Underdetermination And The Problem Of Identical Rivals, P.D. Magnus
Underdetermination And The Problem Of Identical Rivals, P.D. Magnus
Philosophy Faculty Scholarship
If two theory formulations are merely different expressions of the same theory, then any problem of choosing between them cannot be due to the underdetermination of theories by data. So one might suspect that we need to be able to tell distinct theories from mere alternate formulations before we can say anything substantive about underdetermination, that we need to solve the problem of identical rivals before addressing the problem of underdetermination. Here I consider two possible solutions: Quine proposes that we call two theories identical if they are equivalent under a reconstrual of predicates, but this would mishandle important cases. …

In this paper we show that a change in the signs of some of the metric components of the solution of the field equations for the classical cosmic string results in a solution which we interpret as a time-dependent wall composed of tachyons. We show that the walls have the property of focusing the paths of particles which pass through them. As an illustration of this focusing, we demonstrate the results of a simple simulation of the interaction between one such tachyon wall and a rotating disk of point masses. This interaction leads to the temporary formation of spiral structures. …
Public-Private Partnership? Shifting Paradigms Of Economic Governance In Ontario, Neil Bradford
Public-Private Partnership? Shifting Paradigms Of Economic Governance In Ontario, Neil Bradford
Data and Test Instruments
In recent years, many governments have embraced new modes of economic governance that rely on public-private partnerships. These forms of governance effectively devolve authority and responsibility from the state, and instead rely on the policy networks found in civil society. This article argues that despite the general enthusiasm for such decentralized collaboration, there is significant variation in its meaning and practice. Comparing the public-private partnership strategies of two governments in Ontario in the 1990s, the article analyzes the origins and progress of two distinctive governance paradigms, looking for signs of economic innovation. The case studies demonstrate that each of the …

The Information Content In Trades Of Inactive Nasdaq Stocks, Peter Chen, Kasing Man, Chunchi Wu
The Information Content In Trades Of Inactive Nasdaq Stocks, Peter Chen, Kasing Man, Chunchi Wu
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
In this paper we analyze the frequency and information content of small Nasdaq stock trades and their impacts on return volatility at the intraday interval. We employ an autoregressive conditional duration (ACD) model to estimate the intensity of the arrival and information content of trades by accounting for the deterministic nature of intraday periodicity and irregular trading intervals in transaction data. We estimate and compare the price duration of thinly and heavily traded stocks to assess the differential information content of stock trades. We find that the number of transactions is negatively correlated with price duration or positively correlated with …

Letter From The Editor-In-Chief, Allan Young
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
With the present issue I've assumed the role of Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance and Business Ventures, with my colleagues at the School of Management, Syracuse University, David Wilemon and Chunchi Wu carrying on as Editors. In addition, Yochanan Shachmurove, who was instrumental in helping us put together our two previous issues, joins our Board of Editorial Advisors, as do William J. Baumol, and Lawrence R. Klein. Reflecting the diversity of the field itself, the present issue of the Journal is charactericized by many different concerns and approaches to the area of entrepreneurship. Accordingly, in the first article, …
A Simple Utility Approach To Private Equity Sales, Robert Dubil
A Simple Utility Approach To Private Equity Sales, Robert Dubil
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
The paper examines the liquidity risk of a private equity firm that decides to dispose of a large holding in its portfolio. As the sale takes time, it requires a careful balancing act of the exposure to the fluctuations in the market value of the investment against the large sale-induced price depression. A mean-standard deviation utility framework is an appealing decision tool for optimizing protracted asset dispositions. The firm maximizes the expected profit from the sale strategy net of the price concession minus a penalty function for exposure to the price risk, with the penalty weight related to a loss …

Identification Of Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Secondary Succession Changes In Altamira, Brazil: Integrating Remote Sensing And Gis Technology, Hui Li
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There has been extensive use of remote sensing to study secondary succession of moist tropical forests in the Amazon Basin. However, scientists have not totally understood the dynamic processes of secondary succession of Amazon forests. A lack of consensus remains about what is the best approach for biomass estimation in the Amazon Basin using remotely sensed data. It is not clear which spectral wavelength bands have the best relationship with biomass values and what are the specific relationships between biomass and TM satellite radiance. The strategies in this research, based on analysis of detailed ground-based data and satellite TM image …

“Don’T Tell Me, I’Ll Find Out”: Robert Karplus—A Science Education Pioneer, Robert Fuller
Robert G. Fuller Publications
Robert Karplus (1927–90), who began his career as a brilliant theoretical physicist, switched to science education in the early 1960s. He made many substantial contributions to this field in addition to developing a complete K–6 hands-on science curriculum. Karplus provided his curriculum with a sound epistemological foundation, based on the work of Piaget. He developed an effective classroom teaching strategy, the learning cycle. He and his team used a scientific approach to curriculum development. They focused on teacher development. Karplus was committed to science for ALL students. Through science activities he sought to share the joy of discovery. A recent …

Is Entrepreneurship Only About Entering A New Business, Iraj J. Fooladi, Nargess K. Kayhani
Is Entrepreneurship Only About Entering A New Business, Iraj J. Fooladi, Nargess K. Kayhani
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
To most people entrepreneurship is solely about innovation and entering a new venture. For example, Hisrich and Peters (2002) define entrepreneurship as “the process of creating something new with value by devoting the necessary time and effort, assuming the accompanying financial, psychic, and social risks, and receiving the resulting rewards of monetary and personal satisfaction and independence.†According to Kuratko and Welsch (1994) “Many people now regard entrepreneurship as „pioneership? on the business frontier.†Bygrave (1994) begins with Schumpeter?s definition of an entrepreneur and continues to argue that only a few businesses would have the potential to fit Schumpeterian definition …

Characteristics Of Venture Capital Firms And Investment Appraisals: Australian Evidence, Alireza Tourani-Rad, Bryce England
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
This study examines the characteristics of the venture capital industry in Australia. Our analysis is based on responses by thirty-two venture capitalist firms to a comprehensive questionnaire conducted in 2001. We observe that, on average, a venture capital firm has been operating for five years and consists of six investment executives with two specialist investment executives. Each firm has, on average, two formal layers in its investment decision-making process indicating two checkpoints to control risk. With respect to investment appraisal issues, it was noticed that the valuation methods based on discounted cash flows, recent transaction prices for acquisitions in the …

We report optical and near-infrared follow-up observations of GRB 011121 collected predominantly at ESO telescopes in Chile. We discover a break in the afterglow light curve after 1.3 days, which implies an initial jet opening angle of about 9°. The jet origin of this break is supported by the fact that the spectral energy distribution is achromatic during the rst four days. During later phases, GRB 011121 shows signi cant excess emission above the flux predicted by a power law, which we interpret as additional light from an underlying supernova. In particular, the spectral energy distribution of the optical transient …

Alabamans In East Tennessee: Letters From Confederate Soldiers Back Home, Dieter C. Ullrich
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
Between the summer of 1862 and the fall of 1863, tens of thousands of Confederate soldiers camped upon the hills and valleys near Chattanooga, Tennessee. Many of those men would write home of the sites and events they experienced. What follows are several letters that were recently found in the Auburn University archives located in the Ralph Brown Draughon Library.
