Classroom Discourse At The University Level: Negotiation Across Disciplines, Maria Isabel R. D. Barros May 2003

Classroom Discourse At The University Level: Negotiation Across Disciplines, Maria Isabel R. D. Barros

Student Work

This thesis analyzes classroom discourse at the university departments of English, mathematics and education in order to investigate the effect of power relationships and frames on the practice of negotiation. I examine the power relations and frames in discourse through the analysis of classes that consist solely of lecture or both lecture and whole class discussion, and identify three levels of frames in classroom discourse. Academic speech reflects the asymmetric power relations between instructor and students. In the analysis, I examine passages of transcripts that reveal alteration to the IRE (initiation, response, evaluation) pattern of classroom discourse and claim that …

Trademark Distinctiveness In A Multilingual Context: Harmonization Of The Treatment Of Marks In The European Union And The United States, Eric E. Bowman

San Diego International Law Journal

This Comment will examine the similarities and differences between the trademark protection laws with regard to the multi-cultural nature of the consuming public of the European Union and that of the United States, and then will recommend ways in which the laws can be harmonized to promote the congruent development and expansion of economic activities globally. This harmonization is necessary in light of the interplay between these schemes for protection of marks and the protection provided under the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property, the Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Marks, and the Madrid Protocol. The …

Data were obtained from interviews with 12 planned lesbian-parent families. Data analysis included interviews with the parents as well as analysis of 48 of the children's drawings and the stories …

Word Order In Biblical Hebrew Poetry, Sherry Lynn Fariss May 2003

Word Order In Biblical Hebrew Poetry, Sherry Lynn Fariss

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

Syntacticians generally focus on prose texts of a language when studying word order rather than examining poetry. The general consensus is that the stylization of poetry exercises too great an influence on the text to allow for regular word order. In their study of pragmatics, particularly in obsolete languages, Herring (2000) and Hock (2000) demonstrate that even in poetry syntactic patterns can be seen in different genres or text types. Herring's contention in Old Tamil poetry is that the more poetic the genre, the more word order variation can be expected. By the same token, the more informational the genre, …

The Structure Of Nominalization In Burmese, Paulette M. Hopple May 2003

The Structure Of Nominalization In Burmese, Paulette M. Hopple

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

Nominalized sentential elements have long been observed in Tibeto-Burman languages, but the role and extent of nominalized patterns have not been explored as a base of formative structuring. This dissertation examines nominalization patterns in Burmese from the word to text level and posits a complex information packaging role of postposition particles in erecting a structure of predictable and iteratively patterned nominals which function to reduce information overload and facilitate online parsing. Burmese has been characterized as a predominantly verbal language (U Pe Maung Tin 1956). A complementary view is presented in which ontological objects created via a grammatical system of …

Worldview As A Key To Understanding Spiritual Warfare With The Emphasis On Sanctification And Evangelism, Albert Kwamena Essandoh May 2003

Worldview As A Key To Understanding Spiritual Warfare With The Emphasis On Sanctification And Evangelism, Albert Kwamena Essandoh

College of Theology and Ministry Dissertations, Projects, & Theses

An examination of current literary works on spiritual warfare within this decade shows that there has been a struggle in understanding the issues that evolve under this subject. Missiologists have presented reports that baffle western theologians; however. these phenomena are not new to the non-westem reader, and they persist. Most western theologians who have not encountered these phenomena discount these experiences, presenting arguments from a sanctification point of view.

Renowned contemporary scholars whose perspectives on worldviews, sanctification, and evangelism contribute to this research include Peter Wagner, Clinton Arnold, Derek Tidball, Howard Ervin, James Sire, John Stott, Andrew W. Hoffecker, Russell …

“Word Made Flesh”: Czech Women’S Writing From Communism To Post-Communism, Madelaine Hron

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article explores the changes in Czech women’s fiction from communism to post- communism, focusing in particular on Czech women writers’ relationship to literary discourse and feminism. It contends that women writers’ rapport to ideological discourse and literary production under communism is a determining factor in women’s relationship to both writing and feminism. It examines this literary legacy in terms of post-communism, surveying the differences between a totalitarian socialist regime and that of a materialist, capitalist economy, as exemplified in Czech women’s literature. The article offers a survey the major post-communist women writers, including Hodrová, Boučková, Kriseová, as well as …

Computer Science Publications

For many years, spatial querying has been of interest for the researchers in the GIS community. Any successful implementation and long-term viability of the GIS technology depends on the issue of accuracy of spatial queries. In order to improve the accuracy and quality of spatial querying, the problems associated with the areas of fuzziness and uncertainty need to be addressed. There has been a strong demand to provide approaches that deal with inaccuracy and uncertainty in GIS. In this paper, we develop an approach that can perform fuzzy spatial querying under uncertainty. An inexact inferencing strategy for objects with determined …

The Word Out : A Stylistic Analysis Of Rap Music, Claudia Coscarello

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Rap music is a particular socioculturally bound music phenomenon that was conceived on the streets and birthed within the African-American communities in the urban boroughs of New York City during the 1970's. It was developed as a particular kind of linguistic self expression in the form of music for African- American youth. Rap music is a display of ethnic creativity and cultural pride which gives expression to a speech community's voice as it declares the stark reality of urban life.

For close to three decades, rap music has maintained its position at the forefront of the youth culture across the …

Echoes In A Concrete Canyon : Graham, Cummings, And Apollinaire, Robin L. Adams-Hays May 2003

Echoes In A Concrete Canyon : Graham, Cummings, And Apollinaire, Robin L. Adams-Hays

Theses and Dissertations

This study explores the poetry of Jorie Graham, E.E. Cummings, and Guillaume Apollinaire, focusing particularly on the rich tradition of concrete and visual poetry and the concept of rule breaking in writing. The connection between Cummings, taking elements of visual poetry and free verse to experimental new heights with typographic techniques, and Apollinaire, whose poetry explores similar aesthetic challenges, is obvious. Graham may seem to be the one who doesn't belong, but part of my emphasis is to demonstrate how she does fit into this study. Her poetry, as is Cummings' and Apollinaire's, is as visual as it is audible. …

Learning That Matters, Shelley H. Billig May 2003

Learning That Matters, Shelley H. Billig

Special Topics, General

In Georgia, kindergarten and first-grade students conduct a community mapping activity to figure out the needs of the children within the school. Kindergartners new to the school say that the school layout is confusing and it is hard to find their way to the classrooms. Each class considers solutions, and students decide to label the hallways with street signs. Each class brainstorms potential names for the hallways, and first grade students design and conduct a survey. They eliminate names that do not represent positive images. (No Shock Street because it would scare the five-year-olds.) The surveys are administered, the data …

Review Of The Korean Alphabet Of 1446, David J. Silva May 2003

Review Of The Korean Alphabet Of 1446, David J. Silva

Linguistics & TESOL Faculty Publications & Presentations - Archive

Perhaps the most noteworthy product of Korean civilization, han'guil is a source of pride among Koreans: not only does it embody a sense of national uniqueness, but it is also a valuable tool against illiteracy. While this great cultural achievement has merited considerable attention in Korea, detailed English-language accounts of han'guil are scarce. Most prominent among this small body of work is Gari Ledyard's 1966 dissertation, "The Korean Language Reform of 1446," since republished (with modest revisions) in 1998. Two recent volumes about the Korean script are now looking to claim space alongside Ledyard's text: The Korean Alphabet of 1446, …

Theses (Pre-2016)

This thesis explores the topic of Black feminism in the nineteenth century and attempts to chronicle the suffering and perseverance of African-American slaves. The primary sources used in this research include Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin or Life Among the Lowly and Frances E. W. Harper's lola Leroy and Minnie's Sacrifice. These texts establish a central focus on Black feminism; suffering and perseverance are of vital significance in the lives of Cassy, lola and Minie respectively. This study also presents a strong focus on the historical and didactic perspectives in which suffering and perseverance are juxtaposed. Undoubtedly, the authors, …

Reframing Involuntary Population Displacement And Resettlement—The Case Of The Palestinian Refugees: Causes, Consequences, And Prospects For An Impoverishment Process Reversal, Ariella Vraneski

Peace and Conflict Studies

The Palestinian refugees issue is at the core of the Arab-Israeli multi-faceted conflict. This paper relies on a study which investigated the multi-level complexity of the Palestinian refugees case to identify the causes and consequences, and some prospects for its resolution. The study analyzed and compared frames and narratives used by the different parties at several stages of the investigated case, and also integrated lessons from two kinds of involuntary migration. During the Israeli/ Arab peace process, a transformation from exclusionary narratives and one dimensional “either/ or” solutions into a multi-optional synergistic environment was evident. The parties’ frames changed again …

Lugha Ya Taifa Kiswahili, Pan-Africanism, And Nationalism In Tanzania And The United States, Lessie Burnita Tate

Theses (Pre-2016)

The historical common elements in Tanzania and African American culture serve as links that uncover the connection between these two groups of people through time and space in this thesis. Elements of Tanzanian nationalism in African American black cultural nationalism are links that attest to the significance of this African! African American twentieth century relationship. A most obvious link between Tanzania and African Americans is language. The appearance of Kiswahili as a non-ethnic African language allowed this language to be instrumental in facilitating nationalism in Tanzania, and later surfacing in the African American community as its' unofficial adopted African language. …

Tongue-Surface Movement Patterns During Speech And Swallowing, Jordan R. Green, Yu-Tsai Wang May 2003

Tongue-Surface Movement Patterns During Speech And Swallowing, Jordan R. Green, Yu-Tsai Wang

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

The tongue has been frequently characterized as being composed of several functionally independent articulators. The question of functional regionality within the tongue was examined by quantifying the strength of coupling among four different tongue locations across a large number of consonantal contexts and participants. Tongue behavior during swallowing was also described. Vertical displacements of pellets affixed to the tongue were extracted from the x-ray microbeam database. Forty-six participants recited 20 vowel-consonant-vowel (VCV) combinations and swallowed 10 ccs of water. Tongue-surface movement patterns were quantitatively described by computing the covariance between the vertical time-histories of all possible pellet pairs. Phonemic differentiation …
