Long-Term Employment Agreements With In-House Counsel: Employment Security Or Ethical Quagmire?, Richard E. Moberly, John Hutchins
Long-Term Employment Agreements With In-House Counsel: Employment Security Or Ethical Quagmire?, Richard E. Moberly, John Hutchins
Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications
The relationship between a company and its in-house corporate counsel involves a fragile mixture of the corporate counsel’s fiduciary obligations as the company’s attorney and the company’s legal and contractual responsibilities as the attorney’s employer. Although these roles and expectations often blend smoothly, the relationship can become problematic when the corporate counsel’s position as an attorney conflicts with the counsel’s status as an employee. Put another way, when a company’s expectations as a client are at odds with its responsibilities as an employer, the relationship between the employer-client and the employee-attorney can become strained and expose each to difficulty, if …

United States Public Health Resources
An in vitro assay to evaluate the bacteriolytic activity of the complement pathway was applied to 2 strains of Borrelia bissettii, CO501 and DN127, and compared with that of B. burgdorferi sensu stricto B31. Sera from mule deer ( Odocoileus hemionus) and the Western Fence lizard ( Sceloporus occidentalis) were completely borreliacidal for B. burgdorferi and for both strains of B. bissettii. Serum from Bobwhite quail ( Colinus virginianus) was nonlytic for B. burgdorferi and partially lytic for B. bissettii strains, CO-501 and DN127. Serum from a New Zealand White rabbit ( Oryctolagus cuniculus) …
Determinants Of Satisfaction With An Automated Alcohol Evaluation Program., Daniel Z Lieberman
Determinants Of Satisfaction With An Automated Alcohol Evaluation Program., Daniel Z Lieberman
Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Faculty Publications
High rates of untreated mental illness cause serious health problems in the United States and worldwide. The use of computer-administered therapy has the potential to increase access to mental health care for certain patient populations. An online version of an alcohol check-up was developed that guided subjects through a series of standardized questionnaires, and provided them with feedback designed to enhance their appreciation of the negative aspects of their alcohol use. Ratings of the helpfulness of the questionnaires were evaluated in order to determine the characteristics of individuals who would potentially benefit from an automated substance abuse intervention, and to …

Internal Phosphorus Loading In Spring Lake: Year 1, Dr. Alan Steinman, Dr. Rick Rediske
Internal Phosphorus Loading In Spring Lake: Year 1, Dr. Alan Steinman, Dr. Rick Rediske
Scientific Technical Reports
The rate of phosphorus release from sediments, and the degree to which alum reduces phosphorus release from sediments, was investigated in Spring Lake during the summer of 2003. Triplicate cores were sampled from 4 sites in the lake, and exposed to one of four treatments in the laboratory: 1) oxygen/alum; 2) oxygen/ no alum; 3) nitrogen/alum; or 4) nitrogen/no alum. Both soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and total phosphorus (TP) release rates were virtually undetectable in the alum treatments (both with and without oxygen). Low, but detectable, release rates were measured in the oxygen/no alum treatment. The highest release rates were …
Adolescent And Adult Alcohol Attitudes In A High Alcohol Consumption Community, Laura Dehaan, Kevin M. Thompson
Adolescent And Adult Alcohol Attitudes In A High Alcohol Consumption Community, Laura Dehaan, Kevin M. Thompson
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
The study examines alcohol-related attitudes among adolescents and adults in a high consumption community, exploring whether adolescents and adults hold similar or different views regarding adolescent drinking. Data were gathered from adults in a Midwestern city via random telephone survey of 487 adults (30% with children under the age of 21). Students in grades 6–12 (n = 558) also completed a youth version of the survey in classrooms. Results indicated that becoming a parent was associated with more restrictive attitudes about adolescent alcohol use, regardless of the age of their children. Adolescents aged 14 to 17 had the least …

Comparison Of 3 Methods To Assess Urine Specific Gravity In Collegiate Wrestlers, Kristin J. Stuempfle, Daniel G. Drury
Health Sciences Faculty Publications
Objective: To investigate the reliability and validity of refractometry, hydrometry, and reagent strips in assessing urine specific gravity in collegiate wrestlers.
Design and Setting: We assessed the reliability of refractometry, hydrometry, and reagent strips between 2 trials and among 4 testers. The validity of hydrometry and reagent strips was assessed by comparison with refractometry, the criterion measure for urine specific gravity.
Subjects: Twenty-one National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III collegiate wrestlers provided fresh urine samples.
Measurements: Four testers measured the specific gravity of each urine sample 6 times: twice by refractometry, twice by hydrometry, and twice by reagent strips.
Results: …

Investigation Of Electrical Properties And Structure Of Vacuum Evaporated C60 Films, Angiras D. Pandya
Investigation Of Electrical Properties And Structure Of Vacuum Evaporated C60 Films, Angiras D. Pandya
Masters Theses
C60 is an important electronic material and its properties can be tuned by thermal annealing process and solid phase crystallization process. These properties were investigated as a function of thermal annealing temperature and solid phase crystallization. However there is no systematical study on annealing effect and Solid Phase Crystallization of C60 films. In this study, the effect of thermal annealing on formation of nanocrystalline C60 thin films were investigated for annealed samples and solid phase crystallized samples. The C60 films described here were prepared by vacuum thermal evaporation method. The structural properties of C60 films …

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The purpose of this data set was to compile body mass information for all mammals on Earth so that we could investigate the patterns of body mass seen across geographic and taxonomic space and evolutionary time. We were interested in the heritability of body size across taxonomic groups (How conserved is body mass within a genus, family, and order?), in the overall pattern of body mass across continents (Do the moments and other descriptive statistics remain the same across geographic space?), and over evolutionary time (How quickly did body mass patterns iterate on the patterns seen today? Were the Pleistocene …

Different Roads To The Rule Of Law: Their Importance For Law Reform In Taiwan, James Maxeiner
Different Roads To The Rule Of Law: Their Importance For Law Reform In Taiwan, James Maxeiner
All Faculty Scholarship
Talk of law reform is in the air throughout East Asia. Whether in Beijing or Tokyo or here, law reform is spoken of in terms of strengthening the Rule of Law. But what is the Rule of Law? Different legal systems have different roads to reach the Rule of Law. These different roads are noticeable mainly in the different emphases different systems place on two critical elements in the realization of the Rule of Law State, namely rules and the machinery for implementing the rules, i.e., courts and administrative agencies. The Rule of Law makes demands on both the legal …
College On Credit: How Borrowers Perceive Their Education Debt, Sandy Baum, Marie O'Malley
College On Credit: How Borrowers Perceive Their Education Debt, Sandy Baum, Marie O'Malley
Journal of Student Financial Aid
The fourth Nellie Mae survey of student loan borrowers in repayment reveals that education debt burdens remain manageable for most borrowers. A clear majority of those in repayment report that the benefits of the educational opportunities made possible through borrowing are well worth any problems associated with paying off the loans. There are, however, indications that negative attitudes towards education debt are increasing over time. Moreover, borrowers from low-income families are more likely than others to report repayment difficulties, even when controlling for current incomes and debt levels.

Pyro: A Python-Based Versatile Programming Environment For Teaching Robotics, D. Blank, D. Kumar, Lisa A. Meeden, H. Yanco
Computer Science Faculty Works
In this article we describe a programming framework called Pyro, which provides a set of abstractions that allows students to write platform-independent robot programs. This project is unique because of its focus on the pedagogical implications of teaching mobile robotics via a top-down approach. We describe the background of the project, its novel abstractions, its library of objects, and the many learning modules that have been created from which curricula for different types of courses can be drawn. Finally, we explore Pyro from the students' perspective in a case study.
