A Case Study Analysis Of Five African American Male Educational Leaders, Donna Richardson
A Case Study Analysis Of Five African American Male Educational Leaders, Donna Richardson
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study was conducted to elucidate the current understandings about what is known about the African American pathway from seemingly oppressive beginnings to educational leadership positions. It was an investigation of five African American male leaders from Jacksonville, Florida, and their individual and collective perceptions on what enabled them to educationally succeed despite their humble beginnings. The study explored the similarities, differences, and historical experiences of all five of the African American male leaders purposefully chosen for this research. Two categories or types of themes were identified in this study, common background themes and common outcome themes. Six themes …
Hard Choices And Soft Law: Ethical Codes, Policy Guidelines And The Role Of The Courts In Regulating Government, Lorne Sossin, Charles Smith
Hard Choices And Soft Law: Ethical Codes, Policy Guidelines And The Role Of The Courts In Regulating Government, Lorne Sossin, Charles Smith
Articles & Book Chapters
The authors examine a number of examples of "soft law": written and unwritten instruments and influences which shape administrative decision making Rather than rendering bureaucratic processes more transparent and cohesive, or fostering greater accountability and consistency among decision-makers, "soft law" in this context frequently reinforces artificial divisions. Moreover, it insulates decisions and decision-makers from the kinds of critical inquiry typically associated with "hard law. " If it is to realize its potential as a bridge between law and policy, and lend meaning to core principles - like fairness and reliability - soft law ought to be subjected to similarly critical …

Self-Perceptions Of Non-Native English Speaking Teachers Of English As A Second Language, Kathryn Ann Long
Self-Perceptions Of Non-Native English Speaking Teachers Of English As A Second Language, Kathryn Ann Long
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of the present study was to examine the self-perceptions of effective non-native English speaking teachers (non-NESTs) of English as a Second Language (ESL) regarding their teaching behaviors. The study also sought to discover the relationship between effective non-NEST perceptions of their teaching behaviors and stereotypes for those behaviors. It further sought to define what experiences have contributed to their non-conformation if their perceptions do not fit the negative stereotypes of teaching behaviors of non-NESTs.

Is The Wada Test Necessary Prior To Epilepsy Surgery?, Bassel W. Abou-Khalil
Is The Wada Test Necessary Prior To Epilepsy Surgery?, Bassel W. Abou-Khalil
Neurosciences
The Wada test was initially used to identify the hemisphere of language dominance prior to epilepsy surgery, but was subsequently applied to identify patients at risk of amnesia after temporal resection. The Wada test was later found useful in lateralizing the epileptogenic zone, predicting postoperative memory function, and predicting postoperative seizure control. The Wada test became more widely used, and in many centers became a standard component of the presurgical evaluation of epilepsy. Yet, several problems and disadvantages have surrounded the Wada test, including absence of standardized technique, overestimation of postoperative deficits, and risks and discomforts related to the invasive …
The Effect Of Video Instruction On Social Interactions Of Children In The Inclusive Preschool, Catherine Doyle Lyons
The Effect Of Video Instruction On Social Interactions Of Children In The Inclusive Preschool, Catherine Doyle Lyons
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Social competence is an important consideration for early childhood education. Furthermore, young children with disabilities are increasingly being placed in community preschool programs therefore necessitating strategies to increase the number and quality of social interactions between young children with and without disabilities. Beginning at a very young age nearly all children have access to television, VCR or DVD, and cable or satellite. Therefore, media may serve as a vehicle to increase the number and quality of social interactions between young children with and without disabilities; This study had two purposes. The first was to investigate the effect of scripted video …

Semiotics, Hermeneutics And Cash: An Essay On The True And Fair View, Lawrence A. Cunningham
Semiotics, Hermeneutics And Cash: An Essay On The True And Fair View, Lawrence A. Cunningham
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
Cash is king. As countries struggle to develop accounting standards that translate across borders, the cash flow statement is a promising place to look. This essay reviews global accounting practices in several countries, showing how angst expressed in concepts such as semiotics and hermeneutics are both fascinating and unnecessary. In doing so, it considers continuing weaknesses in the US regulatory model, including in the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, and shows ways that markets have been ahead of regulators in developing convergence in financial reporting.

Treatment Of Adynamia In Aphasia, Anastasia M. Raymer
Treatment Of Adynamia In Aphasia, Anastasia M. Raymer
Communication Disorders & Special Education Faculty Publications
Transcortical motor aphasia (TCMA) is an acquired impairment of language expression that occurs following neurologic damage that affects left frontal cortex and spares perisylvian regions. In some individuals with TCMA, verbal expression is rendered nonfluent due to difficulty spontaneously initiating and elaborating upon verbal messages. Nonfluency arises from impaired activation of intended messages and inhibition of competing verbal expressions. This impairment of the intentional aspects of language expression can be termed 'adynamia.' Because adynamic forms of TCMA occur infrequently, few systematic treatment investigations have been reported for this condition. Behavioral treatments have been proposed to engage intact frontal regions to …

"How Many Lesbians Does It Take To Screw In A Light Bulb?", Janet M. Bing, Dana Heller
English Faculty Publications
This paper explores how humor reveals shared aspects of a culture of lesbian communities in the US. For lesbians, jokes and other forms of humor are an active, narrative means of self-construction and community imagining that help lesbians negotiate their positions both inside and outside mainstream culture. Whether consciously or unconsciously, much of lesbian humor challenges the dominant culture by rejecting its definitions of and presuppositions about lesbians, and by making lesbian experience central to its understanding of normalcy. Whereas the term "lesbian joke" usually activates a sex frame for the dominant culture, much humor created by and for lesbians …
Holy Fools, Secular Saints, And Illiterate Saviors In American Literature And Popular Culture, Dana Heller
Holy Fools, Secular Saints, And Illiterate Saviors In American Literature And Popular Culture, Dana Heller
English Faculty Publications
In her article, "Holy Fools, Secular Saints, and Illiterate Saviors in American Literature and Popular Culture," Dana Heller identifies and analyzes characteristics of the holy fool figure in American literature and culture. Heller defines the holy fool, or divine idiot, as a figure central to U.S. myths of nation. One encounters such figures in American literature as well as in American folklore, popular culture, and mass media. In American culture, the Divine Idiot is a hybrid form which grows out of the crossings of numerous literary and historical currents, both secular and non-secular. This unwieldy hybridity -- the fact that …

A Renewal Of The Sacred Heart University Library: A New Role For The Sacred Heart University Library, Dennis C. Benamati
Librarian Publications
It is a pleasure to present this prospectus for renewal of University’s Library to the students, faculty, administration, alumni and friends of Sacred Heart University. This first part of a two-part plan is intended to provide a statement of how we will proceed toward transforming the Library into a center of learning. But this is only the starting point for a larger and more exciting plan. Part II will outline a new role for the Library—one befitting a 21st century university—that we believe will distinguish Sacred Heart University among its peers. One that, we hope, will contribute to the University’s …

Escape From New York: Analyzing The State's Relative Interests In Proscribing The Withdrawal Of Life Support And Physician-Assisted Suicide, Colin Miller
Faculty Publications
This Note argues that states cannot consistently prohibit physician assisted suicide for terminally ill patients while they continue to allow the withdrawal of life support for even non-terminal patients. All of the state interests identified by the Supreme Court in rejecting a right to assisted suicide are implicated to a higher degree by withdrawal of life support. The primary reason for this difference is that withdrawal of life support often involves incompetent patients and surrogate decision making while assisted suicide by definition requires a competent patient choosing to hasten her death.
Copula Variability In Gullah, Tracey L. Weldon
Copula Variability In Gullah, Tracey L. Weldon
Faculty Publications
Many researchers have investigated the copula for possible links between African American Vernacular English (aave) and Atlantic Creoles, a connection that has served as the foundation of the Creolist Hypothesis in the on-going debate over the origins of aave. One variety that has been of particular interest in this debate is Gullah, which has been hypothetically linked to aave since some of the earliest statements of the Creolist Hypothesis. To date, however, very little research has been done on copula variability in Gullah itself. This study, therefore, provides an analysis of copula variability in present affirmative contexts in Gullah. Variation …

You Still My Girl?: Adolescent Femininity As Resistance In Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Sophie Levy
You Still My Girl?: Adolescent Femininity As Resistance In Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Sophie Levy
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
History is where the dead things are. Buffy, as her Watcher Rupert Giles tells her mother Joyce, resists the historical. She lives very much in the now, and history of course, is very much about the then he stammers, aware perhaps of the history echoing in his British accent (Angel I:7). The show's appeal, however, resides in its battle with history, not its denial. History is the repressed but resurrected, whether personal -- Giles' dark age of demon-worship comes back to (almost) kill him (The Dark Age II:8) -- or cultural, such as the Master's bad Old World …
