The Relationship Between The Emotional Intelligence Competencies Of Principals In The Kanawha County School System In West Virginia And Their Teachers' Perceptions Of School Climate., Leonard J. Allen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to determine if a significant relationship exists between teachers' perceptions of school climate and their principals' emotional intelligence competencies. The CFK Ltd. School Climate Profile was used to assess teachers' perceptions of school climate. Principals' emotional intelligence competencies were measured by the BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i). Teachers and principals were all employees of the Kanawha County School System in West Virginia. The entire population of principals (N = 68) and the entire population of school-based classroom teachers (N = 2081) were provided surveys. One hundred percent of the principals participated and 57% (N …

A Study Of Selected Songs By Leonard Bernstein Which Reflect His Contribution To The Evolution Of Art Song In America., Yugo Sava Ikach
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Within American vocal art music of the twentieth century, there has been an infusion of non-traditional musical traits. Some of these characteristics and idioms find their roots in American popular music and jazz. Although this phenomenon has been met with a certain amount of opposition, its presence is undeniable. The success and acceptance of this blending of styles owes much to the work of Leonard Bernstein. This paper examines a selection of Leonard Bernstein's vocal songs that in some way demonstrate this blending of styles, and notes influence of his opinions via mass media exposure. Bernstein's compositions and opinions have …

Use Of The Combination Of The Brief And Basc-2 In Assessment Of Adhd, Andrea R. Knoll
Use Of The Combination Of The Brief And Basc-2 In Assessment Of Adhd, Andrea R. Knoll
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
ADHD is one of the most frequently diagnosed childhood disorders in the United States today; however, diagnostic specificity remains challenging. Accepted models of ADHD routinely highlight the role of executive function (EF) deficits as a core feature of ADHD. However, performance based measures of EF do not consistently discriminate between ADHD and no-ADHD clinical groups. Research has supported use of the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF) in discriminating between ADHD and no-ADHD and between subtypes. However, EF deficits can occur for various reasons. Broad range behavior rating scales help identify areas of behavioral concern that may aid clinicians …
Development Agents And Nomadic Agency In The Damergou, Niger: Four Perspectives In The Development "Market", Karen Marie Greenough
Development Agents And Nomadic Agency In The Damergou, Niger: Four Perspectives In The Development "Market", Karen Marie Greenough
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Discourse between development agents and nomads implies that development for nomadiccommunities is a contradiction in terms. A "market-oriented" subtext underscores the investors'power of international agencies, the brokers' competition of intermediate organizations, and thenomadic clients' opportunism. Interviews and participant-observation focused on relationsbetween Wo??aa??e communities, bilateral and local organizations, and government extensionservices. I compare the data obtained with historical events to illuminate current phenomena.Approaches of structuration, political ecology, and disequilibrium theory aid an examination ofcommunication and discourses, and gaps in understanding between the parties. I find thatessential pastoral livelihood strategies of mobility and customary institutions are threatened bythe development system. How will …

Who Is Andrea Yates? A Short Story About Insanity, Deborah W. Denno
Who Is Andrea Yates? A Short Story About Insanity, Deborah W. Denno
Faculty Scholarship
On June 20, 2001, Andrea Yates drowned her four children in a bathtub. At Andrea’s trial, in Harris County, Texas, the prosecution’s star expert, Patrick Dietz, appeared particularly adept at persuading the jury to accept the prosecution’s assertion that Andrea was sane and acting intentionally when she killed her children. This Article analyzes the problematic aspects of Dietz's testimony in an effort to contribute some balance to the Andrea Yates story. Despite the long history of expert witnesses in criminal trials, the justice system should question the fairness and efficacy of such an unregulated storytelling process. Part I of this …

In 1992 had been teaching for four years at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. I taught voting rights and criminal procedure, subjects related to what I had done as a litigator. Preparing for class meant reading many of the same cases I had read preparing for trial. Some were even cases I had tried. Teaching offered me a fresh chance to read those cases with new interest. I could see the subtle linkages between cases that I had not previously noticed. From the distance of the academy, I observed the evolution of the doctrine without feeling overcome by the …

Understanding Ethnicity: The Relation Among Ethnic Identity, Collectivism, And Individualism In African Americans And European Americans, Ignacio David Acevedo
Understanding Ethnicity: The Relation Among Ethnic Identity, Collectivism, And Individualism In African Americans And European Americans, Ignacio David Acevedo
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
This study examined the relation among ethnic group membership, ethnic identity, collectivism and individualism in a sample of European American and African American college students. Findings suggest that African Americans are more collectivist than European Americans only in reference to their ethnic group. There were no significant differences between ethnic groups in collectivism toward friends, family, strangers or colleagues. Contrary to findings of previous research, there was no significant moderating effect of gender on collectivism differences between ethnic groups. In congruence with previous research, ethnic identity mediated the relation between ethnic group membership and collectivism toward the ethnic group. African …
Contract Theory And The Limits Of Contract Law, Alan Schwartz, Robert E. Scott
Contract Theory And The Limits Of Contract Law, Alan Schwartz, Robert E. Scott
Faculty Scholarship
Contract law has neither a complete descriptive theory, explaining what the law is, nor a complete normative theory, explaining what the law should be. These gaps are unsurprising given the traditional definition of contract as embracing all promises that the law will enforce. Even a theory of contract law that focuses only on the enforcement of bargains must still consider the entire continuum from standard form contracts between firms and consumers to commercial contracts among businesses. No descriptive theory has yet explained a law of contract that comprehends such a broad domain. Normative theories that are grounded in a single …

The Infusion Of Higher Education In The U.S. Army: A Sociolinguistic Study Of An Organizational Information Dissemination Process, Gerald Allen Kehr
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)
The present research was dedicated to uncovering sociolinguistic coupling mechanisms, specifically the metaphor, and their role in the infusion of higher education in the U S .Army It was argued that levels of ambiguity connected to inter-sociolect lexicons embedded within sociolect-specific metaphors may impede effective communication between officers and senior enlisted personnel regarding the role of higher education in the overall U. S. Army mission Information gained from this research is dedicated to the development of how the U.S military can better infuse higher education into its ongoing professional development programs. A qualitative interview method was used to conduct the …
An Inquiry Into Gardner's Theory Of Multiple Intelligences And Strengths Of Students Placed In Special Education Under Mildly Disabled Categories, Kathryn Sandiford Harrell
An Inquiry Into Gardner's Theory Of Multiple Intelligences And Strengths Of Students Placed In Special Education Under Mildly Disabled Categories, Kathryn Sandiford Harrell
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)
This study explored the strengths displayed by 4th-5th grade students placed in special education under mildly disabled categories as compared to the intelligences defined by Howard Gardner in his Theory of Multiple Intelligences (Gardner, 1983, 1999). These categories consist of Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) and Mildly Intellectually Disabled (MUD). Critics maintain that special education has been focused on the weaknesses of students while overlooking their strengths (Miller, 1993; Armstrong, 2000). Under new legislation and new performance goals for special education, the time has come to focus on students' strengths and equal opportunities for students to learn the curriculum mandated by …

An Army Of One... With Dependents: A History Of The Army Family, Stacey Lynne Brown
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)
Family members have accompanied the army for the entire 227-year history of the organization. This thesis outlines the formation of the army family and its continuation through times of peace and war. It establishes the army family as a community based on the existence of three elements: geographic location, social interaction, and common ties. The results of the research for this paper establish a common experience among the members of the army family that exists throughout history and is a vital part of the success and continuation of the community.

An Assessment Of Vocal Conservation/Hygiene And Vocal Exercise Treatment Programs For Middle School Teachers With Voice Problems, Jennifer H. Vinson
An Assessment Of Vocal Conservation/Hygiene And Vocal Exercise Treatment Programs For Middle School Teachers With Voice Problems, Jennifer H. Vinson
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Nationally, over 38% of teachers are diagnosed with vocal disorders due to heavy demands placed on their vocal mechanisms with resulting abnormal laryngeal biomechanics and repeated exposure to upper respiratory infections and other airborne irritants (Smith, Kirchner, Taylor, Hoffman, & Lemke, 1998). The incidence of vocal disorders among teachers in the north Alabama area appears to be higher than the national average of 38% according to local otorhinolaryngologists interviewed and preliminary data collected from middle school teachers in the Madison County School System in Huntsville, Alabama. Preliminary data indicated a 44% voice-disordered teacher population within the targeted middle school teaching …

The Principal's Role In Promoting Success For Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Students: A Participatory Research Study, Maria Norma Martinez
Doctoral Dissertations
We need to understand more fully what facilitates success in schools with diverse populations. Through participatory research, the voices of school principals who are responsive to the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students were recorded and analyzed to provide insights on the practices that promote the school success of culturally and linguistically diverse students. Using a dialogic retrospective, the participants had the opportunity to engage, individually and collectively, in reflection and dialogue to identify common themes that emerged in their important work as school leaders and as advocates for diverse students.
Intercultural Communication Between Caucasian Unitedstatesians And Salvadorians: Implications For Team Dynamics, Gabriela Couch Melano
Intercultural Communication Between Caucasian Unitedstatesians And Salvadorians: Implications For Team Dynamics, Gabriela Couch Melano
Doctoral Dissertations
With the advent of an increasingly interdependent world, organizations and businesses around the globe either purposefully seek or have no other option than to integrate work teams with members from ethnically and culturally diverse backgrounds. This is true in government, the corporate world, education, and the social service fields and community development endeavors, among others. However, multicultural teams most frequently experience frustrations and, at times, significant impasses in their performance. This phenomenon is directly related to differences in values and beliefs towards work, as well as to habits and expectations regarding teamwork (Bennett and Stewart, 1991; Cox, 1994; Donnellon, 1996; …

Development Of An Aggregation Methodology For Risk Analysis In Aerospace Conceptual Vehicle Design, Trina Marsh Chytka
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The growing complexity of technical systems has emphasized a need to gather as much information as possible regarding specific systems of interest in order to make robust, sound decisions about their design and deployment. Acquiring as much data as possible requires the use of empirical statistics, historical information and expert opinion. In much of the aerospace conceptual design environment, the lack of historical information and infeasibility of gathering empirical data relegates the data collection to expert opinion.
The conceptual design of a space vehicle requires input from several disciplines (weights and sizing, operations, trajectory, etc.). In this multidisciplinary environment, the …
Proactive Personality And The Big Five As Predictors Of Motivation To Learn, Jonathan E. Turner
Proactive Personality And The Big Five As Predictors Of Motivation To Learn, Jonathan E. Turner
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
In an environment of changing psychological contracts, corporate downsizing, and increases in alternative self-paced training delivery channels, motivation to learn is believed to represent a key variable in employee self-development that distinguishes employees who will thrive from those who will not. Predicting this variable, then, becomes an important step in managing workforce development and helping employees help themselves. Therefore, the efficacy of relevant personality characteristics as predictors of motivation to learn was investigated. Proactive personality and the Big Five factors of personality were hypothesized to be predictive of motivation to learn. These personality variables are relevant because they have been …

The Design Of A Professional Development Program To Train Reading Teachers To Coach Content Area Teachers, Cara Richardson
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This applied dissertation was designed to investigate and provide middle school content-area teachers with ongoing support in an effort to foster reading across the curriculum. Mathematics, science, social studies, and language arts teachers participated in a mandatory content area literacy training where they were provided with research-based reading strategies to implement into their classrooms. The requirement to implement these new strategies into their daily instruction seemed overwhelming, which led to reluctance and frustration among many of the teachers.
The development methodology was used to develop the product utilizing a formative and a summative committee. The formative committee gathered data that …

Improving Character Education In Preschool Programs Through Improved Program Policies, And Through The Training Of Teachers And University Student Teachers, Cheryl N. Priest
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This applied dissertation was designed to provide training, coursework, resources, children’s materials, and program policies that would improve the development of character within preschool children enrolled in a university laboratory preschool setting. Many of the young children enrolled in this school were not exhibiting the skills often associated with character development. A number of these children were not working with others to solve social problems, did not verbalize feelings or expressed feelings in unacceptable ways, and did not identify classmates as friends. Classroom teachers also found that some children were unwilling to help others and that they were doing nothing …

Increasing Students’ Performance In English Within A Two-Way Bilingual Immersion Program, Jacquelyne Hoy
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
During the 2000-2001 school year, 30.76% of the 1st- through 3rd-grade students performed below grade level in the English reading comprehension test. Consequently, 35% of the students withdrew from Lycée Franco-American during the 2000-2001 school year because their parents feared that their children would not perform at or above grade level in English.
This writer conducted an initial analysis of the study in May of 2001, which revealed the following causes for the low performance in English reading comprehension: (a) teachers’ lack of training and experience in 2-way bilingual immersion programs, (b) the English program was too cumbersome and did …
