Surviving Against The Odds: Families’ Journeys Off Welfare And Out Of Homelessness, Donna H. Friedman, Tatjana Meschede, Michelle Hayes Jan 2003

Surviving Against The Odds: Families’ Journeys Off Welfare And Out Of Homelessness, Donna H. Friedman, Tatjana Meschede, Michelle Hayes

Center for Social Policy Publications

Homeless families face complex challenges when making the transition from welfare to the workforce. By focusing on the experiences of homeless families participating in a Boston-based welfare-to-work program, the multimethod, longitudinal study described in this article explored factors contributing to more successful transitions as well as barriers faced by families having a harder time making the transition.

Nearly 90 percent of the families that were studied left a shelter with a housing subsidy and retained it 6 to 12 months later. Successful employment outcomes after exiting a shelter were more evident for families whose head of household was older, two-parent …

Follow-Up Of College Students With A History Of Developmental Speech Disorders, Christine Buchheit Jan 2003

Follow-Up Of College Students With A History Of Developmental Speech Disorders, Christine Buchheit

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined 16 college students with a childhood history of an articulation disorder involving isolated "residual" phoneme errors (RE) and 16 control subjects. Subjects were administered an experimental battery designed to tax the phonological system. Measures included conventional and pseudo-word spelling, syllabification, nonsense word repetition, and expository writing. Subjects also responded to questions assessing student adjustment and academic performance. Results revealed that the RE subjects performed comparably to controls on all of the experimental and academic/adjustment measures (p < .05). Two subjects in the RE group were still producing noticeable articulation distortions as adults. One of these subjects had highly favorable outcomes, whereas the other subject performed relatively poorly on several of the experimental and student adjustment measures. These findings suggest that some individuals who make persistent articulation distortion errors as adults may display subtle phonological and or social deficits that should be explored in future research.

Feeding Identity: The Critical Hermeneutics Of Contemporary Kleinian Psychoanalytically Oriented Psychotherapy From The Perspective Of A Novice, David M. Greco-Brooks Jan 2003

Feeding Identity: The Critical Hermeneutics Of Contemporary Kleinian Psychoanalytically Oriented Psychotherapy From The Perspective Of A Novice, David M. Greco-Brooks

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Clinical supervision is required for every graduate student pursuing a clinical track in psychology. Yet empirical research has focused almost exclusively on identifying efficacious supervision techniques in terms of altering "trainee characteristics" rather than investigating in depth the effects of supervision as changes in the characteristics of the trainee's communicative behavior. Moreover, the question of how the specialized communicative behavior practiced by the trainee works to facilitate change for the client/patient has not been addressed by quantitative empirical studies of supervision or psychotherapy process. This study addresses these problems by asking: (1) What characterizes the author's specialized communicative competence after …

Interart Studies From The Middle Ages To The Early Modern Era: Stylistic Parallels Between English Poetry And The Visual Arts, Roberta Aronson Jan 2003

Interart Studies From The Middle Ages To The Early Modern Era: Stylistic Parallels Between English Poetry And The Visual Arts, Roberta Aronson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation develops and applies interart studies, an interdisciplinary approach to the analysis of literature. The four chapters are unified by an interart analytic methodology intended either to bring a new insight to an unresolved topic in literary interpretation or to offer a new interpretation of a major poem in English literature. The approach is best characterized as "synchronic," a term that Murray Roston uses to designate the interrelation of the visual and literary arts of the same era. The synchronic approach demands that parallels drawn between the visual arts and a literary work be stylistically and thematically clear and …

03. Getting Our Thoughts Together: Instructional Manual To Accompany 'Elfie', Second Edition, Matthew Lipman

Early Elementary School Curriculum

The cognitive skills emphasized in Elfie – distinction-making and connection-making – are those on which all-subsequent reasoning rests. They are accompanied by the criteria that are appropriate to them: sameness and difference. Other operations like the making of comparisons, the discovery of uniformities, the identification of classes, the formation of concepts, and the formulation of definition, all depend upon the logical infrastructure of these two sets of skills and criteria. Elfie should therefore be seen as the base of the Philosophy for Children program.

Mellon Information Literacy Initiative Grant Report (2000-2003), Gould Library Reference And Instruction Department

Staff and Faculty Work

In 2000 Carleton received a three-year Mellon grant. We wanted to integrate information literacy into the curriculum, focusing on the discipline major. Our call for participants resulted in five departments agreeing to participate. The departments are Classical Languages (including Hebrew), Economics, English, Geology, and History. The initiative offered the library and the departments a wonderful opportunity to focus on information literacy within these disciplines.

The Rhetoric Of Ritual Instruction In Leviticus 1-7, James W. Watts Jan 2003

The Rhetoric Of Ritual Instruction In Leviticus 1-7, James W. Watts

Religion - All Scholarship

Formal and structural features of Leviticus 1-7 distinguish these chapters as some of the most systematic texts in the Hebrew Bible. In a collection of literature otherwise noted for its sweeping narratives and urgent sermons, these methodical instructions for the performance of five kinds of offerings, presented twice in different arrangements, have suggested to many interpreters that they preserve examples of an ancient genre of ritual instruction. However, the identification of a ritual genre in these chapters (and elsewhere in the Pentateuch) has failed to account for all the features of this material. The present form of Leviticus 1-7 can …

The Harmonization Game: What Basketball Can Teach About Intellectual Property And International Trade, Peter K. Yu Jan 2003

The Harmonization Game: What Basketball Can Teach About Intellectual Property And International Trade, Peter K. Yu

Faculty Scholarship

In the recent World Men's Basketball Championships in Indianapolis, Team USA found out painfully that the international game is very different from what they play at home and that the gap between USA Basketball and the rest of the world has been closing. While their losses might have a significant impact on how the United States prepares for the 2004 Olympics in Athens and on how Americans train youngsters to play basketball, their teachings go beyond basketball.

The international harmonization process is a game with different rules, different officials, and players with different visions and mindsets. By watching how players …

Modeling Nonintersective Adjectives Using Operator Logics, Paul Bankston Jan 2003

Modeling Nonintersective Adjectives Using Operator Logics, Paul Bankston

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Our topic is one that involves the interface between natural language and mathematical logic. First-order predicate language/logic does a good job approximating many parts of (English) speech, i.e., nouns, verbs and prepositions, but fails decidedly when it comes to, say, adjectives. In particular, it cannot account for the quite different ways in which the adjectives green and big modify a noun such as chair. In the former case, we can easily view a world in which the class of green chairs is the intersection of the class of green things with the class of chair-things. By contrast, the way …

Frankenstein, Feminism, And Literary Theory, Diane Hoeveler Jan 2003

Frankenstein, Feminism, And Literary Theory, Diane Hoeveler

English Faculty Research and Publications

Cave ab homine unius libri, as the Latin epigram warns us: "beware the author of one book." Frankenstein has so overshadowed Mary Shelley's other books in the popular imagination that many readers believe - erroneously - that she is a one-book author. While this is decidedly not the case, Frankenstein has figured more importantly in the development of feminist literary theory than perhaps any other novel, with the possible exception of Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre. This essay will discuss the major feminist literary interpretations of the novel, beginning with Ellen Moers's landmark reading in Literary Women and then …

Advocacy And Compassion In The Jewish Tradition, Daniel B. Sinclair Jan 2003

Advocacy And Compassion In The Jewish Tradition, Daniel B. Sinclair

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This essay surveys the Talmudic sources dealing with the issue of advocacy in Jewish law, and highlights the element of compassion that underlies the permissive approach to advocacy in the Talmudic sources. It outlines post-Talmudic developments with a special emphasis on the way in which the medieval authorities synthesized the views of the two Talmuds on the question of advocacy, and how later halakhists pushed this synthesis to its limits in order to pave the way for the emergence of the rabbinical pleader of modern times. This essay concludes with a brief remark on the link between compassion and advocacy …

Expanding Latino Participation In The Legal Profession: Strategies For Increasing Latino Law School Enrollments, William Malpica, Mauricio A. España Jan 2003

Expanding Latino Participation In The Legal Profession: Strategies For Increasing Latino Law School Enrollments, William Malpica, Mauricio A. España

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This Essay explores how Latinos have faired in the law school admissions process -- a hurdle that the group has yet to overcome -- and evaluates current efforts to bolster Latino enrollment. It examines the underlying conditions that contribute to low Latino enrollment in law schools by revealing the primary obstacles to Latino admission: the limited pool of eligible Latino college graduates and current law school admissions policies that emphasize Law School Admission Test scores and grade point averages. This Essay review a sampling of responses to low Latino law school enrollment and concludes that the most effective strategies for …

Where Is Sherlock Holmes?, Jeffrey C. Goodman Jan 2003

Where Is Sherlock Holmes?, Jeffrey C. Goodman

Faculty Scholarship

Most philosophers would say that fictional characters lack spatiotemporal location simply because such entities do not exist.  However, even prominent believers in ficta hold that they must lack location.  I here focus on the views of one such believer, Amie Thomasson, and her Artifactual Theory.  The fundamentals of her ontology seem correct, but I argue that the view implies that ficta do have location.  I provide a diagnosis of an argument Thomasson gives for the contrary, and then suggest a way for the Artifactual Theory to account for the locations of ficta.  I conclude by discussing some potential applications of …

Scripture Note: Doctrine And Covenants 125, Fred E. Woods

Faculty Publications

On 19 January 1841, the Lord gave a revelation to Joseph Smith regarding the building of the Nauvoo Temple and issued a call for the faithful Saints to gather to assist in the building of this sacred edifice (see D&C 124: 25-55). With the emphasis on the gathering to Nauvoo and the building of the temple, the Iowa Saints on the eastern banks of the Mississippi were wondering if they should move across the river to Nauvoo. Therefore, in March 1841, the Prophet Joseph Smith posed the question, "What is the will of the Lord concerning the saints in the …

Semantic Role Parsing: Adding Semantic Structure To Unstructured Text, Sameer Pradhan, K. Hacioglu, W. Ward, James H. Martin, D. Jurafsky

Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

There is an ever-growing need to add structure in the form of semantic markup to the huge amounts of unstructured text data now available. We present the technique of shallow semantic parsing, the process of assigning a simple WHO did WHAT to WHOM, etc., structure to sentences in text, as a useful tool in achieving this goal. We formulate the semantic parsing problem as a classification problem using support vector machines. Using a hand-labeled training set and a set of features drawn from earlier work together with some feature enhancements, we demonstrate a system that performs better than all other …

Doing Loshootseed Morphology By Analogy, Deryle W. Lonsdale

Faculty Publications

Analogical modeling (AM) is an exemplar-based general modeling theory that is being applied to an increasing range ofnatural language processing problems. This paper introduces AM as a viable approach to morphological analysis for Lushootseed, and shows results from applying the system to analyze the contents of the transcription of a well-known Lushootseed story. Subsequent discussion mentions the strengths and current weaknesses of the approach. Possible improvements and future applications are also sketched.

Foreign Language Teacher Education And Technology: Bridging The Gap, Aleidine Kramer Moeller, Hyesung Park

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Modeling a computer supported learning environment in teacher education can result in teachers who are "far more confident, skilled, and motivated to use computers with their own students" (Johnson, 2002). According to Johnson (2002) evidence is beginning to confirm that such modeling" is most effective in preparing teachers to integrate technology into their classroom" (p.74). A review of the literature on instructional technology (IT) and teacher education concluded (Willis & Mehlinger, 1996) :

Most pre-service teachers know very little about effective use of technology in education and leaders believe there is a pressing need to increase substantially the amount and …

Effects Of Concurrent Motor, Linguistic, Or Cognitive Tasks On Speech Motor Performance, Christopher Dromey, April Benson Jan 2003

Effects Of Concurrent Motor, Linguistic, Or Cognitive Tasks On Speech Motor Performance, Christopher Dromey, April Benson

Faculty Publications

This study examined the influence of 3 different types of concurrent tasks on speech motor performance. The goal was to uncover potential differences in speech movements relating to the nature of the secondary task. Twenty young adults repeated sentences either with or without simultaneous distractor activities. These distractions included a motor task (putting together washers, nuts, and bolts), a linguistic task (generating verbs from nouns), and a cognitive task(performing mental arithmetic). Lip movement data collected during the experimental conditions revealed decreases in displacement and velocity during the motor task. The linguistic and cognitive tasks were associated with increased spatiotemporal variability …

The Disfavored Constitution: State Fiscal Limits And State Constitutional Law, Richard Briffault Jan 2003

The Disfavored Constitution: State Fiscal Limits And State Constitutional Law, Richard Briffault

Faculty Scholarship

The dominant theme in the resurgent state constitutional jurisprudence of the last quarter-century has been the effort of many scholars and jurists to find in state constitutions a progressive alternative to the conservative turn federal constitutional doctrine has taken in the Burger and Rehnquist eras. Following the tone set by Justice William Brennan's path-breaking 1977 article in the Harvard Law Review, the state constitutional law literature has sought a more expansive protection of civil liberties through state constitutional provisions dealing with criminal law and procedure, freedom of expression, and equality, and to ground positive rights to public services in state …

Dbunifier: A Framework For Automated Unification Of Textual Data In Multiple Remote Data Sources, John S. Dembowski Jan 2003

Dbunifier: A Framework For Automated Unification Of Textual Data In Multiple Remote Data Sources, John S. Dembowski

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Over time, advances in database technology and utilization have resulted in a rapid increase in the number and types of data sources. Simultaneously, numerous methods of unifying these various data sources have emerged. Research has shown that a more comprehensive set of data attribute matches between multiple schemas can be detected by combining a number of the unification methodologies as opposed to using a single method. In this research project, a unification framework, dbUNiFier, has been proposed as an approach to allow for easy integration of both existing and future unification methods and data sources.
