Children At Promise: An Investigation Of The Perceived Presence Of Supportive Relationships In The Life Of A Child And That Child's Ability To Perceive The Benefits Of Adversity, Timothy S. Stuart

Education Dissertations

The central purpose of this study is to determine whether there is a correlation between the presence of supportive relationships in a child's life and his or her ability to perceive the benefits of adversity in his or her life. Other possible predictors of a child's ability to perceive the benefits of adversity are explored through a hierarchical multiple regression analysis.

One hundred and forty six (n = 146) high school students were surveyed using the At Promise Survey. The data was collected and statistically analyzed. The perceived presence of supportive relationships in a child's life, and the importance of …

Right Hemisphere Effects On Language Processing: Suppression Or Activation Deficit, Sarah A. Orjada

Masters Theses

This study was designed to add to the body of research that examines the possibility of semantic activation or suppression deficits as underlying right hemisphere communication disorders. Modified treatment techniques for activation and suppression deficits proposed by Myers (1999) were used as stimuli for the experimental tasks. A total of four RHD participants and four control participants matched in age, gender, and level of education were included in the study. The study aimed to answer the following questions. Do RHD or control participants have higher scores on the suppression tasks? Do RHD participants have longer reaction times? Do RHD or …

Outcomes Of Individual Vs. Group Instruction In Efnep, Jamie Dollahite, Michelle Scott-Pierce Apr 2003

Outcomes Of Individual Vs. Group Instruction In Efnep, Jamie Dollahite, Michelle Scott-Pierce

Journal of Extension

This article presents an analysis of self-reported behavioral outcomes from three years' of New York State EFNEP evaluation data. Participant instruction has shifted from a primarily one-on-one format to group instruction because of staff safety concerns and the impact of welfare reform on recruitment, as well as financial constraints. The question is raised regarding the cost-effectiveness of group education as currently delivered. If groups are unavoidable in the current climate, educators need to identify strategies to maximize impact among participants educated in group settings.

The Immediate Effects Of Vestibular Stimulation On The Language Performance Of A Child With Autism, Jennifer L. Sova Apr 2003

The Immediate Effects Of Vestibular Stimulation On The Language Performance Of A Child With Autism, Jennifer L. Sova

Masters Theses

There is a proposed link between sensory processing abilities and language performance in children with autism. Research evaluating such a relationship is limited. This study sought to evaluate the hypothesis that language expression is facilitated by the application of vestibular stimulation in a child with autism. The purpose of the present study was to implement language interaction techniques and measure the outcome of language performance in a 4-year-old child with autism and sensory integration dysfunction. The child was evaluated in regards to vestibular stimulation and its facilitative effect on language production for social communicative purposes. Direct observation was used to …

Freedom Of Choice And Hypnotic Communication In Psychotherapy And Public Address, Richard German Ellsworth Apr 2003

Freedom Of Choice And Hypnotic Communication In Psychotherapy And Public Address, Richard German Ellsworth

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Historical, theoretical and methodological aspects of clinical hypnosis relevant to free agency are reviewed, including therapeutic hypnotic communication techniques used by effective public speakers. Hypnosis is defined as specific techniques to capture and hold someone's attention, and is herein considered as simply a more sophisticated method of communication " which some effective public speakers and therapists do naturally, but which with study of these effective communication forms, therapists and speakers may learn to do with greater facility. Methods of applying specific hynotic techniques to enhance the efficacy of psychotherapy and public address are demonstrated, including indirect suggestion, rapport, presupposition, embedded …

To Be Or Not To Be Ideophonically Impoverished, Janis B. Nuckolls Apr 2003

To Be Or Not To Be Ideophonically Impoverished, Janis B. Nuckolls

Faculty Publications

This paper addresses a current debate over the universality of ideophones, a class of expressions that are used to simulate, through performative foregrounding, the salient processes and perceptions of everyday life experience. Using data from Quechua-speaking Runa in Amazonian Ecuador, I argue for a view of ideophones as a type of cultural discourse through which speakers align themselves with nonhuman life forms and forces of nature. This alignment is suggested by the special performative properties of ideophones, which collapse the distinction between a speech event and a narrated event, thus compelling a speaker to become an action, event, or process, …

The Myth Of Science As A ‘Neutral Arbiter’ For Triggering Precautions, Vern R. Walker Apr 2003

The Myth Of Science As A ‘Neutral Arbiter’ For Triggering Precautions, Vern R. Walker

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

This article demonstrates that science cannot be a "neutral arbiter" for triggering precautionary measures, because both making and warranting findings of risk require non-scientific decisions. Making a risk finding requires decisions about the meaning of "risk of harm," about the meaning of any modifiers for that predicate, and about the degree of confidence asserted for the finding as a whole. Determining that the available scientific evidence warrants a finding of risk requires decisions about acceptable degrees of various types of uncertainty namely, conceptual uncertainty, measurement uncertainty, sampling uncertainty, modeling uncertainty, and causal uncertainty. This article illustrates these decisions using examples …

Waivers Of State Sovereign Immunity And The Ideology Of The Eleventh Amendment, Jonathan R. Siegel Apr 2003

Waivers Of State Sovereign Immunity And The Ideology Of The Eleventh Amendment, Jonathan R. Siegel

Duke Law Journal

States normally enjoy immunity from suit by private parties, but they may waive this immunity. The Supreme Court's steady contraction of other exceptions to the rule of state sovereign immunity has renewed interest in the previously little-discussed possibilities of waiver. This Article explores the boundaries of waiver doctrine. This Article shows that, prior to 1945, the Supreme Court-even as it enforced a broad, substantive rule of state sovereign immunity-applied a sensible doctrine of waiver that balanced the interests of states with those of private parties and the federal judicial system. The Court's traditional doctrine treated state sovereign immunity like the …

Evidence Of The Establishment Of Cotesia Flavipes (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), A Parasitoid Of Cereal Stemborers, And Its Host Range Expansion In Ethiopia, E. Getu, W. A. Overholt, E. Kairu, C. O. Omwega Apr 2003

Evidence Of The Establishment Of Cotesia Flavipes (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), A Parasitoid Of Cereal Stemborers, And Its Host Range Expansion In Ethiopia, E. Getu, W. A. Overholt, E. Kairu, C. O. Omwega

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Three lepidopteran cereal stemborers, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Crambidae), Busseola fusca Fuller, and Sesamia calamistis Hampson (Noctuidae) were collected from maize and sorghum in Ethiopia. The noctuid stemborers are indigenous to Africa while C. partellus is an introduced species from Asia. In 1999, the Asian stemborer parasitoid, Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Braconidae) was found to be widespread in Ethiopia, even though it had never been released in the country. In addition to attacking Chilo partellus, Cotesia flavipes was reared from B. fusca and S. calamistis. The origin of C. flavipes in Ethiopia may have been Somalia where it was released in 1997 …

Lbj, The Rhetoric Of Transcendence, And The Civil Rights Act Of 1968, Steven R. Goldzwig

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

The Civil Rights Act of 1968 was the result of a complex convergence of presidential public persuasion in a context of increasing domestic violence associated with a series of summer disturbances and the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. Analysis of Lyndon Johnson's public discourse supporting the 1968 Civil Rights Act reveals that rhetorical transcendence was employed as a recurrent strategy in attempts to pass legislation.

How Mediation Is Used By Alternative Dispute Resolution Organizations To Resolve Racial Conflict, Pam Hogan Apr 2003

How Mediation Is Used By Alternative Dispute Resolution Organizations To Resolve Racial Conflict, Pam Hogan

Master's Theses

This study reports findings of interviews with volunteer mediators for Community Boards, a dispute resolution organization in the city of San Francisco, California, describing their approach to participating as panel members in multiethnic mediations.

The study demonstrates a notable difference in the approaches taken by mediators when race is identified as a point of contention in a mediation. The data show experience and ethnicity as variables in these responses. The findings further suggest that most mediators believe they require further training to feel equipped and comfortable in their handling of such mediations.

Reflections On Civil Liberties In An Age Of Counterterrorism, Conor Gearty Apr 2003

Reflections On Civil Liberties In An Age Of Counterterrorism, Conor Gearty

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article examines the historical origins of civil liberties and shows their importance to systems of government rooted in the principles of representative democracy. It argues that the subject of civil liberties needs to be distinguished from issues related to criminal justice and human rights, and that too broad a deployment of the language of civil liberties can lead to the importance of civil liberties being underappreciated by the wider public. The article considers how the integrity of the language of civil liberties and the representative system of democracy as a whole can be preserved in the face of the …

The War On Terror: Constitutional Governance In A State Of Permanent Warfare, W. Wesley Pue

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article assesses Canada's principal legal responses to the challenge presented by terrorism in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States. A review of major federal "anti-terrorism" legislation reveals a legislative response that fundamentally violates core constitutional principles while failing to significantly enhance public safety.

The Spanish copula of seriestar has not only been a heavily investigated topic In Hispanic linguistics throughout the past century (Crespo, 1946; De Mello, 1979; Franco & Steinmetz, 1983), but it has actually been receiving much attention for more than eight hundred years (Vaii6-Cerda, 1982). The serlestar verb copula is equivalent to only one verb in many other languages, such as English, in which both ser and estar are translated as 'to be.' Whereas in English we explain and describe existence, location, and state with the use of the one simple verb, 'to be,' Spanish speakers face a decision between …

Law's Non-Existent Empire, Jeanne L. Schroeder, David G. Carlson Apr 2003

Law's Non-Existent Empire, Jeanne L. Schroeder, David G. Carlson

Articles

The article critiques Pierre Schlag's normative legal thought, arguing that while his descriptive critique of law as a fiction is accurate, his normative proposal to abolish law is contradictory and flawed. By incorporating Lacanian psychoanalysis, the authors contend that law, as part of the symbolic order, is constitutive of subjectivity and cannot be abolished. They propose that legal scholarship should instead focus on exposing law's role in shaping subjectivity rather than seeking to eliminate it. The analysis emphasizes that law, like language, is an intersubjective system sustained by collective belief, despite lacking a concrete foundation.

Pierre The Anomalist: An Epistemology Of The Legal Closet, Peter Goodrich Apr 2003

Pierre The Anomalist: An Epistemology Of The Legal Closet, Peter Goodrich

Articles

The article examines Pierre Schlag's radical critique of legal reason and the legal academy, which challenges the profession's reliance on abstract norms and universal truths. Schlag's work, often met with hostility, exposes the material and emotional underpinnings of legal discourse, particularly the fear of losing control and status tied to the academy's faith in reason. His critique is situated within broader philosophical traditions that question the limits of reason and the importance of creativity in legal thought. The article also explores how Schlag's ideas intersect with other scholars' work, such as Reginald Leamon Robinson's analysis of legal narrative and identity, …

Seeing Beyond The End Of The World In Strange Days And Until The End Of The World, S. Brent Plate, Tod Linafelt Apr 2003

Seeing Beyond The End Of The World In Strange Days And Until The End Of The World, S. Brent Plate, Tod Linafelt

Journal of Religion & Film

Herein we offer a critique of contemporary filmic visions of apocalypse. The problem with many Hollywood-style apocalyptic films is that they expect the end of the world to be a spectacular end of the whole world. Against this, by reviewing two contemporary films (Strange Days and Until the End of the World) we suggest that apocalypse may take on a greater significance if we understand that there are many worlds, and that rather than expecting the end of the world, we should be more vigilant in our examinations of the endings of a world. With this in mind, …

The Unholy Biblical Subtexts And Other Religious Elements Built Into Superman: The Movie (1978) And Superman Ii (1981), Anton K. Kozlovic Apr 2003

The Unholy Biblical Subtexts And Other Religious Elements Built Into Superman: The Movie (1978) And Superman Ii (1981), Anton K. Kozlovic

Journal of Religion & Film

The sacred-secular parallels between Jesus Christ and Kal-El/Clark Kent/Superman in Superman: The Movie (1978) and Superman II (1981) were explicated previously in the Journal of Religion & Film. This research was followed by the identification of additional holy, but non-christic subtexts built into the films to complement Superman as a Christ-figure. However, the sacred-secular parallels did not stop there. In addition to this persuasive array of positive holy figurations, complementary unholy religious subtexts were also built into the films. They were designed to counterpoint the alien Messiah and his positive pals, plus accentuate the evilness of the unholy Kryptonian …
