A Particle Of Indefiniteness In American Sign Language, Frances Conlin, Paul Hagstrom, Carol Neidle Jan 2003

A Particle Of Indefiniteness In American Sign Language, Frances Conlin, Paul Hagstrom, Carol Neidle

Linguistic Discovery

We describe here the characteristics of a very frequently-occurring ASL indefinite focus particle, which has not previously been recognized as such. We show that, despite its similarity to the question sign “WHAT”, the particle is distinct from that sign in terms of articulation, function, and distribution. The particle serves to express “uncertainty” in various ways, which can be formalized semantically in terms of a domain-widening effect of the same sort as that proposed for English ‘any’ by Kadmon & Landman (1993). Its function is to widen the domain of possibilities under consideration from the typical to include the non-typical as …

Iambic Feet In Paumari And The Theory Of Foot Structure, Daniel L. Everett Jan 2003

Iambic Feet In Paumari And The Theory Of Foot Structure, Daniel L. Everett

Linguistic Discovery

This paper analyzes stress and moraic constituencies in Paumari, an endangered language of the Arawan family of the Brazilian Amazon. It argues that Paumari feet are quantity-insensitive iambs, built from right-to-left within the prosodic word. Both of these latter claims are theoretically important because they violate some proposed universals of foot structure. The paper also discusses more general implications of the Paumari data for theories of foot size and shape, proposing two constraints on foot size, Foot Maximality and Foot Minimality, to replace the less fine-tuned constraint Foot Binarity.

Teaching The Bible Along The Devotional/Academic Faultline: An Incarnational Approach To The Quarrel Between Love And Knowledge, Roger Newell Jan 2003

Teaching The Bible Along The Devotional/Academic Faultline: An Incarnational Approach To The Quarrel Between Love And Knowledge, Roger Newell

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

There seem to be two irreconcilable approaches to reading the Bible, and these often collide in an undergraduate’s first college class in religion. Students from a devotional background find the scholarly approach a disappointment compared with their preferred way of reading. Yet upon closer examination the limits of an exclusively devotional way or an exclusively academic way soon become apparent. A way beyond this impasse is described as an incarnational approach, which seeks to honor the integrity of the literary, cultural, and historical features of the Bible while also taking seriously the personal faith of both student and instructor. This …

Pair-Bonding And The Evolutionary Trajectory Of Homo: Disease Avoidance As An Adaptive Trait, Ronald S. Immerman, Wade C. Mackey Jan 2003

Pair-Bonding And The Evolutionary Trajectory Of Homo: Disease Avoidance As An Adaptive Trait, Ronald S. Immerman, Wade C. Mackey

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

As the ancestors of both the great apes and humans began to separate into two lineages, several distinctions emerged and solidified for the separate genera. It is suggested here that the sequelae to sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and subsequent behavioral tendencies to avoid sexually transmitted diseases played an important role in forging the unique character of the Australopithecine/Homo line. In particular, the advantage of pair-bonding versus promiscuity in avoiding STDs would facilitate the crystallization of both the nascent nuclear family and the man-to-child affiliative bond. In addition, the unexpectedly small sexual dimorphism of Homo is suggested to be a …

Cybertrespass, Richard A. Epstein Jan 2003

Cybertrespass, Richard A. Epstein

Faculty Articles

With cyberspace, the hard question is whether technological changes could ever lead us to abandon the presumption that a deliberate trespass counts as a private wrong. The evolution of legal doctrine provides us with excellent examples of just how that shift takes place. One of the central rules of the common (and Roman) law is embedded in the maxim cujus est solum, ejus est usque ad coelum et ad inferos-"Whosoever owns the land, owns to the sky and to the bottom of the earth." One look to the heavens shows that, literally taken, the maxim is absurd, given the rotation …

Protestant Language Use In 17th Century Slovakia In A Diglossia Framework, Mark Richard Lauersdorf

Linguistics Faculty Publications

This article presents a discussion of several issues that are central to the ongoing, larger sociolinguistic investigation of the history of standard language development in pre-codification (15th-18th century) Slovakia. It is, in a sense, a position paper, laying out a basic theoretical framework and methodology for historical sociolinguistic research on Slovak standard language development and outlining an investigation of the 17th century linguistic situation among the Slovak Protestants within this framework and methodology.

The Role Of Oxidative Stress In Alzheimer's Disease, Robin Petroze Jan 2003

The Role Of Oxidative Stress In Alzheimer's Disease, Robin Petroze

Kaleidoscope

Over four million individuals in the United States currently suffer from Alzheimer's disease (AD), a devastating disorder of progressive dementia. Within the next several decades, AD is expected to affect over 22 million people globally. AD can only be definitively diagnosed by postmortem examination. Thus, investigation into the specific pathogenesis of neuronal degeneration and death in AD on a biochemical level is essential for both earlier diagnosis and potential treatment and prevention options. Overproduction of amyloid [3-peptide (A[3) in the brain leads to both free radical oxidative stress and toxicity to neurons in AD. My undergraduate biochemical studies with regard …

Social And Psychological Factors In Thai Students' Code Switching, Sumittra Suraratdecha Jan 2003

Social And Psychological Factors In Thai Students' Code Switching, Sumittra Suraratdecha

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This paper examines Thai-English code-switching by eight Thai students at the University of Hawaii at Manoa by taking into account Bell's audience design factors (Bell 1984), speech accommodation theory (Giles & Smith 1979; Giles & Coupland 1991), and other psychosocial factors. Code-switching is defined here as an alternation between one language and another made by a speaker within a sentence, sentences, or a conversation. This paper proposes that code-switching is essentially an accommodative phenomenon; that is, speakers will switch into one language if they think it is appropriate to the topic or to their notions of self and addressee. Conversely, …

The Mixing Of English And Thai In Thai Television Program, Prathana Kannaovakun, Albert C. Gunther Jan 2003

The Mixing Of English And Thai In Thai Television Program, Prathana Kannaovakun, Albert C. Gunther

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This study set out to systemically observe and describe the mixing of English with Thai-based discourse, often termed code-mixing, in Thai television programs. Data came from 100 hours of programming randomly samples from five genres of Thai television programs - Thai drama, talk or variety shows, academic or hard talk shows, game shows and sports programs. Finding showed that code-mixing is common, with sports programs producing the most. A great number of code-mixing were single nouns. English mixes occurred even when Thai equivalents existed. A few were used for emphasis or clarification, but most were not. Celebrities produced the most …
