Development Of A Multicriteria Spatial Decision Support System With Application To The Economic Optimization Of Aircraft Based Weather Data Collection, Ganzague Erol Osman Ozan

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This research is motivated by the economic optimization of the Troposherical Airborne Meteorological Data Reporting (TAMDAR), an aircraft-based meteorological data collection system. In the envisioned TAMDAR system, meteorological data collected by the onboard sensors of selected aircraft are transmitted to the ground as aircraft fly their missions. The data is processed by a national center, which disseminates the data to diverse users such as weather forecasters and aviation control centers. Substantial government funding is required for the implementation and operation of this new data acquisition system and data transmission expenditures constitute the largest portion of the costs. To achieve economic …

What's Yours? What's Mine?, Robert D. Woodcock Jul 2003

What's Yours? What's Mine?, Robert D. Woodcock

English Theses & Dissertations

This collection of poems explores identity by examining family, love, isolation, and humor. Each of its four sections gives insight into how its particular theme influences who we become as individuals. It begins with family and the struggles related to family values versus personal beliefs. I include poems that speak to my cultural upbringing and direct conflicts between my beliefs and my family'. The second celebrates the coexistence of individuality and togetherness in a relationship. These poems celebrate love while simultaneously attending to the speaker's position as half of the relationship. Section three uses isolated speakers to evoke emotional responses …

Mechanical Properties Of The Integument Of The Common Gartersnake, Thamnophis Sirtalis (Serpentes: Colubridae), Gabriel Rivera Jul 2003

Mechanical Properties Of The Integument Of The Common Gartersnake, Thamnophis Sirtalis (Serpentes: Colubridae), Gabriel Rivera

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The evolution of the ophidian feeding mechanism has involved substantial morphological restructuring associated with the ability to ingest relatively large prey. Previous studies examining the morphological consequences of macrophagy have concentrated on modifications of the skull and cephalic musculature. Although it is evident that macrophagy requires highly compliant skin, the mechanical properties of the ophidian integument have received limited attention, particularly in the context of feeding. I examined mechanical properties of skin along the body axis in male Thamnophis sirtalis (Colubridae). From each of 11 specimens, I examined nine circumferential strips of skin, each spanning 10 ventral scales, spaced at …

Piezoelectric Sensor In The Application Of Rolling Bearing Health Monitoring, Yinyin Liu Jul 2003

Piezoelectric Sensor In The Application Of Rolling Bearing Health Monitoring, Yinyin Liu

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A condition-based monitoring concept for rolling element bearings in machinery utilizing a piezoelectric load sensor is investigated in this thesis. The radially polarized cylindrical piezoelectric sensor is modeled in its specific coordinates. The sensor registers the stress occurring in all directions around it. The sensor's behavior due to several typical loads is analyzed. Based on the induced stresses in the sensor, the sensor's output as an electric charge can be obtained using the method of integration.

Considering both the normal and tangential loads distributed on the rolling beating's roller-raceway contact surface, the dynamic stress distribution in the outer raceway was …

Second, participants called an automated telephonic response system twice daily for six days and recorded their current body-image states, from the questions on the Body Image States Scale. Finally, a Post-Study Questionnaire was completed. Pearson correlations examined the extent to which the pretest measures predicted the level and variability of body-image states. Consistent with hypotheses, greater satisfaction with one' appearance, less dysfunctional …

Attorney-Client Sex: A Feminist Critique Of The Absence Of Regulation, Malinda L. Seymore Jul 2003

Attorney-Client Sex: A Feminist Critique Of The Absence Of Regulation, Malinda L. Seymore

Faculty Scholarship

Doctors can't do it. Psychotherapists can't do it. Ministers can't do it. Chiropractors and social workers can't do it. But lawyers can. Lawyers, in most jurisdictions, can have sex with their clients without violating a standard of professional responsibility.

Sex between lawyers and clients occurs far more frequently than many believe. In a 1993 nationwide survey of attorneys, 18.9% of the respondents had sex with a client or knew of at least one other attorney who had. Despite this figure, there are only a handful of cases where attorneys have been disciplined for having sex with their clients. The reported …

Perspectives From Argentina, Brazil, And Colombia: Hemispheric Security, Luiz Bitencourt Dr., Pedro Villagra Delgado Ambassador, Henry Medina Uribe Major General

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

There is a lack of a common view regarding precisely "What is a threat?" and "What is security?" which is the heart of the stability problem in Latin America. These authors acknowledge that the traditional definition of security and threat is no longer completely valid. They understand that a more realistic concept includes the protection of national sovereignty against unconventional internal causes and attackers. They also recognize that a close linkage exists among security, development, and democracy. Nevertheless, they were reluctant to take a broadened definition of national security to its logical conclusion. That is, to correspondingly broaden and integrate …
