Letters To America: Dialectical Epistolarity In Post 9/11 Advertising, Gary W. Larson, Lawrence J. Mullen Jan 2003

Letters To America: Dialectical Epistolarity In Post 9/11 Advertising, Gary W. Larson, Lawrence J. Mullen

Iowa Journal of Communication

In the weeks after 9/11, businesses sought to reconnect with their clients and colleagues through ads in the New York Times, a number of which were framed as letters. Drawing on the literatures of epistolary critique, visual meaning, and rhetorical criticism, we explore the strategy of framing ads as letters. We use Peirce's typology to classify the ads into iconic, indexical or symbolic frames. Our initial assumption that more graphically iconic ads would rely less on textual metaphor and vice versa, is confirmed. Finally, we encourage the consideration of epistolary rhetoric as a critical tool of analysis.

The Takings Clause And The Separation Of Powers: An Essay, John A. Humbach Jan 2003

The Takings Clause And The Separation Of Powers: An Essay, John A. Humbach

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

The most fundamental environmental problem is this: across our nation there are literally hundreds of millions of acres of important natural resource lands-- farms, forests, wetlands, reservoir watersheds, shore lands, endangered species habitat--lands that have relatively little commercial value in their present natural condition, but which would have much greater commercial value if their natural values were degraded or destroyed. Stated differently, private property often will yield a much greater profit to its owner if it is used in ways that will harm or obliterate important environmental assets and values. For this reason, private owners are understandably tempted to supplant …

Introducing Performance Into The Communication Curriculum For Engineers: Breaking The Mould, Constance Matilda Israel Jan 2003

Introducing Performance Into The Communication Curriculum For Engineers: Breaking The Mould, Constance Matilda Israel

Doctoral Dissertations

Education in South Africa has, thankfully, not escaped the winds of change. The introduction of Outcomes-based Education (OBE) has generated much debate. How have technikons responded to the educational transformation impelled by sociopolitical change? I refer here specifically to the Communication curricula for engineers at Mangosuthu Technikon.

This research explores the effects in my Communication classroom of introducing performance, through games and a dramatic text. My intention is to subvert the potential dangers of OBE, given its behaviourist and prescriptive thrust, and a possible reversion to the transmission model in its application at Mantec. I argue that gaps in the …

Reading The Personal: Toward A Theory And Practice Of Self -Narrative In Student Writing, Megan Fulwiler Jan 2003

Reading The Personal: Toward A Theory And Practice Of Self -Narrative In Student Writing, Megan Fulwiler

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines students' personal essays as rhetorical projects of self-representation. The debate over the role of personal writing in composition studies has created a binary opposition between a modernist transcendent notion of self and a postmodern discursive subject. As a result, the complex issues of self and representation in student work is often dismissed in favor of what is traditionally called "academic discourse." The concept of "narrative identity" provides a way to identify the strategies that student writers use to establish ethos, assert agency, and negotiate codes of belonging within multiple social communities. Chapter 1, "Situating Personal Writing," considers …

"Mai Pen Rai" On Communicative Phenomena In Thai Culture, Nittaya Chaimanee Jan 2003

"Mai Pen Rai" On Communicative Phenomena In Thai Culture, Nittaya Chaimanee

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This paper discusses patterns of use and various functions of the frequent Thai expression mai pen rai, which can be roughly glossed as 'never mind'. The study is based on conversational data: face-to-face and by phone. Mai pen rai is a linguistic pattern requiring appropriate knowledge for its practical use in the culture of everyday human communication. The expression mai pen rai implies a pragmatic response to culture, and acts as a psychological mechanism reflecting the influence of Buddhism (Buddhadasa Bhikkhu, 1956; Phra Khantipalo, 1993; Phra Rajakittimoli, 1997) in a relaxed Thai lifestyle. Mai pen rai demonstrates a unique communication …

Comic George Eliot, George Scott Christian Jan 2003

Comic George Eliot, George Scott Christian

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

George Eliot's famous digression on the nature of literary realism in chapter 17 of Adam Bede has long been understood as a kind of aesthetic manifesto for the Victorian novel. Much has been written on Eliot's insistence that a faithful narrative representation of reality must take account of low and middle life, much as Dutch genre painting seeks to imitate quotidian life in all its prosaic detail. What has attracted virtually no attention in discussions of Eliot's ideas on realism, however, is the central importance of comic theory to her realist aesthetic.' Indeed, Eliot's comic theory deeply informs and shapes …

(Un)Examined Assumptions And (Un)Intended Messages: Teaching Students To Recognize Bias In Legal Analysis And Language , Lorraine Bannai, Anne Enquist

Seattle University Law Review

This article discusses how law school, specifically through legal writing courses, can address cultural bias and its effect on legal analysis and language. Part I addresses why the law school curriculum should aid students in recognizing expressions of bias in legal analysis and language. Part II discusses how bias typically appears in legal language, as well as how it may infect legal analysis and argument, and suggests ways of teaching students to recognize it in a legal writing course. Part III addresses challenges that may be faced in teaching the material, including suggestions for handling discussions of potentially sensitive subjects.

Bosnian Refugrees’ Adjustments To Resettlement In Grand Forks, North Dakota, Devon Hansen Jan 2003

Bosnian Refugrees’ Adjustments To Resettlement In Grand Forks, North Dakota, Devon Hansen

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Upheaval causes many people to flee intolerable conditions in their own countries and to seek better lives elsewhere. The United States plays a pivotal role in the resettlement of refugees uprooted by these crises. The refugee resettlement program in North Dakota primarily assists the refugees in making a better life, and it ultimately helps the state's quest for population growth, ethnic diversity, and economic development. This study deals with refugee resettlement in North Dakota communities, specifically Bosnian refugees in Grand Forks. Survey questionnaires and interviews were used to gain an understanding of the issues that the Bosnians face in adjusting …

Soul Sisters: Origins And Accomplishments Of A Unique Partnership, Linda L. Lyman Jan 2003

Soul Sisters: Origins And Accomplishments Of A Unique Partnership, Linda L. Lyman

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Leadership in poverty schools is essential for success. This article chronicles the partnership of a principal and a speech and language pathologist who have, together and with some angst, brought teachers in the school together to link language development with reading success. Since 1994, Aurther Perkins and Pat Lindberg have refined a program that is based on common beliefs that children can be successful in schools, that poor parents care much about their children's victories at school, and that reading is the key to success in every subject. Clearly, this documentation of a successful collaboration between a content expert and …
