Prediction Of 1976 Diabetes Incidence From 1960 Animal Product Consumption Among California Seventh-Day Adventists, Arnold Vang

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The prevalence of diagnosed and undiagnosed diabetes in the US has been estimated at more than 16 million individuals (King, 1998). This has led to research into lifestyle practices (Astrup, 2001; Touomilehto, 2001), which has identified several of primary prevention. High fat diet and type 2 diabetes has been attributed to the wellareas known mechanisms of hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinaemia and insulin resistance (Ferrannini, 1999; Reaven, 1988).

We examined the association between all animal product consumption, specific animal product consumption and diabetes incidence among California Seventh-day Adventists who were cohort members of the Adventist Mortality Study (Kahn, 1984) and the Adventist Health …

The Legal Relationship Among A Reciprocal Insurer's Subscribers, Advisory Committee And Attorney-In-Fact, Michael A. Haskel Jul 2003

The Legal Relationship Among A Reciprocal Insurer's Subscribers, Advisory Committee And Attorney-In-Fact, Michael A. Haskel

City University of New York Law Review

The increase in the number and importance of reciprocals or inter-insurance exchanges has led to greater regulation of this form of insurer, which was once largely exempt from government oversight in many jurisdictions. Currently, jurisprudence varies among the states. Although the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (hereinafter “NAIC”) drafted the Reciprocal Attor- ney-in-Fact Model Act (hereinafter “Reciprocal Act”) to provide uniformity in the treatment of reciprocals, the Reciprocal Act is seriously flawed in the manner it treats the relative rights and duties of the advisory committee and of the attorney-in-fact, which respectively govern and administer the reciprocal. To achieve a …

General Theory On Disputes And Conflicts, A, Raymond Shonholtz Jul 2003

General Theory On Disputes And Conflicts, A, Raymond Shonholtz

Journal of Dispute Resolution

In response to Carrie Menkel-Meadow's challenge to articulate and define a general theory of conflict management that is universally applicable regardless of context or domain,' the following General Theory and methodologies are put forth. The relational context that Menkel-Meadow offers between domestic and international is not the applicable construct for the formation of a general theory. Instead, the relevant frame is between non-democratic and democratic political systems and the difference between the concepts of conflict and dispute and their attending institutional mechanisms. Menkel-Meadow's analysis is useful in subdefining the issues in the vast foliage of conflict resolution and dispute management, …

State Legislative Update, Mark G. Boyko Jul 2003

State Legislative Update, Mark G. Boyko

Journal of Dispute Resolution

This bill would have prevented employers from requiring employees to arbitrate disputes arising under the Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA). In doing so, it would have changed the established law in California that written agreements to arbitrate disputes are valid and enforceable. Specifically, this bill would have invalidated arbitration agreements between employers and employees if the employer required the employee to sign the agreement as a condition of employment. A.B. 1715 would have applied to employers with five or more employees.

Measure For Measure: Benchmarking The Region's Future, Don Barney, Alan Kenneth Delatorre Jul 2003

Measure For Measure: Benchmarking The Region's Future, Don Barney, Alan Kenneth Delatorre

Institute of Metropolitan Studies Publications

Through its Progress Board created in 1989 and Oregon Benchmarks, Oregon has been a leader in collecting and using data to discern statewide trends in dozens of different economic, environmental, and social arenas. Oregon was among the first U.S. states to set targets for the future in each of these categories, allowing its citizens to see how much farther we have to go to achieve livability goals. These benchmarks are grouped under three major areas of a state strategic plan: quality jobs for all Oregonians; safe, caring and eng aged communities; and healthy, sustainable surroundings. Is there real value in …

Effects Of Supplemental Magnesium On Temporary Threshold Shift: Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions, Jenifer Leonard Jul 2003

Effects Of Supplemental Magnesium On Temporary Threshold Shift: Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions, Jenifer Leonard

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Previous studies have shown that supplemental magnesium administered prior to exposure to noise has an alleviating effect on temporary threshold shift (TTS). These studies have only used audiometric thresholds to demonstrate changes in the auditory system. However, to help determine the effects on outer hair cells (OHCs), a more sensitive measure should be used. The purpose of this study was to determine if supplemental magnesium administration prior to noise exposure has a beneficial effect on acoustic overexposure using a double-blind research design. This was determined by measuring distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) to determine any changes in cochlear OHC function. …

“Bin Laden’S Brain”: The Abrasively Negativistic Personality Of Dr. Ayman Al-Zawahiri, Aubrey Immelman, Kathryn Kuhlmann

Psychology Faculty Publications

This paper presents the results of an indirect assessment of the personality of Ayman al-Zawahiri, deputy leader of the al-Qaida terrorist network at the time of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the United States and allegedly chief strategist for al-Qaida operations and personal physician to Osama bin Laden.

Al-Zawahiri’s primary personality patterns were found to be Contentious/oppositional and Dominant/controlling, with secondary features of the Dauntless/dissenting and Ambitious/self-serving patterns.

The amalgam of Contentious (negativistic, or passive-aggressive) and Dominant (aggressive, or sadistic) patterns in al-Zawahiri’s profile suggests the presence of the “abrasive negativist” syndrome. For these personalities, minor frictions easily …

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Three studies examined associations between early child care and child outcomes among families different from those in the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Early Child Care Research Network study. Results suggest that quality is an important influence on children’s development and may be an important moderator of the amount of time in care. Thus, the generalizability of the NICHD findings may hinge on the context in which those results were obtained. These studies, conducted in three national contexts, with different regulatory climates, ranges of child care quality, and a diversity of family characteristics, suggest a need …

Requirement For The Betai And Betaiv Tubulin Isotypes In Mammalian Cilia., Heather C Jensen-Smith, Richard F Ludueña, Richard Hallworth

Journal Articles: Eppley Institute

Nielsen et al., [2001: Curr Biol 11:529-533], based on studies in Drosophila, have proposed that beta tubulin in axonemal microtubules must contain a specific acidic seven amino acid sequence in its carboxyl terminus. In mammals, the two betaIV isotypes (betaIVa and betaIVb) contain that sequence. In order to test the application of this hypothesis to mammals, we have examined the expression of beta tubulin isotypes in four different ciliated tissues (trachea, ependyma, uterine tube, and testis) using isotype-specific antibodies and indirect immunofluorescence. We find that betaIV tubulin is present in all ciliated cell types examined, but so is betaI tubulin. …

Fisheries Research Contract Reports

This project has drawn together existing research data relating to natural and human impacts on the Abrolhos Islands marine habitats. It has surveyed current uses of these habitats and placed anthropogenic impacts within the context of natural perturbations. Through public forum presentation and debate, this work has allowed real issues, not perceptions, to surface and be addressed properly. This was achieved by defining a strategic programme of research through a scientific workshop process involving all community stakeholders. A two volume Fisheries Research Report (WA) summarizes current knowledge and details the workshop proceedings and strategic research plan.
