Book Review: Destructive Messages: How Hate Speech Paves the Way for Harmful Social Movements, Alexander Tsesis, New York: New York University Press, 2002, 246 pages.

A review of Alexander Tsesis's Destructive Messages: How Hate Speech Paves the Way for Harmful Social Movements, New York University Press, 2002. At one level, Alexander Tsesis's thesis is simply one in a long line of arguments about the need to regulate racist speech. Yet on another level, it is fundamentally different from much American literature on "hate speech" because Tsesis draws on a broad historical swath, and because he contends that the United States …

Subgrouping Poor Readers On The Basis Of Individual Differences In Reading-Related Abilities, Hugh W. Catts, Tiffany Hogan, Marc E. Fey Mar 2003

Subgrouping Poor Readers On The Basis Of Individual Differences In Reading-Related Abilities, Hugh W. Catts, Tiffany Hogan, Marc E. Fey

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

The present study investigated the use of the Reading Component Model to subgroup poor readers. A large sample of poor readers was identified in second grade and subgrouped on the basis of relative strengths and weaknesses in word recognition and listening comprehension. Although homogeneous subgroups were not identified, poor readers could be classified into four subgroups that differed significantly in reading-related abilities. Further analyses showed that poor readers’ strengths and weaknesses in listening comprehension, and to a lesser extent in word recognition, were foreshadowed by their abilities on related kindergarten measures. Follow- up testing in the fourth grade indicated that …

Cyberspace, Y2k: Giant Robots, Asian Punks, Rachel Rubin Mar 2003

Cyberspace, Y2k: Giant Robots, Asian Punks, Rachel Rubin

Institute for Asian American Studies Publications

On the eve of the 21st century, a group of young Asian American writers bravely announced—tongue partially in cheek, in keeping with the aesthetic of sincere irony that characterizes the so-called Generation X—their recreation of “a monster.” This announcement, posted on the internet (at www.gidra.net), was drafted by the “editorial recollective” of Gidra, a samizdat (self-published) monthly newsletter launched thirty years earlier by a group of UCLA students who wanted a forum where they could address the particular concerns and issues facing Asian Pacific Americans in the Vietnam War era. Writers and editors of a new Gidra declared in …

Creating A Language Learning Community Within And Beyond The Classroom, Denise M. Overfield Mar 2003

Creating A Language Learning Community Within And Beyond The Classroom, Denise M. Overfield

Dimensions

This article describes an interdisciplinary project that joins a popular curricular model, the learning community, with an increasingly popular pedagogical technique, community-based learning. The combination of the two gives students the opportunity to use language as both an object of and tool for learning, thus situating language at the heart of the learning experience. The development of a learning community creates a curricular space in which faculty and students work together as novices and experts in a specific situation to resolve linguistic and sociocultural issues. This article presents the field experience of 1st-year nursing students who were enrolled in a …

Dorothy Smith And Knowing The World We Live In, Marie Campbell

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The paper presents an account of the scholarly work of Canadian sociologist, feminist, theorist and activist, Dorothy E. Deception Detection In A Computer-Mediated Environment: Gender, Trust, And Training Issues, Monica A. Dziubinski Mar 2003

Deception Detection In A Computer-Mediated Environment: Gender, Trust, And Training Issues, Monica A. Dziubinski

Theses and Dissertations

The Department of Defense is increasingly relying on computer-mediated communications to conduct business. This reliance introduces an amplified vulnerability to strategic information manipulation, or deception. This research draws on communication and deception literature to develop a conceptual model proposing relationships between deception detection abilities in a computer-mediated environment, gender, trust, and training. An experiment was conducted with 119 communications personnel to test the proposed hypotheses. No relationship between gender or trust and deception detection accuracy was found. Partial support was found showing that training improves deception detection accuracy. The most significant finding was that individual’s deception detection abilities deteriorate in …

Regulation By Networks, Amitai Aviram Mar 2003

Regulation By Networks, Amitai Aviram

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

The private ordering literature examines how nongovernment institutions mitigate opportunistic behavior in transactions. It emphasizes two elements that facilitate cooperation and reduce opportunism: repeated play and reputation. This paper explores the implications of a third element: network effects. Network effects create an incentive for a unique form of opportunism that exists only in network environments—degradation. On the other hand, network effects facilitate mechanisms that may be very effective in mitigating opportunism. Therefore, in certain industries, networks mitigate opportunism, largely displacing in that role the parties to the transaction and the government. This paper identifies mechanisms used by networks to reduce …

Nobel In Literature 2000 Gao Xingjian's Aesthetics Of Fleeing, Mabel Lee Mar 2003

Nobel In Literature 2000 Gao Xingjian's Aesthetics Of Fleeing, Mabel Lee

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper, "Nobel in Literature 2000 Gao Xingjian's Aesthetics of Fleeing," Mabel Lee explores the aesthetic dimensions of Gao Xingjian's play Taowang (Fleeing 1990), and its significance in establishing the recurring motif of "fleeing" in Gao's later writings on literature. Lee argues that the intensely emotional times during which Gao wrote Fleeing were comparable to those seventy years earlier confronting May Fourth writers. Urging his compatriots not to be "bystanders," Lu Xun, the most influential of May Fourth writers, had chosen to allow his creative self to suicide, as shown in the prose-poems of Yecao (Wild Grass 1927). For …

Nobel In Literature 2002 Imre Kertész's Aesthetics Of The Holocaust, Sára Molnár Mar 2003

Nobel In Literature 2002 Imre Kertész's Aesthetics Of The Holocaust, Sára Molnár

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper, "Nobel in Literature 2002 Imre Kertész's Aesthetics of the Holocaust," Sára Molnár discusses aspects of Nobel Laureate Imre Kertész's reception in Hungary. In her analysis, Molnár discusses aesthetic features of the author's use of language. Molnár's study illuminates the problem of authorship and questions relating to intersections of fiction and autobiography in Kertész's oeuvre. Molnár's argument is that although the author's personal history is indeed important in his texts, this "author" should not be identified with Kertész himself and that although Kertész's themes and subjects appear to be autobiographical, not even his diaries should or can be …

Political Leadership Perceptions On The College Of Micronesia System In The Federated States Of Micronesia, Elizabeth Diaz Rechebei Edd

Dissertations

Political leaders who establish policies and priorities for the nation have influence on how the FSM's sole postsecondary education institution, the College of Micronesia, Federated States of Micronesia (COM-FSM) sets its goals and priorities. During this critical juncture of the FSM nation's growth and its effort to be self-reliant, COM-FSM's purposes and priorities are intricately related to the ongoing processes toward self-reliance. Using a case study methodology, this study examined the perceptions of political leaders in the Federated States of Micronesia relating to the purposes and priorities of the College of Micronesia-Federated States of Micronesia (COM-FSM), and the four campuses …

The Bare Metaphysical Possibility Of Bare Dispositions, Jennifer Mckitrick Mar 2003

The Bare Metaphysical Possibility Of Bare Dispositions, Jennifer Mckitrick

Department of Philosophy: Faculty Publications

When people ask why something produces a certain effect, they are often looking for a deeper explanation than just "because it is disposed to produce that effect." The inability to produce a deeper explanation, on this view, reflects ignorance or a failure of understanding. It is supposed that there must be something other than the disposition that causally explains the manifestation, or to use terminology that is now common, every disposition must have a distinct "causal basis." There is something puzzling about the idea of a bare disposition--a disposition that has no distinct causal basis. Some have argued that the …

Multimission Aircraft Design Study, Payload, Ahmet Kahraman

Theses and Dissertations

It is proposed that a Multi-Mission Aircraft (MMA) be prepared to combine some or all the functions of the aging AWACS, JSTARS, RIVET JOINT, COMPASS CALL, and AECCC fleet. Three different thesis studies have been developed by three Air Force Institute of Technology GSE students to show the feasibility of replacing the current aging fleet with one or more MMA platforms. This is the thesis in which the payload issuer have been examined. Within this thesis, two different alternative architectures, which are One Tail Number and Different Tail Numbers including nine different configurations, have been considered. Estimated payload characteristics of …

Efficient Decomposition Of Large Fuzzy Functions And Relations, Paul Burkey, Marek Perkowski Mar 2003

Efficient Decomposition Of Large Fuzzy Functions And Relations, Paul Burkey, Marek Perkowski

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper presents a new approach to decomposition of fuzzy functions. A tutorial background on fuzzy logic representations is first given to emphasize next the simplicity and generality of this new approach. Ashenhurst-like decomposition of fuzzy functions was discussed in [3] but it was not suitable for programming and was not programmed. In our approach, fuzzy functions are converted to multiple-valued functions and decomposed using an mv decomposer. Then the decomposed multiple-valued functions are converted back to fuzzy functions. This approach allows for Curtis-like decompositions with arbitrary number of intermediate fuzzy variables, that have been not presented for fuzzy functions …

Translation Studies And Agamben's Theory Of The Potential, Paolo Bartoloni Mar 2003

Translation Studies And Agamben's Theory Of The Potential, Paolo Bartoloni

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "Translation Studies and Agamben's Theory of the Potential," Paolo Bartoloni discusses the interstitial space of translation by drawing on literary and philosophical preoccupations, especially Giorgio Agamben's notion of "potentiality." The first part of the article is devolved to defining and discussing "potentiality" and the significance that it has for a general re-thinking of translation theory. Bartoloni moves on to ask what would happen if the focus of translation shifts from the final product, or from the relation between the original and the translation, to the process of translating, that is the middle ground, the in-betweenness where two …
