The Qualities Of Mercy: Maximizing The Impact Of U.S. Refugee Resettlement, Daniel J. Steinbock Jun 2003

The Qualities Of Mercy: Maximizing The Impact Of U.S. Refugee Resettlement, Daniel J. Steinbock

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Resettlement in the US. bestows a life changing benefit on thousands of overseas refugees. Because American refugee acceptance can never reach more than a tiny fraction of the world's millions of persecuted or oppressed, however, allocating this bounty requires the US. to choose the lucky few from the worthy many. Since the creation in 1980 of a permanent program of refugee resettlement, three different, and often conflicting, purposes have contended for its trove of immigration-like admissions slots. These are the removal of people from danger or hardship, the furtherance of a cluster of foreign policy objectives, and the facilitation of …

A Hematological Survey Of Preschool Children Of The United Arab Emirates, Campbell J. Miller, Earl V. Dunn, Bertel Berg, Sameeh F. Abdouni

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: Anemia is common worldwide, particularly in developing countries including states of the Arabian Peninsular. The purpose of this study was to produce a hematological profile of preschool national children of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). METHODS: From April 2000 to October 2000, a cross-sectional community clinic-based capillary blood survey was carried out on a convenience sample of 1-5-year-old Emirati children attending a Primary Health Care Center in Al-Ain, UAE. Those children with capillary hemoglobin (Hb) and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) values below predetermined cutoffs were offered venous blood hematological workup. A random sample of children with values above those …

Animism, Cannibalism, And Pet-Keeping Among The Guajá Of Eastern Amazonia, Loretta A. Cormier Jun 2003

Animism, Cannibalism, And Pet-Keeping Among The Guajá Of Eastern Amazonia, Loretta A. Cormier

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

Recent work in Amazonian religion, sociality, and ecological adaptation have addressed the interrelationships among animism, cannibalism, and pet-keeping.  In this article, I attempt to reconcile these works with the beliefs and behaviors of the Guajá of eastern Amazonia.  I argue that the specific configuration of animism, cannibalism, and pet-keeping among the Guajá relates to their social organization and mode of production as hunter-gatherers.

Obras recentes tratando da religião, socialidade, e adaptação ecológica na Amazonia têm demonstrado as relações entre o animismo, o canibalismo, e a prática de criar animais de estimação.  Neste trabalho, eu tento reconciliar estas obras com as …

Comparative Genome Organization Of Human, Murine, And Feline Mhc Class Ii Region, Naoya Yuhki, Thomas W. Beck, Robert M. Stephens, Yoko Nishigaki, Kymberly Newmann, Stephen J. O'Brien

Biology Faculty Articles

To study comparative molecular dynamics in the genesis of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), we determined a complete nucleotide sequence spanning 758,291 bp of the domestic cat (Felis catus) extended and classical class II region. The feline class II MHC includes 44 genes (31 predicted to be expressed) which display DNA sequence homology and ordered gene synteny with human HLA and mouse H2, in extended class II and centromere proximal regions (DM to DO) of the classical class II region. However, remarkable genomic alterations including gene gain and loss plus size differentials of 250 kb are …

Review Of Molecular Infection Biology: Interactions Between Mircoorganisms And Cells By Jörg Hacker And Jürgen Heesemann, Jeffrey D. Cirillo Jun 2003

Review Of Molecular Infection Biology: Interactions Between Mircoorganisms And Cells By Jörg Hacker And Jürgen Heesemann, Jeffrey D. Cirillo

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Pathogenesis is one potential outcome of the constant struggle between host defenses and the desire of microorganisms to acquire a privileged niche. This mutually competitive evolutionary process has resulted in interactions among complex and often elegant systems throughout the course of infections. The complexity of these interactions and the large number of infectious agents that exist makes the introduction of students to infectious diseases, as well as a comprehensive review of the field, an extremely daunting task. This book provides just such a comprehensive and timely description of the field in a manner that is easily understandable and enjoyable to …

Confessions Of A (Somewhat) Reluctant Consultant: Or, What Happens When Academic Dreams Go "Poof", Lawrence Hammar

The Qualitative Report

This essay really is about a protracted and painful transition from academic and teacher to consultant and researcher, but first, I want to get a few things off my chest. If you can stand some wholly relevant whine at the outset, stay with me, but if not, just skip to the third section.

Are Antinuclear Antibodies And Rheumatiod Factor Positivity More Prevalent In Apparently Healthy Smokers Compared To Ex-Smokers And Never Smokers?, Susan Nyanzi Jun 2003

Are Antinuclear Antibodies And Rheumatiod Factor Positivity More Prevalent In Apparently Healthy Smokers Compared To Ex-Smokers And Never Smokers?, Susan Nyanzi

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Context: There is now consistent evidence from population and epidemiological studies that cigarette smoking is an independent risk factor for Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), via Rheumatoid Factor (RF) production (Deighton, 1997; Saag, 1997; Silman, 1996; Uhlig, 1999; Wolfe, 2000). Antinuclear Antibodies (ANA) are another collection of autoantibodies that are being associated with smoking and RA initiation. To our knowledge, no studies have examined the effects of smoking on both ANA and RF simultaneously in healthy subjects.

Objectives: To determine whether cigarette smoking has an effect on ANA and RF positivity in healthy blood donors.

Design, Setting, Participants: This was a cross-sectional, …

Barriers To International Giving By U.S.-Based Private Foundations: Perceptions Of Stakeholders, Rachel Humphrey May 2003

Barriers To International Giving By U.S.-Based Private Foundations: Perceptions Of Stakeholders, Rachel Humphrey

Master's Theses

This study described perceptions of 26 stakeholders in the field of international philanthropy regarding barriers to international giving. It further investigated the role of private foundations in international assistance and the types of organizations promoting international philanthropy and helping foundations overcome these barriers.

The study found that there were psychosocial barriers facing foundations not engaged in international philanthropy, practical barriers that inhibit international grantmaking, and strategic and psychosocial barriers to effective international philanthropy by foundations already engaged in it. Of those, the psychosocial barriers were most significant in hampering the growth of international philanthropy. There was no significant difference in …

Epidemiological Survey On The Prevalence Of Nosocomial Infections Caused By Drug Resistant Bacteria, Jelita Ann Green May 2003

Epidemiological Survey On The Prevalence Of Nosocomial Infections Caused By Drug Resistant Bacteria, Jelita Ann Green

Theses (Pre-2016)

Nosocomial infections have been recognized for over a century as a critical problem affecting the quality of health care and a principal source of adverse health care outcomes. The National Nosocomial Infections Surveillance System defines a nosocomial infection as (1) a localized or systemic condition that results from adverse reaction to the presence of an infectious agent(s) or its toxin(s) and (2) that was not present or incubating at the time a patient is admitted to a hospital. Today, nosocomial infections affect over 2 million patients annually in the United States at a cost in excess of $4.5 billion (Hormaeche, …
