopher Columbus started it. He was confused because of geography; he thought he had found India, so he called the native people he met by the Spanish word indios, the English …

Use Of Fuzzy Expert's Information In Measurement And What We Can Gain From Its Application In Geophysics, Leon Reznik, Vladik Kreinovich, Scott A. Starks

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The paper considers the problem of measurement information fusion from different sources, when one of the sources is an information about approximate values of the measured variables or their combinations. The information is given with fuzzy models and is used in combination with the measurement results. The properties of the modified estimates are studied in comparison with the conventional ones. The conditions when an expert's information application can give a high gain are derived, the gain value is estimated, the recommendations to an expert on making predictions are given. The possible gain in measurement result efficiency in geophysical applications is …

Military Imagery In Preaching: An Effective Means Of Nurturing A Lutheran Identity In The Military, Mark Steiner Mar 2003

Military Imagery In Preaching: An Effective Means Of Nurturing A Lutheran Identity In The Military, Mark Steiner

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

This major applied project consisted of two parts: a research component addressing the theoretical application of military imagery in preaching to a Lutheran military audience and an evaluative process, which tested the application of military imagery in preaching. The theoretical component, based upon the contributions of literature on cross cultural studies, leadership, strategic planning, rhetoric, and homiletics, recommended a homiletical strategy for preaching military imagery. The evaluative component validated the application of military imagery in preaching and recommended a strategy for promoting organic unity of military imagery with the other elements of the worship service.

An Interpretive Exploration Of The Meaning Of Being With Women During Birth For Midwives, Lauren P. Hunter Phd Mar 2003

An Interpretive Exploration Of The Meaning Of Being With Women During Birth For Midwives, Lauren P. Hunter Phd

Dissertations

This study explored the meaning of the phenomenon of the midwife's experience of being present with a woman during childbirth. The value and importance of being with a woman during childbirth, specific and unique to midwifery care, is reflected in midwifery philosophies and models of care. This study looked through the lens of midwives who have written poetry about births they have attended to learn more about the experience of being with a woman. Hermeneutical phenomenology was selected for the philosophical methodology and method because it looked at both the phenomenon and the use of language to describe the phenomenon. …

Stepping Out Of The Classroom To Increase Spanish Language Skills And Cultural Awareness, Betina Kaplan, Teresa Pérez-Gamboa Mar 2003

Stepping Out Of The Classroom To Increase Spanish Language Skills And Cultural Awareness, Betina Kaplan, Teresa Pérez-Gamboa

Dimensions

This article describes the experience of our college-level Spanish students who stepped out of their campus classrooms and into elementary school libraries, corridors, and classrooms to develop an exchange program. Chase Street Elementary School, like many other elementary schools in Athens, Georgia, has a large Hispanic student population composed mostly of recent immigrants with limited English proficiency. This experience served not only the Hispanic community of Athens, but our college students as well. Our students contribute to the reduction of the language barrier that separates teachers from students and their families, and, at the same time, they have the unique …

Merging Foreign Language Theory And Practice In Designing Technology-Based Tasks, Lara Lomicka, Gillian Lord, Melanie Manzer Mar 2003

Merging Foreign Language Theory And Practice In Designing Technology-Based Tasks, Lara Lomicka, Gillian Lord, Melanie Manzer

Dimensions

While educators are aware of the benefits of technology in language instruction, one challenge they face is how to implement effective interactive technology-based tasks. Technology offers numerous advantages, yet it is not without some drawbacks. Terry (1998) notes that the purpose of using technology should be clear and pedagogical; it should not be used “to fill (or kill) time” (p. 282). The goal of this article is to integrate the theory of technology instruction with the creation of well-designed tasks. To that end, we examine recent research in computer-assisted language learning (CALL) as well as online learning. We offer ideas …

The Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) is a nonprofit organization representing 57 chief education officers who, through the Council of Chief State School Officers, are responsible for setting state education policy. INTASC standards address what beginning teachers should know, how they should behave, and what they should be able to do. At the present time, 33 states and territories are members of INTASC. In May 2002, a committee of 18 practicing teachers and teacher educators with expertise in a variety of languages and nominated by their professional organizations completed the drafting of the INTASC Foreign Language Standards …

Alternative Teacher Preparation Programs In Foreign Languages, Anja Bernardy, Elaine Mcallister Mar 2003

Alternative Teacher Preparation Programs In Foreign Languages, Anja Bernardy, Elaine Mcallister

Dimensions

For the past 20 years educators have debated whether alternative teacher certification, or preparation, is a valid solution to the critical shortage now facing the profession. In foreign language education, Kennesaw State University (KSU) has developed an alternative preparation program designed to give candidates the same knowledge, skills, and dispositions imparted in traditional undergraduate preparation and to hold these individuals to the same standards required of undergraduates in foreign language education. This article describes the program, discusses the disadvantages and rewards of the assessment plan, and offers observations on the future of nontraditional preparation of teachers.

The Face Of The Future: Engaging In Diversity At Laguardia Community College, Gail O. Mellow, Phyllis E. Vanslyck, Bret Eynon Mar 2003

The Face Of The Future: Engaging In Diversity At Laguardia Community College, Gail O. Mellow, Phyllis E. Vanslyck, Bret Eynon

Publications and Research

Non-traditional, first generation, college students are changing the face of higher education in the United States. More than one third of today's students are minorities, eighty percent of those are employed and attending school part-time and more than one quarter are single parents. Diversity at LaGuardia means many things besides culture, ethnicity or nationality. It also refers to age, social background, fluency in English, academic expectations, learning styles and academic preparation. We argue here that we need to rethink curriculum in relation to this new understanding of diversity.
